Red Bull Washington:
Archon Edition

by qxc

In terms of interest for the new features coming with Legacy of the Void, Archon Mode has taken a distant third place behind significant balance/design overhauls and the core single player story -- itself a conclusion of sorts -- set to tie together the Starcraft story. Out of all the features and changes set to redefine Starcraft II, Archon Mode has been viewed with some skepticism - on one hand, it's very fun to play. On the other, there is some doubt as to whether or not the format is legitimate and appropriate for a competitive setting. Not a question to be answered right now, to be sure, but this weekend's conclusion to a long-running premier Archon Mode tournament might give us some hints.

Red Bull Archon Mode LoTV Tournament showcases many old faces, including some of the most successful players of all time, in constellations bringing together players both of very similar styles, and champions of widely different styles. How would Bomber's top-of-the-line macro fare if he possessed MMA's micro and game control skills? In Archon Mode, this is a question easily answered.

While many of the qualified players have not seen incredible success of late, LoTV’s vast changes may be a means for rebirth once more as a champion.

---

An explanation of stats:

Micro - Overall control
Macro - Overall macro
Adaptability - Ability to effectively change strategies and decisions on the fly
Legacy - History of performing well at events
Abuse - How effective these players are at revealing things to be patched.
Multi-tasking - Effectiveness of multi-tasking.

The x-factor - Why some of this might be totally wrong
Style - Aggressive/Defensive/Reactionary etc...

HuK & MC

Nickname: MC-HuK’s Paindom

Both of these players have been around for as long as Starcraft 2 has been played competitively and both have won major titles at their peaks (and, in the case of the Boss Toss, not only at his peak). Although MC retired recently after a string of poor results and HuK largely stepped back from playing to pursue the caster life this year, both have already surged back to strength in LoTV. Apparently, the time off was good for both players, as they dominated Santa Monica with deadly timings and an eased familiarity of LoTV’s many changes. This coming weekend may be the spark needed to reignite both players’ careers as players once more.

Style - Aggressive & Timing oriented.

Stats:
Micro - 10
Macro - 8
Adaptability - 7
Legacy - 10
Abuse - 10
Multi-tasking - 8

You couldn't find a team more aligned in play style unless you took MC and paired him with a clone of himself. Both are renowned for aggressive timing-oriented styles that punish players for making the slightest of mistakes. With laser precision they are able to leverage brief windows of strength into game ending attacks. With a game as rapidly changing as LoTV, few players can be prepared for the various bludgeons they conjure seemingly from nothing. While I would like to analyze each player’s strengths individually, this archon is one of the purest in that there is no obvious line where HuK ends and MC begins. They regularly take turns trading micro and macro depending on who has a build order in mind. Regardless of who does what, expect a balance patch to follow in their wake. While excellent at finding powerful new timings, we did see a few moments of weakness in the previous stage when their early aggression was not effective, and again when they were caught being too predictable by Crank & Alicia.

Dark templar punish HuKMC’s predictable build choice.

The x-factor - While this duo showed incredible play at Santa Monica, it was also during one of the shortest lived patches before major changes were made. With the latest patch killing some of their best strategies, will they adapt or be left behind?

Zealots did 30 (now 8) damage with charge at the previous event.

Bomber & MMA

Nickname: BOMMA.

We don’t really know anything about Bomber or MMA in LoTV, especially not in archon mode. No one really knows how long or how hard they’ve been practicing LoTV. Fortunately for them, the latest patch reset a lot of timings and will allow them to catch up in skill relatively quickly, since much of the practice pre-patch has been lost. Neither player has participated in any archon mode tournaments so their experience in that regard is limited. While both players are champions, no team here has shown as few games in this format as these two.

