Get a Capstone 450, unless you plan on doing CrossfireX.
Why get a UD3H?
Why get a 922XM when you have no need for it? You're getting a tiny heatsink, you're getting no HDDs, no CrossfireX, no liquid, no nothing?
You can probably bundle some stuff up to save money.
I highly doubt you'll noticed the performance of the M5P over a Samsung 830 or similar SSD for $20+ less. And I doubt you picked it for the warranty.
On October 22 2012 05:40 Alryk wrote:+ Show Spoiler +I'm looking to get a pretty budget gaming build that I can expand on later if need be. I want it as close to 400$ as possible, and the ability to play SC2 and Guild Wars 2 on the side at medium-high on 1080P. I think that is possible within my budget (I know it is for SC2, but not sure about GW2). If anybody could help with this build, or suggest a better one, I would greatly appreciate it. I have a monitor/keyboard/mouse, and a lot of my shopping is from Amazon for Amazon prime. I don't need much storage - a 320GB hard drive would probably be enough but I think I have a good deal on the 60$ one. But every dollar pretty much counts - if I can save 10+$ on a part, please let me know. Build currently: GTX 650 @ 110$ on Amazon DVD Drive 20$Fractal Design Core 1000 40$Antec earthwatts 380D @ 45$G2120 @ 80$G.Skill 8GB Ram @ 33$Asrock B75 Motherboard 55$ Western Digital 500GB Hard Drive @60$I picked a GTX 650 because of its great SC2 performance relative to other stuff. G2120 is just because I wasn't sure if it beats a ~50-60$ Pentium G645 (2.9ghz SB iirc) for cost/performance. I figured 25% increase in price, 10% clock increase and slight IPC increase + lower power consumption makes it worth it? I think I can get a smaller PSU, but I'm not sure and this would allow me to bump up the parts a little bit without having to get a new PSU. I'd love to save money on the Case or anywhere else - so please let me know! Total atm: 443$ - I have an OS. I don't necessarily need to buy now, but I'd like to before christmas. Would black friday be a good time to shave 50-100$ off if I'm lucky?

You can get a Fractal Design Core 1000 for $30 at NCIX: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58341&promoid=1295 Orders over $50 get free shipping, that shouldn't be a problem...
Also the DVD burner, which is overpriced at Amazon: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=45244&promoid=1295
Also, Neo Eco 450C for $37 at NCIX: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=60491 A 400w unit can handle all these low-end configurations.
HDD can also be had at NCIX for same price: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58402&promoid=1295

Yo, I recently decided that gaming on my laptop isn't ideal and wanted to upgrade to a desktop. I do need to buy a monitor with it. Anyway,
Budget
Anywhere 900-1200 USD.
Resolution
1920x1080
Intended Use
Need to be able to play most modern games on medium settings smoothly and play videos in HD.
Upgrade Cycle
About one and one-half to two years or so.
Planned Time To Build
As soon as possible
Plan on Overclocking?
No.
Need an OS?
Yes.
Second GPU/Crossfire
I don't think I would need to with what I'm using it for but I'm a total noob to computer building so if you guys think I should then yeah.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I live in the US but no microcenter or frys nearby so probably newegg.
Thanks for any help in advance

@aBstractx:
Likewise, I would just suggest a HAF 912 or something else (btw the linked case is HAF XM, not HAF 922, though maybe it's considered the 922 update). Something just doesn't click with me and expensive gamer boxes full of holes. You can always add more fans yourself later to most gamer box designs, including the cheap ones. Unless you're trying to get something larger to house some watercooling gear, the extra dead air inside a larger box doesn't do you any favors. Granted, XM is not too much bigger. For that matter, is the extra fan in the list for aesthetics or cooling?
Capstone 450-M instead. 450W is already excessive.
That's a somewhat high price for a Gigabyte UD3.
$140 is a bit high for a 128GB SSD. Plextor M5P is good, but is there any motivation aside from 2 years more warranty to get that over something like a ~$30 cheaper Samsung 830?
Hyper 212 EVO is a good choice, but Xigmatek Gaia at $15 less is probably worth a mention. It's not like the EVO is a different class of product.
@Alryk:
Off the top of my head, the optical drive price is too high: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136247
More savings... maybe to be had at us ncix. Let's check.
Antec Neo Eco 450C is comparable in quality, $36: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=60491
Save $10 on Core 1000: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58341&promoid=1295
You can save $5 on a 500GB 7200rpm hard drive if you think Seagate is okay: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63468&promoid=1295
On Black Friday, the significant savings are usually on the more premium items, and they're often gone quickly. You wouldn't find much to save on for these components, I would think.

