Jesus, that is quite a big deal. Why the hell was this kept silent for so long? I'm surprised that this did not get attention earlier.

My bet is that people haven't said anything because they are all hoping that the money would come through. I think Destiny has just resigned himself to never getting the money, so has just decided to shame Own3d.

Shut the fuck up. My god this attitude stinks. This is what people THINK is professional, speaking politely and using proper sentences. You know what is actually professional? Fulfilling your goddamn contractual obligations and running your business properly.

Jeez if all it took to be considered professional was politeness then what a world we'd live in. Hint, it'd be shit. Lying is just as easy to do while being polite as it is while being offensive.

Way to rant about a single sentence taken out of context.. that was the only good thing I could say about Own3d, because they did stay polite in the conversation, while Destiny fell back on the standard blackmail and threats. I said something positive and negative about both parties. While everyone else is just pitchforking it up like argh everything's all black and white etc. I wouldn't trust Own3d with my paycheck, but at the same time it's hard to feel sympathy for Destiny. Why everyone else gets all emotionally invested in this I don't know. Just stick with twitch..

While TB may have used a bit too harsh language... he did make a good point that too often what is called professional is in fact just polite. He didn't quote you with your username or anything, so I wouldn't take it as a direct attack. I think his goal was just to point out that the community has different viewpoints on what professional means.

I'm not sure TB's point fulfills the criteria of what professionalism is though... yes its more than speaking politely but failing to meet contractual obligations under x circumstances does not mean a lack of professionalism as a number of factors could influence ones ability to complete, Most recently the slasher incident. Where EG promise more click traffic due to announcement which was blown before hand by slasher resulting in EG not meet that obligation but does that mean a lack of professionalism? I wouldn't think so.... but I do agree with the sentiment that is the wild west at the moment.

My take is that we are moving into an age of 'attention' economics and being so new like the gold rush we're still waiting for stability which requires a number of booms and bust cycles to weed out the root.

Actually, from a normal business standpoint, that DOES mean that EG lacked professionalism. Don't get me wrong, I take EG's side in the matter, but one of the reasons EG can be so angry at Slasher is because Slasher makes EG look so unprofessional by not being able to keep their own confidential information under wraps. Organizations need to be talking to other organizations to make sure no information is leaked, but not enough is being done to do so. Overall, the scene needs a big make over in order to move forward professionally, and some people are taking steps to help out, but EG looks bad due to their inability to keep Slasher from spilling the beans.
So your example used to counteract TB's point is not a good one whatsoever.

You are right though in that this is an unstable period that needs to be looked at with economic logic and a plan come up with to make sure eSports comes out ahead and with a stable future afterwards.

Own3d has never been a great provider. They were a cheap alternative to Twitch, and they were mostly taken up by people who were promised a lot of stuff or who couldn't get sponsorships from Twitch (or Own3d just promised more). Twitch has always been better overall, in absolutely every single way. It wouldn't surprise me if Own3d has been cheating players, but aside from that, the only thing left to say is that activity like that is what's hurting the progress of the scene.

Only thing to hope is that people learn from this and everyone moves forward positively.

Twitch isn't getting mixed up in nonsense like this, right? own3d not paying sucks, just like the quality of streaming they have, so I think it'd actually better if esports rallied unanimously behind a company like Twitch

I think having some competition would be better than only having Twitch, just like having Dreamhack and MLG both exist is key. Own3d seems to be dedicated to kneecapping themselves though, so I guess it already isn't real competition.

Also, props to TL for putting this on the front page.

After it being late or not paid after like 6 weeks that should have been a red flag. Needed to lawyer up then and there. Im aware his money is tight but Own3d streams are garbage and have been that way for so long, why would someone pulling in his kind of numbers risk going to such a low quality service like them. :/ not a fan of destiny but no one should have to put up with this bs from anyone, hope he can get a lawyer together and get his money and then some.

what's wrong with you?

IF a person worked for half a year not receiving ANY stable form of payment and you don't feel nothing for him, then obviously something is wrong about you.
Maybe you haven't worked before? Or maybe you don't understand his circumstances just because you don't like the guy?

Said this already... imagine not getting a paycheck for 6 months. Yeah. It sucks. Imagine sucking up your savings because you aren't getting a paycheck, and those bills haven't stopped. Yeah. It also sucks.

Regardless of whether or not you like the guy, he did work, so he deserves to be paid.

In defense of the poor guy getting bashed, Destiny is not an employee of Own3d, he's an independent contractor.

And this wasn't 6 months worth of problems, this came to a head in November when he switched to Twitch. There's a lot that is unsaid about what he was doing for three months while apparently not being paid and then deliberately breaking his contract two weeks before its end date.

I think saying it's hard to sympathize with Destiny was a poor choice of words, but he seemed to have as big a problem with transcoding as he did with not being paid. His story is focused more on trashing Own3d than getting paid, which seems like a douche-y thing to do although the missing piece is that he's given up on getting his money.

It was absolutely 6 months worth of problems, or did you just turn a blind eye to half the article?

International law suit on a streamer's (who isn't being payed) salary... Yeah.... Sure....

I dunno about lawyer up but I totally agree that he needed to take much more aggressive action after the first payment was weeks late.

It is 6 months worth of problems today on January 18, 2013. It was 3 months worth of problems when he ditched Own3d in mid-November. It's still a big problem, but not as big as the pitchfork crowd is saying.

I'll do one more comment on here for the people who are illiterate enough to keep fueling this argument, or maybe I wasn't clear. I never sided against Destiny on this. I said I couldn't sympathize with him, because he's done worse shit. I never sided with Own3d, I don't plan to use that site unless this somehow gets cleared up. Anyone still throwing the accusation around after that, I can't help you. You clowns are just looking for someone to rage at.

Done worse shit? Are you saying Shit talking and racists are worse than not paying for legit working hours?
I don't think it's hard to feel sympathy for those who worked and didn't get paid, even if they have done "worse shit" and obviously it shouldn't be.

Thanks for letting us know you ain't using own3d but we don't care.
We care for those who have used the service and got delayed payment like dimaga.
Destiny has posted so to let the community know more about what happen with own3d as a warning to the others like you, so you can say things like just "stick with twitch"

This has been known in the LoL community for a while now since they all started switching. I read on reddit before that the rumour is own3d owes 500k in back pay to streamers. Not sure why none of the LoL streamers ever came forward, maybe out of fear or hope they would still get paid.

I'm sure it's been said in the previous 10 pages but sounds like he got Own3d by Own3d.tv.

I guess karma really is what people claim her to be. Own3d should have cancelled his contract like most of his other sponsors at the same time he got booted out of SC2.

Should have stayed with the proven, reliable Twitch.

This is why I left own3d.tv as well, it took 35 days to get my 2nd payment from them. I do this full time same as destiny and when I read that blog i knew exactly how he feels. I will say that the only contact that's actually worth anything in that community is Alan Jones, big thanks to him for making the payment actually happen, and he's not even part of the money side of things at own3d.

I wouldn't recommend own3d.tv to anyone who expects to get paid for streaming as they simply don't pay on time. Needless to say my life has been a mess since I started streaming with them.

And i'm still owed around 4 grand from them

You seem a bit upset, and to be taking part in schadenfreude over a guy with a kid getting completely screwed out of money he needs. Classy post. Also twitch is still mediocre, streaming in general is. Either you have ridiculous viewer counts and a sub button or you get just enough money to drink yourself to sleep regularly. Youtube is and always has been better for money if you get a good following.
