Azubu confirmed their plan to fire all Azubu Korea employees and close down Azubu Korea by June 28. The future of SNS, streaming, and media services by Azubu is now unclear, but Team Azubu(SC2) will continue to be supported by German HQ.

The decision to completely withdraw from Korea was solely made by the HQ, and it has not been shared with Team Azubu at all.

Head Coach of Team Azubu "Lim Sungchoon" showed his frustration saying "I never heard about it", "We never got this info, I will have to check".

Those who have been following up with Esports contributor: Azuwho? thread would know that Azubu doesn't really have German HQ, and Azubu was run by Korean Office only. In fact, Azubu is just Korean company registered in Germany. They said they will continue to support Team Azubu, but for how long? 1 day notice to employees for disbanding the company? you gotta be kidding me..

Man those poor oGs guys just do not get a break.

I hope they all find teams.

Also, maybe now Supernova and Violet will stream on Twitch again so we can actually watch them. That Azubu streaming service was abysmal.

Man, this whole AZUBU thing really became a mess once people discovered the scandal with money, and now the Korea division shuts down with no notice?

This really sucks espcially with some of the Azubu players showing some damn good promise/resurgences.

Not surprised. AZUBU sorta had it coming with the scandal. However, isn't Azubu Germany (HQ) involved as well? Or was it just Korea? The OP seems to make it sound like just Azubu Korea was involved...

Because a company that is going under and firing all it's staff can viably fund a team. I read the OP I just don't buy that Azubu can still manage to support the team like they say they will

Read the italic paragraph. It's not even sure that the German HQ exists.

The team is NOT gone. However, knowing that Azubu's real HQ used to be Korean branch and German HQ was just fake stuff, it's only matter of time before something actually happens to the team itself...

As long as the team has other sponsors they might "survive" if they meet the bare minimum (pay the rent, food and travel cost) ... which wont be for long unless they get some new cash. As a sponsor I would get out ASAP though.

Tomorrow's news:

Azubu confirmed their plan to fire all Azubu Germany employees and close down Azubu Germany by June 29. The future of SNS, streaming, and media services by Azubu is now unclear, but Team Azubu(SC2) will continue to be supported by Korean HQ.

The decision to completely withdraw from Germany was solely made by the HQ, and it has not been shared with Team Azubu at all.

Head Coach of Team Azubu "Lim Sungchoon" showed his frustration saying "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength".

SuperNova just got out of a group of death quite handily, someone needs to pick him up. Symbol and Sleep would be good pick ups too since they are already in the league.

I don't understand why everyone is talking about the Azubu SC2 squad, doesn't it clearly state in the OP that they will still be supported?

You know how TLers don't properly read threads.

Because a company that is going under and firing all it's staff can viably fund a team. I read the OP I just don't buy that Azubu can still manage to support the team like they say they will

As long as the team has other sponsors they might "survive" if they meet the bare minimum (pay the rent, food and travel cost) ... which wont be for long unless they get some new cash. As a sponsor I would get out ASAP though.

Rent/Food/Travel still add up to a considerable amount of budget. Also, hardly any of the players will want to stay without salary. I think their SC2 team will probably disband soon.

The duality between GSTL and SPL is neat. 8 teams each, with one team being a partnership between foreign owned organizations (Axiom-Acer/EG-TL) and another (in eSF's case potentially) lacking sponsorship (AZUBU/Team 8).

That kinda contradicts this post (from the Azuwho? thread) which probably is the reason why people are saying that the office does not exist:

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=406145&currentpage=12#233

Just for the fun of it I might even check up on that Clauf office address over the next few days ... to see if there is a nameplate to be found somewhere and so on. The pitiful attempt at a webpage really makes it seem like a waste of time 99,9999% though.

I fail to understand how a team that doesn't have any income, participate in leagues like GSTL.
More importantly, how do they have a team house in Korea at all + bills + food + players.

because when I google 'team 8' the first result is some naruto crap anyway. Why not make it any more annoying for SC2 by throwing in bleach results when you google too?

This is pretty hilarious, Azubu is one of the best mysteries we have in eSports and it's ridiculously entertaining to watch how it pans out. *gets the popcorn*.

