If the difference in noise, performance, cooling is noticeable or if nobody has experience with the one I mentioned in my list, I have no problems buying this one separate. -If I understood correct, I install windows and get everything working, and after that I should be able to overclock my cpu through bios, and with my rig, there should be a setting for a multiplier for my cpu, and according to what SkyR said in another thread, a 40-45 range is a good place to start. I should then stress test my cpu with prime95. Did I miss anything that I should do in between? -I should easily be able to overclock my 2500k to 4.2ghz or so, and even that should be a mild overclock, and wouldn't decrease the lifespan of my parts. Sorry for repeating some questions that have no doubt been answered, this is my first time building a gaming rig by myself, and a 800€ investment is something that I really dont want to take too many chances with. Z68 allows for use of IGP which in turn allows for features like Lucid and Quick Sync but both are pretty useless for the average consumer. The only benefit of being able to use the IGP for most people is you will have a backup incase your GPU dies. Yes, the 450w variant is enough even for an overclocked 2500k 7850 configuration since the two components will only use about 250w (that's accounting for overclocks). True Spirit should be fine. Yes, 40-45 (4GHz - 4.5GHz) is a good place to start. You'd stress test once at stock settings to check temperatures to ensure the heatsink is properly installed. Yes, 4.2GHz is a mild overclock and won't decrease lifespan significantly.
Thanks for the help! And thanks to everyone from before too! I placed my order today, I'll be sure to give updates as I get my computer together and what sort of service I got from HWV. All the help I got was really greatly appreciated, not only was I able to make a way better computer for the same amount of money that I was ready to invest, I will also get a computer that actually meets my expectations, which I would not have gotten alone.

The only thing you have to worry about is case room, and you should be ok there. If its a case for an matx board only, you might have some measuring to do.
I dont think the motherboard compatibility list is just about the mounting holes for the socket. if that was true wouldnt all motherboards be compatible? Isnt it about things on the mobo such as vrm design, distance to pcie lanes and other various things?
|
Your talking about mounting holes for a cooler, not the standoffs for mounting the motherboard into the case. So as far as mounting a cooler is concerned there is nothing stopping you as far as being a z77. Now whether or not the cooler is too big for the individual chipset itself is another story. But it has nothing to do with the southbridge. When we say Z77 we are talking about the southbridge chip.

Even if Z68 and Z77 boards were the same, theoretically, you wouldn't know if the manufacturer decided to do something different with the location of components until someone tries it out. For instance, Asus mITX boards (and only mITX) will not work properly with Corsair's water coolers because the backplate grinds up against a transistor...this caught quite a number of people by surprise.
If anything, the Macho probably conflicts with the VRM heatsinks on that Z68 Asus motherboard because I know that was that was the case for Gigabyte's high end motherboards. Idiotic VRM and MOSFET heatsinks combined with Gigabyte's love for making the CPU socket area really tight was a recipe for disaster. Perhaps cramming enthusiast features in such a small package forced Asus to make similar concessions in component placement.

well, the only source i have it works is this, not sure if that's reliable enough (the one in the picture isn't the hr-02). Maybe I should just grow some balls and try it out for myself.

Actually given that the noctua nh-d14 fits on asus z77 boards, I wouldn't worry about the macho fitting :p Unless you're getting a really small board/case, but I assume you're not.

Well, like I said, im getting a mATX board (preferably Gene) in an mATX case (PS07B). I already know it fits in the case, although barely. If you look at the compatibility sheet, about half of the mATX board does not fit with the macho because of various problems like PCIE lane, VRM, retention kits. I just rechecked and the z68 gene fits with some new brackets. Z77 probably will as well then.

Gigabyte doesn't offer that many attractive boards so the UD3H is probably overpriced...
G.Skill Ares is probably overpriced.
Worth is subjective, if you're lazy or have so many programs that you need a 180GB SSD than it is probably worth it.
Corsair 750w tells us nothing besides that it's a Corsair. There's HX750, AX750, TX750v2, TX750M. Regardless, a 750w unit is overkill even for SLI GTX 680.
If Starcraft II is your primary concern than doing SLI GTX 680 is a stupid way to waste money.
Peripherals are all personal preference.
You're missing a heatsink for overclocking.
Aesthetics depends on the individual and we can't really define what is better looking for you or suggest something that is better looking when you do not define what is good looking.

