Meh. He can still play SC2 in collage and stream. Maybe make a Dreamhack or something during summer vacation

For real. EG went from the most interesting foreign team to one of the least interesting in the last few days.

He was supposed to retire in 2011, but his sucess and fans made him continue for another year.
He was then supposed to retire in 2012, but again he reconsidered.

This news should not be surprising. He gave relatively firm timetables for his previous plans for retirement, and each time he extended his progaming career, the chances of him retiring the summer after only increased.

I can also see Thorzain retiring this year or next year since I recall him saying in an interview that he also has wishes to go back to school sometime.

Yeah, this is true, he says this every year. Let's see if he can make a breakthrough in hots for wins or not. Currently he isn't playing as well as he did in WoL so for him, it begins to make more sense to drop the game and move on to school considering he isn't making as much money as he used to from winnings.

I imagine that each year, he gave himself an ultimatum that unless he was making spectacular results, he would retire from the game, be it in 2011, 2012, or this year. Funnily enough, he did end up making the spectacular results in 2011 and 2012 needed to change his mind about retirement. Nevertheless, school seemed to always be part of his future plans while progaming seemed to always be a temporary venture for him. His career was always on a shorter timer than those of other progamers, and retirement was always a question of when, not if.

Yeah sure it's boring for us that he's leaving professional SC2 but come on if you are truly his fans you should probably support this, he doesn't seem to enjoy it at all anymore, in most of his recent interviews he have had a kinda negative attitude to his current gaming career.

I don't think anyone should invest to much effort or time into the pro scene, especially with SC2. I think it's smart of him to chose the studies but of course not as fun for us.

Can't he keep playing and go to school at the same time? Like what Suppy is doing.

no offense to Suppy, But he comes from a wealthy America Asian family and is doing something different in his studies and is quite catered to, so has the money and time for both school and sc2. Most of Suppy's college fee's are paid by his parents.

Where as Stephano is going into the medical field, being a med student gives you 100% no time for anything else, one of the most time consuming things to go to school for and start a career in.

So I'm glad Stephano is thinking about his long term future, Pro gamer is not long term thing you can do, Unless you are Korean on a Kespa team and you are the best of the best.

216k + over 100k per year for salary, that shouldn't be too bad for a student. Well not enough to pay for med school but still help quite a lot.
Gl hf to him, truly one of the best foreigner even though I never like his fanboys, still respect.

// time for EG to add a strong foreigner with special personality

In France, school is free, you know.
Except for business School, and few others, but med school, or something like is.

as for EG's offer, its no coincidence that they cut idra and dont give stephano a good enough offer to stay. EG is definately cutting back on their sc2 budget

lol no. It's a complete coincidence since those two events have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

well, in idra's talk about his event, he said that he felt the money he was getting paid was a motivating factor, and it wasnt JUST because of sponsor pressure, he also said he planned to leave EG before, but he got an offer he couldnt refuse. EG could have given stephano an offer that would have made staying worth his while, but they didn't. EG is a business and everything is related, because it all comes down to money.

I have been trying to prepare for this mentally, and while it did help, nothing could really prepare me for this!

I'm so sad that this is happening. I honestly still feel he is the best chance of having foreigners compete with Koreans in the future. Indeed he is the only foreigner who has been able to be amongst the very best players consistently. And it's not even close. The gap between him and the rest of the foreigner community is one of the largest gaps in all of the professional sc2 scene. None of them come close in terms of success, consistency and skills.

Not only that, but he also had an interesting and fun personality which, despite popular opinion, most foreigners lack as well!

I'm going to be completely selfish here and say that it's just terrible that he is leaving. I do still want to wish him good luck in the future and thanks for great games and entertainment! He's really the only player I have ever truly been a fan of.

I hope he somehow keeps playing even if it on a ridiculously reduced schedule. He already plays the least of any top pro. He could win money whilst at Uni in France and be one of the best foreigners with just playing a couple of times a week, and if he streams for a few hours this is another source of income as he would still get a lot of viewers. Might as well. University is actually not that difficult in first/second years usually. It doesn't seem like he will study medicine but more likely just whatever takes his fancy in science or engineering. Man everyone on my physics undergrad was drinking like crazy and still squeezing loads of gaming and getting all their work done. You don't have to retire, look at Vortix, Nerchio, Polt, Lucifron and the rest.

Very sad day for foreign SC2. He is BY FAR the biggest player in foreign SC2 history in terms of interest generated, hype, prize money, actually winning stuff basically everything. He revolutionised the meta not just once but twice in two different match ups ZvP and ZvT, even at the end of WoL he was able to win against code S players with a brand new strategy. Its such a shame that the foreign scene, being realistic, will almost certainly never have anyone as relatively good as Stephano.

Gratz Stephano

Less foreigners is better for sc2
the assumption that one HAS a first, middle, and last name is a western-centric view that is archaic and insulting

If what Idra said is correct, Stephano's salary has a lot of incentives on winning tournaments and stuff tho.

He has tapered off recently. It is not that huge of a blow to the foreign scene skill-wise, though I admit he had an amazing and popular personality. As there are tons of good european pros and emerging talent like drunkenboi, kane, neeb, and hendralisk. Not to mention Chinese players are getting more involved in the scene and many of them are as good as Code S level Koreans.