Feel bad for the SC2 dudes, but I have to be selfish and say I can't wait until it blows over and one of them releases a statement on the team, hopefully unveiling even more delicious shady business practices for the creme de la creme.

How did Anzubu get so large and no one actually found out the origins of the team?

Not surprising, and I wouldn't be shocked if the team got disbanded too.

The Korean scene is running 2 different leagues with both having their own teams and players when the viewership can barely support one. It's a bloated mess, time to clean up.

Funny thing is....it seems like this journalist who wrote the original article got insider news from Azubu [former] employee. Therefore he was able to write exclusive+breaking news this morning.

on his twitter (https://twitter.com/sanwang78)

he wrote few interesting tweets: "There's more than two company that's tied to Azubu. I'm gonna look into them today"
"I learned many stories that are hilarious, non-sense, and shitty, but they are not appropriate to write in the article"
"(replying to someone)it isn't paper company because the company did exist, but a lot of rumors turned out to be true"

InCa is the more obvious choice for a hitman than San.... No wonder Azubu is going under, poor staffing decisions.

Team Azubu(SC2) will continue to be supported by German HQ.

The bolded part is what makes be feel that they are genuinely going to keep supporting the team.
Not worried at all, with SuperNovas performance yesterday they are looking stronger than ever.

I hope the SC2 squad is allowed to line up deals with other teams for when the Azubutanic finally sinks. Ain't nowhere to go from here but down.

Inca, Vines, and Top must feel cursed. First OGS, then Apex, now Azubu. Supernova and Nada are also ex-OGS.

Also, Nada was in this organization?

Really got to feel sorry for the players here. All this worry about what's going on with the "company" sponsoring their team takes away from the focus they could be putting into practicing. If Azubu really does turn out to be handling money even dirtier than EG's, I just hope the SC2 players don't have to attend court hearings or something \/___\/

You mean like pulling their players out of their trip to Dreamhack at the last minute? Doesn't sound like support to me.

Who knows what is going on behind the scenes.

It took till the death of Own3d to find out that they weren't paying a lot of their streamers, could be the same going on here but they are being quiet about it.

The company does not exist any more. How do you think "they" will support a team? Money has to come from somewhere and if the players winnings would be enough there would hardly be the need for a team sponsor.

Company barely have existed before, and who the f*ck knows where the money came from in the first place... Their closing Korean HQ will probably do nothing bad or anything since it had no relevance to them from money perspective.

I wonder if all those "Detective" news on KR TV stations motivated them to move... I just wonder tho.

I'd actually say Violet is more EG material than Symbol. He speaks English, is well liked in the foreign scene, has personality, and plays in WCS AM. Unfortunately, EG seems to be all Korean'd out at the moment.

This really needs to happen. I assume Team 8 will be disbanded if this happens and they will go to other teams. Also:

Apparently Shuttle said on his Afreeca stream that Calm is going to the army soon because STX is about to disband We might not get a Proleague next season if it's true because Team 8 will probably disband as well and EG-TL's participation next season isn't decided.

So maybe STX will be gone too. Lots of players are going to be available, enough to make the other teams more competitive (CJ, EGTL, Prime and sometimes FXO being the weaker teams that could use new players).

KT
SKT
Woongjin
Samsung
CJ
EGTL
IM
ST
MVP
Prime
FXO
AxA + whatever happens to Azubu?

This rally needs to happen.

I just hate seeing all these talented players get dropped again. I know many of them aren't top Koreans anymore, but I still think they deserve to be on a good team.
How many more times can players like San,TOP, and Genius get dropped before they decide to just give up. Azubu sounds like the only team that was even interested in picking up Genius.
I hope there can be a good ending to this somehow, but it doesn't look to good.

t'is a great team with a special identity. Hope it does not finally get dismantled and players are picked up again by random teams. Surely some computer company out there that can invest in a team.

Yawn.. So long as the people of NSHS don't want to destroy their own team, they will outlive teams like SlayerS, TSL, etc.
STX and oGs are sad exceptions.

Honestly, I can't see STX disbanding right now, whereas I could see oGs disbanding b4 they actually did. SlayerS and TSL was just a massive amount of immaturity. People showing that regardless of resources and skill, the lack of professionalism is enough to destroy teams.

