I miss MVP! I miss waking up 6 am extremely hyped for the gsl... I miss the pre-kespa, pre-wcs, pre-hots starcraft2....
Man, watching MMA vs DRG was just mind blowing! And all of nestea's gsl runs!!! Man, mvp vs squirtle and that 7th game cheese...
I'm so nostalgic now...hahahahah, who remembers Jinro vs Idra on gsl 3 i think?? Jinro was my first favorite player, and i remember cheering so much for him against idra on that ro8!

The writing about that game seven, ugh gives me chills.
Great job; fucking loved that game, I may have even cried.

T_T i hate that gom did this. I will never understand the hype for mvp vs squirtle game 5

I'm still for Jjakji-Leenock all the way. MMA vs DRG had one good game in the series that everyone remembers, apart from that, eh.

Squirtle vs Mvp game 7 is amazing. I got teary eyed reading that description of Mvp. He is such an inspiration. Wow...

i remember just one game from the GSL October 2011 finals, even though i was there in person. there was a game on daybreak where MMA did a proxy hellion into marine/tanks, it was nutzo.
i'm really glad for this list though, i remember watching most of the series when they aired live, the jjakji-leenock was so intense in every game down to the very last second of belshir winter, where jjakji was using buildings to find burrowed banelings.
watching the MVP vs squirtle series now haha, friggin' BCs in the vortex

When talking about this final, a lot of us point to the fifth game game as the pinnacle of the series, but I disagree. Game seven was the best game we've seen in StarCraft 2. It may have been just twelve minutes long and ended by a cheese rush, but not even the longest and most action-packed macro game could compare to the excitement and emotion in that game.
Agreed, which is why the "Best Games of 2012" article baffled me so much when it wasn't even included in the top 40 (baffles me even more now, since you were a contributing writer ).
Loved the article though. Game 7 of the #1 and #2 (along with game 5 of Nestea vs sC) were some of the most emotional moments of my life. Mvp vs Squirtle could have had the added context about the general balance of the time, with most people thinking Protoss was very favored against Terran, as well as the fact that Mvp's TvP was thought to be by far his worst.
Also, game 1 of MMA vs DRG was sick, especially the ending. Surprised that didn't get a mention.

People who didn't cry during game 7 of Mvp vs Squirtle are probably made of rocks or dry grass because you don't have feelings

MVP vs Squirtle was so... fucking... good.
Let's hope this year's GSL can show us some entries worthy of this list.

I definitely shed some tears back then, I was on the edge of my bed, my heart pounding, looking on at every little moment in absolute silence, the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. I remember how I felt my spirit sink as I saw Mvp's first part of the all-in get pushed back, and then I remember pure elation when he managed to dupe Squirtle and kill the Zealot and Stalker, then the explosion of joy when the GG came, and a big smile spread across Mvp's face.
It was beautiful, SC2 is truly a great game for being able to kindle such strong emotions in us.
Unfortunately I haven't felt that happy about a final since then, I really miss that feeling, and Mvp's magic. Edit: Well, I did forget Mvp vs Stephano, yeah Mvp has that magic.

Love this article! I'm sad Foxer didn't win a GSL
Also I remembered with fondness MVP's win in game 7 vs squrtle, so epic

MMA vs DRG is obviously the real #1
EDIT: And the only game MVP won in his GSL finals set was the one where he decided to go for a 1-base strat. He couldn't beat MMA straight up and he knew it.

I was wondering when part 2 was coming out. Hell yeah I'm loving it. Thanks!

Didn't cry but I think I might've dislocated my jaw several times

Awesome write up! Totally agree with that #1, prolly the most exhilarating finals I've ever watched with that intense game #7 to top things off!

Squirtle's mental mistakes when he needed to be most clutch really devalues the most important game of the series for me.
Obviously MVP's storyline was incredible and nearly single-handedly overcomes Squirtle's fail.
Conversely, MMA and DRG made their mental mistakes earlier. Game 7 in that series was both players going all out, making no obvious blunders, (I disagree with DRG's strategic choices but given how active the entire game was, it's understandable), and featured two titans reaching their primes. DRG lost his last mining base to a tank that ran by him and he had seen in his vision.
Are you claiming that DRG's either: A) lack of APM/awareness while managing the game-deciding attack and macroing for it or B) decision to not spare resources to save his last remaining base for sending every last bit of his army for a chance at crippling a Terran's production line
is a comparable blunder to
Squirtle's decision to send his army out of his base when MVP's only chance to win the game was with a followup all-in?
Is this really the argument you want to go with?
I would argue that the average Gold-level player recognizes that a failed cheese can only be followed up by an all-in or an incredible gambit (double-expanding/teching to DT-etc.), and that the best course of action is to play safely, get scouting out immediately, and basically everything not what Squirtle chose.
Squirtle's brain-fart was on the level of Fred Brown's pass to James Worthy in '82. It was that big of a mental collapse.

Please, Mvp had another $50,000 final the next day, he had to focus on two at once. I wish they wouldn't have organized it that way, would have made a much better series if there was at least a week or two between the GSL finals and the Blizzcon finals. MMA got off easy