#JustBomberThings

Bomber stands out as a more macro and timing based player who often takes significant risks to huge advantage. When Bomber wins, he crushes his opponent with ease and when he loses, the reverse is often true. Bomber is well known for his stubbornness in choosing unorthodox builds, sometimes to the point of almost defeating himself. Years after marine tank had all but vanished from TvZ, Bomber would continue using that style [E/N: in Bomber's defense, it must be said that his liking for old builds played a part in his 2013 victory over Jaedong in WCS S2]. Although he has a tendency to choose strange builds, he never seems to run out of new strategies to punish unsuspecting players. MMA, on the other hand, has been the epitome of Terran whenever he is playing well. He is adept at denying scouting, skilled in setting up multi pronged attacks and well-versed in maintained aggression, apt at keeping the pressure on until his opponent’s bones crumble. This archon feels like a slight clashing of styles, as Bomber is generally more timing based and MMA favors more multi-tasking and harass builds. That said, they have incredible potential to showcase a large variety of styles and strategies due to the difference in the players’ styles.

...and it doesn’t go so well.

x-factor: Bomber & MMA are incredible Starcraft 2 players and may require very little practice to be equal to the other teams at the event. Will they be able to make up for their lack of experience in LoTV & Archon mode and come out on top?

DRG & True

Nickname: True-RaeGu.

DRG is another fading household name in Starcraft. His days of greatest glory were some years ago, and the last few years have not treated him as kindly. That said, he was nearly unstoppable in his prime and has made a point of showing that even though his championship-winning days are past, he remains a force to be reckoned with. If DRG can reclaim his former strength (or even simply maintain the strength he has shown in Proleague), this tournament could be his first step back onto a champion’s path. True, on the other hand, has shown higher level games in more recent history, but never found the same peak as DRG. While True has no championships under his belt, he has been appearing and placing highly in almost every major tournament in recent history, including a 2nd place and 3rd/4th place finish at two separate Dreamhacks. Hungry as ever, combined with their solid performance at Santa Monica, these two look primed to be early champions of LoTV.

DRG & True had no trouble defending a strong liberator timing.

Style - Reactionary

Stats:
Micro - 9
Macro - 10
Adaptability - 8
Legacy - 9
Abuse - 4
Multi-Tasking - 10

Description: DRG & True play a relatively conservative style that leaves little opportunity for timing attacks. They tend to favor a consistent build order that errs on the side of caution while relying on their superior multi tasking and decision making in later stages to eke out wins where lesser players couldn't. They are incredibly persistent in scouting to tailor their transitions appropriately. Runby attacks are hallmarks of both players, able to punish opponents who lack sufficient map awareness. If enough damage is done, these attacks can act as great setups for a barrage of follow-up timing attacks. While their openings may be conservative, around the 8 minute mark, their play seems to coalesce into something much sharper. Neither player is stranger to cutting drones or upgrades off near-invisible signals only they can pick up. With their dual killer instinct, expect this duo to be able to convert even a slight early lead into a devastating attack.

x-factor: Of all the archon teams we’ve seen so far, DRG & True were the most well rounded. They understood each matchup well and did not rely on gimmicks or surprises to dominate. That said, they barely poked the boundaries of what’s possible in LoTV, while others -- like HuK & MC -- crashed through those same boundaries..

Violet & Masa

Nickname: The Infested

Violet’s string of dominance, like many other players at this event, concluded some time ago. Unfortunately for him, his recent success in WCS may be one of the deciding factors in his performance at this event. As he was committed to HoTS until only a short time ago, his total practice time for LoTV is probably substantially lower than many of the other competitors. Masa, on the other hand, was knocked out of WCS a bit earlier and so has had much more time to get up to date with the current patch. This is also the only team that contains players of different races.

+ Show Spoiler +

Violet hits one of his characteristic timings

Style - Multi-tasking & timings.

Stats:
Micro - 9
Macro - 9
Adaptability - 9
Legacy - 7
Abuse - 7
Multi-Tasking - 8

Violet has long laddered on his off race in HoTS. One of the most interesting decisions for this team is whether they will choose to play Terran or Zerg, and what race they will pick based on who they’re playing against. Provided they do not stick to one race, this will lend them a level of unpredictability capable of upsetting their matches. Both Violet & Masa play a timing and harass based style. Violet has long been known for roach timings and general roach/hydra play, while Masa has favored heavy multi-tasking and drop play. Both players have shown a great deal of flexibility in choosing builds most appropriate for their situation accurately and consistently.

