Breaking Out Last September, Breaking Out Season 1 launched and spent eight weeks highlighting a different up & coming player in the North American scene each week. After spending some time learning about these players, we watched them duke it out in the Breakout Invitational, wielding a prize pool of over $2,000.
The first season of Breaking Out gave a lot of early glimpses at some great North American Talent. Players like SaroVati, JonSnow, Sonic and Hellokitty have been showing some great skill in various tournaments and qualifiers since. These players from Season 1 were handpicked as talented players in North America who had the potential to do great things. However, we're going to be changing things up a bit as we jump into Season 2...
We're really excited to announce Season 2 of Breaking Out. However, the climate has changed for broadcasting Starcraft since last September, and the old schedule would have a contradicting message if we broadcasted during WCS America on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. So, we're going to change it up! And we need your help to decide what time we should broadcast. Vote for your preference! Here are the potential days for the broadcast.
All Brodcasts are planned to happen at 6:00pm PST/9:00pm EST.+ Show Spoiler +Option 1 (2 days a week) - Thursday = Interview | Friday = XvZ, XvT, XvP, Awesome Game & Funday Option 2 (2 days a week) - Monday = Interview | Friday = XvZ, XvT, XvP, Awesome Game & Funday Option 3 (3 days a week) - Thursday = Interview | Friday = XvZ, XvT, XvP | Saturday = Awesome Game & Funday Option 4 (3 days a week) - Monday = Interview | Friday = XvZ, XvT, XvP | Saturday = Awesome Game & Funday

Are you a player interested in being on Breaking Out? Well before we get into how you can qualify, first you need to register! Registration is an required part of being considered for the show no matter what qualification method you use. So, let's go over how to register.
Submit an e-mail to feardragon64@gmail.com with the following information by February 8th 1) Proof of North American Residency. While Visa's are preferred, we will work with you on a case by case basis if you think you have another valid form of proof. 2) Your best replay that you feel shows off the strongest aspects of your playstyle. 3) A link to your battle.net profile on your main account(will be the only account considered for reaching the ladder qualification mentioned later). 4) A 5-15 minute video of yourself answering the following questions: a) What is your name, age & race? b) What do you do for a living? c) Tell us the most interesting fact about yourself that you can think of. d) Describe your playstyle for us. e) Why do you deserve the chance to be the next breakout player? f) What does Starcraft mean to you?
Once you submit your application and it has been processed, we will respond to confirm or deny it. We are reserving the right to reject applications. However, the main reason we're doing so is to prevent players that already have a good bit of notoriety. Some good examples would be if for some reason Evil Geniuses' Huk or Acer's Scarlett applied, their applications would be rejected because I don't think anyone could argue they haven't already "broken out." If you have any question of whether you would be accepted or rejected, feel free to shoot an e-mail and ask. All applications will be considered by a small committee due to the arbitrary nature of issue.
Similar to Season 1, there will be a total of eight players on the show. In the interest of making qualifications as open as possible to everyone walking the different paths of life, we've opened up three different methods of qualification.
Qualification Methods 1) The four registered players that hold the highest ranking on the North American ladder will be given a spot on the show. This does not mean you have to hold spot 1, 2, 3 or 4 in GM. You just have to be the highest ranked of all those who are trying to qualify. The end time for the ladder qualification will be 11:59pm EST on February 8th.
2) Two separate tournament qualifiers will be held for those unable to qualify through the first method. The first place finisher of both qualifiers will earn a spot on the show. The first qualifier will be held on February 8th at 2:00pm EST. It will be hosted by NanMan and MasterDalk and more details will be available soon. The second qualifier's date will also be announced in the near future. For updates on the qualifiers, be sure to register. Bracket for the first qualifier: http://www.excello.net/tournament/4600/breaking-out-s2-q2/ Bracket for the second qualifier: http://www.excello.net/tournament/4600/breaking-out-s2-q2/
3) If you've been unable to qualify through the ladder or through the tournament qualifiers, one last qualification method is possible. The final two player spots will be awarded via invite. These players will be picked by a small committee and be decided by various factors including the answers given in their application video, performance in various tournaments, etc.
Be sure to remember in order to qualify, you MUST register. Don't forget to before the deadline(BY February 8th, NOT ON the date.
The show eventually leads up into an eight man tournament that has a $1000 base prize pool that has payout even to last place. However, we do take donations for that prize pool to increase. Last season through donations we were able to raise the prize pool an additional $1153.32 through donations. If you'd like to contribute to the prizepool for the next Breakout Invitational, feel free to use the link below to do so!
Big thank you's go out to everyone that has made this possible. From those who helped with the art assets for this season and the last (Noobity, Sybert, MinnyMausGG) to those who have provided feedback and adminstration help(Wyrd, NanMan, MasterDalk), to the all the viewers of the first Season, I extend my thanks for helping to make this all possible. I also want to send a big thank you to all the players working hard in North America! Last thank you to DeadlyGaming for lending their support in the creation of many of the graphical assets.

