Now for the fun part! You've watched the submissions be whittled down to the top 16 and now is your chance to weigh in. All of our finalists have had the chance to iterate on their maps and feedback so be sure to give them another close look.


FINALISTS


Macro Maps


A total of 38 maps were submitted to this category. For this category, judges focused on the ones that truly promoted macro play and had interesting layouts throughout the entire map.

Treachery | Youngrustler

Treachery has shown some good games in the TLMC and will continue to show great games if you decide to vote for it. The map itself is not too large where it will promote boring split maps, and effectively uses gold bases to where they are an option not a requirement.

Changelog:

  • Removed central debris
  • Increased overlord spot size outside the natural
  • General pathing improvement




16-Bit | themusic246

16-Bit is a retro red vs. blue digital landscape that has a few unique components differing from traditional macro maps. A pocket natural and destructible rocks at your forward natural allow for both aggressive and conservative play styles and ways to counter both. There are multiple attack paths and different expansion patterns. Give this a vote if you like macro maps that can play out differently every time.

Changelog:

  • Added rocks to forward natural to aid attacker against turtling and provide additional builds/strategies
  • Made several highground choke points slightly more open to help balance highground siege pushes, especially around the forward/central fourth
  • Removed potentially abusable liberator harassment spot at pocket natural
  • Removed lighting from vespene geysers to allow better visibility of vespene depletion
  • Brightened minimap/lighting slightly for better terrain and unit visibility
  • Aesthetic touch ups



Kherrisan Rift | Solstice245

Changelog:

  • Updated the lighting to be brighter than before.
  • Removed the rock tower from the 3rd (Destructible rocks remain).
  • Added Xel'Naga watch tower, to the far edge of the outer high-ground area.
  • Made numerous changes to sizes of chokes, spaces, and ramps, both to horizontal and vertical
    3rd's as well as some low-ground areas.
  • Added an additional ramp into the vertical 3rd option, from the primary path through the center.
  • Adjusted the 9/3 a'clock bases to have a larger area and ramp.



Para Site | Zweck

The biggest issue the map had was the power of siege tanks regarding one of the potential thirds and the natural base, which was fixed in the iteration phase.

The non-linear expansion pattern that makes the map unique has already proved to be balanced and able to provide nice games. So, there wasn't a real need for a lot of changes to the layout in general.

  • Made potential third base and natural less siegeable
  • Increased the size of the main a bit
  • Removed LOS blockers in front of one of the other potential thirds
  • Improved aesthetics
  • Added reaper jump to the main
  • Size of ramps on the 3 and 9 o'clock base high grounds were slightly changed
  • More minor tweaks and improvements, such as a mineral line fix and clarity of undroppable areas



Standard Maps


A total of 42 maps were submitted to this category. In this category, the judges looked for maps that were well-executed or gave us slight deviations from what we're used to.

Blueshift | NegativeZero

This map merges the overall geometry of Catalyst with the aggressive central valley of Frozen Temple, with the addition of 4 large rocks that can significantly open up the main attack lanes later in the game.

Vote for this map if you like Catalyst (you probably do, right?) and you want to keep playing it, because this is probably the closest you're going to get. Looks a hell of a lot better than that boring desert, too.

Changelog:

  • Improved main mineral formation
  • Small texture adjustments



Fracture | AVEX

Vote for Fracture if you want a standard map with a unique feel to each quadrant of its bounds. Also, all the cool kids vote for it, so I've heard.

Changelog:

  • Main ramp adjusted to be more properly wall-able for Protoss and Terran.
  • Reaper cliff mis-placement fixed.
  • No-fly zones removed, large Hive made shorter to compensate.
  • Border art added/fixed.
  • Overlord pods made more clear.
  • Vertical third is now easier for defending armies to position around.
  • Rocks added to the ramps heading to the bottom left / top right bases to help defenders.
  • Center snow pile made smaller.
  • Some areas behind mineral lines made easier to maneuver through (anti-liberator)
  • Natural mineral line rotated to horizontal.
  • Some ramps slightly changed.
  • Rocks added between the diagonal thirds to help in defense.



Cerulean Falls | Solstice245

Changelog:

  • Updated the texturing at the natural base to be more distinctive from the low-ground.
  • Updated the decoration on the overlord cliffs to not entirely conceal the actual location of the cliff.
  • Widened the central low-ground area, while slightly reducing the area on the central high-ground areas.
  • Changed the double 2x ramps on the central high-ground to a single 4x ramp with doodads
    splitting it down the middle.
  • Made the terrain more conducive to reapers in a few areas.



