If reddit is to be beileve, Rogue retirement should be announce soon, he's expected to miss the WTL playoff and as such GSL season 3 of course. He would leave the game as a 3 time world champion, 4 time GSL champion, with two tripple crown to his name and over a millions dollars in his bank acount.
He played his first sc2 match almost a decade ago to the day, a 2-1 win over Requiem

He had a real shot at G5L and a finals vs Maru would guarantee we get it, truly cursed trophy! One of the greatest if not the greatest player of all time, at least for LotV. Scariest finals player, and one of the two « top » zergs left in Korea…
I am not too upset about WTL given DPG roster, but that’s sad he only got 1 shot for the G5L
|
That would be a hard blow to me, I've grown really fond of him over the years and I'll miss him a lot. One of the best and most decorated for sure, with an uncanny ability to just win. The greatest of all time imo, even if I tend to find that notion rather meaningless now. I sure hope he can return after his military.

Wow that's sad if true. I figured he'd at least get to play GSL S3.
|
Looks like the era of Zerg dominance is about to come to at least a slowdown. Dark will only be able to avoid service for so long, once him and Rogue are gone it's more or less Serral and Reynor holding it down.
Granted they are both titans that can easily compete with top Korean players, but still, it's a big personnel loss for the top Zergs.
Good luck to Rogue, if he retired right at this moment he would still be one of the most decorated and money winning players ever, a true champion.
|
According to DPG's manager he is working hard to prepare for GSL S3. Since he got 0-2 against solar in WTL , he is forced to practice harder than before. Maybe the retirement will be at next year?
|
I think its all coming down to when they call Rogue to do the military service. If he was to join at some point later this year, then he cant make it to GSL S3.

If he can control when he'd retire, it'd have to be after Katowice next year. But I guess it all depends on when he gets the call to do his mandatory military service.

No offense but the "source" is just some random guy with no source to back up what he's saying so there is no reason to be worried

Is this person who posted this on Reddit some verified source or what? I am surprised some random guy posts something and everybody believes this right away.

this really sucks. more and more korean pros retiring. rogue is one of the best ever.

if he does actually retire, Maru's got no excuse to go and get the G5L

his military service is coming up.

3 time world champion? when did he win that?

Seems to be true after all then. I'm just wondering why he left without any comment beforehand.

I won’t be able to enjoy all the baby rage viewers who get mad when he wins more dominantly than they want?

If this is military retirement thing I get it but to retire fully? Guy is nowhere near washed up are you kiddin me? Scariest zerg in korea and outside unbeatable at finals. He's getting better and better, he's Overmind!

He's also scheduled to play in the GFUEL gladiator's cup on Aug 20th.

Wow, extremely sad to not see him and Trap in GSL S3 qualifiers. GSL victories suddenly mean a lot less. Especially Maru's G5L won't be as meaningful with half the reasons he doesn't already have it being gone.

For what its worth, Rogue seems fine to play the rest of my event this month so I imagine he can still play in WTL playoffs.

The WCS global finals were at blizzcon, yes. Rogue only won the global finals one time in 2017. 2020 was the first year we went to EPT, which Rogue has not won a global championship of.
Still, being the global champion one time is quite impressive.

Wish someone would put together a clip of all the times casters have called players like TY a world champion. Seeing people try to differentiate Blizzcon from IEM world championship when IEM is way harder anyways is always annoying.

I thought the name of the tournament 'IEM Katowice - World Championship' would already give it away so I don't understand it at all. Yes they are different world championships (belonging to different circuits), but in terms of prize pool, prestige and player pool they are basically the same so there's not really a point in differentiating.

GSL S3 is scheduled to end in October, so it seems like Trap/Rogue could only commit to events until the end of August or so?

It definetly is because of military (if he retires). But there are certain rules applied even before that, for example he can't leave the country I believe six months prior? And sure, he can return after his service, but that will be in two years. Nobody knows the state of the scene/game in two years. Maybe GSL is dead by then, so why even bother to pick it up again?
As for the discussion between IEM/World Champion: I will be honest, I think I only consider the winner of the "official" Blizzard tournament a World Champion. So every BlizzCon champion and of course every Katowice champion since 2021 (Reynor/Serral). It just feels weird to have two world championships in one year, especially considering that prior IEMs didn't have anything beforehand, they were just depending on qualifiers (so no circuit). But saying that, I can understand that people want to count them as such and I don't mind much. My question would be: Since when does it count? Is AcE a world champion for winning the IEM World Championships of 2013 in Hanover for a whopping 30K total, when the first WCS Global Finals in the same year awarded 250K? Doesn't really feel appropriate, does it? But if not every IEM Grand Finals winner is a world champion...when do we start the count? 2014 when it was the first time in Katowice, even though the prizepool didn't change compared to the year before? 2017 when IEM awarded 250K instead of 100K? Or just 2018/19/20 when there was 400K? Again, I don't want to take anything away from Rogue, but "world champion" for me is equivalent to the highest title you can win in Starcraft 2. So only giving it out once a year and only for the "official" circuit that the entire year builds up to feels much more comparable to me if that makes sense.