I wouldn't be surprised of NSHS is somehow alive later on, but having KT SKT CJ and NSHS together in pro league won't happen because I don't NSHS will ever gain enough momentum to get that high up.

Woah, STX disbanding would come as a complete surprise. Not to mention they have some really good players. Honestly I would love to see LG/Rebull set up their support like how Kespa teams does. Then maybe we get them in PL and players from T8 and STX (if they indeed disband) can be distributed.

lol, i've never understood this theory. So the criminals setup a team to launder money? How exactly would that work? Do they have people on the payroll of said organization who don't really do anything? They'd still have to explain where the money came from to pay them no?

Looks like someone is doing a stellar job over there. Lets see who will bend over CLG next.
Well they are a team of really stupid kids with big egos, cant say i fell sorry for them.

Anyways, i am not worried for the solid players on Azubu, they will find new teams if need be. The other ones might have to consider doing something else or try harder. And if we are lucky, maybe NaDa will stop insulting his former fans by prostituting himself for anyone with money.

I guess i am more frustrated by this Azubu stuff than i thought. Good luck to Violet, such a cool guy.

Wait, STX is gonna disband? This is big news to me. Even if it's just Shuttle that said it, why has it not been picked up by anyone else on the forum? Talk like that should have blown up and gotten hundreds of posts.

Because honestly, Azubu getting some consequences as a result of their shady business practices isn't as much of a surprise as STX disbanding. That's the biggest news for me from this topic.

It's just a rumor, but with it coming from a progamer like Shuttle (and not the one on Clarity Gaming) there must be more to it than just hearsay. There might be trouble, but it might not necessarily mean disbandment.

They had 2 teams (Blaze and Frost) but they were picked up by CJ Entus some months ago after their contracts with AZUBU ended.

Now they only have the SC2 team.

Simplified explanation: All large companies have large amounts of debt. The larger the company the more their debt, usually. Which is fine as long as their revenue streams are stable and they can pay off that debt in the terms agreed upon. Companies acquire debt because if they know they can pay it off and still make a profit, they can use that debt to expand/improve/R&D/buy stuff. That's why you will almost always find long term debts on balance sheets. Having debt is not a direct indication of whether a company is healthy or not. More important is how long that debt has been around, if it's growing along with useful assets, and if they are paying it off on schedule. Of course it's more complicated than that but I wanted to explain it in simple terms.

That's not the problem, they bankrupted themselves long time ago. With this kind of company, a small esports team is not at urgency to disband. They still have plenty of business running even when they bankrupted themselves.

indeed. i probably should have included more information in my first post about their debt, but what you mentioned about large companies such as STX is absolutely true. however, it seems that STX took on too much risk and that combined with the 2008 financial crisis resulted in the bankruptcy of STX Pan Ocean.

STX’s former and current officials said the main reason for current problems is that the group spent a great chunk of advance payments from clients in takeover deals without leaving some as operating capital.
“Mr. Kang should have put aside some money to continue to build ships during the downturn and adopted warnings raised by his aides and the market,” a current STX official said. “What stopped him was snowballed debts, after all.”

If you look at the financial report of say, Manchester UTD, you'd see they have a gross debt of about 430 million GBP as of March 31. The clubs commercial revenue increased by 27.9%, while their debt only by 13.2% in the last nine months. They still owe a shitton of money, but are on the right track of paying up on time.
If STX has 9 million USD debt in the world of freight shipping that is like having two unpaid beers on your tab at your local watering hole. Also if we don't have any other info regarding their revenue streams, cash flow, prices of shares this data alone doesn't mean much.

edit: Ooops, got confused by the number of zeroes . 9 billion is quite significant.

The team will remain sure but when no one pays for anything anymore it won't for long.

Winning GSTL would be nice for them but I doubt it would bring in a sponsor to support a team that big.

I could see them changing up some of their Koreans for pro league next season, maybe pick up Symbol/Supernova or some of the esf guys when the trade lock ends.

That's what EG does though, but usually they swoop in when a player peaks and we all know how that turns out. In either case, there are a lot of good Koreans for the taking now so it just makes sense to pick up a select few.

