@aldochillbro You want cheap as you can get? Buying new? Well that's not actually very easy, largely because of the cost of windows. Some cheap prebuilts with the right CPU can actually be the way to go because of the cheap windows. But here's the basics (cpu + mobo) for building a tower on your own
Some relatively cheap dual-core Pentium g555 - $57 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116779
A motherboard that can run it - $50 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128527
then add roughly: Some cheap 2x2gb or 2x4gb of RAM - ~$15-30
cheap HDD - ~$60
Bit Fenix Merc Alpha for case - ~$35
DVD-burner - ~$17
Cheap PSU like an Antec Basiq - ~$35
= ~$280

When's the MacBook Pro from? Models from certain recent years should be better for gaming than the above, honestly.

for about 350$
i3-3220 cheapest b75 motherboard 2*2 gb ram some 500gb 7200 rpm hdd bitfenix merc alpha PSU like corsair CX 430 random dvd burner
this will play no problem on low, and later you can add on a GPU for much better graphics

Yeah, but by how much? Sometimes people just never have cleaned vents and heatsinks of dust, and that's enough to fix things. Even if it needs repasting and an external cooling pad, that's still a whole lot cheaper than a new system.
A ~2008 MacBook Pro with Core 2 Duo and 8600M GT is not too far off Celeron G555. Mid 2010 is about the same, depending on model. Newer than that is generally slightly better. Of course I'm not expecting mid 2012 Retina MBP with Core i7 and GT 650M, but some of these models should be usable if working properly.
Anyway, if Windows is required, prebuilts in that range are cheaper, even if occasionally you may need to supplement with something like 1 x 2GB RAM or something like that.
Pentium G645 system with Win7 for $350 (before shipping/tax), for example: here
There are also refurb systems for those who don't care and like to roll the dice.

+ Show Spoiler +Sorry for the horrible english grammar.
Hello! So I am going to build a new computer, as my old one is, well, old. My hardware is outdated and quite worn out. I am going to answer the questions that you've asked the best I can.
What is my budget? My budget is around the 1k$ mark.
What is my resolution? Well, currently I play on highest resolution on my computer, which is 1680x1050. I would however like to play on 1920 × 1080.
What am I using it for? Entertainment. Gaming mostly. Watching some videos, listening to some music and so on.
What is my upgrade cycle? I usually have my technology for 3 years+. I know how to take care of it, and how to maintain it. So yeah, my upgrade cycle is 3 years at the bare minimum. (I'm not sure if I understood this question entirely correctly)
When do I plan on building it? I plan on building it in the early 2013. Jan, Feb, Mar. I'm not saying that I am building it over 3 months, these are just some of the months I am most likely going to build it on.
Do I plan on overclocking? Nope.
Do I need an OS? No, I'm in MSDS.
Do I plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I'm not entirely sure. That is for you guys to decide with the budget I have set, kept in mind.
Where am I buying my parts from? Well, I'm from Denmark. Just north of Germany. Shops are pretty expensive in Denmark, and you are not 100% sure that you can get all the new parts that other countries might have access to, but keep in mind I live close to germany.
Thank you guys for this thread, I see that it has helped lots of people, and you deserve some recognition for your work.
Regards, Dejan // Nuf

2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4gb 1067 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB (I got it like 1.5 years ago) for those who were wondering. And Myrmidon, how would I clean my vents(or anyone else that knows)? By the way, thank you all for replying

As Myrmidon posted above, your laptop is likely more powerful than the measly bare-bones system I posted above. For your budget you're probably not going to do much better, except for the overheating problems. What about one of those silly pads that's supposed to cool a laptop sitting on top of it? I can't remember what they're called.

I am sort of considering a new PC at the moment, but the past 2 that I have bought, I looked hard to find similar spec PC buying individual parts vs getting a good price from a site like Ibuypower, and honestly I cannot see a difference in price... I don't know if I'm just not looking in the right places, but I built a PC on Ibuypower, then went and did the same on 2 sites with individual parts from the PC that were similar or identical and it came out the same price. I normally spend about 1100-1300 for a PC. Is there something about Ibuypower that they cheap out on? I'm very satisfied with my current PC from them..

And on what settings? - Fx 2 module cpu is like a dual core with HT (i3) but with far less performance, although it's better in multithreaded things like encoding (not games at all). - The gpu is complete shit, pretty much a media pc card. Med-high for sc2, low for new games. - The psu is complete shit too, but it will run. - "kits" just contain all the worst excess stock a store has that never sells because it sucks.
I'd post an alternative but I'm going to bed now. Maybe in the morning

Well it would help if you actually posted your comparison since you're probably doing it wrong. And ya Ibuypower might be comparable if you want the same individual components that won't make a difference (eg. 2GB on a shitty GTX 560 or 1866MHz memory) in gaming.

That's a quarter of the build but ya your quarter build is good given the lack of information you provided.

hey guys my brother has a cheap pc he bought a while ago wants to build a new one. i cant find out whatb the motherboard is but i think its pretty shitty. this is a budget build cuz i dont think my mom wants to spend a lot on him. i guess im just going to reuse his cd drive & hdd, and replace everything else. he wants a good computer for gaming, wants to be able to record his xbox 360 gameplay and make videos, hell most likely eventually get an avermedia cap card or something. dont need a monitor or os either.
kinda want to future proof at the same time as not spend a lot. right now i have these components, should i change anything? can i save money somewhere?
i5-3470 cpu MSI Z77A-G41 EVGA SSC 01G-P4-3652-KR GeForce GTX 650 Ti gpu rosewill capstone 450w cooler master hyper 212 cooler cooler master haf 912 case some random 8gb ram
im at about $573 right now, without really checking for price differences just doing a quick put together

You realize you need a new processor if you are going to replace the motherboard?

OK just to give a small example I think I customized on Ibuypower something similar to this compuer
http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/Gamer_Paladin_D875
Its listed at 1579- can get it down to about 1500 with a few tweaks.
I tried to build that on tigerdirect..and could not get any cheaper... Now maybe that is the case with the high end stuff, but unless I did something totally wrong I didn't find "building your own" to be much more effective here. If you can find otherwise, I'd definitely be interested to know!

Hey TL guys,
at the moment I play Sc2 on my Mac and other games on my Ps3 but with new consoles coming out probably next year I want to switch to pure PC Gaming. The problem is that I haven't looked at hardware in the last years so I'm kind of lost. Your help would be greatly appreciated
Budget: I would like to keep it around 600-700€
Resolution: Because my current monitor (Samsung SyncMaster P2270) I would like 1920 ×1080
Usage: I would use it almost exclusively for gaming with a focus on games like D3, Sc2, Dota 2, CS GO etc. So mostly for not that hardware intense games.
Upgrade Cycle: At least 1 year. Better 2 years+
Time: Til next summer
Overclocking: No
OS: I would probably be abled to get Win7 from friends so no
Second GPU for SLI or Crossfire: I guess its not needed for the games I want to play so no (if something of that really makes sense please let me know)
Seller: I live in Germany so buy parts from German resellers (you have two in your list above I think). Also if the price doesn't differ to much I will probably buy the PC from alternate (german PC site where you can "build" your own PC's but they send it to you completed). If it is way more expensive there I will build it myself.
If you have any further questions just ask me
Thanks in advance animus128