IEM Katowice since 2021 isn't an 'official Blizzard tournament' though, it's an ESL tournament. Either you consider just every Blizzcon a World Championship or every Blizzcon and every IEM Katowice, counting only some Katowices and others not makes zero sense. Also the argument with 'is Ace a World Champion' can also be done for Blizzcon 'are Genius and Mvp World Champions?' because they won it when it was just an Invitational with a couple players. So since when Blizzcon does count as World Championship? When do we start the count?
Also that IEM Katowice has literally World Championship in its title makes those semantics pretty irrelevant because it officially just is one.

Yes, it is an ESL tournament, but Blizzard pays the bills - and it is more than clear that the EPT is just the new WCS circuit, so same thing, different name. You can definetly make an argument that Genius and MVP don't count because it was an Invitational and not the WCS yet. I probably wouldn't count them, no.
And sorry, but the name is no indicator. If TakeTV calls the next Homestory Cup the "HSC World Championship", would you count however wins that as a World Champion aswell? The name "World Championship" for IEM was more or less a a leftover when the IEM was its own circuit. Pretty sure no one in 2012 said that MCs win of IEM VI was as important as PartinGs win of WCS at BlizzCon in the same year.
|
It's a pointless discussion, the title "world champion" isn't as meaningful in Starcraft II as it is in, say, chess. I'm sympathetic to the idea that there should only be one 'world champion' at any time, so IEM Katowice pre EPT doesn't count as a world championship even if it has world championship in its name, but any way you look at it IEM Katowice from 2017-2020 was as prestigious/difficult (if not more difficult) as Blizzcon. That's what matters.

Whether you consider Rogue a 3 time world championship winner or a 1 time world championship winner who has also won 2 other world championship equivalent tournaments which are basically the same in terms of player pool, prestige and prize money and also have 'world championship' in its name but officially aren't 'real' world championships due to arbitrary criteria doesn't make a difference.
Also I believe sOs always was unanimously called the 3-time-world champion so I wonder why we have the discussion now with Rogue.
If TakeTV calls the next Homestory Cup the "HSC World Championship", would you count however wins that as a World Champion aswell? If it would be similar in terms of player pool, prestige and prize money, than of course yes. Nobody would call their tournament world championship if it isn't similar in those criteria

Obviously it is more of a discussion "for fun". As I said, I don't want to take anything away from Rogue.I'm just a big fan of Hall of Fames and all that stuff, so it is a personal interest what exactly is considered a "World Champion".
And for your last point: Are the winners of ESWC 2011/12 world champions? Those were World Cups, even giving out more prizemoney than the first IEM WC...but with a player-field of 50% players nobody ever heard of... Again, everyone can call their tournament whatever they like. WESG could also be a contender for that in fact. So I personally prefer to just stick to the one tournament that is definetly the one with the highest prestige.

Fair enough I just think it's a bit weird / arbitrary to only call the world championships that are the result of a year-long circuit 'real' world championships. In fact I would argue the IEM qualifier format leads to a more fierce player pool because that makes sure only the most in-form players qualify and not players who were strong in the beginning of the year and then declined but still made it in on points. Also in many real sports world championships just have a normal qualifier, so it's not like that's a defining feature of a world championship.

Some get galvanised having their last shot for the foreseeable future, for others it’s too much pressure and I’d wager Trap’s wired a bit more towards the latter.
And such a shame Rogue’s race with Maru for G5L may be settled by the former’s absence and not in a tournament bracket.

I like your optimism, but I‘m not sure GSL will still be a thing when Rogue returns. I lost trust in Blizzard and I would assume, GSL’s existence relies on Blizzard‘s money atm?

When the military duty approaches, the young men forbidden and discouraged from leaving the country. Probably the reason.

Well, Rogue indeed will go to military (either already or next week), and he also said he will return after military services. He was interviewed by DPG's captain EnChant a few days ago: https://www.scboy.cc/?thread-381794.htm But it seems no one translated it yet.

i think Maru's got an excellent shot at G5Ling this season tbh. hero's his biggest threat, and hero has looked shaky in the ro6. It's also not a guarantee that hero makes it into the ro4.
For all the other players still in it, maru's a massive favorite as they are either terrans or DRG/Ragnarok.

Thanks. So I might be around again since Rogue won't retire. Rogue and Zest seemed doesn't want to give up Sc2 despite rumour saying Sc2 is dead.
Hopefully they let the fans to send some gifts or cheerful remarks before he embark into military service?