Need some help from TL!
5 year old computer with a chief complaint of freezing suddenly, especially during times of stress. But sometimes I find it freezing doing the most relaxing things like surfing the net. When the screen freezes, nothing moves, no sound, no nothing, and I need to press the restart button. Most of the time when I restart, it fails to boot (does a couple weird beeps) until I switch it on and off a few times then it works.
Core2Duo 6700, 3gm ram, Radeon HD2900XT. Temps in bios after freezing is upper 40s. Never been overclocked.
I have tried dusting the computer, re-arranging parts like gfx card, RAM... However my computer knowledge is limited. Need some suggestions!

I'm deciding between a GTX560 (possibly 560Ti) or an HD6870 for a new rig i'm planning on building. I plan on using it for Diablo 3, SC2, Hon, dota 2 @ 1920x1080, and i dont plan on OCing either card. On a related note, why is nvidia usually preferred over ATI? i heard that nvidia cards tend to OC better, and they have better drivers.

A 6870 can max those games on ultra at 1080p. A GTX 560 offers similar performance but is often times more expensive than the 6870.
Nvidia puts more into marketing.

P67 FTW SLI is overkill for a novice.
No SSD for this price range means you don't know what you're doing in component selection.

Hey guys im building a computer for the first time and I was looking at these kind of specs for my comuter, although if someone can find a way to fit in a i5-2500k I would be grateful!
Intel Core i5 2400 Processor 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333Mhz Memory Novatech ATX Gaming Case Novatech PowerStation Production 400W PSU Intel H67 Chipset Motherboard
I don't anything about motherboards so any help would be appreciated there. For my GPU i was looking for a GeForce GTX 550 Ti OC 1024MB GDDR5. The links i used for these can found here :http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/barebones/bb-i5254e.html , the GPU is from the same site at £92. All in all i have a budget of about £400 and would like some advice on this spec and pricing.
I would like to be able to do low-mid quality stream of SC2, and when just 1v1 play at high settings with no stream. Also anywhere i could find a cheap HDD and fan etc would be appreciated.

It's really difficult to give advice if you don't for instance... state the purpose of the computer or your budget.
However, 580 is obsolete. I'd get a 7950 instead, the price drops have made this very attractive and it overclocks like a beast while consuming almost no power. The memory is meh, just get a 2x4gb 1600mhz CL9 kit for ~40 dollars, preferably ones without tall heatspreaders.
2500k is way better in cost efficiency for gaming, do you need hyperthreading? if not, you should save 100 and go with 2500k instead.
The case's too costly for that build in my opinion but if you like it that's fine. I'd still suggest you take a look at cases like HAF 912 or BitFenix Shinobi.
That motherboard is WAY overkill and completely pointless for your presumed usage(although I have no clue because you didn't tell anything). I'd suggest you instead get something like Asrock p67 pro3 or maybe some Z77 board but I have no idea about any of those
The power supply is overkill and it's not all that good anyway, I'd suggest that for this kind of a build you instead get something like Super Flower Golden Green 400/450(Capstone 450)

Same thing for the power supply, and this time it's not just aesthetics. Don't get that power supply if you care about your computer. i suggest something like super flower golden green 400-450w or whatever decent ones you have (Need to see a list if you want me to pick one)
I wouldnt get a H67 board, a H61 board with USB3 should be good enough, I doubt the controller being third party has any effect for you, most people don't even use USB3(I know myself or anyone in my family have never needed it)
Make sure that the RAM is 1.5V, it's better with SB processors.
GTX 550 Ti is overpriced junk, get something like Radeon HD 6850 instead while it's in stock. It's just slightly more and far better. If that's too costly get Radeon HD 6770 instead, it's better than 550 Ti and significantly cheaper.

Sorry, I read the OP like a week ago, tried, got confused and kind of went another way I guess. I will RESTART here lol...
I am looking for a computer to
A: Game on primarily for now B: When I go to school in the fall, be able to handle video production and editing suites
I have a 1500 dollar budget so nice parts aren't a big deal for me. My buddy said 25 2500k's are going to be "old news" as of next year, so I should just spend the extra and get an i7. I read that most computers don't need 16 GB of RAM so I went with the nicer Kingston Hyper X RAM because I was under budget, this of course coming after I realized processors didn't come with heatsinks. I might get into overclocking later, but it really ins't a big concern for me, I don't want to ruin my stuff. The graphics card section in the OP also seems out of date, so I was just going with reviews, and there is a 60$ rebate on the GTX580 superoverclocked edition which got good reviews..!