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Masa doom dropping - hardly rare, but effective

x-factor: If both players have have had enough time to prepare for this event they have a good chance of doing well. LoTV is the great equalizer in many ways, as a great deal of skill is lost when so many parts of the game change so drastically at once. That said, there’s been so little time since Violet’s finish in WCS that he may not be able to get fully up to speed or ahead of the meta in time for the event.

Predictions: Initial Matches

DRG & True 3-2. Violet & Masa:
I expect Violet & Masa to pull off innovative builds as well as try to counter DRG & True’s reliable, fairly predictable style. While this will work for a game or two, in the end DRG & True’s superior knowledge of LoTV and teamwork will pull them through to the next round.

+ Show Spoiler +

Being just a little out of position quickly leads to heavy losses.

Adepts utilize the warp prism dodge substantial damage.

Huk & MC 3-1 Bomber & MMA:
HuKMC have too much experience and momentum coming into this event. Expect several unique and powerful builds to take BOMMA off guard in decisive fashion.

Apart from that it was a very enjoyable read, cool idea with stats and points.

Considering that one of the immediate following sentences read as follows:

(or even simply maintain the strength he has shown in Proleague)

I would hazard that the author agrees

It still feels a bit of a slap in the face to hold a tournament like this with the knowledge of the active professional circuit

Shame as I would go considering I live in D.C.

It will be interesting to see the newest patch being played out, I feel like the game is getting more similar to HotS (especially Terran). MMA and Bomber will benefit from that.

The easiest way is probably to use a service like Gfycat to host the gifs, and then embedding them on TL (assuming TL supports javascript and iframes).

Hey guys, here's a quick recap of the final day at RBBG Santa Monica. I hope to edit it a bit before I go to bed tonight, but wanted to get it up here while we're still on the first page:

The Red Bull elimination format is treacherous, punishing, and at times brutal to those who play it. But, as a spectator I can't help but say it is sure as hell entertaining.

Dawn of the third day in Santa Monica saw four teams remaining. The last two bastions of protoss, 3 lives remaining for HuK and MC, 2 for the Axiom duo of Crank and Alicia, the lone seemingly indestructible zerg team of True and DRG, and the last terran standing, QXC and Beastyqt.

But, as a grim omen of things to come, Alicia and Crank's shields were down, thus unlike the rest of the remaining teams who maintained their shield, they could not deflect being chosen and as such were the obvious target.

HuK and MC swung first, but the axiom pair deftly outmanoeuvred them on orbital shipyard, and while the formerly oGs-TL brotoss archon struck back in game two, dark Templar of Crank-Alicia in game three sent a clear statement that they weren't going anywhere without a fight.

A fight they would have however as QXC and BeastyQT, who had taken the first life from the Axiom protoss on day 2, took to the stage and once more challenged them. Like their first match Axiom struck first upon Terraform, and while BeastyQXC seemed up to something with their cyclone play, charge lots smashed through quickly and decimated their base before the viewer could see what exactly it was.

Game two began like any other, for the first 58 seconds, until the second extractor began construction in the terran base. To those just tuning into the screen this lazy Sunday afternoon this may have gone unnoticed until gretorp declared "okay, we have a misclick, because there are ghosts". Quickly the camera's panned to the players. "Proxy, probably voidrays" states QXC. "I think we just do this anyway: should be able to defend."

And so it was that two ghosts set off toward the Protoss base as ghost cloak was researched. As the emp hit the unsuspecting probes and the ghosts began their assault it was a slaughter. Meanwhile the Protoss players were striking back with all their might as a voidray high in the air rained it's charge down on the terran wall off, supported by adepts below. But here too the cloaked ghosts deftly defended the attack. Desperately the Protoss sent an oracle to detect the ghosts and to work on the mineral lines, but no sooner had it arrived in the Terran main that the EMP landed, depleting it of shields and energy and sealing the fate of the Protoss.

With new a new resolve each team began game three. But where game one showed the defensive power of the ghosts, game two was clearly what BeastyQXC had in mind. First an extremely conspicuous SCV going past the Protoss base to proxy positions drew attention and scouting away from the Terran main as two ghosts crossed the map, their cloaking research 50% complete.

