OSC 2017 Team Championship

$5,000+ directly to teams supporting SC2!
Who will be team of the year?

By launching this competition, it is the intent of the OSC League to provide a medium for teams to compete with one another, in parallel with our $200,000+ Player Championship. This Team Championship will use player performance in existent OSC Partnered events to provide additional incentives to players, teams, events and sponsors, as well as creating a more involved storyline for the viewer/fans.

Now, as a player progresses through an OSC partnered tournament for personal financial gain, improved position in the World Rankings, and the chance at qualifying for the Player Championship at the end of the year, they also accumulate points for their organisation in the Team Rankings!

The design of this team championship is quite different from traditional team league models, which tend to focus on bo1's, or all kill (ace player) formats, often restricting outcomes to one map, on one day, at one point within the year, or requiring a determined/minimal number of players to compete. While these models definitely have a place within the ecosystem, and can be a fun for fans to follow, and players to participate in, it could be argued such formats may prevent individual progression, breaking away from the deeply individualist and elitist 1v1 nature of the sport.

Our model removes many of these limitations, allowing players (and by proxy, teams) to compete in 100's of tournaments, and potentially 1000's of bo3+ series across the year, making every game potentially important, yet no one bo1 or bo3 series, or individual player the determining factor to victory. Thus the creation of ongoing storylines for players and teams carry on between tournaments for viewers, resulting in potential for daily/weekly/monthly updates, providing ongoing exposure for team and player, while tying into the 1v1 competitive tournament foundation and individual drive the sport is built around. We hope this approach is effect in finding the right balance between individual and team, adds value to high performing and hard working players within the competition, and encourages teams to consider expanding their sc2 support/programs.

$5000 USD starting Prizepool:

*1st $2000
*2nd $1250
*3rd $1000
*4th $500
*5th $250

Highest Ranked Clan $100

**
Team of the year will be given an engraved OSC Team Championship Trophy!

*There is a $25 entry/admin fee to be eligible to win Placement $ Prizes. This can be submitted by anyone within the team/clan. In the event a team places 1-5th, but hasn’t elected to provide an entry fee, that section of the prizepool will go to the next highest eligible team who has.

Highest Ranked Clan, and the Championship Trophy have no entry/admin fee condition, and can be claimed by any clan/team.

**These are starting prize pools, which may increase!

All prizepool payments will be done through Matcherino.

We have some great donation goal rewards planned (To be added soon), which should act to encourage contributions, and provide entertainment to those who help support this project and goal of helping teams supporting SC2!

If you have suggestions for donation goals/rewards, feel free to share!

2nd $1500
3rd $1250
4th $700
5th $400
6th $150

Highest Ranked Clan $100

When will it run?

The Team Championship will run for 8-8.5 months, from April 1st 2017-the end of the OSC season (~mid dec).

Teams have until June 30th to submit their $25 entry/admin fee and be eligible for placement prizes.

Who can join?
  • Open to any ‘pro team’ or ‘casual clan’ from any region!

  • There are $ Prizes to win with free entry, but to be eligible for placement $’s, teams will need to contribute a $25 entry/admin fee.

  • Players can only play for one team/clan at a time.

  • Teams/clans can register as many players as they like. Teams, Clans and Players should notify/contact SC2Online or OSC Managment of any roster changes/additions if they want those results added.

  • No mercenary teams of teamless players or partnerships between teams/clans allowed. We hope this Championship increases player value value within the market, and will see teams consider picking up and supporting active tournament competitors or expanding academy squads.

  • As such, Academies, Extended Squads, and Community Divisions or other similar programs, will all be counted as part of one unified team for rankings purposes.

When registering:

  • Teams/Clans should nominate one manager and one player/captain, and provide contact details for both. These two will be the points of contact for team updates, roster changes, database updates, and prizepool payouts.

  • Teams/Clans should list all playing members within the organisation. Competitive players, managers, academy players, production staff - if they're not on another team, and you may as well try and get points from them!

REGISTER HERE.

GLHF, and may the best team win!

Player leaving/joining new teams?

Players leaving teams/clans and joining others is a common occurrence within the sport.

To ensure results stay with teams who have been supporting players, and prevent a late season rush/bidding war of top players, previous months results will stay with the team/clan.

If a player leaves between the 1st + 15th of the month, the team/clan they are leaving won’t gain any points from them for that month. If they leave between the 16th-31st, the team can claim the remainder of the month's results, and if the player joins a new team, results can be counted from the beginning of the following month, or at any point within a following month.

We hope this Team Championship adds more value to players who achieve consistent online results, and are active within the League.

Team + Clan Definitions?

For the purpose of this Championship, we will define a team as an established esports organisation (either multi division or sc2 specific), which has sponsors, and supports players with salary, $ incentives, travel support, or uniforms/gear. Players on the squad can range from professional, semi-pro to ameteur.

