As always, this is a highlight that covers all the important info from an interview of Woongjin coach Won Ryu. He was formerly a SlayerS coach and was hired by Woongjin to help their BW players to transition into SC2 in May 2012. You can see that he is the first one run into MMA's booth back in 2011 when MMA won his championship: [image loading]

Interview:
This was before WCS Season 1 Finals.

Introduction

In SPL, Woongjin Stars is now the top 1 team that surpasses the other team far away. But Woongjin Stars used to be a team that always starts a losing streak when SPL comes to the later half every year. But now they are different.

It's coach Won Ryu who created this success.

Q: "When Soulkey won the championship, did many people come to congratulate you?"

Won Ryu: "No. Everyone congratulated Soulkey. It's not just me who make this happen. There are hard works from manager and the office as well (smile)."

About Soulkey's GSL champion:

"During our practice, manager Lee Jae Kyun came to inspect, I promised him that Soulkey will win the championship. But when the match started, we took a 0-3. I was pretty embarrassing to face the manager."

"Game 4 and 5's strategies are according to our plan."

"We have also predicted the patterns of Innovation's medivac drop. His patter is like this: When his main force is moving out, Zerg players' main army would normally follow to the relevant location. Then Innovation will load up some forces and drop to the other nearest location. In the last game, Soulkey even sent zerglings to scout the dropships. He saw those three medivac and sent muta to defend. [...] Innovation forgot to repare the third. And Soulkey found it and killed it. This was the decisive point."

"I didn't cry after Soulkey won. If game 7 was more difficult then I may cry. I thought game 7 was an easy win. But it was back then when Zero decided to become a pro from a semi-pro, I cried alone in my home. [They are good friend before they joined Woongjin.]"

About Soulkey's practice partner:

"I invited MMA to help Soulkey prepare But MMA said his strength declined, so he refused to help. I said just come and help, even it's only 1%. [...] The SPL game that Soulkey lost to Innovation a few days before finals, that actually helped a lot. MMA told Soulkey the solution. There are many details of the solution that even I didn't notice. But MMA covered all of it. [...] MMA even watched Innovation's VOD, and tried to play as similar as Innovation."

About WCS Season 1 Finals:

"To be honest, sOs is a 'casual' player. He has no ambition. He plays just the right amount of games and carries little pressure. But after Ro8, he seems changed out from this mode. Soulkey, like sOs, also increased 2 hours practice time everyday. The team doesn't give them much practice time for individual leagues, but they utilize their spare time to practice very hard."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below is an interview of STX Soul Manager Kim Min Ki.

This is after WCS Season 1 FInals.

STX Soul Manager Kim Min Ki: "The era of Innovation will continue."

"I'm very moved. This is a great scene. I was worried that what if Innovation experienced another big comeback from sOs. I cannot be relaxed until the last moment. The game 4's tempests made me very worry. But my coach said that Tempest's counter is not viking but ground army. And when I saw Innovation sitting in his booth but was able to gradually find this solution, I was excited."

"Innovation is still not perfect. He also felt his weaknesses. But it was this attitude that made him the champion. If it was the other players, the comeback in GSL finals would have hit them way too hard. But Innovation saw that just as his weakness and went right back into practice."

"After today, the era of Innovation will continue. He will not relax. He will be as hardworking as before. Nothing can shake his status. Everyone wants to be perfect. It's very difficult. But Innovation is close to perfection. We can have high expectations for him."

I assume 'casual' means he practices the bare minimum 10 hours a day.

lol wtf. I wonder what is the criteria they use in defining a casual player. Probably if you play less than 8 hours a day you are considered a casual.

he defines it right there. "No ambition." So in a nutshell treats SC2 as a job and not as a sport/competition.
Which is the opposite of casual, but i still think it's pretty clear what he meant.

I think by no ambition he means sOs isnt going into tournaments expecting to win it all.

I think the definition of "casual" for the coach is not related to the hours of practice, but the fact that Sos don't care that much about winning or losing.

For example Stephano is that kind of "casual" : he just don't really care about results, he play his game and then go home. The complete opposite is Naniwa, who really want to be recognized as one of the best and get very angry when he lose.

Oh, wow, Soulkey's win over Innovation must have made MMA feel really good.

Some remarkably candid answers, thanks for providing this interview. (and translating it, if you did that)

MMA may not be in his prime anymore, maybe his passion lost, but if there's one guy who can analyze and explain plays I'd make the assumption it would be him. Honest about his skill, honest about the position and real about everything. I always thought he was a standup guy in interviews and I still think, one day, we'll see him at the top. Glad he could help Soulkey.

I honestly think mma was never amazingly good. His builds were insane though(prob won's influence). Proxy tanks vs MVP in GSL finals was nuts. His decline seems to coincide with ryu won leaving slayers prior to them disbanding.

Oh yeah, MMA is totally a scrub player who just got lucky. I bet if Ryu Won was your coach, you could have won 2 GSLs as well right?

