Full brackets on: LiquipediaAfter much teasing and hinting, Evil Geniuses' Stephano was announced as the final player for HomeStory Cup 8. Stephano returns after retiring in August after his elimination in WCS Europe Season 2, stating he would move on to continue his studies in university. In his StarCraft 2 career of over two years, Stephano won championships at IPL, ESCW, NASL, and WCS, finishing his career with over $230,000 in prize earnings. Due to his stellar tournament record and ability to compete evenly with top Korean players, many consider Stephano to be the best non-Korean player of all-time. Stephano has yet to publically comment on whether or not this is a permanent return to pro-gaming, or merely a one-time comeback. * Replaced NaNiwa

I hope we get Stephano appearances at live events 2-3 times a year where he comes back just to remind everyone he can still randomly be good for a few weeks at a time when he wants to.
|
Clearly he likes the roach burrow speed buff, must be it :p

meh not too exciting tbh. He was an amazing player but unless my memory is failing me, he didn't do too well in WCS EU or something and with being out of practice, unless he's still got the same instincts and play a similar style, he's going to lose in his group(ToD and Leenock advancing if it's 2/4). Either way, good to see back some old blood in SCII!

wonder if he sneak trained. And then suddenly we get something like the roach max that destroys protoss again. We could make stories to scare young Protoss newbs: "Remember lil Toss if you Cannon to often Stephano will rise from the depth of RL and come back"

Oh NOW I realise why Naniwa dropped out
|
i'm kinda doubtful as to how good he is right now. anyways, sick news, glad to see him again, and i hope that he'll at least cast a bunch of games.

AWWWWW YIIISSSSSSSSSS
[That is all]

Propably part of some elaborate ploy by EG. They kept him under the radar and fed him more monster and dirty money to make an even stronger version of Stephano.
|
Welcome back Stephano!!
HSC just got that much more awesome.

He is going to Redbull which is also coming soon (the weekend after Homestory IIRC) so he probably just doesn't want to tire himself out.

I hope he faces Naniwa at some point, after the 'incident' on Meta.

Clearly he is there for the Booze, poker and women. Starcraft is just to amuse him between those three.

Ugh am I the only one not happy to see him back/hope it's a one time thing?
Don't get me wrong, it's not really him that I dislike... He just creates the perfect shit storm for LR threads, his fanboys were always the absolute worst... Between zerg and foreigner tears/rage when he loses to ridiculous over hype and spamming when he wins. I always dreaded going into LR threads when he was playing... They usually ended up being just a step above twitch chat by the end -.-

I kind of agree with this. I saw ToD play very well in I believe challenger for EU (for WCS S1 2014?) as well as IEM qualifiers possibly. I mean, nothing against him for sure, but I didn't think he'd make it as far as he did in whatever he's played recently.
As for Incontrol.. Can't say much since I haven't seen him perform (even on stream since I've probably been busy when he does). I still wouldn't be surprised if either one knocked Stephano out.
In all cases, I will be rooting for my absolute favorite player of all time. If he's actually played at all to prepare for this, I still think he has a good chance at doing well in HSC. I really would love to see him beat TaeJa, who has arguably been my 2nd favorite player. I just hope he enjoys himself and gives the fans a good time once again. Wins are cool and all but fuck that, STEPHANO IS BACK!! (even if only once more)

Well, this is kind of cool. Stephano definitely has one of the biggest personalities in the SC2 scene. I'm a little skeptical about whether he's in good form, though. You have to practice really really hard to be good at Starcraft.
However, his group is relatively easy. He doesn't have any Terrans, and ZvT is arguably the most difficult matchup to keep up with in terms of practice. Tod and InControl are beatable, at least.
|
I am so excited. HSC is always great. The added element of Stephano will make it a must watch for me now.

I guess this is pretty cool, but how much has stephano been playing since his retirement? As exciting as it is to have him back, it'd be just disappointing to see him get crushed every game

HSC is more casual and would be fun even if he loses, so I don't see this as him coming out of retirement or anything. Still really excited and can't wait to watch though.