Im sure someone else will come by in just a moment. it slowed down after i tabbed over, its odd because up until 1 month ago everything was fine =/. minigun told me that he used to have the same issue aswell, up until someone changed a few settings in his bios and that solved the problem
Oh. What are your framerates in this scenario when you dont tab out to a different window then? Games do different things when they lose the focus.
Also I really doubt any fiddling around in the BIOS solved miniguns problem unless it was overclock related, which doesnt pertain to you because your not overclocking.
That being said. Why are you not overclocking when you spent the money on a k processor?
Also 60 FPS lategame is fine, in fact the best any processor can do is about 40 FPS in ultimate 1v1 confrontations at 200v200. I dont really know what your experience in early game is though.

Alright, so I'm gonna have around ~350$ to spend on new parts for my pc. Right now I have a HP Pavilion p6674y Desktop PC. Processor 2.8 Hz Phenom Quad-Core RAM 6 GB DDR3 Hard Drive 1000 GB Graphics Coprocessor ATI Radeon HD 4200 Chipset Brand AMD
With the exception of a GT 520 GPU. My screen Resolution is 1600x900 but I play on 1280 x 768. Any suggestions on what i should get?

For what purpose exactly? General gaming? SC2 primarily?
That must be a second-gen Phenom (II) since you've got DDR3 so the CPU is still okay (Phenom II x4 920, I'm guessing? nvm, it's a Ph II x4 820, not much different really). Not that great for SC2 but not bad either, and still decent for nearly anything else
So if this isn't primarily a SC2 upgrade, you could get away with just a video card (and maybe power supply is in order as well) upgrade for about ~$150-200: something like a Radeon HD 7770 or HD 7850 1GB with a power supply like an Antec 380D if it fits your current pre-built PC's case.
By the way, I hope you meant that you're playing at 1280x720 and not 1280x768, as that's not keeping the 16 : 9 aspect ratio of the screen and the scaling would look worse because it would stretch the image, unless you're forcing it to be "fullscreen" but "centered" (or whatever the option is called in the NV control panel).

Fantastic, Thank you @Skyr and Myrmidon. Is there any benefit to a G2120 over the G645? Or would it be worth it to go up to a quad core?
Edit: OEM dvd Drive means I need my own SATA cable right?

for the 550W i like it bcuz its modular, only $20 more expensive than the 450, and i think down the line i will be using crossfire. 550W is enough for crossfire right & overclocking ? like not in 2 years, probably a few months or so after i build it
im going to change the heatsink but i think im going to get the corsair H60 liquid cooler.
can you recommend a good overclocking motherboard to me ?

The benefits of the G2120 is as you already mentioned, Ivybridge and slightly higher clock. An core i5 probably won't be worth it.
The motherboard provides two SATA cables so unless you have a third drive you plan on using, not having enough SATA cables shouldn't be an issue.

k need a quick check on this. buddy wants a new pc, he basicly wants a nice machine that works fine , runs games and lasts him for a while.
current setup:
Antec Three Hundred Midi Tower 8GB Corsair Vengeance Black DDR3-1600 1024MB Gigabyte Radeon HD 7770 GHz 350 Watt be quiet! Pure Power L7 Intel Core i5 3450 4x 3.10GHz So.1155 BOX 500GB Samsung Spinpoint M8 HN-M500BB ASRock P75 Pro3 Intel B75 So.1155 Dual
esp on the mobo id like comments since thats not my area. also other options for psu and case? rest should be fine. considering a aftermarket cooler for quietness, any cheap silent options?
currently the cart would be at 520€ with 600ish beeing the budget so 80 left for ssd(~60 for a 64gb m4 or something) and a cooler.

currently the cart would be at 520€ with 600ish beeing the budget so 80 left for ssd(~60 for a 64gb m4 or something) and a cooler. Antec 300 has too many holes and the top 140mm fan, oldschool hard drive bare mounting... not the best choice for low noise.
I'm going to guess there's probably something cheaper than Corsair Vengeance RAM, so you might want to take that instead. I don't expect much of a price difference though.
Which Gigabyte cooler is it using? It think you probably want something else. Gigabyte's: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Gigabyte/HD_7770_OC/25.html
Others (note the model; sometimes they have multiple cooler designs per GPU, certainly for the Sapphire): http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/HD_7770_DirectCU/25.html http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Sapphire/HD_7770_Vapor-X/27.html http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_7770_iCooler/27.html
Pure Power L7 should be fairly quiet, but it's on the low side of quality (but not to the point of saying that you definitely should replace it)
You purposefully chose a 5400rpm, 2.5" (laptop) hard drive for lower noise, lower performance? I don't think Antec 300 mounts 2.5" drives though. Or if they have an adapter, they probably don't have a second one for the SSD too.
You might be able to get something a little worse than B75 Pro3, but there is probably not much to be saved there.
A Core i5 shouldn't be run that hard in such a system, to bring it to 100% load. Maybe you can get by with the stock cooler and setting the fan speeds to be lower. There are some reasonable low-cost, low-noise aftermarket CPU cooler options though.