Look, having a great coach is great, but I'm tired of all these people saying that MMA would be nothing with Ryu Won. It's just like saying that Life would be a nobody if the queen patch had never happened right? After all, Life only found success after the queen patch, and before he was a nobody on Zenex, right? Wrong.

Ryu Won is a great coach, but MMA is also one of the best players of WoL. It wasn't Ryu Won in the booth who beat Mvp in Game 9 of the GSTL finals, it wasn't Ryu Won in the booth who beat DRG in Game 9 of the next GSTL finals. It wasn't Ryu Won in the booth during Game 7 of the Blizzard Cup. It was MMA. Give credit where credit it due

You're forgetting TvZ. MMA was once invincible in TvZ purely due to his multi-tasking and positioning. It's not just the builds.

I didn't link casual with the ambition part. Well, he is doing very well considering he is closely matched with the best zerg atm.

But that goes against the fans preconceived bias that Flash is the only one that could have done any help.

I think you're completely right given the context of the interview. Maybe some Korean speakers can confirm the connotation? Though it kind of clashes with how Soulkey said that sOs has nerve issues, you'd think he wouldn't have that problem if that was what his mentality is like. Then again, on that huge ass stage, everything probably changes.

MMA got baneling busted way, too, fucking, much (or that 7-9 roach pressure that would ALWAYS,99.9% do critical dmg) in WOL

Most frustrating part of being an MMA fan, so funny that Soulkey trained with MMA, I can totally see it now after watching the finals

p.s. Somebody tell Artosis that Soulkey trained mainly with MMA and it'll shut him up about the MMA hate

Casual, in asian talk, is just doing the regular routine. Like practicing the bare minimum, whatever the team requires.

MMA told Soulkey the solution. There are many details of the solution that even I didn't notice. But MMA covered all of it. [...] MMA even watched Innovation's VOD, and tried to play as similar as Innovation."

Maybe this is what he means "casual"----he is just a casual casual man smiling and happy and not be serious to all things

It doesn't help that MMA was basically winning because he was simply better at multitasking than anyone else (especially TvZ). Not that I'm trying to take anything away from him, but his strength was always his multitasking, not his builds or strategy or whatever. It wasn't even his micro like MKP, although he was really good at micro; it was that he played a style that Zerg players simply didn't know how to beat. But then everyone started doing drops, even Protoss players like Hero, and Zergs gradually got better at dealing with them through better Overlord spread, better Creep spread, and liberal use of static defense. Now that people have accustomed to that and there isn't such a gap in mechanics, he's fallen by the wayside. His style just isn't very good anymore, and his builds aren't particularly innovative. It has nothing to do with hate, honestly.

Well this interview confirmed that Soulkey knew exactly what he was doing when he left the Mutas in his WCS Korea win against Bogus. Medivac patterns memorised, zerglings to scout dropship etc. etc.

That was kind of what I was thinking, but you need to find a balance I guess. Better to see him like that than to see him go MKP style

Stephano is a casual player.
The korean definition of casual is more harsh than TLO practice regimen.

lolol. sos is a casual player with no ambition. well at least the coach said he changed after ro8, even adding 2 hours to his regular practice time. hopefully that means he's more serious now.

about mma, i agree. even though he has a fallen off quite a bit, he still has a lot more experience than soulkey playing the game. he will have good insights at least.

Casual gamers for koreans : Someone who practice 10 hours a day and make it to the final of the WCS season.

After reading that MMA initially thought he couldn't be a help to Soulkey, but eventually worked out all the kinks for him and even tried to imitate Innovation's playstyle (something that should be considered impossible), I have to say that is deserving of so much respect. If that's the kind of person who won MLG Columbus, GSL October and 2011 Blizzard Cup, I hope he can find it in him to gain his former strength.

Them old SlayerS connections.

And the STX head coach is so happy, like the proud father of INnoVation. Nice success story for STX as well.

To say that the time MMA was at the top was mainly due to his multitasking and because other players hadn't caught on in mechanics is pretty ignorant imo. His superior multitasking was a bonus and more like an icing on the cake in otherwise a player who was a complete package be his micro or macro. And also that the TvZ he played wasnt any different from what everyone else was doing except that he played that style to its most efficient form.

The reason for his decline is I believe a combination of factors. Slayers drama and the loss of faith to his eventual conflict with Boxer, his declining passion for the game, the game evolving further towards the macro route with passive but greedy play to the point that TvZ was BL-Infestor, all these factors contributed to his loss. Even during those times he was playing pretty well as his games against Gumiho in GSTL finals and against Mvp in Code S Group of Death would point out, that it was more of a confidence thing and lack of passion thing which lead to him losing a lot.

And as far as falling to the wayside is concerned, post that period of loss he has been looking better and better in Hots and things are looking up. He has fully transitioned to Mech TvT post his Loss to Strelok in WCS EU. He also all killed Root yesterday!