Well, he did make the Finals in Season 1 Europe. Essentially if he had wone and done a little better in the Season 1 Finals, he had a better year (barely) than Mvp. Horribly copied data from Liquipedia alert:
14 South Korea Mvp Europe 3600 1500 1500 300 100 150 50 30 France Stephano Europe 2025 1000 500 200 25 75 150 75
Before his retirement he was one of the best placed foreigners (in the 17-20th area, I seem to remember). In fact, now that I look at it, the thing is he didn't do amazing on non-WCS championships (the few last of which he didn't attend). Other than that, his year was comparable to Naniwa's.
Source: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/2013_StarCraft_II_World_Championship_Series/Standings
It wasn't his best year, but he was very good. Arguably still the best foreigner until retirement. Up there with Nani/Scarlett.

This is awesome news. However, I'm sure Stephano's studies have taken a good chunk of his time and he's probably been a bit out of practice. Even so, I'm hoping he proves me very wrong.

I'm guessing this is a one off thing for convenience. He was playing like garbage before he retired (compared to what he was back in 2012). I wouldn't expect this to be a fulltime thing unless he can balance both somehow.

Didn't qualify. Maybe IEM Singapore though

Now people can finally stop over hyping overrated foreigners like scarlett and naniwa. If stephano were at blizzcon, he would've made top 4 easy.
|
AWESOME. In a group with iNcontroL and ToD too lol. Should be epic :D
|
Stephano said to Pomf & Thud (french caster) that he could go to some tournament after retiring, such as Ironsquid III if it happen. So, I think HSC is one of the other tournament he'll still play if he's invited. Don't forget that this is more a week-end with other pro to drink & discuss, and he loves both more than SC2.
|
As if I wasn't hyped before. The return of awesome!!! Always thought he might be back!
|
|
So happy, hopefully this isn't a one time thing, always look forward to seeing Stephano in action. Good luck Stephano!

School is tough, and I'm sure he misses the competition and respect he got. In SC2 he was something special, and I'm sure it was nice being on top.

I may be wrong here, but i don't remember him being in the greatest form for the last few months prior to his retirement. I understand he's a great player, but i'm pretty sure that everyone else's willingness to work hard had surpassed his immense talent by the end of his career.
|
If I remember correctly , Stephano goes to med school ?
|
Gogo Stephano!!! I wonder if he had any practice, though..
|
Damn. Really cool for the HSC guys.
Very exciting, great to see someone returning instead of retiring.
|
|
haha, awesome.. damn eh, those are some serious groups.. nice to see jjakji and scarlett attending.

First time watching a HomeStory Cup. Is there an english caster/stream or just german?

Taeja Repeat Hype? It would be pretty cool if he won again, but this year will be much more difficult.
|
|
HSC needed something special since people are feeling sated after Blizzcon. This was it. OMG hype.
|
+550 to make it out of his group. -1500 he is the funniest guy on the caster's couch (intentionally or not).
|
So few terrans again... But otherwise interesting lineup.

gonna be a fun time at HSCVIII now :p

Awesooooome! This actually made me a little emotional. :D

YES. and I thought homestory couln't get any better!
|
Appearances like this every once in a while are really cool. I'll just feel bad for the players if he wins this thing.

Stephano vs iNcontroL?!?!?!? I MUST see this!

stephano has the easiest group.

Either way, good to see back some old blood in SCII!
No offense but... only getting second place in a nailbiter vs Mvp is really, really bad and nothing to talk about(pre hellbat nerf I think?!). In addition the only foreigner that reached the finals overall at every WCS held this year. After that he kinda fell apart, but that was with his retirement already in sight and he seemed kinda meh about it with short glimpses of motivation... Lets see, hope he fires it up again. I'm not really into the "naniwa the foreign hope" thing...not that I hate the guy (how could I, I don't know him) but he's simply seems not to be my kind of dude.
TL;DR : yay... :D

Pretty sure he is practicing.
WHat you do on your free time is not an issue of mine<3

I don't expect the level to be high, but god damn I miss that guy
|
That's great! I hope Stephano wins it all :D <3
|
Hopefully this is the beginning of a full return. Stephano was a shadow of his former self the last months before retirement, hopefully he's ready to kick some ass. Admittedly being Stephano it wouldn't surprise me if he was just there for a good time
|
OMG I am now watching this Homestory Cup. Go stephano!

