A recent KeSPA announcement regarding the release of all Proleague statistics and records (Download as excel spreadsheet) from the tournament's ten year history also contained some information on the start of the next Proleague season.
In the release, KeSPA chairman Jeon Byeong Hyeon is quoted as saying the new Proleague season will start toward the end of November, and also announced the return of short length team tournaments in the spirit of the defunct KeSPA Cup.

KeSPA's President Jun Byung-Hun stated, "Proleague is like a ship that has pulled Korean e-sports throughout the years. As we remember the past 10 years with our fans, we will also prepare for the next season to meet the expectations of our fans. By using the experience gained over the last 10 years, Proleague will return by end of November with a reformed management of the league. We are also planning on reviving the short-term team tournaments that have disappeared since the 2007 KeSPA Cup. We will become an organization that will put in a lot of effort to meet the expectations of our fans".
Woah, this is pretty cool. The release of ALL statistics over proleague's history?? That's a dang lot. Maybe Liquipedia can have some fun with it And this Kespa cup thing, I'd love to watch that!
Fantastic news, I've grown to love SC2 proleague for all the excitement, crazy maps and wild games it brings us. Happy to see its going to be alive and kicking.

Also, I've never watched BW, how hard or easy is it to follow the KeSPA cup with almost 0 knowledge of BW. I know a few units like Dragoons, Goliath, vultures but not much.

Super fun because it seems similar but on the other hand completely different.

Depends on the casters, but it shouldn't be that hard.
This is pretty exciting
I just hope it doesn't open up the can of worms that is "BW vs SC2" and we all just have some good fun =/
Kespa should organize a BW league as well as a separate SC2 league and players should be allowed to participate in both if they want to. That would be the best of all possible worlds.

In a world of unlimited money and broadcast space... or you'd have to scale them both down by a lot

We had that once and it was horrifying.
I'm not talking about a combined league, I mean 2 separate leagues.

Yeah playing two games at the same time on a professional level and being good at both has been proven unfeasible.

Doesn't really matter, you can't practice two separate games at the same time and be really good at both.
Would be absolutely fantastic though if they organized more BW tournaments.
The Kespa Cup being Brood War - if it is more than a rumour - does raise a lot of questions about who will play in the cup. Will it be the same players who play Sc2? How will that affect the games? Or will there be some other solution? Being a team league they can't just put in retired sc2 players like Jangbi or a few Sospa stars but still have to field teams of players which demands a certain level of infrastructure.

Scaling them down is fine. In fact, we can have a full SC2 league with OSL and Proleague but only an OSL tournament for BW with no team league. There would still be enough fans for that.

I'd guess something small that goes more in line with Sospa, hopefully with no one trying to play in both. Pick a game you enjoy (for w/e reasons) and play it well!

Well that's not what I would call scaling down, but rather having everything as it is but adding stuff on top of it. You would probably have to scale down the SC2 stuff in order to make space (broadcast-wise and financially) for a BW league. That's just an assumption of course, because I don't think KeSPA want to throw money around like that and OGN has a pretty full schedule anyway.

Well BW is an RTS, universe and lore are basically the same but that's about it. It's really a very different game from SC2 mechanic- and timing-wise. Especially Protoss and Zerg. But that shoudn't hinder you from understanding most of it.

Very unlikely that they stay, although it's hard to say considering we're in a shift right now. Also it's not only about being able to compete, it's also about whether or not it's worth it for them to invest the time, effort and money to compete.
As for the idea that they're worthy opponents, I think it's a bit early to say. Do we know yet whether or not IM and MVP will compete in ProLeague? Because that could change things up quite a bit. :/
Well, for MVP we still have to wait for the LoL team trade that is going on with Samsung right now and see if there even will be a team MVP afterwards, or if it will all be under Samsung.

Even then, if KHAN acquire MVP or at least some of their better players (think finale, KeeN, DongRaeGu, Sniper) that would provide a big boost to their roster imo, especially with the recent loss of JangBi.

Very true but I don't think it'd harm them at all as long as the entry fee for PL isn't too high. Their players get exposure where they otherwise wouldn't, the practice environment seems to be working great for them considering EGTL's dominance of pretty much every foreign tournament. And of course their improved players could imo compete. Look at Jaedong for example who smashed everybody at the WCS Finals or Taeja and aLive who both topped their groups. Revival winning IEM, HerO winning WCS America, etc.
I think that in the long run they'd profit from being in PL.