As they hit the main there were a few tense seconds before cloak research completed and the first observer exited the robo facility. Then, for just a moment, starcraft became a MOBA. Cloak finishes, the ghosts cloak, the Protoss units continue firing, scan goes down, the observer gets target fired, and suddenly the Protoss is blind as probe after probe falls. Desperately they start the next observer. They have no chrono, and yet they must speed time. Finally, after probe after probe has fallen, the observer exits. Too late: scanned again and it goes down. Minutes later, a battered and bewildered Protoss archon types GG as the energy for photon overcharge is EMPed away from the mothership core.

In the post-game interview QXC thanked Supernova for the build, and TT1 and Kiwikaki for sending them the gods of it as practicing with them.

After a short break Alicia and Crank returned to the stage. On their last legs they demanded one more shot at revenge against their bane this tournament, but BeastyQXC would not give them the opportunity. They stated they were out of coins to flip, and instead used their deflection to feed the Axiom players to the gaping maw of the undefeated Zerg team of True and DRG. One couldn't help but appreciate the poetic justice for Bails and Puck, who were ousted from the tournament after having the True Dong deflected on to them by Alicia and Crank in the final series of the evening on day 2.

That series the before showed that Protoss could at least take a game off of True/DRG, if not a series, and so it was that after a gruelling macro game on Terraform tempests reigned supreme. In the two games following the Protoss players continued to favor the skies, but DRG's team followed in the footsteps walked by Mondragon so many years ago and by so many zergs thereafter, and roached the Protoss to death, especially using the burrow movement to surge forward and render forcefields useless. So it was that the Korean Protoss team fell.

Now the Zerg team had tasted blood and wanted more. They challenged HuK and MC, but having seen the gruesome fate that had befallen Axiom's toss, they deflected to BeastyQXC but not without a few snide words about how they'd probably beat DRG/True when they pick them next anyway.

The play of BeastyQXC Archon had been the talk of the tournament all weekend long, with their multi pronged tank drops defeating the many terran who they had faced, and their innovative tactics (or cheese) winning the day against Alicia and Crank. Only HuK/MC had taken a best of three off them. Yet, the will of the true dong was unbreakable. While QXC and BeastyQT fought valiantly, they could not take a map off of the rock solid True Dong: a loss of three reapers to zerglings halted their offence in game one, and soon the mutas rained terror down upon their economy. In game two, while BeastyQXC were able to hold on to three bases with their liberators and siege tanks during the relentless pushes of the roach/ravager army of True and DRG, once they pushed out a final battalion of burrowed roached snuck in and forced checkmate atop the ruins of the Terran production facilities.

"Talk shit, get hit"

Those were the words of HuK, as he called out DRG. His team hungered for another $415 he claimed, and cited many ladder games of him and MC rushing DRG and True, who game after game this weekend has opened double expand.

As the game on Bridgehead began it seemed words of HuK had not fallen upon deaf ears as for the first time this tournament DRG and True opted for a two base build on bridgehead. After an 8 ling drop only killed 3 probes, roaches were once again the weapon of choice for True/DRG, this time sent via Nydus. After first nydus was quickly answered by forcefields and photon overcharge, burrow and roach burrow-move entered the production tab. From there, the game got scrappy.

Roach after roach flowed into the Protoss base after a brilliant two pronged nydus attack, with one worm outside of the rocks by the natural, one worm inside the main. Soon all that remained of the Protoss forces to defend were two immortals, a warp prism, and an observer. Yet the power of archon mode shone through, as the warp prism immortal micro dodged shot after shot of the roaches, and bought time for the rest of the Protoss army to arrive and drive the Zerg from their base. A swift counterattack by the Protoss quickly ended the game in their favor.

I'd like to think that before their game on moonlight madness, HuK and MC sent out a silent prayer into the cosmos, or perhaps into bnet chat or Skype. The prayer was for Parting to grant them Soul, in their quest against the Zerg. I'd like to think that somehow, from his perch of the MSI Semifinals, Parting heard these prayers and answered back "lol, kk". This would explain the extreme soul demonstrated in the immortal/sentry/adept all-in that showed the world that the True Dong was not invincible.