For the purpose of this Championship, we will define a clan as a social group, made of of players of various skill levels, who lack sponsor support, and do not offer salary,$ incentives, travel support, or uniforms/gear to anyone within the clan. The clan cannot be attached to a team in any capacity.

It is possible big clans can compete against established Pro Teams given how the rankings are designed, however it would require a lot of activity and results, while competing against Professionals. Thus the Highest Ranked Clan Prize is aimed to support and incentivise these casual players, as one clan is guaranteed to walk away with $100! Perhaps with enough activity and practice, these players will improve/or collectively the clan can attract sponsorship and take that step up towards becoming a competitive team.

Why is OSC running a team league?

We have had several teams approach us requesting direct sponsorship of their organisations since launching our player sponsorship program OSC-ROOT in July 2016. However, while we may add to the current squad, we aren't in the market to take on another/multiple existing established teams at this time. We are pleased that the squad can not only sufficiently represent us within the league, but in other markets/LAN as well. As much as we’d love to sponsor every team, our priority is to run tournaments and competitions for players and teams to compete in, as ultimately if there’s no tournaments, there’ll be no teams.

With that said, what we will do in 2017, is run an OSC Team Championship, aimed to reward and assist organizations supporting SC2 players. Money back into teams pockets! The organisations may spend the winnings however they like, travel, payments, promotional costs, etc, but given it will be won by SC2 players, we would hope it’s put back into supporting them.

We have worked closely with many teams over the last few years, providing updates of player + tournament data, which we hope are being used utilized towards supporting players and attracting/pleasing sponsors. Over the last few seasons, we are happy to see OSC League results and participation being an influential factor in many player salaries and $ incentives within our home regions (due it's ongoing nature and size - $250.000+ and 300+ tournaments in 2016). This new Team Ranking Competition will be another extension of that, and add value to players competing!

We considered directly supporting teams with small contributions, but this Team Championship alternative should spur competition, and be an enjoyable narrative (and marketable for teams) throughout the year! More reasons to play OSC!

We would like to thank Zvonimir Krunes for pitching us the idea of a Team Championship, developing a lot of the language involved, and being a great sounding board throughout the creative process.

What is OSC?

The Oseanic StarCraft 2 Championship (OSC) is an non-profit online sports league, that supports and showcases the best talent from the Oceanic, South East Asian, North American, Latin American and Chinese regions! While these are our home regions, many events are open globally, so we have a great mix of the best players from all around the world regularly competing in events, and forming our World Rankings!

The League is a conglomeration of numerous partnered tournaments, investors and community members who have united to share their time, skills, resources, data and assets, to create a rapidly growing ongoing event for players to compete in on a daily basis! OSC is run by the community for the community! In 2016 we combined for a $250,000+ season!

The league follows a yearly season format, where players earn points for placing highly in all partnered tournaments, along with points acquired through bonuses and challenge matches. These points and player data act to form the OSC World Rankings and seeding system.

At the end of the yearly season, the top 50 players ranked via the OSC World Rankings are invited to play in the revered OSC Finals, where we determine our yearly champion! Every player who plays in the finals gets paid!

We have designed a finals format which rewards the players who finish highly in the World Rankings, as they have shown a combination of results and regular participation throughout the year, and deserve rewards for their efforts. Thus seeding and competition for position within the rankings is highly important, and ensures ongoing player activity and interest!

ByuN was 2016's Champion, taking out the $10,000 finals series.
Solar was 2015's Champion, taking out the $5000 finals series.
GuMiho was 2014's Champion, taking out the $3500 finals series.
PiG was 2013's Champion, taking out the $2100 finals series.

Factors which influence how many OSC points tournaments are allocated include: prizepool, format, frequency, open qualifiers and region locking.

OSC Supporter Packages

The OSC League is run by the community, for the community, and we believe together can accomplish great things! However, to keep growing we need to create a sustainable ecosystem that doesn’t rely as heavily on a few. So the team are looking for support from any of our friends in the Starcraft community who might want to aid us in achieving our goals and growing the sport.

You can show your support, and help us put on events and competitions for the community for just $5 USD per month! One less chocolate bar/one less beer at the pub/a couple less songs on iTunes, etc, and the money goes towards supporting the scene!

The OSC League does not operate a twitch channel of our own – we value sharing tournament casting opportunities with a mix of up and coming, community, and established casters. As such we do not have a twitch subscriber platform, or a means to gain support from tournaments streamed.

We will provide supporters with bonuses such as event replay packs, and chance to win 1 hour of coaching from top tier players.

Sounds awesome! I can't wait to see all the action

By the way, what's the $200,000+ Players Championship? Is that what OSC has running throughout the year, players accumulating points, ultimately culminating into an epic grand finals?

