I used to play WoW with a 600 ping. It was annoying but didnt affect my game that much. Try playing starcraft with a 600 ping and get back to me on how effective you are.
If blizzard dont put LAN in, they will be dooming SC2 as a competative esport. No matter how wonderful and fantastic battlenet 2 is, lag during competative play will destroy the game and only a lan connection can garentee lag free games.

It was said (don’t remember his name, long haired producer always looking gloomy hehe), that they were considering whether or not to include LAN, that statement along with the fact that LAN has been dropped from DIII make me think it’s gonna get scrapped from SC2 aswell. I mean the fact that they're even considering it, is a clear sign that something new and different is in store for us.
Also Blizzard has time and again said that they are focusing hard on the community, on bringing people together (sounds like a slogan for Microsoft or something). What better way than to dump LAN and have every single multiplayer match played over B.Net.
The same long haired guy, when asked whether or not video exporting would be included in the game, basically started talking about something else and then returning to the question saying that at this point they weren’t including it. That’s the same as no to me. And it actually makes sense in the context of my original post, there’s just no need for it.
As for lag, well I have no idea. I would imagine that Blizzard would setup dedicated servers to tournament matches, especially in Korea. Also according to an article over on www.diii.net the new B.Net 2.0 will perhaps dump the current regional gateways, and a new technology will be in place that will decrease lag overall. Goes without saying but B.net is WAY outdated.
As for B.Net crashing.. well I guess it’s no different than if the servers crash for the WoW addicts, just have to wait until they get up before you can continue playing.
Also don’t forget about piracy, they can cut down on piracy BIG TIME if they actually decide to drop LAN, don’t think they have many problems with piracy for WoW.
Personally I’ve never played a game over LAN. ICCup or B.net for me, so I couldn’t care less if they drop it from the game. It could actually be a really smart decision business wise, if they could somehow get a piece of the subscription cake. Maybe they would charge the companies having channels on B.Net instead or something, don’t know.

What do you know about computer piracy in denmark? In Ukraine I can be sure that starcraft will be hacked and sold for under $3 in a week after release. If it doesn't include LAN it will be hacked to do so. And it will be a big reason to buy pirated SC2 for those who don't have stable internet connection (there are still plenty of those in my country).

Did you ever hear of piratebay.org? whatever is hacked and available in ukraine is available all over the world. lol who the hell pays for hacked games nowadays?, except for you of course.
But seriously, I'd like to see you get a cracked copy of WoW and logon to Blizzard's servers and play for free :-) Good luck.

Everything gets hacked, including WoW. The only deciding factor to the scale of piracy, is weither the pirated copy gives you the same (or better in some cases) experience as buying the game.
In the case of WoW, you could download the game from piratebay then play on a free private server. The reason the vast majority dont do that, is that playing on official Blizzard servers gives you a much better experience (more players, less lag, less bugs, up to date patches etc).
SC2 will no doubt get hacked and you'll be able to play single player campaigns for free if you choose to do so. The deciding factor for alot of people who pirate games wont be the single player though, it'll be weither they can play online or not. If for the short-term, the only available option for multiplayer is through Battle.Net 2.0. it wont matter if the game is cracked on the day of release, they'll still have sales through the roof from everyone buying it simply for the valid CD-Key.
|
yeah exactly. I could imagine the hacked wow experience to be pretty tame, which is basically why it's not really cool to be on a private server with a hacked version.
I'd imagine Blizzard is trying to do the same with SC2.

I was pretty sure that no lan was confirmed months ago, but i'm too lazy to look for a quote because I am 99% sure.

So blizzard is letting us make our own BN2 server for LAN play places with out internet? I think that about half of my SC games is played behind firewalls there dont allow games to connected to the internet and thats including the LAN party my friends and me orginise 2-3 times a year(its only 40-60 people but it still count). And yes SC is the nr 1 game there but SC2 will only be that if there is LAN support.

Thats why there are pirate servers (not that i have tryed one, but from what i read its fairly commen in the parts of the world with much software piracy)

But seriously, I'd like to see you get a cracked copy of WoW and logon to Blizzard's servers and play for free :-) Good luck. 1) Insult is not a good way to start on TL. 2) Where did I say I buy pirated stuff? 3) Denmark is not Ukraine. If you have cheap (by your standards) unlimitted internet it doesn't mean everyone else has. Internet is not available in many places of Ukraine, and in many others it costs (for traffic) much more than $3 to download a DVD. 4) There are plenty of unofficial free servers of WOW in Ukraine and Russia. The quality of content is not as it is on official servers but it's good enough for thousands (each) of players to play on them.