Examples of that recently? Suppy was playing worse off EG then on EG. Xenocider I don't know much about, although I wouldn't consider him at his peak or really, really good. aLive and Oz were pickups that occurred far after their "peak" and were picked up for Proleague. Revival? I wouldn't really say at his peak and he has only been playing better since being under coach Park. Jaedong? Jaedong was not showing much/any promise in SC2 when EG picked him up, although in EG's Korean team house and under coach Park Jaedong has greatly, greatly improved.

OT: This is pretty shitty news, although I'm glad it has stopped now as opposed to chancing the players losing more money.

Obviously I'm talking about the old credo. aLive and Oz were sent to purgatory and if you think they peaked prior to that I think you have another thing coming. More like unfulfilled potential especially considering they aren't new to Western teams, so there are a lot of question marks still there. Jaedong would have improved by himself with or without someone looking over his shoulder. Sorry that's the type of player he is. He used to work just as hard as Flash. Ask anyone in the scene back then and they'll tell you Flash and Jaedong were the two hardest working players in BW.

Another team falls apart due to bad management/scam artists. I have just been reading Maddelisk's blog about Absolute Legends, and I know Dimaga got screwed by his old team too. Considering all the players who are not getting paid as promised it is amazing that EG gets such a hard time here on TL. Last I heard EG pay their players well and on time. That seems pretty basic but unfortunately that seems something that some teams don't manage to accomplish.

Very sad to hear about SC2 Pros getting ripped off by their employers. It happens way too often too.

For their seemingly Swedish-only sister brand, yes. If they add koreans it would most likely be under the EG banner.

You wouldn't call aLive's peak so far his win at IPL4?

Oz, maybe not, although he and aLive were picked up as a result of Fnatic ending all things to do with Korea, not because they were at their peak and because EG wanted to snipe some of them.

Furthermore your admittance that both of them haven't peaked refutes your earlier point that EG just picks up players at their peak and then causes them or correlates with them becoming worse. You're contradicting yourself.

Well yeah he would have improved by continuing to play, although once again EG did not at all pick him up at the peak of his SC2 play and comparing him to Flash at the time, Flash was playing much, much better.

Very sad to hear about SC2 Pros getting ripped off by their employers. It happens way too often too.

It just seems that a majority or a very vocal minority of SC2 fans despise success. The vast majority of the /r/Starcrat community jumped on the chance to donate to Root so that they could open a team house, although everyone hates EG for owning a team house in Arizona and in Korea. It's rather appalling that people give shit to EG when they are one of the few Western organizations that hasn't folded, but flourished as of recent.

You make it sound like this is some sort of revelation when its been happening to foreigners since the BW days considering guys paid players out of their pocket and we didn't really have any sponsors until much later and even back then it was practically nothing that we got from them. Some things don't change fast. This is familiar territory for them.

I don't call IPL anything a peak the same way I don't consider HerO's back-to-back wins of DH Winter a peak. It's great they have a few wins under their belt but I don't think anyone would consider them to be at the top of the hill after those victories. You get what I am saying? Heck, I don't even consider a few GSL wins to be that extravagant anymore considering the game is changing a lot faster with the patch work compared to the map changes/diversity/expansions/patches in BW. Its going by much quicker and we have yet to see what will happen to players like Bogus. There's a lot of variables in play so it makes it much more complicated. From what I've seen of aLive in PL I think he is capable of playing better.

Oh and I just read your last blurb. I thought I was pretty clear in my first sentence when I said the old credo? It's not like I was born yesterday so I know the EG timeline pretty well bud. I don't see where you have a bone with that. I certainly don't avoid history. You want to defend it and that's all fine and dandy but don't avoid history and I don't get where your going with this success. If you mean pushing content then the EG brand certainly does that. As for all these voices you hear and they hear. Well, sometimes it's best to tune out all those voices altogether so you can focus on the actual goal at hand. It's all about perception of the given brand. Why do you think Alex opened another brand? Why do you think they invited TL into the PL fold other than the fact they needed more talent to compete in the PL? Come on now. Some things just make sense and I've seen a lot more positive remarks with regards to EG compared to a year ago. This isn't guess work.

Nazgul had hundreds of chances to poach Genius or Supernova. In fact, considering the fact that Genius asked specifically to join Liquid and Supernova was staying with Jinro and Huk, I'm surprised we didn't see any of them join Liquid.

