Hello TL guys,
I posted on this forum a few month ago looking for a build. Just recently I finally decided to completely switch back from console gaming to PC gaming with the new Gen consoles coming out. I have my birthday in october so I plan on getting the parts from now til then.
Back then when I ask in this forum for a build I had some different opinions when it came to overclocking and the money I want to spend. So my new guidelines are:
Resolution: 1920 ×1080 Budget: around 850€ (without OS) Upgrade cycle: at least 1-2 years Overclocking: Yes SLI: no
Usage: Of course for playing competitive games like Dota 2, CS and Sc2 really smoothly and also being abled to run the new games coming out although now on the absolutely highest setting.
Resellers: Because I live in Germany I would mostly use german sites like mindfactory, alternate and amazon.de
With the help of r/buildapc I already got a build idea ready and I would love to hear your thoughts on it:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K ~210€ CPU cooler: Thermaltake CLP0534 ~18€ GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 760 SC ACX ~240€ MB: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H ~130€ RAM: Kingston 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 ~50€ HD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM ~60€ PSU: XFX 550W 80 PLUS Bronze ~55€ Case: NZXT Tempest 210 ATX Mid Tower ~50€
So overall around 813€
You may ask yourself why I still ask here when I basically have a finished build: Its pretty simple when I invest 850€ I want different sources to take a look at the parts. Since this is my first PC build I really want to make sure everything is right
My overall questions about this build are:
Are all the parts compatible?
Is there anything that would make the build more cost efficient?
Is there a better GTX 760 then the EVGA 2gb SC ACX? ( I guess the 4gb one from EVGA only makes sense with more than one monitor or higher resolution?!)
Is this build strong enough for a 120hz monitor to make sense (I still need a monitor for it so if you have any recommendation feel free to post them, I was looking at the BenQ XL2411T but a little cheaper would be nice)?
Thanks in advance animus128
Edit: I forgot my DVD drive but that shouldn't be really that relevant (max. 20€)

I am looking to keep the budget around $750, with an absolute ceiling of $1000. What is your resolution?
1920X1080, possibly 2560x1440 What are you using it for?
Mostly work related things such as word processing. But definitely a little gaming such as LoL, and photo editing such as photoshop should be usable although not necessarily top tier. Streaming things such as Netflix and lectures would be very important.
What is your upgrade cycle?
The upgrade cycle isn't set for now. It would be more of a replace as needs change kind of policy.
When do you plan on building it?
As soon as possible! If I can get a list of parts as early as tomorrow! Do you plan on overclocking?
No, absolutely not.
Do you need an Operating System?
Yes, It will be getting Windows 7 or 8.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No, I don't think this build will require that much GPU power.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I am currently in Florida, and I don't believe there is a Fry's or Microcenter near me, although there are local PC shops.
Thanks so much for anyone who wants to help me with this! This will be my first build from scratch, although I have replaced many, many parts in my PC, so any helpful advice would be appreciated! I have done a lot of homework on a build from scratch, including watching a couple complete walkthroughs, so hopefully I am not completely incompetent, although some of the compatibility issues seem like a major headache to sort through as far as architecture and slot design and all that, so I really appreciate the time you guys put in!
Since your budget is pretty high for your needs let's build small.

You should get 2x4gb RAM, not 1x8gb. Get ~2400mhz if it's not significantly more expensive, it can give you as much as 8-10% gains in some situations like sc2 minimums, over 1600mhz
You should also either not overclock, or get a cooler that's actually good IMO. Some examples:
Midrange amazing value - get this if you want to cut cash and don't care too much about high OC: http://www.amazon.de/Thermalright-HR-02-Macho-Rev-A-BW/dp/B008YTUN38/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373324029&sr=8-1&keywords=hr-02 macho
High end, similar power to eachother: http://www.amazon.de/Thermalright-Silver-Arrow-SB-E-SE/dp/B009R41N06/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1373324033&sr=8-3
http://www.amazon.de/Noctua-NH-U14S-CPU-Kühler/dp/B00C76WV3O/ref=sr_1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1373324049&sr=1-4
Linked for example, not cause those sites have best price etc. It's not really at all appropriate to get a shitty low profile, low budget cooler for overclocking Haswell. The HR-02 Macho is so many leagues ahead at a trivially increased cost.
Yea, it's good enough for 120hz to make sense especially if you lower settings on the most demanding games. A good 120/144hz monitor is great from what i hear. Look into Lightboost (2d)

Nice thank you So I would probably go for http://www.amazon.de/dp/B008YAI7RG/?tag=pcp05-21 as RAM and http://www.amazon.de/Thermalright-HR-02-Macho-Rev-A-BW/dp/B008YTUN38/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373324029&sr=8-1&keywords=hr-02 macho as a CPU cooler because yes I plan on overclocking but because I'm more of Noob when it comes to that I don't plan on overclocking a huge amount.
Any more thoughts on the other parts?
Edit: And of course I will look for the cheapest price when it comes to actually buying the parts. I'm not fixed on any reseller^^

I'm not psu guy and i'd rather not comment on gpu models without looking into them a ton etc, get RAM without big heat spreaders on top though. It's just better to have in general - they serve no real function and are incompatible with bigger coolers (the silver arrow, nhd14 etc - the macho and u12s/u14s work with them)

A single GTX 760 is not going to max out games, just saying. Maxing out games and with 120Hz, you'd need a SLI configuration.

