Best of luck to duckdeok and hoping maybe it is a change you will come back , if not i wish you and i think all the fans good luck , Good luck out there you will always be for us finale
The Champion Of Europe and the one thath really wanted to win and really shown us how a champion must feel proud and crying because its not something eazy to win a big tournament ,I say to you goodbie and good luck ^_^
Oh crap... I think that tweet really means he's going to retire :/ Wow that sucks... After winning WCS EU, I thought we were going to see duckdeok fuckfeok up more people
wow that's pretty surprising to me. I figured he would stay around due to winning WCS EU and making it to Blizzcon. Would not have pegged him as one of the next ones to retire. Best of luck to duckdeok
He said before his WCS EU win that he had lost interest in the game. Winning WCS EU probably gave him the motivation to play the rest of the year but it doesn't bring back his passion for the game if he already lost it.
really sad to hear. Will miss the upsets he caused.

That might be one reason though. Kespa is heavily comitted to Korea, while the money and fans are elsewhere. But I guess its more about achieving a dream and finding no new motivation afterwards to go on.
Hmm, would've thought he'd continue since he finally seems to be finding some success and MVP joined Kespa with SPL on the horizon. Odd time to pull out.
This is kinda unexpected( even with the region lock) but I respect his decision. Maybe he thought it was time to move on before it is too late. Good luck Duckdeok and good luck <3
It would've been more sad if he hadn't done so well at the end of his career. He won WCS Europe and made it to Blizzcon so it's a good idea for him to retire at the top of his career. Lots of players retire without winning a tournament, but finale was one of the fortunate players who was able to do that. He'll definitely be missed though.
so sad. i guess he had done what he set out to do at an early age and decided to get out now before life passes him by. he got to live a pretty cool life for a couple of years good luck and goodbye
Unexpected, but that doesn't mean I'm sad. He cheesed out all of my favorite players so many times, I'm kind of ok with him retiring
Anyway, good luck in your future endeavors Duckdeok. You may not have been my favorite player, but you were definitely ambitious and wanted to succeed. That should take you far in life =)
He won the best WCS Europe season. The one where Grubby beat MVP, to then beat Vortix, I really thought that finally it would be Grubby's first primier win. Duckdeok beat him in a close 3-2. The finals he would meet MC a player I was also sure, Grubby could beat, Duckdeok did it and when he won that finals I became an instant fan and wasn't that let down, he killed Grubby's chances. The most emotional Starcraft event we've had.

Maybe he accomplished his goals in pro-gaming and wants to move on with life. It's much better to leave at 18 than at 25.
ouch. that hurts as i'm a bomber fan.
A career as a pro gamer doesn't really translate into anything in the real world. Imo everyone should be trying to do what Polt is doing, school and part time. We'd probably have longer careers overall and less burnout.
Liked him as a player. I'm guessing he figures that now he has that one big win that he wanted so badly that he's achieved what he wanted to and now wants to move on with the rest of his life.
This is just extremely strange to me. He stuck with it through years of obscurity and when he finally gets tournament wins and fans, he decides to retire. He won roughly quadruple the amount of money in 2013 as he had in 2011 and 2012 combined.
But hey, I am sure he has his reasons and best of luck to him. It's just very sad.
I didn't expect duckdeok to retire. i was really happy that i met him at gamescom but i didn't expecct him to retire so early... he is one of my favourite players :'(
Its like Chuck Norris and babe ruth (pro baseball player from the 1910's-1930's for people who don't know him) Both top of their game and retire because they wanted to retire as champions rather than retire after fading into irrelevance. I can respect that decision.

I don't know how Chuck Norris fits into ... Unless you define the Texas Ranger as the height of TV.
Weird, he made it to Blizzcon and beat Innovation there. Seems like he had the ingredients to keep being successful, and I doubt he would have been knocked out of Europe anytime soon. Sad to hear

I don't find it that strange, actually. I can name a few games where I've set myself a goal, pushed and pushed and pushed to get there through all kinds of adversity (mainly arguments with Mrs Umpteen about time spent in front of the computer), and then when I tick the box - even if there are other, higher goals I could set myself - I'm done. Permanently. It's as though I've made an unspoken bargain with myself, that my reward for all that hard work will be to no longer feel obliged to work hard.
Asheron's Call, for instance, I slogged solo through.. forty? levels of a Creature-First battlemage (which blows because you don't get any teleportation spells or armour buffs for the first forty levels), trained Item Enchantment, teleported somewhere, and then logged out and never went back.
I could easily imagine something similar for DD, having set himself the goal of winning a tournament, plugging away for ages with no results, having that huge emotional rush when it finally happens - and then just letting go. Giving himself permission to stop caring. Monkey off back.
Well that's true. I just would like a more.. outspoken(?) way that a twitter. But an official statement that he will not renew his contract in a few month etc...
Don't know if it's possible or not, but that would be a little bit more professional. But i'm sure we'll get an interview afterwards. I just would like to see the interview, then the tweet.
I was so happy for him when he won WCS I felt so bad for him after that horrible WeRRa drama. I really hope that he has retired not due the problems with sc2 in korea.
I don't get why he retires now, he is at the very peak of his skill. Or perhaps, he knows he had a gigantic luck these past months and that he'll never reproduce such results.
On December 13 2013 06:05 RaClaw wrote: Sorry if its answered already but why he retired?
If I had to speculate, team MVP wanted to focus on proleague and therefore wanted duckdeok to come back to Korea, play in WCS Korea to always be there for proleague. Duckdeok didn't want to do that and decided to call it quits. Or maybe he's decided that since he's 19 soon he wants to go back to studying.
On December 13 2013 06:05 RaClaw wrote: Sorry if its answered already but why he retired?
There was no answer I do not think that this is his case but 2014 will be the 1st year when 150+ korean players have only 3 events to play in, duckdeok seemed to be a notable player who can be send to events abroad so here is another case but for all rookie and young korean players who did not qualify for GSL this situaton is the great reason to retire. I really hope OSL can do 1-2 events but they seem to not care about sc2 at all anymore
Yeah, I really don't understand this. The decision must have come from a personal standpoint rather than a professional one. I'm pretty sure he was doing quite fine on the professional end.
this is rather unfortunate for the scene. I thought it was a great storyline to see a brand new rising star over the course of the year. Him paying his own way to a tourney and then winning it was amazing(i forget which tourney it was but it awesome). Good luck DUCKDUCK!!!!!!
Disappointing considering he beat Innovation in Blizzcon and nice to see a player who also cheeses and all ins a lot with protoss (in the current time) but there are likely reasons we don't know and maybe it's for the best. Best of luck to Duckdeok!