Roach buff and he is back
Welcome back

Well that added to the hype
|
SICK hope he'll do great he's the best !!!
|
|
|
Pssh. Fake-quitters for the loss. :\ No offence intended to him in reality, but I hope ToD and Leenock get through then. It would be pretty amusing if the two non-korean protosses get through when Leenock and the #1 previous foreign hope were in the group.
|
Like the old Cincinnatus he is comming back when Foreign Republic is in hour of need, to save it from South Korean domination
|
Hah this is awesome. Even if he goes out in the first round I'm sure he'll lend his hand in the usual Homestory shenanigans. Great news
|
|
"I need short holidays." I think it's pretty clear how long this comeback will be.
Anyway, it's awesome he's coming back! I wonder how well he plays now...
|
omg Stephano is back! Yea!!!
*happy eyes in tears* TT

like i said it, he is not a person that can be away from "lights of the stage"... but i didn't think he will return so quickly
anyway, GG and welcome back! even his group is great, with incontrol in it :D
|
And just as I thought "Stephano AND Naniwa under the same roof again??" I realized Naniwa was replaced.
But still nice, will be lots of fun I hope!

Nice, I wonder how much he actually practiced for this.

lol, this is funny. I hated this guy for a lot of his innovations in WoL and for beating a lot of my favorite players despite his carefree attitude... but now that he's coming back, it's making me smile. The scene needs this. Even if he gets swept in the round of 32, it's good to see someone talented return to the game.

And yes, for some reason people didn't like Stephano because he wasn't a robot. I'm happy that there are people with personality out there! Fresh blood is the lifeblood of any community's blood!

Honestly, HSC would have been falling over themselves to accommodate Stephano if it meant he would participate in their tournament. The amount of extra viewership this will bring will be fantastic for them.

I liked it better when he was retired.

I hope Naniwa intentionally dropped out of this tournament.
Regardless, I think Stephano isn't going to dominate. Even he can fall behind on practice (and the metagame).

Wow, this is exciting, I get to see all the things I have been missing since Stephano retired like..
Bored winners' interviews where he talks about how little he cares about whatever event he's at and how he didn't even practice for it...
And hour-long swarm host turtling ZvPs where 60 spine crawlers are made...
On second thought, this isn't exciting at all. ToD/Stephano will make MaNa/FireCake look like a speed race.
|
this is cool, but also showing he dont give a shit about uni and left cause he was waning. hopefully this break helped him

I like how there is one Korean in each group who is the clear favorite to come out.
Also, Leenock must be fucking STOKED on his group hahaha.

Gl broz! Its going to be a WCS Caster massacre

So is Stephano going to be representing EG at HSC and will he rejoin EG if it is a permanent stay?

Stephano I love you !
Stephano forever <3

I can see him coming back on occasion because he's always played well when he didn't have to train 12 hours a day. But I don't see him being a full-time pro again.

I guess I'm gonna watch some SCII. It's been a long time

That's nice to see him play again but he will probably not even win his group
Well maybe he will win he in the most easy group if you remove leenock because I'm sure ''maybe'' he can win vs tod and incontrol in these matchup ( 2 protoss )
2 advance so who know but I'm sure he not even good anymore, I remember he was good during the infestor wol era where he played the style nicely and abused it the best possible.
in wcs he got eliminated then stoped the game, hell im not even sure all the hype he got realy deserved, time to prove the skill he got in guessing !

I agree. Your writing is really concise - I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but if I was you I'd start an SC2 site ala Bleacher Report where somebody googles something shoddily-related like "prize pool homestory 8" and 3 headlines come up at the top all "Everybody is Excited About Stephano's Return But Here's The Top Ten Reasons Why They Shouldn't Be" and then sit back and get rich off of ad clicks. By now you're at Network Solutions shopping for a domain name...remember me.

Uh, good academic performance and crappy SC performance aren't mutually exclusive. Everyone on this forum that goes to College or University can tell you that much.
Except guys like Suppy or Xenocider. Overachieving bastards.
|
That's rediculous guys. The fact is that Stephano can do whatever he wants regardless of what you think you want for him and he can ride off the back of his success for a long time.
He's there to have fun; it looks like he's having a good time and I'm glad to see him playing the game again. It's saddening that the most stable style for him is the most boring, but w/e.
Point is you're in no position to tell him what to do or what is best or optimal for him. Stephano will do whatever the fuck Stephano wants to do.
|
my favorite thing is when people try to tell those who much more intelligent than them, what to do.
"how do you know!"
one person has achieved great success at an activity many wish to do the same at.
one person is a nameless keyboard warrior unable to understand decisions made by those who have proven themselves to be great.
I wonder why.
