Sometimes when I have a break or finish my job for the day I play some starcraft. But after playing a couple of matches I end up mentally exhausted and can't do anything else, I need to rest.
Sometimes I need to do X thing later. For example work on a personal project, or school stuff when I was younger. After playing Starcraft on my break, I need a break from my break because I literally can't do any personal proyect or study for test etc because I'm completely mentally exhausted.
Starcraft 2 is a difficult game, but I was wondering if this was normal and other people expeience it or if for some reason I'm dedicating too much mental resources for a game and I should take it less seriously.

While I haven't played SC2 in some time, I would agree with you for RTS in general - it is exhausting to a point. I usually compare it with other games, like Counterstrike or LoL and immediately find one big problem: These games have a build-in pause, those seconds of relaxation. You don't have these in SC2, WC3 or AoE2, you are constantly in-focus, concentrating.
I can be quite talkative when playing CS or LoL with friends, but in RTS 2v2, I go rather quiet, just focusing on my own game. Maybe I'm taking RTS more seriously than other games, but I would definetly say that it has to do with the constant stress of the game. So a game of SC2 or WC3 feels often much longer than a game of LoL, even though LoL games are usually longer...but it doesn't feel like it.

yes, because it pushes your apm it is by nature stressful if you're trying to win. I much prefer mmos or rpgs to chill with.

When I play, I cannot play at a sensible 85% of mental investment, it always goes 100%. I think the last 15% actually works against me. I start stressing out, I misclick like crazy. I can't even make complete sentences when I'm playing something resembling lategame
Streamers that can talk casually while playing, are godlike. I'm looking at you Harstem.

No, 100% is when you are in the flow zone, reading your opponent and executing your plan to the best of your ability. If you are distracted by ladder anxiety or other stress, you are not playing at 100%.
Streamers who talk casually don't play at 100% either, but they have trained the ability to both talk and play without spending much mental energy. When streamers are pushed hard by their opponents, they talk less or not at all.

I think other games are a get in and get out type of thing! Other games are all team based games as well so there's a level of communication that breaks up the loneliness of playing Starcraft

Yes, for me it is also very exhausting and I can't talk at the same time haha. Sometimes I want to get a few matches in on an evening but I can only do that if my workday has been, easy. Easy as in that I haven't had too much thinking to do.

I Don t think I played a single 1v1 ladder game since working full time 2v2 or Coop with my brother has been way more relaxing Or not playing at all and watching streams instead

I used to find it stressful to play ladder in SC2, but honestly that I don't have as much time to play I find it rather relaxing. BW on the other hand, not so much.

I can find it stressful if I'm trying to improve my mmr, lvl up, or work on builds. So generally if I care about my mmr I find it stressful. Since now I'm happy with my current rating, I don't care about mmr or other stuff anymore so I just play for fun.

You need to play so much that things start becoming second nature, auto pilot if you will and you won't be using so much brain power keeping track of everything, its like a unexperienced UFC fighter tensing up all the time he will be exhausted in notime nomatter how good his endurance is, if you can keep training hard in SC2 it will become more chill after a while but you have to play consistently

Yes after a while it get less exhausting, it's in the beginning once macro is more a second nature it become easier, that may require a bit of time.
But you can see it also another way, is that StarCraft 2 as being a bit intense is quite a low time sink I feel compared to others game. After 5 games it felt like you played a lot and this can take less than a hour, whereas if you're playing one hour of LoL, or worst a hack and slash like Poe diablo or mmo, you feel like you barely played.

Brood War and SC2 are mentally exhausting. They are also worth my effort and time. SC2 continues to be an absolute blast to play 2v2s at a PC Bang with friends.

Yes. These days I can only play 2v2 and 3v3 because otherwise I am exhausted after 2 games
