It appears that some units, capital units mostly, will be able to fire at two units at once. If you watch the grand finale of the gameplay demo. You will notice two things..
a) The Mothership can target 2 ground targets at the same time.
b) The Terran Battlecruiser and now fire both its Anti Air laser at air units while also firing its Ground laser at ground units, each with separate attack cooldowns.
This absolutely will change some strategies, as you can increase the damage output of some units whenever there are multiple targets to fire at.
I can only wonder how this would effect units like Goliath and Wraiths. You can also notice that the Phoenix in the final battle is firing a "double shot" at the marines while it was only firing a single shot at the mutalisks early on in the demo. Perhaps its just the animation.

It makes sense with the BC, since its a capital ship with its own crew, but notsomuch for the Goliath and Wraith, since they appear to be single-piloted.

THREAD HIJACK!
With the announcement of Sc2, with all the hype and all, what do you think the new "slang" will be for the new Sc2 units?
Colossus = Cols? Cls? Immortal = Immorts? Morts? Tals? Reapers = Reaps? Pers? Rps?(Might be confusing) Stalkers = Kers? Stals? Mothership = Ship? Phoenix = Order of the?(Jk... v_v;), nixs? Warp Ray = WRs? Warps? Phase prism = Prisms? Banelings = BLings? Banes? (BLING RUSH KEKEKEKE) Nydus Worm = Worms?
Forgot some other units.. I think I got them all

Don't hijack threads like that asshole

zeenix no one likes you dont be a cock bag. as for the op, a ton is going to change about the game altogether, we can only wait to find out.

THREAD HIJACK!!11
just kidding.
No really, this is a stickup.
Alright im just rambling at this point.
I think if they feel it is right, they will divide some attacks like they did to the zealot. not really sure what your asking though.

Seems like that would greatly reduce micro effectiveness if it applied to goliaths... you wouldn't have to make the choice whether to fire at lings or muta if both are coming at you, for example... you'd be firing at both. I find this unlikely.
The mothership attacks 2 air units also when it fight the bcs. It appears from watching the battle that if there is only one unit, it can fire both attacks at the same unit for double the power. Maybe it shoots out photons (for lack of a better word) which randomly chooses a closeby target to attack.
Looking closely at the bc firing, it first looks for an air target and shoots it if in range, then looks for a ground target and does the same, all in one firing cycle. It appears to fire at one air enemy the same speed as one air enemy and one ground enemy. It looks like if it is firing at a unit, ground for example, it will not chase after an air unit, and vice versa... so only if both happen to be in range will it do this.

I thought the phoenix could only attack air, when did you see it fire at the marines.. EDIT: I must have missed it earlier, saw it now.
|
Maybe they should make it so the Hero goliaths and wraiths could fire both types of weapons due to being smarter and ordinary goliaths can't.
|
I doubt Blizzard will have the hero units in SC2 as simply powered-up versions of regular units, think more along the lines of Infested Kerrigan, WC3, etc.
(Sorry for putting the words 'SC2', 'Hero units', and 'WC3' in the same sentence)

mothership = motherf***er

mothership = OOO MADDASHIP in excited korean commentator voice, as someone said in another thread. Not really slang, but still funny as hell.

Speaking of heroes wouldn't it be cool for zerg (or any race for that matter, now that I think of it) to be able to upgrade certain units to hero-level units?
RAWR FEEL THE POWER OF MY TORRESQUES AND HUNTER-KILLERZZZZ

That's been done before. It was called Age of Mythology which was from the creators of...none other then...Age of Empires. The exansion pack of AoM contained the Atlantean Race which could turn most of its units into heroes. As I recall, the heroes weren't ... game winning powerful. But the Atlantean Race as a whole, just imba

hey, don't hate on me, I was not even extremely serious about it, it's just a random idea i threw out to try to make the game more interesting and maybe make each race even more unique ( i was thinking if protoss can have a mothership, why not let zerg have something strong and interesting also). I mean there are lots of way this can work, maybe there can be some rare third resource like, terrazine gas (that one new gas in Ghost) or something that is needed for those hero units.

Those are some stupid ass slangs...
Who the hell is going to call a Stalker a "Ker"

haha. i think we should actually use that.
also for the double shooting thingy for bc. I wonder if when you target an air unit will the ground shot still randomly shoot other units or will it stop.

Yeah, so the newbs here can derail this topic elsewhere. Theres a good reason why newcomers have a waiting period...

It would be fairly interesting and make the dual weapon units alot more usefull if they could attack both land and air at the same time with their different weapon systems.
Would become pretty messy to micro though.

erm brood war at least used to be like this it was possible to make bcs attack slightly faster through rapidly changing between targeting air and ground units
i never noticed the difference when I tried this like a couple years ago so it might be possible that a patch changed it, or that i just didn't do it correctly, but it used to be possible in earlier patches and was in fact one of the tricks reported in "zileas' phat bag of trix" or whatever it was called 9 years ago.
|
I guess blizz realized that many people would use both attacks by changing targets fast, thus they had 3 options.
-remove the ability to attack 2 things at about the same time completely. or -keep it the way it is in sc (or was, if it was changed, since iv also not played sc for years) or -make it automatically attack 2 targets.
my guess is that they made it automatic to get rid of the tedious changing targets fast and still keep the firing at 2 targets in.

Stay ontopic pretty please? Multiple Weapon systems able to target different targets at the same time is pretty cool imo.

WOW, the day has come for me to agree with iNncontrol! Blizzard, what have you done to me?!

To me it looks like both Stalker and Phoenix are also firing at both air and ground units in the same pattern Battle Cruisers are doing it. They quickly fire at two units and then wait for the weapon to cool down. Marines do not follow this pattern, even though they can fire at both ground and air. And I may be wrong, but it seems that Immortal cannot fire at air units at all.
Quite interesting if they've gone for a new approach like this. I don't particularly like that it's not only a special feature of the Battle Cruiser.
