Welcome this month's edition of the top 50 streamers list.

This one is done a bit more hastily than others, thanks to upcoming math exams. Did you know that the empty set is a generator for the trivial group? >.>

Table of contents
  • Huh? What's this?
  • Top 50 streamers in February 2014
    • Sorted by avg. viewer
    • Sorted by avg. viewer * hours streamed
    • Stray observations and musings
  • The big picture
  • WCS/GSL
  • Proleague
  • Older entries

Huh? What's this?

For those of you who don't already know what this is about: I'm gathering various data (viewers, game, events, etc.) from all the streams that are presented on teamliquid.net (those that you can in the sidebar to your right) and use that data to produce the pretty tables and graphs you see below. The tables only contain SC2 players (that is, streams of people playing games of Starcraft 2) and not casters, teams or other streams. The tables also only contain Starcraft 2 related activities. So, for instance when CatZ is streaming Dota2, it will not be taken into account.

The data I gather is then turned into the tables you see below. One is sorted by the average viewers, the other is sorted by the average viewers times the hours streamed. The latter table favors those that stream a lot, while the former table favors popular streamers regardless of how much they stream. Either ranking has its advantages and disadvantages, and thus I present both.

For either table, I have a minimum required stream time of 5 hours to be included in the list.

The list

Due to space limitations, I have to shorten the headers and leave some data out of the tables presented here. You can get the full tables from the links below.
The headers aren't as clear as I'd like them to be thanks to this, so here's a quick explanation, just in case: "Viewers" denotes the average viewers in the given month. "Hours" are the hours played. "Place diff" and "Viewer diff" are the place and viewer differences compared to last month.

Also, the HTML version linked beneath the images has some more information that I had to leave out due to space limitation, most notably the featured status of the players.

Now, Without further ado, here's this month's tables:

Stray observations and musings

  • Just like last month, Stephano was the dominating streaming force, getting the #1 spot in both lists this time around. Despite losing some viewers, he has a comfortable lead over the corresponding second place streamers.
  • In contrast to the last couple of months, the top 4 of the average viewer category are streamers who streamed a good number of hours this time. That didn't help Destiny, who lost a few places in both categories from losing some viewers and streaming considerably less hours of SC2.
  • I forgot to mention last time that these numbers include (and will continue to include) players streaming Starbow, or any other SC2 mod. I don't think there's a good reason to differentiate the two, as I then would have to exclude streamers playing arcade games with their subs as well. Which is pretty much impossible for me to do, anyhow, as I have to work within the game categories used on teamliquid.net.
  • Speaking of which, welcome back, Tasteless, who did stream some Starbow last month.
  • Here's some information on some of the lesser known names in the lists:
    • (Wiki)Hui:Hui is a Taiwanese player who is mostly playing in the TeSL. His fanbase seems to be found mostly outside of teamliquid and in the Taiwanese community, unsurprisingly.
    • (P)KingCobra: He's a Russian streamer and commentator, mostly playing daily and weekly cups.
    • (Wiki)PsY is "an American Zerg player and YouTuber", says Liquipedia. And who am I to distrust Liquipedia?
    • Winter: A nice guy who has managed to get 490 viewers on average despite not being featured. Go check him out!
  • Notable absentees last month: MarineKing, IdrA, CranK, SaSe.
  • If you find any mistakes or errors in the lists, please do let me know, especially concerning team changes or players that you are absolutely sure should be on the lists, but are not.

The big picture

(The actual numbers are not important, it's the ratio between month that's important.)

Note that these are player streams only.

Not a whole lot to say here. Player stream numbers have gone down again, now that WCS is back in full force (and doing pretty well, as shown below).

Overall stream views

(The actual numbers are not important, it's the ratio between month that's important.)

And while the player stream numbers have gone down, the overall numbers have gone up slightly. Next month's numbers are more interesting, with the IEM World Championship coming up. Let's see if their move to a winner-takes-all prize pool is going to pay off or not.

As I mentioned last month, I'm not sure if I will continue the overall monthly viewer chart once MLG comes around, as there won't be any live viewer numbers available for that event.

WCS/GSL

The WCS numbers are getting more and more equal. While WCS Europe used to get higher numbers, regularly beating the 30.000 viewers mark, both WCS America and GSL are getting pretty good viewer numbers. WCS AM especially is getting more and more viewers.

Proleague

Proleague numbers are still fluctuating a good bit, but much like WCS AM, the numbers are steadily growing bigger, with the highest average being >20.000 viewers for Samsung Khan vs. SKT1. The Race Wars were not quite getting as much interest, however.

That's all for this month. Hope you guys enjoyed, as always. Any kind of feedback is always welcome!

Yes, indeed. You have chosen the right path with math. Stay strong and you will prevail!

Thx for that summary!

Looks good, I personally think this year so far is going great for starcraft2.

Stephano is retired yet the most popular. The reasons for this are obvious, but we'd like to see him in the Top 50 or whatever of SC2 players.

He's playing Starcraft 2. That makes him a SC2 player.

Strange that you would make this odd criticism of Stephano but not others like Destiny who mostly streams other games.

I think he popped in for a bit one day, but not significant enough obviously to be on this list. I don't even know if he broke the 5 hour requirement.

imagine if wcs EU and gsl would trade their time zones.. wcs EU gets most of the viewers cause they have perfect timezone conditions (normal time for EU and early 11am-15pm for AM) but the games are not that epic though :/

The tables also only contain Starcraft 2 related activities. So, for instance when CatZ is streaming Dota2, it will not be taken into account.

Do you have the viewer numbers for Proloeage last year? I really think SPL is the biggest success story so far .

Can't agree with the WCS AM upwards trend though. as group C was the weakest so far and group D got a huge spike because Europeans stayed up just to see Jaedong. So I don't think the numbers will grow further, but rather stabilize somewhere below 20k now.

Really interesting post as always, thanks for the work!
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Did he not stream any SC2 at all? The streamers have to set which game they play themselves on teamliquid, and sometimes they forget to change that (like Tasteless did some months ago). I can't manually check every stream, so I have to rely on this.

You are actually correct! Stephano hasn't streamed nearly as much ever since I started to gather stream viewer data (Which would be April 2012). Neat.

Blows my mind that Stephano still streamed for almost 100 hours last month, so like 20 of his games (tee hee). I assume that he probably streamed almost 100% of the time he played though compared to when he played professionally when he wanted to hide some of his practice.

I think we can still call Stephano an EG player. Also this might be the last time you see Hui, he has retired to focus on casting.

that's a cryin' shame.

someone should get out their pitchforks and persuade one Sundance Digiovanni to provide you with the live event viewer numbers.

if some campaign is started to do this i'll pitch in (no pun intended).