what if youd like to register yet you don't have a webcame or anything to record a 15 min video of yourself?

That includes being able to see their beautiful faces during an interview. Becoming more than just some faceless gamer tag or disembodied voice!

Hey, quick question- When we email you our ladder account will that be kept private? I've gone through a lot of effort to ladder in anonymity on a barcode. (my real name is on the acc to prove its mine)

Feel free to just e-mail the address if you have any questions on whether a particular form of proof would be valid.

I also considered doing a "qualification period ending" stream and if you really did not want to be mentioned, I would try to avoid mentioning your name during such.

Great to see some great players applying. I recognize a lot of the players, and have even seen a few I'm not as familiar with!
I want to remind everyone to vote for the time slot you'd prefer the show to be at as well. Right now it's pretty close between Thurs/Fri and Thurs/Fri/Sat!
I am also considering releasing an active list of registered players. I will likely do so sometime in the next few days.

Bumping since there's more info on the first qualifier that's coming up this Saturday(February 8th)! I wanted to remind people that if they want to participate in the tournament, they must submit their registration on time! Registration deadline is coming up, as is the first qualifier so hurry!
For anyone that's already registered, I'll be trying to contact you as soon as a page is up to register for the qualifier. Be on the lookout for it!

Any update on who the top 4 from ladder are so far?

wait so sws signed up for the qualifier, but if he stays in top 4, he won't be able to play in it because...hes already accepted right?

Qualifier spots will be considered first. If someone qualifies in the qualifier tomorrow, then we'll just ignore them during consideration of the ladder.

Just FYI Pilipili has about 20 or so games in his match history where either a zerg barcode or a player name [TTSyf] Miku are leaving at the start giving pilipili free wins which is inflating his ladder rank by about 200-300 points.

Hey i just havea question, all the newly non-american/canadian flags that are in the qualifier? Did you approve them all? I guess theyt all have proof of NA residency?

The registration date is technically at the end of today, so they still have time to register after the qualifier, but of course we're going to still be checking NA residency. Those with flags for different countries are being removed but there should be an announcement in the chat to all the players participating to confirm they'll register today. I don't know why someone who couldn't register would knowingly participate after that since there's no prize for the qualifier besides qualifying. =b