TL probably didn't have enough to pay for them, even if Genius and Supernova aren't top dollar players, the amount of money that you'd have to invest not just in them, but with them (translators, korean house? etc.) is huge.

I don't know about that. Just because they were oGs doesn't mean TL is going to go right after them. I'm sure Victor has his reasons and it's none of our business either.

This so much. I never understood why Liquid didn't pick up SuperNova. He was living with HerO, Jinro, HuK, HayprO and TLO. He had so much potential. And instead he joined mTw. Sigh.

i don't see how you could think that they were legitmate, the company was traced back to two financial criminals, they didn't have an office where they said they did, shit like the players not being notified of major changes to the organization until they read it on websites like TL...

Well this put a bit of a smile on my face in an otherwise very disappointing moment.

Like, seriously Azubu, what the fuck? You just dropped a crapload of people cause you felt like it, without even consulting them so that they could have time to transition. I understand businesses aim to make money first, but sometimes the way businesses go around screwing people on a moment's notice is so bad. It's like when IPL was cancelled out of nowhere cause someone bought them out and found out it wasn't profitable to hold the tournament.

Worry not! I was joking about EG based on their Geniuses Falling video. The joke seems to be more popular on Reddit, huh.

This guy... You think people give EG shit because they have team houses or because they are rich? Its more about their view on the whole esports scene, the people associated with EG and buying popular/successful players. I also find their extremly aggressive marketing absolutely disgusting. If they were in that much debt I feel like the gaming team would be the first thing to go... I was always under the impression that the big korean powerhouses are somewhat autonomous from the actual companies that have their name on the jersey. I'm sure there's some money involved somewhere, but at some point it becomes self-sustaining...right?

9 billion of debt isn't terrible when you make 23 billion in revenues per year.

That's a lot like accenture PLC, SONY corp, etc.

Let me put it this way. The Azubu brand has become useless. You literally cant do anything with it, you have a brand that is being investigated for a white-collar crime. Why in gods name would you keep pouring money into it? Maybe kelby has a pot left from the goo' ol' days but you can bet you ass it is only a matter of Time till someone picks up on it. Do you really think they will get a longer notice than the korean office did?

If they were in that much debt I feel like the gaming team would be the first thing to go... I was always under the impression that the big korean powerhouses are somewhat autonomous from the actual companies that have their name on the jersey. I'm sure there's some money involved somewhere, but at some point it becomes self-sustaining...right?

9 billion of debt isn't terrible when you make 23 billion in revenues per year.

That's a lot like accenture PLC, SONY corp, etc.

Is it actually debt or just YoY operating loss? If it's one, what's the other -- I've never actually read up an article about it but I know they were one of the chaebols which were quite hit by the recession / eco. crisis because of their nature of business.

How would a gaming team become self-sustaining? I don't think there is actually enough prize money out there for a team to be able to support itself off of. The money would be coming from the sponsors of which STX would be one. It can also be assumed that STX is putting the most money towards the team since the team is called STX, otherwise if one of their other sponsors were putting forth the majority of the money wouldn't they want the team named after them? The team may be able to re-form under the same sponsors they had as STX with a new major backer but I don't think a gaming team can really become self sustaining.

NaDa should seriously just go into male modelling.

My other thought is that NaDa and Iris might be able to join a KeSPA team as coaches.

As in the pro gaming team would go bye bye. KeSPA is backed by the Government; however, looking back at the past. It doesn't really look good for the team like many of the other teams that went adrift.

Which means you'd think they would cut the gaming team almost instantly, but they haven't yet.

that doesn't mean that much, you have to do a inter-industry analysis to determine whether it is really in trouble or not.
high debt to equity can also be a feature of this high operating cost for trading companies as well

STX is a massive corp, that ocean liner part of STX maybe operating at a loss but the company as a whole I doubt is.

Furthermore, very few of us here are qualified to speculate at what is occurring inside the sphere of the company. Few of us understand their economic market and the market outlook for STX and because of that it is really a bad idea to start taking blind shots in the dark about the future of the gaming team sponsored by STX.

