Players keep moving in South Korea since the end of 2014 Proleague. Today, we learned that Zerg player Shin « Hydra » Dong Won will not renew his contract with CJ Entus for the next season. After seven years spent with the korean team and notable results at IEM Singapore 2013 and Red Bull Battle Grounds Global last month, he is now looking for a new structure.
team-aAa.com : We learned today that you were leaving CJ Entus. Can you tell us a bit more ? Shin "Hydra" Dong Won : I leave CJ Entus because I have been member of the team and participating to KeSPA events for seven years. It is now time for me to discover new experiences through a foreign team. Do you have something to say to your former teammates ? Yes, it was a big part of my life. It is sad to leave the place where you have been since the age of 17, but I want to discover new things. Big thanks to CJ Entus ! What do you think about the new WCS rules ? There is good and bad things. I think they are fine for the foreign players and bad for the Koreans who play for a foreign team. What are your plans for the next season ? I would like to join a foreign team and compete in WCS North America or WCS Europe. I plan to leave South Korea and gain a visa to be part of one of those two tournaments. Any words for your fans ? I am really excited to meet you, I will train a lot and show you my best level very soon. I need your support !

All these super high quality Korean players, not enough salaries to go around in foreign teams...

Isn't that title completely misleading? He actually says the rules are bad for koreans on foreign teams but he wants to discover new experiences outside of kespa regardless.
|
HOW MANY FOREIGN TEAMS DO THESE KOREANS THINK ARE HIRING?! Jesus Christ why doesn't Kespa just move to NA already?

Some of them probably cant stand the kespa training regime anymore. Others just want to try new thins with military looming. Others are thinking of avoiding the inevitable forced retirements and cuts. Can't blame them.

Well its even more expensive if they need a place to stay in Europe or America. I am not sure if they all succed with that :/

I just don't get why are they all leaving before LotV comes in.
So, considering that TRUE is technically in Dead Pixels, we now have:
DRG Rain PartinG FanTaSy Hydra
4 Code S playoffs level guys and FanTaSy, who can really get them, lol. + There is Myungsik who left KT Rolster as well.
TL won't get anyone until TJ retires most likely, Acer will get probably one and outside of those two, noone really seems legit contender. YOE FLASH WOLVES FOR THE RESCUE PLEASE.
On less serious note, i hope they're still going to play in SPL.

Guys, you know foreigners give you like 300 gold when you kill them! (less exp though) Farming foreigners is the best strategy to reach MC the quickest.

What exactly in that interview justifies the title? :s Not only does he not give the new WCS rules as a reason for leaving, he even states that it's bad for players on foreign teams...

Title is totally misleading...

Interesting time to make this decision.

I dont know if these players see, that no major Team out of Korea hires atm? Maybe Acer and thats it. Yeah and new creations maybe.
I can understand the players leaving hte KeSPA Regime, you have to act like a robot to train so hard in the Team Houses, you give up so much for maybe so little. But these foreign teams, they all search for... they do not exist or have no spare slots atm.
Its a shame that the money and team thing develops so different from the talented players: so many players spread out of korea, so little teams can offoard them.
Damn this, lotv save us all.
|
Maybe this is who Acer picks up then. If they don't want a protoss...
|
The region-lock idea is backfiring even more. Going to have more Koreans in AM and EU than ever. Somehow I find the irony hilarious.

You can Share the cost like the GEM players do. He will need a team to pay him a decent salary. But living cost should be much cheaper than leaving in Seoul.
And it could be not just about the money. At least for me, when I worked abroad for a couple of years, it was more about the adventure. (Tax benefits for working abroad were good back then, tho)

So many top tier free agents to pick up for euro/us teams now...im worried that so few of them will actually get a proper contract.
Also the "full" interview consists of one more question which is the shoutout...

What sort of information is being perpetuated in the korean scene to imply the foreign one is doing well enough to keep hiring?

dafuq is going on, why they all want to leave KeSPA?
also what will happen to the Kespa teams, do they still have that drafting thing they shouwed in State of play for newbie players?
|
I hope Hydra finds a good team and we still see him perform well...
I'm sad about CJ Entus losing him though. (Sad about SKT too)
|
Considering the very few LANs in NA and the quite high cost of flights between NA/EU Im guessing all of them are aiming towards EU if possible. The competition for easy Dreamhack/Fragbite/HSC etc money just went almost full Code S. And Im really wondering if they made proper research or if MC/First/Yoda/Stardust told them it´s the Promised Lands. Im pretty sure we´ll see quite a few of these turn into a new Dear.