Oh definitely, but there will still be a gap that needs to be filled, which MVP wouldn't be a candidate for anymore. That would leave us with Prime or IM as potential PL teams, I suppose.

On September 06 2013 17:16 larse wrote: The KeSPA Cup is said to be Brood War.
The reason for this speculation is that it's a "reunion tournament" of the teams disbanded since 2007, so it's probably Broodwar.
That is correct, but the games will be played on Starcraft 2. The article is saying KESPA will hold more short-term tournaments as they did back in Brood War days.
And now I get why MVP/LGIM/Prime pulled out of GSTL, no point if it prohibits you from playing PL. Just kinda wierd that Soul with no sponsor thinks that esf/gstl can help more with that than kespa.
Can't wait for PL to start again, and even more interestingly to see which teams participate. I hope they don't mix the lol and star 2 broadcast but rather use seperate days.

I'm confused now.
Could we get an actual translation?
I read the article in Korean as I speak extremely fluent Korean and it says nothing about reunion tournament and does not mention playing on BW anywhere in the article. It specifically says KESPA will have more short-term team tournaments that disappeared since the end of KESPA cup back in 2007.
Waxangel also translated it correctly. I don't know why you guys are being misled by someone saying KESPA Cup was played on Brood War.

This is sick. So many people are going to be happy about it. Man, with that stint of bad news, everything seems to be looking up now. There's 3 big non-WCS tournaments in NA in the next 9 months (as well as WCS finals in Canada), and even Proleague is back.
Proleague starts at the end of November. GSTL ends at the end of November. Proleague with all the eSF teams + GOM/SPOTV combined broadcasts inc? Would be nice, but doesn't matter what exactly happens, Proleague still the best league.
That would be kind of cool if they did a little BW tournament during the year next year as long as it doesn't overlap with any of there other events (though with WCS on basically every day im not sure how that's possible). I wonder if they are going to go for a competitive tournament or for a more nostalgia based event.
Really looking forward to Proleague. The new KeSPA seems quite a lot better than the old at PR...
Sidenote: At the bottom of the page I can see all the teams from the last PL, SPOTV, OGN... and GOM. Anyone who understands korean that can explain to me?
Interesting that KeSPA released all these statistics. But as some have noted, the spreadsheet only has real names, not IDs, so it's a little hard to use. So I wrote a script to try to match the names with IDs and TLPD id numbers, and then went through by hand to clean up things like players with the same name and names that weren't matched by my spider.
I just realized... If Proleague's going back to the older shorter leagues, could we maybe squeeze in a BW cup? but that'd probably ruin their practice schedules never mind...

I'm quite interested in the Kespa cup. The link provided to the previous Kespa cup stated there will be amateur Korean teams playing in it? I wonder which clans these will be? There are a number of good KR clans last I checked, maybe we'll see some upsets =D

That was my impression as well. I enjoy shorter leagues because it allows for more teams and players to become involved without breaking the bank. I think this might be the thought behind the decision.
Imo Hybrid SC2/BW cup where players can only specialize in one of the games. 6 games every match, 3 of each SC2/BW, every match played. Rankings/finals seeding based on map score/head to head in the case of tiebreakers, and bo7 ultimate tiebreaker where a game is picked by coin flip, and then losing team picks whether the next game was sc2 or bw, and which map it would be played on.

Casting their league without permission, when they'd already hired English casters, then asking for a job the following season? Not surprised they'd say no.
"Also, Hong "Yellow" Jin-Ho (ex-KT) and Park "Reach" Jung-Suk (ex-KT) holds the record for longest participation in Proleague with 8 years, 3 months, and 29 days." Very impressive imo. Hope the new PL can live up to the old one(in terms of old SCII PL I mean). Maybe less PvP though lol

So I wrote a script to try to match the names with IDs and TLPD id numbers, and then went through by hand to clean up things like players with the same name and names that weren't matched by my spider.
Be warned, I did this pretty quickly, so it's very possible there are still errors. But hopefully someone will find it useful.
this is awesome!
but can this be true? according to your spreadsheet boxer has 56 wins and 70 loses in his pro league history. can this be correct?
edit: okay i cross checked very quickly with TLPD and it seems correct. why did the king has negative pro league statistics? edit2: okay, most of his losses are from 2006 on. and he had his prime before that.. makes sense.

Because Boxer was only successful at the very beginning, back when the professional scene was still developing, when players could only dream of a infrastructure we currently have and had to wear funny looking spacesuits in hope of attracting more viewers.
