Could you reccomend me a good quality 500W model? Also do you know if my other parts are compatible/optimal? Thanks Corsair Builder CX500 is an example. There are plenty others, just read through a couple recent pages of this thread to see what was recommended. edit: The parts are compatible and will make a computer that is fairly well-balanced, but shifted towards additional CPU performance over GPU performance, which is what is great for SC2 (and streaming). Whether that's optimal depends on your needs of course.
Yeah, well that's pretty much what I will be using it for. Thanks :D

Could you reccomend me a good quality 500W model? Also do you know if my other parts are compatible/optimal? Thanks Your case is very expensive, your graphics card is overpriced (I got my 560ti for $210 here in Aus a year ago), and beaten by the similarly priced 7850. PSU lines in that wattage that come to mind are the capstone 450, antec neo eco 450/520, antec vp 450/550, antec high current gamer ~500 (idk models)... There are other decent options, but these are the ones I'm familiar with. Corsair builder series too I guess, but they can have noise issues.
Is it worth getting the expensive case? If not what is another good case I could get as I'm trying to save as much money as possible without getting something crap. The Antec VP 550 seems to be the cheapest out of the PSU's reccomended so I will probably go with that. Also should I get the 7850 or the 560ti? I'm looking at the parts on Pccasegear and they seem to be pretty similar prices ($250~)

Speaking of the VP450, I recently built a system for a friend and had to settle for one. In HWMonitor it read the 12v line at 8v. Is this going to be a problem or is HWMonitor just reading it wrong?

If the computer is running under anything resembling a load, I'm taking a wild-ass stab in the dark that HWMonitor is smoking crack.

HD7850 down to 160€ here in france....
Is amd killing it's prices?

AMD lowered its prices across the board recently.

I know TSMC 28nm is still in pretty high demand, but apparently yields are okay these days. Anyway, Pitcairn (78xx series) die is relatively small at 212mm^2, halfway in size between the old 57xx/67xx and 68xx. How much are those selling for these days? There's no reason 78xx series couldn't cost less than it has been if AMD wants, hence the price drops to keep competitive in relative position with the much-faster GTX 660 Ti.
So where's GK106, anyway? Is Nvidia skipping it this generation? Once the GTX 660 Ti released and GTX 660 OEM specs were revealed (further cut-down GK104), and GT 650 is rumored to just be a GDDR5 version of GT 640 (GK107)... seems like the whole product stack might be accounted for?

My buddy asked me to put together a computer for him, so I made him this.
Gigabyte (GV-R697OC-2GD) AMD Radeon HD 6970 Chipset 199.99 Intel Core i5-3570K Quad-Core Socket LGA1155, 3.4Ghz, 6MB L3 Cache, 22nm MSI Z77A-G45 Socket 1155 Intel Z77 Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Seagate Barracuda (ST1000DM003) SATA3 6.0Gb/s 1TB Kingston HyperX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz Samsung SH-222BB/BEBE SATA Black 22X DVD-Writer OEM Antec TP-650 Truepower New 650W Continuous Power Supply 59.89
This is to be just a general computer, and he asked that it be able to play games such as Guild Wars 2 at least at a resolution of 1600 x 900, maybe 1920 x 1080 (he would be fine with medium to high graphics). I left the case out because he wants that. The budget was 800 which this falls perfectly on top of not including the case.
He is not an experienced overclocker so it is not a big deal when it comes to overclocking.
OS also not nessecary he has one. Upgrade cycle shouldn't be for a while, as long he takes care of it..

I would go with a 7850 instead of a 6970, Similar price, similar performance yet the 7850 uses 100w less under load. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/509?vs=549
Also a Rosewill Capstone 450 is also similar price as the antec but higher quality and effiecency. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066
Oh and the RAM you have listed is 1.65v. Find a 1.5v kit.
|
He's not in NA (no Rosewill) if a 6970 is 199.99 units of something. The Capstone is just a rebrand of Super Flower Golden Green Pro though.
Anyway, 59.89 Euros or GBP wouldn't be that bad for a 650W TruePower New, but that's significantly overkill, and you can get something cheaper that's decent.
I'd suggest cutting down in a few places like the processor and motherboard to get an SSD.
So where are you actually buying from?
|
Hey, thanks! I am buying from Canadas Computers.
Some prices on the items here...
Thermaltake TR2 500W $45.99 Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Direct Heat Pipe CPU Cooler R2 $35.99 Seagate Barracuda SATA3 6.0Gb/s 1TB 64MB Cache $79.99 G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Dual Channel Kit (1.5v) $47.99 Intel Core i5-3570K Quad-Core Socket LGA1155, 3.4Ghz, 6MB L3 Cache, 22nm $219.99 MSI Z77A-G45 Socket 1155 Intel Z77 Chipset DDR3 $134.99
$584 - Total of the listed above. ^^
$824 - With cheapest 7850 chipset at CC (The Asus Model)
He also doesn't have a case still just to remind people, but I understand he wants to buy his own baller case. Just want to get the build finalized before he goes ahead to choose one.
|
Oh, 6970 must have dropped a lot in price then / Canada Computers sale...
TR2 500W is like three tiers worse than the TruePower New, so I'd avoid that. Isn't the TPN only instore purchase, only at Barrie, London, and Whitby? Which location?

I want to be able to use infestors, ghosts, and templar in a maxed out 4v4 while using skype, rhapsody, and sc2 gears with APM alert. I do not have a lot of photos or any movies.
To give myself some future-proofing, I would like to start with i5 2500k so I have some room to grow and OC later. I am over budget so I really can't go higher.
Looking for general feedback.
$220 Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623I52500k

$100 Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/90G 2.5" 90GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)
$39 G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL
$15 SAMSUNG 22X DVD Burner SATA Model SH-222BB/BEBE - OEM
$100 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM
$48 NZXT Apollo Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case after discount (It's a little crappy but come on, super cool)
That's about $850.
Is using my Vista copy bad until I have more money? Any other things that should be upgraded/downgraded?

Last time I asked people they said I didn't need a heat sink until i actually overclocked so I got rid of it... ? No compatability issues? GPU okay for what I'm trying to do? Thanks for the deal links
|
Installing most heatsinks requires you to install a backplate. Without a CPU cutout hole, you're going to be required to remove the entire motherboard to install it (basically building the entire computer again to install a $20 heatsink). It's up to you whether you want to go through that trouble or not. If you decide now you'll install a heatsink later and than later decide that it isn't worth it than you would have just wasted money on a 2500k and Z77 setup...
|
I would seriously consider Corsair CX400 for $30 over Antec VP350 for $25. http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=33357&promoid=1371
But considering that the case has a top-mounted power supply, I think the VP350 cables would be long enough. It's definitely less efficient and has a few other drawbacks, though it's not bad.
Also, get the heatsink now, unless you're a masochist...

Basically anything that fits LGA1155 and accepts 120mm fans. The stock answer is the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ or 212 Evo.