This isn't an actual tournament, right? Sounds like an ongoing thing in the background

I think it would've been better if it was something more active, like teams match up each month and whichever team gets more points win that month

I wish there was like a small bonus point % so really small teams, 1 person teams( me :'( ) get a bit of help.

For example, something like teams with +15players +0%bonus, 8-14players +5% bonus, 4-7 +10% bonus, 1-3 +20%bonus.

Something to make it a bit fair, instead of "get all player we can and make them play", since regular teamleagues have player limit, here we can have bonuses (?

So there's actually no team v team games then? Sounds like it's all coming from the "partnered" events.

Weird idea. Basically teams with the most players have the best chance of doing well (especially because of a low number of points difference between high positions. Someone can be ranked first in the World rankings and earn their team 8 points, but if a team has two players in top 75 they also get 8?

Feels like a pretty bad balance. Cham is currently first and has won $1800 in OSC events, from 10 tourney wins and 37 events played. This has the same value has having two players e.g. SYF Gaming have Crimson and HuT at rank 74 and 68, with 14 tournaments played between them and $15 won. That doesn't add up to me ~~

Also because it's the same ranking used to award points at the end of each month, performing well at the start of the year is going to have way more benefits to performing well later in the year. It would make sense if it was based on per month points, but as far as I can read it isn't?

Maybe I'm looking at this from the wrong front ^^ I mean the idea is to "reward and assist organizations supporting SC2 players. Money back into teams pockets!", but is it really going to cause more teams to pick-up more players? Are the rewards lucrative enough? Feels more like teams who already have players who can play in a lot of OSC events are just going to be able to pick up more bonuses.

I love OSC, but will have to linger with my thoughts on this event for a while because I feel it could have been executed way better. Could have run multiple team based show-matches (for teams who have multiple highly ranked OSC players or something) which maybe award OSC points to players per win? This supports teams, helps players in the OSC standings and makes teams want to have players in there while also creating more content for OSC to broadcast which brings more attention to the organisation, the OSC League and so on (which way too few people already know about.)

That's just one fast idea, I feel like you could come up with many more that would achieve the same goals in a more logical way and with less potential flaws that come up in the current system.

Don't want my post to come off too negative, I think it's great that this has been announced and will be a thing, I just feel like it's something that could be much more interesting and a bigger deal than something that just runs in the background.

Edit : Even just a playoff at the end of the season, where highest ranked teams get seeded into like semi-finals or something (think proleague / ssl "gauntlet style" playoffs where the round robin ranking effects where you start in playoffs), this would already be better because then you have to be a strong osc team to qualify, but it also creates content and it should offset the "biggest" teams from being the only ones to take home $.

It is one long tournament/championship, ongoing, somewhat running in the background, however relevant (and a benefit to) every Partnered Tournament (300+), and team, with daily updates available.

A good analogy by one of the key contributors to the Championships creation was:

The team and player championships will be akin to the relationship between driver and constructor championships in Formula 1. So while a player progresses through an OSC partnered tournament for personal financial gain and the chance at the player championship at the end of the year, they also accumulate points for their organisation.

The Team Champion runs through 2017 OSC Partnered Tournaments, the majority of which, as tournaments, have casters already covering them Viewership directly related around this Team Championship is not a goal. If viewership increases for partnered events as a by-product, that's fantastic.

Many opportunities to play! But we will always try to bring more

Small teams/personal sponsorships are unfortunately not what the Championship was designed for. If that dynamic works well for the player + sponsor/team that's great.

However, one of the reasons we're running this, is to encourage expanding SC2 squads, whether that be picking up a couple of pro/semi pro players, or academy/community pathways. Adding value to these players, and helping teams learn how to market those results and data. The Team Championship by itself probably isn't going to be that difference, but tied in with the OSC World Rankings + League it might!

So there's actually no team v team games then? Sounds like it's all coming from the "partnered" events.

Correct. It doesn't make much sense for us to run a traditional style team league, with team v team bo1 elimination format, which would be shorter duration, limit participation, and take players/teams time away from competing in tournaments. Additionally and a key factor, if it were separate, teams/clans wouldn't have access to cross promotional data/results from OSC League + ongoing rankings. It would just be another, smaller event.

No plans for a finals/playoffs conclusion at this stage. It is something we could consider/alter, as we assess feedback, discuss internally and work with teams/community on (As well as any ideas that come post announcement.)

Basically teams with the most players have the best chance of doing well (especially because of a low number of points difference between high positions.

Yes and no. As mentioned it's not a model for small teams/personal sponsorships. So any teamless, or individuals aren't going to be counted or rank highly while remaining as such.

One of the reasons we're running this, is to encourage expanding SC2 squads (as well as supporting those already doing so), and helping teams utilize associated data to their benefit. While there might not be a dramatic shift, if even a few more players are supported, or more players are offered pathways onto/supported by teams, then that's a win!