Artana | IronManSC

The map may be as standard as can be, but the technicality of the high ground pathways offer a nice twist to the way you can position your units both defensively and offensively. Taking control of key choke points around the map can offer unique advantages, rather than the usual straightforward map designs we've seen in the past. Plus, lush is good.

Changelog:

  • Slightly increased the size of the main bases.
  • The rocks in the natural base (to help with wall-off) were fixed.
  • Increased the proportions of the 9 and 3 o'clock bases. Most concerns centered around these bases being very chokey later in the game and giving Zerg a hard time attacking and defending.
  • Increased openness in various parts of the map, particularly around the watch towers and outside the natural bases.
  • Decreased the amount of LOSB. WinterStarcraft didn't like that you could hide a thor in them.
  • Reaper cliffs added to the mains.
  • Regarding the linear thirds on lowground, the highground plateau base nearby had its ramp pushed back 2 hexes to keep siege units from being too overpowered from attacking down into the third base. In doing this, the openness around the third base was also increased.
  • Increased the number of highground cliffs for overlords from 2 to 8.
  • Several mineral lines were re-configured to allow smoother mineral gathering.
  • Pathing was fixed in numerous places, and some doodads that were floating in the water were fixed.
  • Map bounds were increased to correct any in-game camera issues.



Lost and Found | Zweck

The only issue this map had was the lighting. It made the map look cool and unique, but also changed colors that probably should stay the same, such as the colors of health bars. There lighting was therefore changed back to normal, and the texturing was made unique in return in order to still have a fresh looking map.

The rest of the map layout was kinda flawless in the first place; therefore, no changes were necessary.

Changelog:

  • Fixed lighting, returning to very normal lighting.
  • Texturing made more unique (3 Textures were replaced).
  • The 6x6 rocks right in front of the natural were moved by 1 unit to fix a pathing issue and to open up the choke a tiny little bit.
  • Various small improvements.



Digital Frontier | NegativeZero

This is a standard map. It's got some nice colors on it too.

Changes are intended to further encourage army movement away from the center of the map, to make the 4ths easier to take, and to remove a couple annoying siege positions.

Changelog:

  • Changed central rocks to completely block the pathway, instead of leaving a narrow choke open
  • Changed outer rocks to leave a narrow choke open, instead of completely blocking the pathway
  • Added rocks blocking the main attack route to the clockwise 4ths
  • Added rocks slightly narrowing the choke to the 3rds
  • Reduced the vulnerability of the nat's outer geyser to tanks
  • Removed the vulnerability of the clockwise 3rd's outer geyser to tanks
  • Other small terrain edits
  • Improved main mineral formation



Rush Maps

19 maps were primarily submitted in this category. For Rush maps, we looked for maps that weren't just smaller scale versions of standard maps. In general, a combination of creative ideas and execution on those ideas dominated this category.

Arashi | AVEX

Vote for Arashi if you want to see what a rush map without gimmicks and a reasonable rush distance looks and plays like. Lots of eyecandy, too!

Changelog:

  • Natural mineral line changed to be anti-cannon, and to allow for walls to be made in ZvZ.
  • Many ambient noises turned off, large towers lowered, and no-fly zones removed.
  • Many of the pew-pew turrets in the middle of the map were removed.
  • Base placement circles were changed to be less ugly.



Cape Regis Shipyard | octomologyst

This is the map formerly known as Cybros Relay Station. themusic246 (creator of 16-Bit) offered this beautiful reskin and I was happy to accept. This map has plenty of aggressive potential due to it's relatively small size, but you aren't forced to play that way as the terrain at the third bases can let your defensive play speak for itself. Games here will likely not play out to super late game, so vote for this map if you like to rally units across the map or defend until you can make a decisive push.

