Even for the past several months ByuL really played well, better than reflected in his results. Of course, there is some degree of luck/outside circumstances which can show in better or worse results than the performance itself, and ByuL's (alongside with TY's and KeeN's) results are below the actual skill. It is sad he gave up. Should have waited for WCS 2019 rules to see whether it could not allow him to play in more tournaments.

What were people saying in the past? "We want the very best" when we had too many Koreans in foreign tournaments. Suck it up and watch the best then.

It's not like NOW CAN THE VERY BEST PLAY OUTSIDE OF KOREA!!!! Fair rules to everyone, not discriminating Koreans would be nice since their scene is dying ATM.

Their scene is dying because Koreans don't watch SC2, it has nothing to do with region lock.

I actually care about saving the careers of top Korean pros which is why I think Blizzard should stop wasting money on the GSL which gets a fraction of the viewership of WCS Circuit events, and replace it with WCS Challenger Korea which will allow Koreans to qualify for WCS Circuit events in the same manner as international players and of course play in the open brackets. They could use the money from GSL Code S, Super Tournament, and GSL vs The World to add more WCS Circuit Events. The only reason Blizzard supports the GSL is because of it's symbolic status as a premier SC2 tournament, not because it financially makes sense to do so or because it somehow benefits the scene.

If blizzard really cared about creating a healthy long term SC2 scene rather than just symbolic victories, they would have used war chest money (which was in the millions of dollars) to create more tournaments and to increase WCS Challenger prize pools rather than wasting it on absurdly top heavy prize pools that resulted in the top few players earning hundreds of thousands of dollars while the rest earned a tiny fraction of that. It's clear to any objective observer that Blizzard is just hoping to end the SC2 competitive scene with a bang rather than doing what is necessary for long term viability which would require a much more even distribution of prize money that would allow rising talent to realistically earn a living while acquiring the tournament experience necessary to grow into a future top finisher.

Since someone is going to nitpick some individual thing that I said that was inaccurate I'm going to sum up the gist of what I'm saying which is what is important, not the individual ideas, which obviously need more work.

A viable long term SC2 competitive scene is one where a large number of pros, not just the very top ones, can earn a real living playing SC2. In 2017 the top earning player made $374,127 while the 32nd player earned $19,505. That is not what a viable long term competitive scene looks like. That is wasting money on already successful players rather than using it to grow the scene.

Dang
So sad he never got his big win, but honestly in the last few years it seems his heart wasn't into it to much.

The GSL days that are not completely terrible for NA/SA viewers have comparable viewership to WCS Circuit events. I can't speak to the other days since I only ever catch the tail end of those when I wake up at 5-5:30 a.m.

The distribution of prize money is problematic for sustaining a healthy scene and ballooning the prize pools of the WCS Global Finals (the best of the best players) and Katowice definitely didn't help.

Awesome player, and sad to see him leave. But, maybe this tweet was sent out in disappointment after failing to qualify? I mean, after a month he might feel differently?

Region locking strikes again! (Partially serious)

Good luck ByuL. Wish you all the best in life.

its not normal for a game develper to be the only sponsor for all the tournaments its how big of a fail its become a healthy game has sponsors not the game developer sponsoring everything

Yes, Byul will be "retired" until the next Korean qualifier for a tournament. I'm sure that this was a highly thought out decision after a long period of self-reflection and not just a frustrated tweet after a rough couple days at the GSL qualifiers.

This doesn't seem as much as an official retirement as a one-off tweet. Would not be surprised if ByuL tries the next GSL qualifier as well. If I'm wrong, well, maybe it was just time. What a hell of a player. Enjoyed casting his games.

People blaming foreigners in GSL, you don't really think players can live off GSL alone do you? With how top heavy Code S is theres very few players that make enough to live off premier earnings, most have other ways of surviving. Look at Keen Who plays in literaly every online cup theres is, organizado SuperNova who despite not qualifying lives off streaming.

As Wolf said (Happy Birthday btw?) - Hopefully this tweet is as knee-jerk as the posts in here about "foreigners stealing jobs" (c'mon guys really? I live in the US, we've got enough people spouting that horseshit already). If not, much respect to a great player and a storied career. GGs ByuL!
Now witness their attempts to fly from tree to tree. Notice they do not so much fly as plummet.

Can they live solely off a ro32 earnings? Probably not. Does $2814 really help that? Absolutely. How many small time online tournament wins is that? 30? 50? They'd have to pull in that much on top of what they'd be earning otherwise.

As for the financial situations of other players, unless you know all of the details of their life, it is hard to say that another player can just do the same. If Player X's family is helping support them while they try to make their dream reality but Player Y's family is not, then Player Y doesn't have the same range of options as Player X.

Well in this case it's an actual fact. Neeb got into GSL by knocking out ByuL. ByuL has said he's retiring in response. Whether Neeb being in GSL is a good or bad thing is of course up for debate. But as far as the "foreigners stealing spots/prize money" claims go, this is a blatant example.
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

I don't follow the WCS Circuit too closely outside of watching the events themselves, but have we seen anyone with achievements comparable to winning a GSL Code S or 8 top 4's retire in the last 6 months?

I like him and i will like him forever. Fighted with all of his heart. Good luck, man. I wish you the best. But also I'm a little bit angry. I refuse to see any foreigners at GSL. Personally, for me that is double standards only enforce all kinds of discrimination of korean players! I hate it! In my opinion there is no hope. And now i don't wanna follow WCS anymore, only GSL. I can't accept it anymore. I can't.

I mean yes...and no. Did Neeb take a spot that Byul would have liked? For sure. But was Byul's overall form and mindset one that would have continued much longer? I think probably not. He lost to PartinG....whose PvZ has been said to be pretty bad.

Byul has been underperforming lately, and whether or not he got into Code S probably would have only delayed the inevitable.