Hey guys! Big updates on how everything is going!
First of all, HUGE congrats to IvD's Phog for being the first player to qualify for Breaking Out through the Breaking Out Qualifier #1! Really looking forward to having him on the show.
Now, here's an update on the current ladder standings as of this moment. There's still a good bit of time left and two little asterisks to talk about with these standings of the top 7, but here they are regardless as of about 7:30pm EST(4.5 hours before ladder lock).
1) [Clarity Gaming] rebOrn(Z) - 1649 2) [Micro Gamerz] PiLiPiLi(P) - 1639 3) [CORE] Believe(P) - 1639 4) [Dust] sWs(P) - 1610 ------------------------ 5) [Deimos] Siphonn - 1510 6) [IvD] Phog - 1500 - Already Qualified 7) [Micro Gamerz] - KaWiKaAkirA - 1402
So first, the two notes that need to be talked about in regards to this list. 1) First of all, Clarity Gaming's Poo and IvD's ZergZingZing are both registered for Breaking Out and their ladder profiles show they are in Grandmaster. However, for some reason I've had some trouble seeing their placement. It seems almost as if Battle.net is glitched because one section of their profile shows __ wins and __ loses, but when I go to the "current season" section of their profile, it suddenly shows 0 wins and 0 losses with a GM border. They are also not to be found on the actual GM list. I'm not sure what's up with this but I'll try to figure out their placement in GM as soon as possible. Edit: After talking to Poo and sWs, it seems this confusion is caused by dropping out of GM from bonus pool build up. Poo said he was unfortunately kicked out after his PC broke down and he couldn't play.
2) There has been some controversy in regards to MgZ's PiLiPiLi. It seems he a notable number of games that were "free wins" given under 10 seconds into a game. If this was at all planned, it would be against the integrity of the qualification process and PiLiPiLi would be at least disqualified from the Ladder Qualification process. However, it is a very difficult thing to prove intention. PiLiPiLi has contacted me regarding the issue saying the following:
Hey! I saw that someone posted that i was having free wins. True, i got lucky and caught person when he was mad. I was streaming all my ladder games last 5-7 days. I am not sure how i can proof it and give evidence to you, but if you tell me how i will be glad to do so. Also i am pretty sure that other people got free wins as well, because it always happens . If you ever watched avilo, he always leaving games when he is mad. If you want me to give you any proofs to my legitimate i am willing to do so. Link to my twitch http://www.twitch.tv/pilipili96 . http://www.twitch.tv/pilipili96/dashboard/stats you can compare time i was streaming and playing on ladder is the same. Right now the committee for Breaking Out is looking into the issue. More likely than not, PiLiPiLi will not be completely banned from Breaking Out unless it can somehow be proven that there was malevolent intention of boosting his ladder ranking. Instead, the committee will be determining whether his account will be considered for ladder qualification, and he will be given the chance to qualify through other means such as the second qualifier(since the first is now over), as well as potentially be considered for the invites. I understand that this is a difficult and awkward situation as allegations of cheating are always a cause for concern and heated opinions. I hope that everyone, including other players, also respect the decision that is made on the matter and realize that we are doing our best to be as fair as possible.
Thanks everyone who has been participating! I'm thinking I will likely start a stream roughly 30 minutes before the ladder lock(11:30pm EST) as a big of an "announcement" stream for the next 4 players that will qualify. If I end up doing so, I'll try to get it on the TL calendar and will be streaming at: http://www.twitch.tv/feardragon64
Looking forward to it! Hope all the players are working hard!
|
I don't think 300 points in four hours is possible for me D: hehe. Damnit, guess I'll have to really try hard at the next qualifier. I want in this bad >_<
and Guitarcheese posted all the proof needed to totally DQ Pilipili from the Ladder Ranking qualification imo. That's blatant.

I would agree that it's not uncommon to match a player every once and a while who just quits, however guitarcheese said it was 20-30 games and if this is accurate, no one gets 20-30 free wins unless it is intentional... just my 2c's though, happy with whatever you guys decide. Thanks for the update ^_^
/edit;
His current record is 68-50..
take away 20-30 free wins and he has a negative record and is bottom 100 xD
intentional or not he doesn't deserve to be included in the ladder qualifier ಠ_ಠ

Tried to apply, looking forward to see who's gonna be competing this season!

Ok so I've taken a very very thrurough look at PiLiPiLi's profile on battle.net. Based on what I have seen, PiLiPiLi will not be able to qualify for Breaking Out through the ladder qualification proccess. He will still be able to qualify through the tournament qualifiers being held, and considered for the invites.
So here's the logic behind this decision. PiLiPiLi's SC2 account is sitting in GM at an incredibly high spot right now. Due to these forfeits that have happened 3-25 seconds into a match, PiLiPiLi's account has gained a distinct and undeniable advantage over everyone else trying to qualify right now. Here are some of the findings. 1) The total extra points earned in the past 3-4 days from these forfeits are at least 327. For reference, the difference between the number one placing registered player and the 7th is about 250. 2) These match forfeits happened over the course of multiple days. This makes it seem unlikely that it was mere coincidence that PiLiPiLi kept hitting these players after requeue'ing up. 3) The two players forfeitting to PiLiPiLi were not seen forfeiting to anyone else. After combing through every game in their past week, I couldn't find any forfeits to a player besides PiLiPiLi. This makes it seem less likely that the forfeits were due to frustration with a particular race, etc. as both accounts(a barcode and another account named miku) played against various other Protoss players and won/lost.
These facts make the whole situation incredibly suspect. However, as I mentioned in a previous post, intention is very difficult to prove in these situations. Unfortunately, videos are not available on PiLiPiLi's channel from the times where those games were played(expired) so his defense is difficult to check. It's very difficult to dispute that PiLiPiLi was being targeted, but it's very difficult to make the judgement call that he was involved in it. It could have been a helpful friend acting on smurf accounts. It could have been a malicious person trying to make PiLiPiLi look bad. Maybe it was just pure coincidence. For that reason, I am making the decision not to ban PiLiPiLi completely from Breaking Out, but just from the ladder qualification.
It's regretable that this situation arose but it is something that will continue to be one of the concerns with using the ladder as a means to qualify. However, I'm still very happy with how the ladder qualifications have gone so far and think that the pro's have outweighed the cons in using it. My biggest regret is that I didn't do a better job keeping an updated ranking as Shoutcraft does with the ladder qualifications to build some hype. This is something I've never done before so I'll be sure to learn from my mistakes and make things better in the future.
With that being said, only 3 hours left until ladder lock! I know a lot of the players are still hard at laddering! I wish them the best of luck as we find out soon who are going to be the 4 players joining Phog on the show. =]