Changelog:

  • Name changed from Cybros Relay Station
  • Reskin by themusic246
  • Increased total bounds to avoid seeing map edges
  • Moved main one tile away from horizontal bounds and one tile closer to vertical bounds to fit aesthetic better
  • Widened reaper cliff
  • Cliff between main and natural widened to fit aesthetic, although it helps reaper scouting as well
  • Moved doodad blocker at triangular third to narrow lowground choke rather than the area at the base
  • Expanded terrain behind 3/9 o'clock bases and moved the bases one tile away from vertical bounds to make liberators less abusable
  • Moved and increased the size of overlord pod by the main ramp to add usefulness
  • Added overlord pods by 12/6 o'clock bases
  • Moved NE/SW corner bases out slightly to fit aesthetic
  • Moved 6/12 o'clock bases forward to reduce liberator abuse



Dreamcatcher | Timmay

Dreamcatcher has a relatively short rush distance, but players may use the collapsible rocks to divert the main attack path. With a rare type of symmetry and a reasonable size, Dreamcatcher would be an interesting addition to ladder in the age of giant macro maps.

Changelog:

  • Four rocks were added near the center of the map. The gap between the rocks is big enough to allow large units like Archons to pass.
  • Cliff walls near the middle and by the golds were extended to create additional choke points.



New Maps


There were 25 maps submitted in this category. For New maps, we focused on ideas that we felt would truly change how the maps played. Maps were excluded for a variety of reasons, including execution, not introducing any particularly new features, and being too obviously imbalanced.

System Shock | Zweck

The airblockers got fixed, meaning air units now can not get stuck in them anymore. It is now more visible where there are air blockers.
Also a small air path between the naturals was openend up to give the watchtowers a lot more importance, so the map actually works now as intended!

Changelog:

  • Improved ease and visibility of air blockers
  • Added a small "air" path between naturals.
  • Made undroppable high ground more clear to be undroppable.
  • Added more air space behind the main.



Backpfeifengesicht | NegativeZero

The backdoor gold base poses an interesting problem: not only is it extremely vulnerable to harassment, but mining it out opens a direct attack path straight into the back of your main. Are you willing to take the risk?

Vote for this map if you think I deserve a good slap in the face for making it, just like its namesake.

Changelog:

  • Increased forward 3rds to full resource (8m2g) bases
  • Removed position at the standard 3rd where tanks could hit the outer nat geyser
  • Improved main mineral formation
  • Improved decoration, added doodads



Travincal | AVEX

Vote for Travincal if you want to see interesting LOS mechanics apply to various stages of the game, including air fights, whilst still being allowed to play your regular macro game. Also, it looks like Act 3 in Diablo II, which is pretty awesome.

Changelog:

  • Main retextured for visibility.
  • Double rocks removed outside natural.
  • Many ramps widened or altered to improve flow.
  • Non-standard ramps near triangle third fixed, can be creeped and are now unbuildable.
  • Center changed to be wider but partially blocked by 6x6, for opening in mid or later game scenarios.
  • Treasure Goblins fixed placement in main.
  • Vertical third chokes improved for the defender.
  • 12/6 oclock bases removed, area around that highground region widened.
  • Space added behind vertical fourth to deal with liberators.
  • No-fly zones removed.

At the end of the day Blizzard gets final say on which maps make it into the ladder pool but this is our chance to send a strong message! Vote for your top five and let them know what you'd like to see.

Just as last time, all the finalists have already won $100 for making it this far but we have some extra prize support from Blizzard to hand out to the top five.

First - $500
Second - $250
Third - $125
Fourth - $75
Fifth - $50


Vote!

This season, we'll be retaining the voting structure of TLMC9. As before, instead of just selecting your favorite five maps, we'll be asking you to order/rank them as well. Your favorite map will receive 5 points, your second favorite map will receive 4 points, etc... Thus, the map that has the most points, not the most votes at the end of voting will win TLMC10.

Additionally, you must comment in this thread for your vote to count. A simple "voted" will do. Of course, we encourage you to post which maps you voted for and to have a discussion about which maps you like best as well!

You have until Friday, Mar 16 6:59am GMT (GMT+00:00) to cast your votes for your favorite TLMC maps, after which the winners will be announced.

Wasn't a huge fan of the maps this time, so I really struggled with my fourth and fifth choice.

I was basically always gonna vote for the Para Site and Lost and Found, but honestly that purple stuff on Lost and Found isn't that much more appealing than the wacky lighting it had originally. Also quite liked Cerulean Falls, although it looks nothing like the Cerulean City I remember from Pokemon

After that I kinda ran out of maps I really wanted. Treachery is solid (though a bit too big), but I could really just do without dark tilesets. I would have voted for Blueshift if Catalyst wasn't on ladder right now, so instead I played meme roulette for the 5th and ended up with Dreamcatcher.