I'm wondering this too.
I've also been think that there are so many good teamless Korean players right now that if they can't find a home then KeSPA might have to go down the whole 8th Team route they had to do after MBCGame HERO, WeMade FOX and Hwaseung Oz all disbanded and see if they can land it a new big sponsor.
|
Another one? I'm afraid that 'foreign team' is a euphemism for 'retire'.
|
With all these Kespa Superstars being released and wanting to play abroad you could potentially as a team buy yourself a ticket to a WCS EU or AM final right now. Time for foreign Teams to invest!
|
The problem is that there's a lot of teamless korean. Also Pigbaby and Trap (that won WCS Am and MLG) haven't found a team. GL to Hydra
|
What a good timing for all these players leaving Kespa now that WCS region lock is in place.
Oh well getting a visa in EU is probably easier, however if everyone goes to EU, next season WCS EU would be significantly more challenging. Unless they can go to NA, with a harder route.

I'm pretty sure some of these guys just want a change of environment, especially the ones who have been in the Kespa system for years.
A year of trying your luck in foreign tournaments for a last payday before going for the army might be a motivation for some of them as well.

they want visas to come along with it when they join for that easy money. I have a feeling some broken promises will be made.

I doubt they will do the proper research before joining some putz team.

Seems like Kespa teams are somewhere the insiders want out, and the outsiders want in
|
let's try to think of an optimistic scenario:
1. top level kespa players leave for the glorious foreign land 2. few of them get a prestigeous foreign team soon (EG, Liquid, Acer, perhaps Ai) 3. few of them get a noname team a bit later (planetkey, meltdown, NRS...) 4. if they make a flat share even noname-team salary + online cup winnings or only savings + winnings could be enough to live - at least in europe (not on hight standards, but kespa players should be used to little place and those players are searching the adventure, not the money or comfort - at least, if they're saying the truth) 5. with these players not in kespa-teams anymore, free agents in korea have a good chance to get hired by kespa teams again, bringing their experience in and getting exposure 6. koreans living in europe and NA will raise the skill-level in these regions while in korea new players have to be grown to the top level - so the korean-foreign skillgap could become a bit smaller 7. ? 8. profit

New experiences might mean "easy money", considering the big competition in Korea, a foreign team souds so much better, especially now that players like Taeja are looking for a retirement soon.
|
This is like the worst possible timing ever, I wonder is PL going to be able to pull through, they need more teams and more players.
|
What is happening, Blizzard (soft) region locks WCS and KeSPA players leave their teams to join foreign teams, just wtf :D.
|
At this point, I really don't think any of these Koreans who are trying to leave Korea are doing it for the money. If every idiot in a forum thread can immediately say "but why??? There's no money in foreign teams, don't they see that??", I'm pretty certain that the players realize that they're not all going to get some sick salary from EG. Like Parting said in his interview, they're doing it because they want to travel the world while they're still young and meet foreign fans and shit.

So they all waited for Taeja to retire before daring the trip. Smart move.

I think Koreans are just looking at the amount of money to be made playing in the international scene compared to staying in just Korea. MC earned so much money from that, instead of being tied down in Korea / Kespa.

This comment is pretty hilarious given how tournaments have looked for the last few months. Flash struggling against MC and Stardust? Check. Solar and Zest both losing to Taeja? Check. San beating Byul into the ground? Check. DRG making the Ro8? Check.

Hmmm I don't feel that negative towards this. If there were no possibilities to go to foreign teams like in BW Hydra probably would've just retired. It's not that hard to imagine that spending 7 years in the same environment will become very uninspiring. I feel it's a positive thing there's possibilities (however limited) for these players to take new steps without having to quit Starcraft altogether.

All these guys leaving korean teams are going to end up on crappy little foreign teams or retiring soon. I'm guessing they're leaving in the first place because they are retiring soon. SC2 just doesn't pay anymore, and now that they can't even play in WCS NA and EU, they might as well move on.

WCS 2015: All kespa players leave Korea, in search of that sweet easy foreign money. WCS EU and AM both become as hard as GSL and all foreigners are eliminated immediately. Round of 8 WCS EU: Hydra, Solar, Cure, DRG, Zest, Rain, Parting, MC. WCS AM: soO, Stats, Innovation, TRUE, Maru, sOs, Soulkey, Flash. Meanwhile, only mediocre washouts are left in Korea. Now that GSL is so much less competitive, State, who has still been toiling away in the Prime house makes his first GSL. He becomes the first foreigner to win GSL, royal roading through such titans like SalvatioN, Miso, BrAvO, PenguiN, AnNyeong, and Zoun, before meeting MKP in the finals. He beats MKP so badly that he cries (as expected). However, no one gives his win any weight, as he was too much of a 'coward' to play in the REAL SC2 leagues, WCS AM and EU.

So many moves. I hope there'll be some influx as well -- SPL got just a lot weaker today.