Hey guys, anyone has a good suggestion for a PSU? I got these specs: i5 2500k @ 3,6ghz , z68, sapphire 7850 oc edition, 8gb DDR3 1600mhz, x2 ssds agility 3, x1 HDD. My current PSU is almost 5year old 400w one and i don't know which brand... I was thinking about getting one with more watts cause i want to add another 7850 for Xfire in the near future ( would also like some info about this one). I think 400w is very low for this setup and i am even scared to oc my CPU because of that.
|
If it's spec'd to handle 400W continuously, is built well, uses good-quality Japanese capacitors for electrolytics, etc. then that is overkill. If it's more mediocre, it should still be okay, mostly. If it's not a good power supply, I'd replace it, considering it is five years old. What is the exact model?
That kind of build draws around 200W full load, with programs designed to draw more power than any real-world actual use. With very heavy CPU and GPU overclocks on ambient temperature cooling methods, you're not getting anywhere near 300W.
You sure about Crossfire?
Where are you buying from? (what is the list of options / prices?)
|
I am not sure about the model I ll have to check it tomorrow cause I am not using my pc atm, I am guessing though that it's a bad one since I bought that computer almost 5 years ago from a greek computer shop and I don't really trust them on their builds. I have upgraded everything except for the PSU and the case.
200W full load? I thought it would be a lot more to be honest!
I am not really sure about Crossfire, although i think 7850 cf does ok. I just want to get rid of it in case it causes any problems in the future...
I ll probably buy it from a greek retail shop, (you will notice prices are kinda high ) I hope you can use the translation.

Hi!
I'm looking to build a computer for Christmas-y time. I haven't built a computer recently, so I thought I could use some help from you lovely teamliquiders. I'm looking to build something that will last a pretty long time (3+ years) for mostly gaming, and the occasional streaming/video editing. I'm trying to piece together a fairly powerful machine that is still cost efficient with respect to power/cost. I attached the questionnaire and a preliminary list of stuff below.
+ Show Spoiler [Questionnaire] +What is your budget? Around $1000-$1200 Canadian including shipping and stuff (which is more or less the same as American).
What is your resolution? 1920x1080
What are you using it for? Mostly gaming. Some video editing and some streaming.
What is your upgrade cycle? 3+ years
When do you plan on building it? Sometime between now and Christmas.
Do you plan on overclocking? Probably not, though I wouldn't mind having the option available to play with (not looking for liquid nitrogen cooling though).
Do you need an Operating System? No.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No.
Where are you buying your parts from? Newegg.ca, Tigerdirect.ca, Ncix.ca, pretty much any canadian website/store. If it's significantly cheaper from a US store, I can go that route as well, although I'd prefer not to.
+ Show Spoiler [Tentative list of parts] +
The i5 3570k was suggested by a lot of my friends, but I'm not quite sure about what motherboard to get. I don't intend to overclock much, or if I do, it'll just be to dabble in it a bit (I realize I'm getting a 3570k, I feel like it'd be nice to at least have the option there). Perhaps someone can enlighten me on the motherboard, or suggest a different/better one. The PSU seems like overkill (I think?), but it was pretty cheap when combo'd with the RAM. A friend suggested getting the 1866 RAM, as it's apparently slightly better, and about a $6 dollar difference from the 1600 one (GSkill still reminds me of GSL intros...). I intend to use an SSD for boot/frequently played games, and then the HDD just for storage and such. I'm a bit weary of the SSD department though; I've read that quite a few people seem to have problems with them. I'm also a bit clueless on the GPU; I've heard good things about both nVidia and AMD recently, but I'm not up to date on the recent cards. The 660Ti seemed like a good power/price option, though I don't mind either company (I've mostly used AMD before, but not a big deal to use either).
I'm also curious for any other Canadians, does Black Friday tend to have any effect in Canadian shops as well? I haven't ever looked seriously before, so I'm kind of in the dark about that.
Any feedback/comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
|
Newegg doesn't offer pricematching so it's a pretty bad place to shop besides the amazing shellshockers / other deals that happen only a few times a year.
There won't be a noticeable difference between 1866MHz and 1600MHz in gaming performance. You're essentially paying $10 more for nothing.
A Radeon HD7950 is generally better than a GTX 660 Ti.
Black Friday isn't anything special in Canada. It's a joke of a sale compared to Boxing Day, anniversary sales, and grand openings.

can you guys review the build now please? i took some of your advice into consideration. i realize that the haf xm was expensive and too big so i changed it but not with the $50 case. just the 922 because i dont like the silver/paintless finish inside that case.
also, i kept the 550w because its only $20 more, its modular & i do plan on using crossfire.
i swapped the plextor with a samsung 830 too.
i woulod like to maybe hear some of your suggestions for a motherboard thats good for overclocking thats better than the gigabyte ud3 or udh3 @ $150.
thanks forhelping me fellas

The H60 is about as good as a Hyper 212 Evo.
