Most of the people who gives builds are from the US and are not familiar with European pricing or retailers. If you do some research and post a build yourself, you'll get a lot more responses on how to make it better.

I guess on low res, but the Athlon isn't that bad so wouldn't the 6670 be your bottleneck most of the time?

Hey guys, I built a computer about 3 years ago based upon advice from a friend. So far, I've been very pleased with it and it's been able to run everything at least on medium settings. During the latest steam sale, however, I picked up The Witcher 2, and my current build can't handle it even on low settings so I think it's time for a few upgrades : ) I'm a total newbie when it comes to hardware, so I'm hoping someone here can provide advice for which components I should buy.

Here are my current specs:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU 530 @ 2.93GHz

Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250

System
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manufacturer Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Model H55M-S2H
Total amount of system memory 4.00 GB RAM
System type 64-bit operating system
Number of processor cores 2

Graphics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Display adapter type NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
Total available graphics memory 2237 MB
Dedicated graphics memory 512 MB
Dedicated system memory 0 MB
Shared system memory 1725 MB
Display adapter driver version 9.18.13.1106
Primary monitor resolution 1440x900

What is your budget?

I would like to spend $300 - $500, but I'm not sure how doable that is. I would like to be able to play modern games on high settings, if possible. If not I will settle for lower settings in order to stay within my budget.

What is your resolution?

Primary monitor resolution 1440x900.

What are you using it for?

Exclusively gaming

What is your upgrade cycle?

3+ years, if possible.

When do you plan on building it?

As soon as possible, but definitely within the next couple months.

Do you plan on overclocking?

I don't even know what this is so I'll go with a "no" : )

Do you need an Operating System?

No. Currently using windows 7.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

No.

Where are you buying your parts from?

I'm in the US, so I figured newegg would be a good option? If anyone has suggestions for a better place to buy parts I would love to hear them.

Thanks for your time!

Depending on your power supply you might be able to fit a low end i5, mobo and a cheaper graphics into $500. Need to know what power supply you have, should be written on the side of it.

LG GH24NS90 DVD-RW Black S-ATA
They come in at around the same price point.is this one any better?

This is straight up better than the last, but AMD is barely competitive on CPUs these day, are there any intel builds around?

Thanks for responding, here is the information from my power supply:

BFG, Model: BFGR550WGSPSU
Fan Controlled ATX12v Switching Power Supply
AC Input: 115/230V~, 50/60hz, 7/4A

Bad news, google says it has a good chance of exploding if you pull close to its advertised power. Apparently its a relabeled one of these.

Maybe you can still get an ok build for $500 with this psu but ill leave that to someone more confident in exactly how much power systems draw.

As my birthday is approaching (beginning of september) I'm looking to switch back to a PC after owning a Macbook for about 2 years.

The parts I selected to build are:

ASUS P8Z77-V LX2
i5-3570k
Corsair DDR3 8GB 2x
Gigabyte GTX660 SC
Western Digital 1TB HDD 2x
bequiet L8 600W

which would bring me to around 950€-1000€

+ Keyboard, Mouse, OS and maybe a new Monitor

I want your feedback on the build. Is there anything I could optimize in it? My budget is around 1000€ to 1500€, the lower the better

Get a i5-4670k and Z87 mobo unless the 3570 is significantly cheaper. Old generation stuff is rarely worth it.

Drop one of the HDDs and get a Samsung 840 ssd in whatever size you can afford. Though I think new samsung SSDs will be out by september so check on that.

Otherwise pretty good.

It explodes? Well that's pretty troubling... So you don't think it's possible to significantly upgrade my machine without purchasing a new power supply as well?

Your build should be able to handle Witcher 2 on low settings so... there may be other problems besides inadequate hardware. You can do a lot but not everything with $500.

Power supply would of course be one of the things you're going to buy. A Rosewill Capstone 450 which is very good and capable would be $60.