isn't the next ladder lock a week before the season ends, so in march?

Ok, we're 30 minutes away from the lock. As of right now, here are the standings: 1) CORE Believe - 1653 2) Clarity rebOrn - 1649 3) Dust sWs - 1610 IvD Phog - 1526(already qualified) 4) Deimos Siphonn(P) - 1510 --------- 5) Gravity Kreos(Z) - 1452 5) MgZ KaWiKaAkira(Z) - 1402 6) Gravity Baldwin(Z) - 1401
Right now it looks like Believe, rebOrn and sWs are looking pretty safe in their spots with a solid 150 point lead. Siphonn is also rocking a 60ish point lead above the next highest, Kreos, but with 40 minutes left that's actually a pretty reachable distance. Really interested to see how that is going to be going! KaWiKaAkira and Baldwin are both tailing another 50 points behind. While it may be a little more difficult to get 110 points in the next 30 minutes, it's still worth a shot!
For now, the main fight will be between Deimos Siphonn and Gravity Kreos. Best of luck to the both of them! I'll continue with updates as we get closer to the deadline.

On February 09 2014 11:10 feardragon wrote: Ok so I've taken a very very thrurough look at PiLiPiLi's profile on battle.net.

UPDATE ALREADY! HUGE CHANGE! 10 MINUTES LEFT
I JUST received the registration for ANOTHER player(25 minutes before the deadline!) IvD's Ruff has registered and is going to change the standings in the most important location! The standings are now:
1) CORE Believe - 1662 2) Clarity rebOrn - 1649 3) Dust sWs - 1610 4) IvD Ruff - 1550 --------- 4) Deimos Siphonn(P) - 1542 5) Gravity Kreos(Z) - 1452
This is becoming a CLOSE fight between IvD's Ruff, who registered literally minutes ago, and Deimos Siphonn. Kreos, who also registered minutes ago, is also not
This has become so close that I'm just going to keep updates on Twitter for the next 10 minutes: http://www.twitter.com/feardragon64
Ruff is also streaming his games over at : http://www.twitch.tv/ruff13

Kinda silly you don't invite hendralisk to this and make him qual. Watching that last series, it wasn't at all close and seemed like a complete joke of a series.

Then I wasn't used to some of his strategies and just got rolled over, shit happens

Wasn't he also just in the MLG online tourney as well?

In regards to Hendralisk, I view Hendralisk as a player who people might recognize the name of, but maybe don't know too much about unless you follow the local Candian scene. He's been around for a while, but give his skill, he has always seemed to me like a player that gets less attention than maybe he deserves.
In a sense, Hendralisk reminds me of a "Hellokitty" pick from Breaking Out Season 1. A player that had shown results, had a name that was recognized, but that people seemed to not know much about or underestimated.
As for what EJK was saying about Hendralisk being in the MLG tournament, I'd remind people that Siphonn was in it as well. Not to mention, many other players from Breaking Out were actually on the voting, like Bones, JonSnow, SaroVati, etc.
Whenever we received an application that could be seen as an "edge case," it was discussed among a committee formed. While hendralisk is a more well known player than many of the others in Breaking Out, we decided to let him register based on the reasons mentioned above. As for why we didn't invite him, invites are only given to players after the other 6 players have qualified. This is to avoid inviting a player that could otherwise show their capabilities in qualifying.
Hope that answers some of the questions being mentioned. I will say that performance in the qualifiers is definitely one of the things I personally am looking at when deciding who to invite. It's not the only factor, but it's certainly one of them.

Hope they invite some NA terrans :D I kind of choked vs hendralisk TT