My 770 with low levels of AA and shaders turned down a notch flies into triple digit fps indoors in crysis 3, which is the most demanding game i have tried (1920x1080)
and LoL on max will fly to 400, 500fps, your minimum fps will probably be >200 in that game. Sc2 will spend almost all of the game 1v1 >100fps with overclocked haswell, especially with physics down/off, reflections off and effects toned down a bit if you want FPS to stay up in battles.
CSGO Sits at the 300fps cap on my system on max settings with AA. I'd sure as hell want a 120hz/144hz lightboost monitor if it was my main game.
Dota2 probably runs great also: The only thing this system wouldn't do is run the newest games at 1920x1080 max settings with AA at high enough framerates to abuse >60hz refresh, cause the GPU is "only" a 760 which is similar in strengh to the 670 which was pretty much highest end GPU available like 6 months ago

Yeah of course but many people in different forums said that 120hz is a really nice improvement even if you are not fully maxing it out. The question would be if my build would have enough of an performance to gain a good benefit from the 120hz playing things like Sc2 or CS!
That I will not be abled to run all the new games on really high settings with really high FPS is pretty clear I think^^ But thats not my goal.

I can't find something cheap that can fit 165mm cooler height at the moment. Everything I look at is not wide enough.

Sc2 would spend most of the game >>60fps (especially if you have physics lower/disabled, reflections off, and/or effects down) and CS:GO i haven't seen dip below 150 (i dont think i ever saw lower than low-mid 200's in a multiplayer game..) on max settings with aa so i can't see it not being worth
Thats the other thing i forgot to say, i was going to tell you to buy a couple fans for your case, but if you're getting a new one, be mindful of fan setups and what slots you can add fans into, they can help things a lot

Do you have any specific tips on that? The whole case and fan thing is so hard to overlook for me. I don't really know where to start...
Edit: Any thoughts on that one? http://www.corsair.com/en/pc-cases/carbide-series-pc-case/carbide-series-200r-compact-atx-case.html
It says "CPU coolers up to 160mm in height"

Yeah of course but many people in different forums said that 120hz is a really nice improvement even if you are not fully maxing it out. The question would be if my build would have enough of an performance to gain a good benefit from the 120hz playing things like Sc2 or CS! That I will not be abled to run all the new games on really high settings with really high FPS is pretty clear I think^^ But thats not my goal. Sc2 would spend most of the game >>60fps (especially if you have physics lower/disabled, reflections off, and/or effects down) and CS:GO i haven't seen dip below 150 (i dont think i ever saw lower than low-mid 200's in a multiplayer game..) on max settings with aa so i can't see it not being worth Thats the other thing i forgot to say, i was going to tell you to buy a couple fans for your case, but if you're getting a new one, be mindful of fan setups and what slots you can add fans into, they can help things a lot Do you have any specific tips on that? The whole case and fan thing is so hard to overlook for me. I don't really know where to start... Edit: Any thoughts on that one? http://www.corsair.com/en/pc-cases/carbide-series-pc-case/carbide-series-200r-compact-atx-case.htmlIt says "CPU coolers up to 160mm in height" This might be good: http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/Zalman-Z12-Plus-Midi-Tower-ohne-Netzteil-schwarz_830938.html
It comes with three 120mm fans (keep that in mind when comparing prices), has a switch to change them between fast and slow. That should be enough for a single graphics card and overclocked CPU. It should be wide enough for all CPU coolers.
I like this case a lot since someone in this thread mentioned it a while ago: http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/Silverstone-Temjin-TJ08-E-Mini-Tower-ohne-Netzteil-schwarz_753548.html
That's a single fan, but it's a very large 180mm. That's also probably enough for everything. It's mATX, so you'd need an mATX motherboard. A CPU cooler with 140mm fan will be super close to the graphics card, but everything should still fit. This case might be a bad suggestion, but I just like the idea of it. [edit: It also needs a PSU that's not too large so that an optical drive can still fit.]

Does anyone have ivy bridge/haswell capable of moderate overclocking (4.5?) and a decent amd/nvidia GPU? Seen some pretty big performance differences with Gumbi and we're not sure what to put them down to (haswell vs ivy, amd/nvidia driver optimizations?). As much as 20% higher minimums, 30% higher averages and ~50% higher max fps consistently with 4770k (ht off) + 770, vs 3570k +7950, at the same CPU clock speeds and RAM clocks/timings.
My gpu's laughing at sc2 on low, it underclocks to like 40% of core clocks, 20% of memory clocks and throws out hundreds of FPS with fan speed around 35% and gpu temp around 35c, but we saw differing performance to this extent pretty much universally watching the same replay, same camera, same benchmarking procedures and it's far too big to ignore

Would be useful data, got skype? it'd be nice to have ivy+nvidia, ivy+radeon, haswell+amd, haswell+radeon but it's pretty hard to get 4 data points.
I'm pretty sure though i had significantly better performance with my 260 (and my minimums didn't change notably ESPECIALLY on low settings when i put in 770) than he's getting

Try run CPUs at 4.6 if possible in line with our own benches.

i could also have ivy + nvidia but i do'nt really want to go through the hassle of taking the 590 out of my comptuer and put it in my fathers, would take some time and he has to work on his
i'll pm you my skype, although i'll have to dl sc2 on that computer so won't be able to test until tomorrow
