A mechanical keyboard isn't going to turn a regular player into some gosu, but they are definitely nice, but not mandatory.

If you wanna play like Flash you gotta have a DT-35. If you wanna play like MVP you gotta have a Filco. Moving to a mechanical keyboard/DT-35 will make your APM go up 100%, improve your decision making, and give you Flash-like map hax.

I type at a constant 120-130 wpm and can peak near 180 with simplified text. I can type at this rate much, much longer on a mechanical keyboard than I can a generic membrane keyboard. This is because of the activation force being so much lower and requiring less force from my fingers. I'm sure I also receive a small boost in wpm but I have done nothing to test this. If you buy a decent mechanical keyboard, it should last you as long as you'll take care of it. People need to stop hating on the mechanical keyboards just because they can't justify spending the money for one (not aim at you, but in general).

Just saying that you don't HAVE to have a mechanical keyboard to do well in SC2.

Do computer parts like motherboard and CPU need to be compatible or can you put anything together? If they do need to be compatible, how do you know whether it is compatible or not? What other information do I need to know when I am searching for parts? I know that I should try to get enough wattage for power supply but is there anything else that I am missing? Thanks! There is a CPU socket on the motherboard with a certain pin layout and number of pins. The processor must be made for this socket in order for it to fit into the motherboard. Here is an example: Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215 LGA 1156 is the socket. Everything else in the product name I'm not going to explain unless you want me to. You need a LGA 1156 motherboard for this to work (more commonly known as P55 cause that's the chipset). It'll say so on the motherboard: MSI P55-CD53 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130240 Intel came out with a new socket, the LGA 1155. Do not make the mistake of buying a 1155 processor and putting it in a 1156 motherboard or vice versa. THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. On the AMD side of things, it's easy for a newbie to understand as the processors will have "Socket AM__" in its name. All the latest offerings from both Intel and AMD use DDR3 ram. You cannot interchange DDR2 and DDR3 so do not make the mistake of buying DDR2 instead of DDR3. For the power supply, you are looking at the amperage on the 12v rail(s). You want a good one so look at www.jonnyguru.com for reviews if in doubt. You usually can't go wrong by selecting a Seasonic, Corsair, XFX, or Antec power supply though. Sata 2 (3Gbit/s) and Sata 3 (6Gbit/s) are interchangeable. Graphics card will fit in a PCI-E x16 slot which most motherboards will have.

My budget is around 800 USD What is your resolution? 1920x1080 What are you using it for? I want to play starcraft 2 on the lowest settings and possibly stream it at the same time. I also hope that the computer could be able to play Diablo 3 at high settings but I don’t think the specifications for Diablo 3 out is yet so I know it is guesswork atm. What is your upgrade cycle? I am not intending on upgrading the computer so I don’t mind spending a little more right now. I think I may want the i5 2500k CPU When do you plan on building it? As soon as possible Do you plan on overclocking? Yes I am looking to overclocking Do you need an Operating System? No Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No Where are you buying your parts from? I am in the US so possibly newegg or tigerdirect or somewhere. Wherever I can find the lowest prices so I am planning on doing a little research on the parts that you guys suggest. A question I have: how much does the motherboard matter? I see that there are different prices for motherboards and I don’t know if it makes a big difference for things like overclocking and stuff like that. Thanks a lot for the help guys!

Thread jump! This is about what you want to play SC2 on ultra without problem. The motherboard is a little cheap (microATX, so missing connectivity options you're probably not going to use), but at least pre-tax and shipping, that's in budget. Nothing else is really skimping. Is there a good resource anywhere for putting it all together? Based on whatever else you might need to use the computer for, you might change little things (blu ray drive, bigger HDD). But as a straight up mid-budget gaming PC, this one would be hard to beat. The parts are very well balanced with each other, so it will be difficult to upgrade one thing and get better performance.

What is your budget? $1500. If you think I'm already spending this much may as well get a part that's a little bit better, I'm willing to go up a little. What is your resolution? I currently do not have a monitor, so will be using my budget towards that as well. I appreciate all monitor recommendations. What are you using it for? Starcraft 2 gaming, watching movies/youtube videos. Ideally I want the youtube videos/movies to load really fast, and I want starcraft 2 to run with no lag. I also want to be able to do multiple things at once without my computer lagging. Also eventual streaming probably. What is your upgrade cycle? Longer upgrade cycle, probably. When do you plan on building it? I plan on building it within the next month. Do you plan on overclocking? I do plan on overclocking. Do you need an Operating System? Yes. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I don't know, should I? Where are you buying your parts from? The internet, probably newegg? Or the place with the best deals. Thanks for the help! Also if anyone has any chair recommendations or desk recommendations I would appreciate those as well. Also, I have a 32" samsung TV that I plan on using as a second monitor.

Pick a case around $100-$200 to your liking (I'd recommend something from Lian Li, Silverstone, or Coolermaster) and add in a DVD burner for $20. This should put the build at a total of ~$1200 before shipping which leaves you $300 for a monitor. If you think 60gb is too small to be used as a boot / application drive, you can use another $100 to increase it to an 120gb.