On their last life, BeastyQXC were once more up to pick their opponent. Do they pick True/DRG and possibly cause the final deflect? Or pick HuK/MC, who had taken the first life of theirs on day 2? They opt for the latter, and after some banter between HuK and QXC, the games begin.

A quick third base for HuK/MC is met with a push out of a modest force of about 12 marines and three cyclones. Two of the Cyclones lead the charge and quickly are forcefielded out and dismantled. The Protoss counterattack kills 16 SCVs and soon after the Terran third falls creating an insurmountable economic advantage for the Protoss.

Game two begins on Dash and Terminal. From hell's heart BeastyQXC stabs with their ghost build, but the all seeing eye of the scouting mothership core reports it, so BeastyQXC opt to cut the cloak part and go for a drop ship -- too late, as the warp prism and adepts arrive with the mothership core once more to end the series and so too the tournament.

Final Thoughts:

1. Archon Mode is Incredible

By now you’ve probably read plenty of reviews lauding the beauty that is archon mode. Whether it’s having the time to pull of the truly sick micro like dodging shots with warp prism micro, or more tense moments as a result of continuous harassment all game, or multi pronged aggression like BeastyQXC’s tank drops, it’s undeniable that Archon Mode adds a little something extra. We’re seeing more and more benefits of it too, such as the Red Bull player cams picking up what the players are figuring out from a scout such as “100 gas mined, ling speed finishing up in about 5 seconds” from QXC vs DRG game 1. And, speaking of BeastyQXC:

2. Foreigner Hope.

In 2009 Rekrul wrote a now-infamous blog post proclaiming “Foreigners Still Suck”. While the first few years of SC2 didn’t look quite so bleak for non-korean starcraft, these last two years have not been kind to the foreigner scene. Now, I won’t talk about HuK and MC, or about Puck and Bails also doing quite well, as this tournament occurred during a fairly peculiar and (it’s looking like) short-lived patch. However, what can be said is that through their preparation and good communication, Beastyqt and QXC performed better than any of the other 3 terran teams in attendance. Perhaps that’s a one-of, but then again they also performed well during the show matches too where they narrowly lost to HuK and Scarlett. Maybe it’s just those two, but then again, they weren’t the only foreigners this weekend to take games and sets against korean teams. Maybe it’s nothing, but it gives me hope at least. It seems like the better co-ordinated teams won more this weekend, regardless of background.

3. I can’t wait for Washington.

If I had to critique one thing about Santa Monica, it’s that there seems to be unfinished business now between team True Dong and HuK/MC. On the other hand, we don’t need to wait long to see that rivalry heat up again. Then there’s Violett and Masa’s team (by the way, how is that a thing? I mean, it’s awesome, but how does a Canadian Terran partner up with Violett?). They’ll add some personality to the event no doubt. And what about Bomber?! Who’s he going to team up with --I’m hoping he somehow teams up with Scarlett and then they play random. It sounds crazy but then again… Masa-Violett is a thing. But actually, I could see him teaming up with his SBENU teammate MMA.-- Finally, I think this format of Red Bull’s is really entertaining. True, it might not be as fun to play, but the ability to deflect really adds an exciting strategic element to it, as well as it seems more fair now that they’re paying out per BO3 win. Between a line up of living legends and their faithful sidekicks, the evolution of SC2’s newest rivalry, and a $30 000 prize pool, Red Bull Battlegrounds Washington is shaping up to be one of the most exciting tournaments of the year.

I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

It will be interesting to see the newest patch being played out, I feel like the game is getting more similar to HotS (especially Terran). MMA and Bomber will benefit from that.

Initially I was not excited for archon mode tournament as well, but the Santa Monica event had awesome games. Archon is not a silly competitive mode like 2x2 or 4x4.

I'm not familiar with making gifs, so I just did what was easiest. If you would be willing to help, send me a pm on TL. If I can make them in a better format I'd like to.

The easiest way is probably to use a service like Gfycat to host the gifs, and then embedding them on TL (assuming TL supports javascript and iframes).

I've seen TL articles with webms before.