I'm not sure what kind of computer you have but if it's a HP / Dell / etc prebuilt then you may want a better case for ~$40 - ~$80.

You can spend ~$200 on a core i5, ~$70 on a H87 / B85 board, and you can just re-use your RAM.

Depending on how much you spent on the case, that leaves you with enough for a Radeon HD7770 for ~$110 or GTX 650 Ti Boost for ~$140 or Radeon HD7870 for ~$180. Since you're running such a low resolution and if you have no plans to get a new monitor, you should get a Radeon HD7770.

You can also go with a less expensive power supply like a CX430 for ~$40 and use the extra money towards a Samsung 840 for ~$90.

There are about a dozen other ways to go with a $500 upgrade.

Thanks for the information. Based on your advice, I'm looking at the following parts:

Power Supply: Rosewill CAPSTONE-450 450W Continuous @ 50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS GOLD, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92, SLI/CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Power Supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066)

Motherboard: ASRock H87 Pro4 LGA 1150 Intel H87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157383)

Core: Intel Core i5-3350P Ivy Bridge 3.1GHz (3.3GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 69W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80637i53350P (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116782)

Graphics Card: EVGA 02G-P4-3657-KR GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130909)

I think my next upgrade will be to get a nicer monitor, so I think a mid-level graphics card makes sense?

As mentioned above, I am a total newbie with hardware so if any of these stick out to you as poor purchases, or if you think there are better options out there, I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know!

The 3rd generation processors (Ivybridge) need a 7 series board (H77, B75), they can't go in a H87 board (which are meant for 4th generation processors, Haswell).

Thanks a lot Rachnar. I only really play SC2 and LoL at the moment, however that is because my laptop can't handle anything else. Will the build you made be able to handle games being released now, and if so what sort of quality settings would I be able to play these games on?

med-max, depends on the type of games, stuff like antialiasing that you use and the framerate tolerances you have (some people are fine with 30fps on max settings with AA, others will lower settings/aa to have ~100fps in many areas)

With a build like that you're over the budget step for i5 CPU, so the graphics card you choose will have a really big impact on performance for GPU limited games (but not LoL, or sc2)

Let me repost this since I got little reply last time. I am looking to upgrade my CPU, but that requires a new motherboard, and then I might as well add some RAM (I only have 4GB atm).

I am looking at these packages: http://www.komplett.no/k/kl.aspx?bn=10297&mfr=&filter=PRICE.2500-5000.
at the moment. The site is in Norwegian but the specks are in English. I am currently in need of an upgrade in order to stream in higher resolution with minimal lag. I am willing to spend 4500 NOK or less. (I also probably have to buy a new power supply). I guess I need i5 or i7. Which package seems to give you "most for the money". I am also scared to buy a bad motherboard since I know very little about what makes a good or bad motherboard. Any help or advice would be appreciated

Are you looking to overclock?

If you want a quick answer, http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=783615

Mobo seems ok, i've heard its name a lot, someone said you can't sli/xfire with it and it's a lower end model but seems to be ok for cheap z87

I have looked over the whole build now, and have a few questions. Some of these may be really stupid, but I just want to double check things. Hopefully anyone in the thread with more knowledge than me will be able to answer these:

1. Will I also need to get a cooling fan or is the fan built into the PSU sufficient?
2. Would it not better better to get a cooling fan of 500w or more, as this would leave greater room for more power hungry upgrades in years to come?
3. Do I need/is it worth getting sound cards and network cards (wired and wireless), as I know you can get standalone versions of these, but I thought the motherboard dealt with these?
4. I know you didn't mention a DVD drive, but in regard to these, are there any makes I should stay away from or are any ok (as long as the are 24x and run all disk types)?

the fan built in the psu is always enough, only people that are maniacs about sound change it

i don't understand at all your second question

you don't need those, except the wireless if you wan't it, that only coems with higher end motherboards

cheapest one of thsoe is fine

Case comes with one fan, should be more than enough for this build. PSU is more than enough for a similar level build upgrades.

