Maru is way too strong at this game

Maru must be sleepy. That is the only way that he might lose.

These groups are awesome, its crazy seeing First do so well again, it's like the meta has gone in a giant circle and is now ending up back where it was at the beginning of HotS haha.

I'm most hyped about Group C but that seems to be the minority... and Group A is for sure group of death with IMO the easiest group being Group D.

Really looking forward to this event as I haven't watched a premiere SC2 tournament live in a while!

I'm sorry but who even cares about First? He's got no personality, he hasn't accomplished anything, I just don't understand why people like people like First, or Yoda. Literally faceless and boring.

How were the wild cards chosen? It's quite a bummer to those Koreans who participated at the qualifiers, but didn't make the cut.

Since it's fan favourites getting the wild cards, I suppose I see the commercial reasoning.

TaeJa won IEM Shenzhen so we invited him to defend his "title".
sOs was sent by KeSPA as Proleague Round 4 MVP
HyuN was #1 on WCS ranking
MC was #2 on WCS ranking

Inviting based on WCS ranking is such crap. I can't stand it. It's a self fulfilling thing; MC and Hyun get lots of points because they get invited to everything and they get invited to everything because they have a lot of points.

Both Hyun and MC have both gotten almost enough points from the WCS circuit alone to qualify for Blizzcon. Even with no invites at all they would be at Blizzcon.

So? They still get invites for having points, and points for having invites. I feel like the WCS invites should go the more fringe players 13th-20th or so area where their chances at Blizzcon exist but they still need to prove themselves, before they get invites for the top guys who are just going to further the gap pointlessly

EDIT: Obviously I'm talking about WCS ranking based invites only. I fully support inviting the title defender and the Proleague MVP

Inviting the people at 13th-20th is an absolutely awful idea that would cause a huge problems. People would be throwing accusations that the people at Blizzcon are only there because the tournament organizers favoured them even more so than when they invite Hyun and MC. At least Hyun and MC are completely through, and their chances at Blizzcon aren't impacted by this at all. What do you think would happen if say Snute got an invite and pushed out a KeSPA player from Blizzcon because of this tournament. The KeSPA elitists that frequent this forum would go crazy. Do you remember the outcry that happened when Revival was invited to IEM last year when he was in 17th place?

I'd like to see them prove it then. A tournament should not give WCS points if there are any invites at all.

They have proved it. If you add up the points that they have gotten out of tournaments where they were not invited they still easily make Blizzcon. You may have a problem with the points distribution of different tournaments particularly the GSL, the whole invite system, and the way the rich get richer, however invites have no bearing on whether MC or HyuN make Blizzcon.

I think the issue with Revival getting invited, sans the blatant bias most people had for wanting Naniwa in Blizzcon is that the norm has been to invite your MCs and your Hyuns, and deviating from that norm for one player at the very end is bullshit.

Furthermore this would give invites to Kespa players not take them away or unfavor them. In the completely arbitrary group of rankings that I suggested half of them are current Kespa with Pigbaby being former. This would allow your soo's and your rain's who don't usually get to foreign tournaments the chance to get more WCS points than just GSL performances. And with the "must advance a round" rule should they bomb out in the first place they get no points meaning they STILL need to prove themselves at the actual tournament. And if Snute received an invite, proved himself by advancing through the tournament and getting enough points to go to blizzcon, then he damn well deserved it. Same as MMA or Hero or Rain

A much fairer system than say MC and Hyun (who are very likely to show up anyway because they're supported by organizations that fly them around the world all the time) here is the potential for even more points that you don't in any way need while players like the three time consecutive GSL silver medalist sits in the GSL and quietly dominates but not enough to keep his blizcon spot safe.

I don't agree. If Snute get points in a tournament after receiving an invite, and due to that succeeds in getting to Blizzcon instead of another player its hugely unfair towards that other player. If that other player had been invited to the tournament instead of Snute its likely that the positions would be reversed. An additional issue is that expecting impartial invites within that list of players from the tournament organizers is impossible. Inviting people like MC and Hyun is the less controversial option as it doesn't impact Blizzcon, and there is some systematic way (WCS points) of deciding the invites.

The only problem I see with that view is that Snute in this hypothetical still needs to do something. That invite doesn't get him blizzcon. He still needs to perform at the event. Yes another player could have been invited instead and maybe the situation would be reversed. But at the same time Snute isn't exactly the player I'm talking about here either. Liquid likely would (as they already are) sending him to IEM regardless of an invite. This is more to the benefit of your Classic/Soo/Rain fringe.

But i do agree its the least controversial choice. Although for every invite we don't usually get to see those that declined so who knows who else IEM had lined up should any player say no

Someone's always going to be butthurt, but imo giving more points to those who already have points because they already have points is silly. Especially when those players travel around anyway

I wonder if the points handed out during that bogus g3 tourney will make a difference for blizzcon
The shitstorm would be glorious

Bunny qualified though. I guess if the 375 points that Snute got matter. Luckily our saviors HyuN and MC monopolized two of the top 4 spots as usual to lessen the risk of it making a difference for blizzcon.

Why even have invites for tournaments? Let those spots be filled by more players from the qualifiers.

I agree with you 100%, invites based on wcs points have no upsides. Hyun + MC don't need the wcs points and they block spots from potential qualifiers! Let everybody qualify for an equal chance to get the money and wcs points instead of just the rich getting richer.
I'd like to help! :)

Polt, Zest and Taeja in the same group, holy crap. This group harkens back to the days of Parting, Life, Flash and Innovation in GSL.
