Sorry to post this here, but i didnt want to open another generic advise thread.
I would like to buy a notebook/netbook which can do all of these things:
- browse the internet - watch videos (online) - run basic aplications like - listen to music while doing other stuff - good battery life
My budget would be around 300 to 400€
Thanks a lot!
|
What is your budget?
I'd like to spend no more than $1250 including tax and monitor but if I can get away with $1000, even better.
What is your resolution?
Not sure how to answer this question. I'd like to get a 21" monitor flatscreen and be able to play movies and games at a good resolution.
What are you using it for?
SC2 (high settings) & D3 (high settings), some older FPS and hopefully some current gen games; blogging; coding; a bit of website design; digital photos; playing music; audio recording; video chat with family and friends; watching movies (both DVD & Streaming);
What is your upgrade cycle?
Not sure. 2 to 3 years? So long.
When do you plan on building it?
In the next few weeks
Do you plan on overclocking?
I don't think so.
Do you need an Operating System?
Yes
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Don't think so.
Where are you buying your parts from?
Newegg
|
So now you want to build a computer? Have you gotten the financing from Newegg?
You can surely get away with something like a $700 computer including monitor, keyboard, and mouse on Newegg if you build your own. And a pretty good one too.

Im looking at this mobo for i5 3570k cpu. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138352 I plan on overclocking, is this mobo ok for overclocking? Also, in terms of RAM, any signifcant difference b/t 8gb vs 16 gb? and 1333 vs 1600 vs 1866? lastly, is the cool master 212 decent enough for overclocking?
|
Yes, the mobo is good for overclocking.
There is not much difference between 1333mhz, 1600mhz, and 1866mhz. 0-1% difference in performance.
8gb vs 16gb for gaming is silly. You want 8gb, you won't be running 5 games at once.
Yes Hyper 212, +, or evo are all good for overclocking.

My brother has the AMD FX 8 core http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103961 on the computer that his friend built him. For some reason, he decided not to get a graphics card...?!? For around $150, what graphics card should he get? are there really much differences in the different brands? Lastly, was my brother's friend's decision of getting the 8 core a good one? Personally, I feel that its a waste. I mean, do you really need 8 core?

The "8 core" processor he got has terrible lightly threaded performance, and similar heavily threaded performance to a 2600k. In other words, for 99% of people, it's a shitty processor that costs more than a 2500k, and will perform worse for them. If you're constantly running it as a dedicated server or something, then it would possibly make sense.
A 6850 (or 6870 if you get a good special) would be in that pricerange.
EDIT: Thought it was the flagship bulldozer. I cannot think of a possible reason anyone would get that particular model.

Myrmidon, you recommended me things and i just brought them without checking, but I realized the motherbroad was too big for my case. I'm now really depressed lol.... I'm gonna have to go either return the case and get a new one or something..
|
Wow I'm a retard sorry, the first time I made that mistake in a while. I must have switched the motherboard or case at some point. I'm used to seeing cheap motherboards for builds all being microATX.
One of the reasons I picked the Core 1000 was because OEM power supplies like the SS-300ET have short cables. A full-sized ATX case with bottom-mounted power supply may not fit well with that. You'd probably want a model also with a top-mounted power supply, or just send back the motherboard and get a microATX model instead. Pretty much this is just a warning not to get a typical ATX gamer case with the power supply at bottom, or some cables may have to be inconveniently stretched or may not even fit.

I am probably going to best buy and get a new case or something. I really hate waiting and don't really have the patience to call up newegg to ship back and forth. I will probably use the case for future projects. Another problem i have is that the psu did not ship with a power cord. I searched around the house and found a 10A 125V power cord for an old gateway psu: http://www.newpowersupply.com/delta_dps_300ab_15b_300w_replacement_power_supply_20_pin_w_sata_bulk_bestec_model_atx_300_12e__rev_d1r-pr-807.html Will this work or do I have to buy a new power cord too?

Thanks. I switched to this card and ordered it, but after looking into it more the card seems to be long. Will it fit in the Cooler Master HAF 912 case?
|
It's just a power cord, and the computer's going to use way less than 2A on 120V nominal, from the wall (much less than the rating of these things). If any power cord from any previous appliance or computer fits, it will work.

I'd need to check, but it may not fit with the upper hard drive cage installed. With it removed (leaving you with two 3.5" and two 2.5" hard drive bays left, probably enough for most users), it will definitely fit. edit: it's too long without the upper drive cage removed

Yes however you going to have to remove your HDD Cage. According to newegg the 6870OC is 11.42" long. According to Newegg the HAF 912 can support long cards like the GTX 480(10.5") and the 5970(12") with removal of the HDD Cage.
I should of thunk more.

~$1000 Budget doesn't include monitor and peripherals.
What is your resolution?
1920x1080
What are you using it for?
Mostly SC2 and D3 for now. Probably some upcoming games as well. I also heavily use Excel and other statistical software with large amounts of data at a time (20,000+ rows).
What is your upgrade cycle?
~4 years
When do you plan on building it?
Now
Do you plan on overclocking?
No
Do you need an Operating System?
No
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No
Where are you buying your parts from?
Preferably from Memory Express Edmonton South since they have price beat and I can pick up to save on shipping (http://www.memoryexpress.com/). I am also willing to order from NCIX, newegg.ca, Canada Computer and Electronics, Tiger Direct and Best Direct if they have really good deals that Memory Express doesn't have.
This is my first time attempting to build a computer. Will I need to buy any misc. accessories?
Thanks in advance!
So I put together a build and hope get some help going over the parts to make sure they work together or if there are better alternatives. Let me know if I forgot anything. hey guys, well here's mine:
What is your budget? $1100 absolute maximum. Would prefer to spend <$1000 so I can afford to get a nice dual monitor setup.
What is your resolution? 1920x1200
What are you using it for? Starcraft II and Photography
What is your upgrade cycle? 3-4 years, with minor variance either direction.
When do you plan on building it? Within 4-5 months from now.
Do you plan on overclocking? No
Do you need an Operating System? Nope
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No
Where are you buying your parts from? Canada computers
Additional notes: Because I will be using this mostly for editing thousands and thousands of photos, RAM is key (16GB min. would be most ideal). Speed secondary. I will not require a graphic(ATI) nor a sound card, as I already have those
Thank you very much!

I'm looking for a new internal hard drive (1 tb). The prices are still relatively high, and I'm going to need one by the end of summer. Should I just get one if it goes on sale now, or are the prices expected to go down anytime soon?