I mean TvP/TvZ , if both taking gold base, and teran opens 1-1-1 fast tanks, he just drops few mules on one mineral patch , i guess, open it in 5 min into the game, and just siege enemys mineral ;o

I like the layered base layout of a progressive main -> nat -> horizontal 3rd. Especially the terrain around the third can provide interesting tactics both for attacking as well as setting up defenses, to respectively either favor multipronged attacks, or FORCEFULLY splitting the attacking army into 2 smaller ones by Sim City etc.. Additionally, I really like the look of the whole map and it's tiles Only annoying thing I could see would be armies colliding in the middle of the map, causing a lot of clusterfuck fights on the high ground; plus the potential of drop harass being too strong because of the long walking distances from your Nat/3rd into your main forcing you to constantly keep units back at home to defend those.


2) Cerulean Falls: + Show Spoiler +
Overall pretty cool and solid standard map. I might be wrong, but it looks like despite the open area, taking the "4th" base as your 3rd (the one right above/below the main respectively) might be easier to defend, especially since the regular vertical 3rd looks like it can be shot at from the high ground. The middle of the map looks great, both for pathing as well as attacks, allowing faster units to flank the enemy army during an engagement. An issue I could see is the little unpassable area above/below the mains, if, lets say a Liberator can siege up there and shoot at the third, or at buildings near the edge of your main, without being able to be shot at by units in the main it could cause problems.


3) Arashi: + Show Spoiler +
I really like the concept of the map itself. It's a rush map that isn't a rush map by distance, as was specifically mentioned, but instead it makes most bases past your Nat really hard to defend, promoting 2-base-play, without actually making the rush distance ridicoulosly short like on BftBW or Abiogenesis for example. Would like to see more maps with concepts like this in the future.


4) System Shock: + Show Spoiler +
Honestly, I can't really explain why I like this map x) It just seems like it allows for so many shenanigans that people could come up with, which are impossible to figure out just by looking at it or studying it. You'd have to play a shit ton of games on the map and try different things, and I'm actually looking forward to all the weird strategies people come up with over time.


5) Backpfeifengesicht: + Show Spoiler +
The fact aside that the name is retarded and sounds like a 14 year old German Gangsta-Rap-Fan made it... I like the concept. The backdoor Gold expansion that opens up a new attack path when it's mined out reminds me of the old "Outsider" map in Brood War. I'm not quite sure if the map is balanced, or healthy for the game, but I'd be willing to take the risk if only for the nostalgia and to see how it plays out.

1. Para Site... is just neat! I played a couple of super fun games on it and it became my favourite!
2. Lost and Found... would have been my No.1 but I liked the original lighting better ;'(
3. Kherrisan Rift... hard to imagine for me how the changes will play out on this map
4. System Shock... provided for some great games in TLMC already and with the air block issues fixed now is a must!!!!! David Kiiiim get this map on ladder!!
5. Blue Shift... after lost and found is just a standard map that allows for standard games in my opinion

Treachery map will be great if Defenders of Man decal in the middle will be at least 50% transparent and with dust/scratches on it. Right now it looks like random splashed decal from GameHeart interface.

1. System Shock: I think the unique watch towers is a cool addition. The expansion pattern and attack paths seem like it can make interesting games mid game and onward.

2. Lost and Found: Pretty straight forward map with a unique tileset.

3. Blueshift: Tried and proven map layout (Catalyst) with a better look.

4. Para Site: The games played in Wardi's tournament made this map look pretty fun. I like the multiple attack paths and decision making on which bases to take and how to defend.

5. Travincal: Pretty map that looks like it'd be fun for late game.

That would only be possibly with editing custom data or importing custom assets. (Neither of which are allowed)

Just a quick question. I stopped playing activley mid-late hots. Now I am back into SC2 and noticed that there aren't any maps that have four spawn positions. What happened to those? I always liked them. You could scout the false positions and that gave many games a great notion.

The general and pro player bases expressed a lot of disliking for them.
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

Most people dislike them due to:

  • Scouting RNG
  • Spawn imbalances (e.g cross-Frost is very good for Zerg in ZvT whereas vertical is very good for Terran)
  • Being very restrictive from a mapmaking perspective