It's not publicly listed in a foreign exchange like an NYSE so getting good information would be difficult. That said, they have some financials floating around.

http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=011810.KS
http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/snapshot/snapshot.asp?ticker=011810:KS

It's not a pretty picture since they lost far more money in the last 12 months than what their company is currently worth.

Relevant to the tangent this thread has taken in the past page or two, STX Corp recently filed Chapter 15, Title 11 in the United States, which is similar to filing Chapter 11 for domestic companies.
Obviously, STX is Korean-held so they were forced to use Chapter 15 instead of 11. On that note, its (Korean) creditors may take majority shareholder because nobody was willing to buy up STX PanOcean's debt, so that subsidiary, along with the company itself, may soon be out of chaebol family's ownership.
Financial downturn during the first quarter of 2013 was caused by a global decline in demand for shipping in conjunction with the financial strain of an overabundance of unused ships.

I'm sure the rightful owners of the money care a great deal. Who knows maybe that douchebag owner of Azubu is Korea's version of Bernard Madoff, and he swindled retirement/investment funds from thousands of hard working people. But hey who cares right?

BTW mind giving me your bank account # so I can rob you blind? I'll donate 2% of it to esports.

It was such a big story that once someone brought it up the thread about Azubu basically became about STX Soul.

I'm a little confused on how their head coach couldn't know anything.. I mean, this is something that practically everyone knew about already. All that was lacking was an official confirmation.

So is this the reason why Azubu picked a bunch of washed up, has beens? Because they didnt really care which players they chose as long as they could launder money while creating this "We are helping Esports grow! " image to the community?

With all these organizations collapsing, I wonder if an SC2 team is no longer a good decision to invest money into anymore...

I still don't understand why someone would make a company to launder money via esports. It seems like one of the worst ways to do it, everything is done over the internet, the people who watch esports would be mostly young (I assume) and curious, and scandals get rooted out so quickly. Oh well.

I hate the see any pro team go under. This has been a solid team for quite a while now. I'm sure there is a lot more to it than what we know but maybe this is for the best. I wish all the players good luck in finding new teams and hopefully all of the guys in the 'background' can find work as well.

I don't think their SC2 teams are the root of their problems, so much as the bad business decisions (Azubu) and the downturn in the profitability of their primary business due to the economic climate (STX). Corporations like SK Telecom are much more stable and their long running commitment to e-Sports probably wouldn't be the case if those teams weren't making money, so I think we'll be fine.

I have to see I'm a little concerned for these guys, when Azubu came along I thought they looked legit and will become a big player in the industry. I hope at the very least the sc2 team continues.

pretty glad to see shady business gone from my industry. sorry for the lol/dota derailment but the injection of money into esports (aka ogn lol champions, then herpderp buy both teams) is no way to sustain an industry. glad they are gone- part of the reason why that game went to...well... what it is today.

go back to our roots of slow and steady growth, with passion driving teams (aka liquid, mouz, sk). fuck people who try to buy us.

I don't understand why everyone is talking about the Azubu SC2 squad, doesn't it clearly state in the OP that they will still be supported?

Because if the company shut down with 1 days notice, it's clear the team could be shut down without much if any notice.

Karont3 cant really be compared to Azubu ... one lost its best two players and became a non-team due to mass and the other had its name-giving sponsor shut down due to mismanagement and shady dealings.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in years to come. I just hope a lot of the "money speculators" have a inner beating eSport heart, though it seems doubtful, as shrewd businessmen have no heart and therefore the closest thing to nihilists.

Just seems odd that the players left would still play under the Azubu banner if they aren't receiving any compensation.

Results-wise Azubu has still be doing pretty good. Symbol is consistently making deep runs in Korean Starleagues, and now Supernova just made a Ro8 in OSL. San just made the finals of ASUS as well.

They'd be interesting pickups

Man those poor oGs guys just do not get a break.

I hope they all find teams.

Also, maybe now Supernova and Violet will stream on Twitch again so we can actually watch them. That Azubu streaming service was abysmal.

Yeah I feel like NaDa hasn't had it easy for a while. And that they all find new teams (or other positions).

Inca will never be forgotten, every time we see (or don't see) DT's he will be in our hearts.

Maybe we should construct some sort of shrine dedicated to him.

is that an informed statement or just speculation?

Nobody is sponsoring the team anymore.