Dedicated sound cards are only really for audiophiles these days, need a network card if you want wireless otherwise mobo has it covered.

The cheaper the optical drive is the louder it is in my experience, Ive never looked for brands.

No you don't. The case has a fan, the CPU and GPU also has its own fans.

430w is sufficient for most non-overclocked and single GPU configurations. And power requirements for future components will be lower, not higher.

Yes the motherboard has both sound and network. If you want wireless then you will need to purchase an adapter since most motherboards do not include wireless. Your build is quite low end so a sound card and network card over a SSD is simply stupid.

Disc drives are mostly obsolete, it doesn't matter which one you get.

Disc drives are mostly obsolete, it doesn't matter which one you get.

Thanks for the quick replies. Just wondering if it would be worth me spending any more on any particular component though. For example, am I gonna see a noticeable difference between the two recommended GPU's (hd 7790 and hd 7850)?
Or perhaps would it be more worth spending more money on a better CPU, like the slightly more expensive i5 4570?

Would either of these changes make enough of a difference to justify spending more money, and if so which upgrade would be best (GPU or CPU)?

You won't get significant change in cpu without oc'ing, and depending on the games you play you will, for those you said you were playing though, the 7790 will run them on max no problem. If you intend on playing more demanding games, the 7850 would be better, but it isn't that significant either, you start seeing changes in gpu power every "2 gpu gap" i'd say, Like 7790 => 7870, or 7850 => 7950. I just posted both depending on which you could afford and depending on the games, as you didnt mention them before.

I am hoping to be able to play the latest FPS games such as battlefield 4 when it come out. Will the 7790 be able to handle such games? Or would I need the 7850, or are neither good enough?

7790 will be hurting, 7850 still isn't high end, it's not really well known what performance requirements are for bf4 and some upcoming games but i wouldn't expect to max them with great framerates

If you don't mind sacrificing performance in some CPU bound cases like sc2 that rely on a few cores, you could consider shifting budget around a bit to get a 6 or 8 core fx CPU (6300 and 8320 i believe are the models?) in order to invest more in GPU

FX CPU's are significantly weaker per core (one of their cores needs to be at ~5ghz to match an i5 core @3ghz current gen) but you can get an 8-core FX for £119 and 6-core for even less*, maybe save a bit on the mobo's too. I don't know anything about motherboards AMD-side. They're good because if you have software that will utilize the extra cores to make up for their weakness of each individual core not being strong, then they have really great value, and can often let you make a step up on GPU without sacrificing performance in many games; either the GPU bound games, or the ones that will utilize 6-8 cores decently

Hey, while I'm not really gaming much anymore, I want to upgrade my CPU to better support web development.

I'm currently using a computer I built:

LGA1155 mobo running an i3-3220
8GB RAM
Enough HDD space
Radeon HD 7850, overclocked by ~20%

For gaming it was perfect - actually, the GPU was too good. However, now I'm doing a lot of heavy CPU work (compiling/running Ruby on Rails programs/running webservers mostly) and the ~4000 Passmark score of the i3 just doesn't cut it. The way I see it is I have two options:

1. Get an i7-3770k and overclock it to ~9000 passmark score (probably on the order of $400, because I'd need aftermarket cooling right?)
2. Get an Xeon e3-1230 v2 for $240 with ~9000 passmark score.

Both are "LGA1155" sockets, but will I have any issues with a Xeon? It's not a server motherboard at all... It's a GA-H61M-S2PV

I'm curious as to which is my best course of action. The Xeon option seems cheaper (and Xeons are probably better for webdev anyway), but are there any compatibility options? Am I overestimating the price of the i7-3770k + overclock?

Thanks!

Do you know how well the 7790 and 7850 could run recently released FPS games like Bioshock Infinite?

Some consumer boards support Xeons. If your board supports Xeon than it's your best option since H61 boards cannot be overclocked. You would need a new Z board to overclock the 3770k.