I think Hydra had too much fun at Redbull lol

My apartment is open for any KeSPA pros who need a place to train and stay :B

Hydra's name doesn't have as much of a draw as some of these other free agents, though. Hard to compete with them for offers while wanting to move countries etc. But that's a strong commitment he is looking to make, too. Hope he finds a good home. I only really trust liquid or acer to give these players everything, opportunity wise. Funny, EG is a name I would have said a long time ago.. but now it's like.. are they trying to drop out of SC2 entirely?

It will be hilarious if Blizzard end up prohibiting anyone with gorgeous hair and narrow shape of eyes from playing outsid Korea

Wow look at that list of names who will never reach Code S again. Everyone knows foreign Koreans can't compete in Korea. Failures looking for easy foreign money.

The situation is very chaotic, but in the same time - everything is too logical, if you think for a moment. It's not fair to be one of the best and to play with the best players and not to participate in more tournaments like all other pro's arround the wolrd. The Proleague is over for this year, and this is the last GSL too. There are few empty months without tournaments, and in the same time every month IEM and Dreamhacks happen, while foreign players are collecting more WCS points for Blizzcon. And you may be one of the best, but If you are not a champion in Code S, you're nothing and your carreer is unsecure. Yes, it is also about money, it's not like what Parting is talking about, money and WCS points and many tournaments for which koreans are hungry. Damn, in Code A there are so many good players which can defeat most of the NA and Europe WCS regions, but they are in a shadow! So I can understand the decidion that Rain, Parting, Fantasy or Hydra made. Who cares if you lose some shape out of Korea, for the foreing fans you're superhero, and that is what so many koreans desire for!

Solar and Zest both losing to Taeja? Check. San beating Byul into the ground? Check. DRG making the Ro8? Check. I'd never say that you don't know what you're talking about, but it certainly looks that way. How bored are you that you answered to a post, that called Rain a failure looking for easy foreign money?
I probably should have left the at the end of my post. I assumed the sarcasm as obvious. My bad.

I don't understand why KeSPA can't just give more opportunity to its players to participate in foreign weekend tournaments, and why Blizzard can't just give more money/leagues to Korea, instead of this awkward foreign team hunt situation.

Because their sponsors gain nothing from letting the players go overseas. Just like a foreign team's sponsor gains (almost) nothing from competing on PL.

First SKT. Now CJ. KT next? WCS 2015 having a huge effect already.

I'm thinking these players are saying they aren't renewing their contracts because they want to go to the foreign scene, but in reality all the KeSPA teams are offering lower-paying contracts in light of the new WCS rules and they think they can get better somewhere else.

KeSPA teams care way more about Proleague than they do GSL.
|
At this rate, proleague 2015 will be round robin of 4 teams that last for one week.

I can't imagine what it has been like to live in a Korean team house for years, toiling away at your computer station 12-14 hours a day (? actual number of hours but it seems to be a lot), knowing that there is a world out there that you may not get to experience any other way than trying to play SC2 in Europe or the U.S.
These are young men who soon must "grow up," do their required time in the military (a bit scary with N. Korea and China nearby?) and then get "real" jobs. This may be a big opportunity for them to see new places, different people, meet more fans, experience the world. Will it work out that way? Who knows? I bet a lot of young people in the U.S. would jump at the chance to do something they love, something they are good (or great) at, and make the most of this time when they are free to travel and explore parts of the world.

I like how region locking is having the exact opposite of its intended effect
then again, most of these players won't even find foreign teams to play on. and certainly they won't find foreign teams willing to pay them a salary commensurate with what they were making in kespa

i think looking for foreign teams is a good thing, provided there are enough foreign teams who can take korean talent on and provided the korean player helps out the team acting as a new 'practice partner'.

Hydra being very optimistic here Trap won an MLG and is still teamless I don't know if people have been telling him stories about foreign land or if this is just him going yolo before military service

What makes you think region lock has anything to do with it? Their contracts are just expiring around this time. It doesn't make sense to say Kespa pro's are leaving their teams because it's become harder to play abroad. If anyhting it suggests they've been planning on leaving for a while and haven't changed their minds with the WCS changes.

Thus confirming his statement that all wcs regions are equal and a new age of harmony and peace is seen in the SC2 community..
Except twitch chat..
We still don't talk about twitch chat.

I'm not sure for WHY this is happening, perhaps it's good will, no judging..
BUT
I REAAAAAALLLLY hope that we get to see Proleague.. It's hands-down the best SC2 experience (when not being at work ) - at the highest level, and the games are the top-notch-best-possible quality..
Save Proleague

I can understand that they all want to experience travel to foreign countries and what not, but all these sudden leavers are being wildly optimistic if they believe this is actually a better choice for their progaming careers. Winning bunches of foreign tournaments is NOT as easy as it sounds. Even the machine INnoVation didn't win any, despite coming close several times.