Please post the info requested from the OP:
On July 21 2010 11:35 FragKrag wrote:+ Show Spoiler [Want a list of parts/Build?] +Important questions you should ask yourself
If you request a build, please answer these questions. We will spend as much effort on your build as you spend on your answers to these questions! I urge people to abstain from providing builds unless all the questions are answered.
What is your budget?
This should be an obvious one, you should determine a price range that best describes how much you want to spend on your build. It makes it easier for people to make recommendations.
What is your resolution?
This is extremely important especially for a gaming machine. I see people all the time asking for a video card recommendation and 5 people reply "5850" and the person hasn't even given their gaming resolution; it turns out the person games at 1280x1024 and could have ended up wasting $200 on a card that is total and complete overkill for his resolution.
What are you using it for?
Mostly gaming? Some gaming with video encoding mixed in? Photoshop? Streaming? All this matters, you can end up spending a lot of money and not be able to do anything you wanted to or you can spend a lot of money on stuff you don't even want to do.
What is your upgrade cycle?
Knowing the answer to this question makes it easier for people to recommend CPU sockets and GPUs so you get the most for your money. A person with a longer upgrade (2+ years) cycle will probably end up spending more initially but end up saving more at the expense of some performance. On the other hand a person with a shorter upgrade cycle (1 - 2 years) wants to spend less initially so they can put more money toward their next build.
When do you plan on building it?
Computer parts shift in prices often. With the release of new products, exist prices may drop further. Even without the release of new prices, changes in supply can affect the price of a specific part. The HD 5850 was supposed to retail at the $260 mark, but in a mere 4-5 months after its release it climbed to top $300 for basic reference models.
Do you plan on overclocking?
If you plan on overclocking, the motherboard choice and heatsink choice will be affected. Enthusiast overclocking requires enthusiast heatsinks and at least a stable motherboard. A simple budget Foxconn motherboard will not be adequate for your overclocking needs!
Do you need an Operating System?
An OS is around $100. It affects how much of your budget we can spend on the actual hardware.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
CrossFire and SLI are powerful solutions that allow higher performance, but in order to utilize them, we have to choose motherboards and PSUs that can support the increased demands that Crossfire and SLI place on your components.
Where are you buying your parts from?
If you have a nearby Fry's or Microcenter you can utilize their deals. If you're in Europe you obviously cannot use Newegg/Fry's/Microcenter so we need to know where you are from to put together a list of parts from a website or area you can actually buy from.
If you can't answer these questions, make sure you can answer them before you ask us to help you put together a list of parts for you. Every single question affects the build we will put together for you greatly so make sure you can answer them accurately!

Budget: 1200-1500 Resolution: Max 1920 x 1080 Uses: Lots of gaming, and heavy video production for school Cycle: 2 Years, want something to last me for a while! Build time: Soonest. I am going away for 4 months in May to work, and going to be gaming with colleagues. OC: Seems a bit over the top for me, my stock machines seem to run fine, don't know why you would HAVE to overclock it, but wouldn't mind if some parts were able to be mildly overclocked. OS: Use Windows Ultimate pirated edition...?? Always works for me. SLI/CF: Was thinking about gettinga powerful single GPU over dual GPU's.
Buying all my stuff from Canada's computers, they are good, and have dealth with them before!
Help would be appreciated, I took the forum noob route, so this should be a step in the right direction!

You realize that the ram doesn't even run at 1866 without overclocking, right? Not to mention that that ram isn't even good ....
The GTX 580 got good reviews like 2 years ago... It's completely obsolete. That's the reason they are giving a large rebate, and even with that it's way overpriced.
You realize that the i7 is going to be old news the same second that the i5 is going to be, right?
You aren't even giving a resolution... Either way my build is infinitely better and reading skyR's post as well gives you a decent idea for where to go, for further advice you should try to give us the necessary information(Read the post by phar)
edit: well of course you ninjad me..