Participation and points distribution also plays a part, trying to find the right mix between top players, active players, and total players supported.

Having a few top ranked players, compared with a larger squad with a mix of ranked players, or a very large and active clan, ideally would add up to close or at least competitive Team Ranking.

Some clans have huge numbers of players! Encouraging them to partake more in events is a key goal. Hopefully reasons such as collective exposure, $ prize, ranked alongside/competing with bigger orgs, or developing tools for marketing/sponsorship might incentivize them to do so. Or just play for fun/pride!

On April 05 2017 05:54 Wardi wrote:Also because it's the same ranking used to award points at the end of each month, performing well at the start of the year is going to have way more benefits to performing well later in the year. It would make sense if it was based on per month points, but as far as I can read it isn't?

As the Team Rankings are based off the OSC World Rankings, which requires results or high activity (if not a combination of both) to improve or hold onto ones ranking, we should see the rankings change a lot over the next 8.5 months. There are plenty of ways and opportunities to catch up/increase ones rank.

Additions to teams/players changing teams is also a realistic opportunity to change Team Ranking values, but the earlier this is done, potentially the greater value/reward yes. We are also hoping to expand both the perceived and market value of the rankings from what many might consider top 50 (Championship qualification/top %), to top 100 or 200 players.

Ideally this Championship would have started at the beginning of the OSC season. It's not something that's been put together overnight, 4+ months of discussion, ideas, and consulting with numerous SC2 people, have lead to the product we have now, and it's timing of commencement. (Initially there was less clan and semi pro incentive, more focused on featuring players on salaries or incentives - More measurable support. Changes in goals and a lot of adjustments post that.) A 2018 Team Championship edition would start at the beginning of the season.

On April 05 2017 05:54 Wardi wrote:Feels more like teams who already have players who can play in a lot of OSC events are just going to be able to pick up more bonuses.

Some teams may start at a small advantage or perceived advantage, such those who already utilize and incentivize their players to participate in the league (of which there are several). But at the same time they've earned what they've achieved already, and everyone has had access to do the same.

The rewards and opportunities for teams and players participation in OSC events should be nothing new to top players and teams. And yes, this could be viewed as just another incentive, albeit one focused on teams compared to players. If it further encourages players and supports teams, while adding to interest around rankings and tournament participation, that is a good outcome. If not, at least it rewards those who already do so

On April 05 2017 05:54 Wardi wrote:Could have run multiple team based show-matches (for teams who have multiple highly ranked OSC players or something) which maybe award OSC points to players per win? This supports teams, helps players in the OSC standings and makes teams want to have players in there while also creating more content for OSC to broadcast which brings more attention to the organisation, the OSC League and so on (which way too few people already know about.)

OSC Points can only be given out through $ Tournaments, or in challenge matches between players using their own points won from said tournaments. Challenge matches are also voluntary and a risk! Awarding outside of these things would be tricky to incorporate. We also don't broadcast anything 'ourselves' (No dedicated/offical OSC twitch channel), we support established and community streams. OSC could certainly do with more exposure to the larger casual fan base, but our core role is running tournaments, supporting those who do, encouraging people to play in them, or enabling people to broadcast them. As such this Championship is more catered towards Teams + Players over viewership/exposure.

On April 05 2017 05:54 Wardi wrote:Even just a playoff at the end of the season, where highest ranked teams get seeded into like semi-finals or something (think proleague / ssl "gauntlet style" playoffs where the round robin ranking effects where you start in playoffs), this would already be better because then you have to be a strong osc team to qualify, but it also creates content and it should offset the "biggest" teams from being the only ones to take home $.

A finals is something we could consider. I guess the League/Player Championship format leads into a end of year finals. It is something we could consider/alter, as we assess feedback, discuss internally and work with teams/community on (As well as any ideas that come post announcement.)

From July Teams will be able to challenge other teams to showmatches, betting some of their points!

Which teams are willing to back themselves/risk/gamble for greater glory and the chance at more $'s and better finals seeding!?!?
(We expect these are more likely to occur later in the season.)

Teams can only bet 25% of their season total per challenge match. The Challenge Match total will be determined by the lower ranked of the two teams, eg one team with 100 points, the other with 80, it's a max of 25% of 80 (20 each)

To encourage Challenge Matches a bonus 10% of the lower ranked teams season total (eg 8) will be awarded to the winner! +28 in this example, -20 to rival team

Should a team not show up to/forfeit an approved Challenge Match, they will be penalized 30% of their monthly points total.

Matches must be approved by OSC Management.

Challenge Format + Finals/Playoff Format:

2 Stages, played live + back to back. Predicted time of 2-3 hours.

Set 1 - 1 Point

Set 4 - 1.5 Point (If needed)

Possible Scores (3-0, 3.5-1, 2.5-2)

-
Total Min 8 Bo1's, Max 13.