I'd imagine you would be able to join a game room with a number of slots open for players before the game starts. Once the game is underway you will be able to choose English / Korean, or whatever language is provided for casting.
Would you really wan't that? To me it sounds like an awefull expirience. I don't wan't to join a game, i wan't to lay back on my sofa, chill out with my friends and watch some starcraft games, with cameras zooming over the crowd, close up shots from players, ceremonys and basicaly all the entertaining stuff outside of the actual game. Shit that makes your legs go jumpy in excitement.
How's your idea even good for e-sport? And why is awesome battle net 2.0 = no need for lan? And what exactly makes battle net 2.0 so awesome? If i were Ongamenet you'd hear a big "fuck that" from me. Connecting a grand finals with thousands of viewers, big ass sponsoring deals, huge sets and expensive as fuck broadcasting rights, all that connected to some network you have absolutely no control over whatsoever? Hell no. Crank that cracker up right now i would say!

Well if they decide to remove the LAN feature, they have to make b.net 2.0 incredible. Dont see that proleague will be played with 200ping. And they will need tournament tools etc.
This will be a big step to remove some piracy, because you will have those who copy to play singleplayer, and those who copy to play multiplayer. And if they can remove multiplaying for people without a cd-key. It will be incredible. Worlds first?
And LAN parties won't disapear.. Is there anyone that doesnt have internet?
So if they can make b.net 2.0 so great that it can replace lan, why not?

No LAN support? oh yeah now i really understand mbs and automine

Yes there is, my universitys firewall dont allow games to connecetd to the internet (only http proxy open) but still we borrow a room for a LANparty there, and play SC in between classes and after school if SC2 dont have LAN we cant play that.

It's that you don't necessarily need a dedicated LAN mode to be able to play games on LAN. Fun Fact: In WC3 (or DotA), there are programs like LC and DR which allow you to change Battle.Net's default input delay of 250ms down to the default lan setting of 100ms (in the case of LC) or 80 or 150 or anything else (in the case of DR). There will only be lag/drops if one of the players' latency is greater than the ms setting, and at a LAN, everyone's latency would be 0. When you are at a LAN, playing with your buddies in LAN mode is exactly the same as playing with those same buddies on Battle.Net with DR set to 100.
Although, that's coming from exp in California, going through both USWest and USEast servers, but I don't see a LAN in China going through the Asia server being much different (if at all). I know most Asian DotA players use DR between countries with little to no problems, and I imagine the servers would only be higher quality for Battle.Net 2.0.
While I find it incredibly wierd for a game like Starcraft to not have LAN support, I know that the whole 'but battle.net = lag' complaint is really a non-issue. I am a little concerned that if there is a problem though, that Blizz will be slow to address it, and piss a lot of people off.
(Kinda like the rankings on ST HD Remix... -_-*)

Im really shocked although i know this is just hypothetical and speculation, i mean blizzard is getting too greedy about money and i wouldnt be surprised if all this happens. im not even worried about the game itself since blizzard never disappointed me so far but that "making money out of everything" attitude that WoW brought into their business is just sad.. Im rather worried about their super premium bnet 2.0 where we'll have to pay 1$ per game we wanna watch and buy ums maps..I'd rather stick to bw and watch crappy vods on youtube tbh.. I dont think they'd remove the LAN support tho, that would be wrong and stupid.

no LAN just isn't happening... or is it? :S I don't want to be dependant on an internet connection to play LAN.
Heck, we have these premises close to where I live that are really, really comfy with a small kitchen, microwave, couches and stereo equipment etc etc that can be rented for less than 10 dollars a day if you know the proper people. Only downside is the place doesn't have an internet connection, so at summer we usually connect a 100m long cable from a nearby appartment (where one of the guys who has keys to the place live). At winter though, you only have LAN or use a really strong wireless internet connection (not big on leaving the cable lying around in the snow/dirt).
Not being able to play SC2 in our good ol' LAN-hangout would be very depressing :S

Jayson X. I think you misunderstod my original post or maybe it was just porly written. I dont think this way of doing things is gonna replace the current way things are being done. There will still be live events with lots of korean faces and ceremonies and all that (which is great), only diff is that the finals are played via battle.net and not LAN, which (as long as Blizzard can keep the lag to a minimum with B.Net2.0) won't make any difference for the viewers.
What I described would be an additional way of doing things, fully capable of running side by side. And believe me NO WAY in hell GOMTV would say no to extra revenue/profit, you ever heard of a company doing that? As long as x % of the online players would be willing to pay x $ for the ability to watch the game live in full HD with tasteless or whoever casting it, then it will be done. Also think about how easy it will be for the company to do this, I mean basically it can be setup to happen automatically while the game is played (see OP), cost free for the company (if Blizzard will make such a setup that is).
But really I'm still speculating, I just think the signs are pointing towards no LAN. Don't be angry with me if it does happen though.
I think the reactions in this post demonstrates why Blizzard has only stated "considering whether or not to include LAN", they won't announce it before they can show of all the new features that will replace it, in order to minimize the shitstorm or possibly even turn it into a big HALLELUJA!
