They mistook Sting for Hero. Pretty sure Hero will be playing and not Sting. The format is the same as last year: two five men groups. Top three move onto the knockout rounds, with the top two from each group being placed directly in semifinals. Biggest format change is that instead of Bo1 group stage matches, every match in pool play will be Bo3.
It starts on the 17th of December and ends on the 22nd.
For the 2013 GSL Tour, there will be four regular GSL seasons with Code S staying exactly the same and Code A/Up and Down matches getting slight changes that will be announced soon.
For GSTL, there will be two GSTL seasons, but they will be in full league format more like Proleague with a long regular season and playoffs.
For GOMTV itself, there will be enhanced HQ and a new flash player that GOM will put on their site you can use instead of GOMTV. Meaning you no longer need to download anything to watch GSL.
I like the changes so far. Looking forward to the new GSTL. More team league matches can't be a bad thing, right? Kind of sad that there will only be 4 GSLs next year, but they were kind of crammed to get a 5th one in this year and the shorter tournament caused a lot of people to complain, so I guess it's for the best.

I like the more spread out GSLs, S5 just felt forced to combine with IPL and I think the scheduling may have tampered with some player's quality of skill due to lack of time. Having more GSTL matches is good though, and all those new stream upgrades are nice.

Sting won IEM Singapore. Hero won DH Winter. Seeing as DH Winter was apart of the Blizzard Cup last year (which Hero won), pretty sure it means Hero is qualified and not Sting.
It's pretty much the same format as last year except they switched MLG Providence with IPL5, IEM NY with OSL, and I think Blizzcon for BWC.

what's the situation for 3rd in points? I'm guessing it depends on whether or not Ryung advances? Cause Hyun/Bogus can be royalroaders and I don't think Sniper has placed high enough in previous seasons to be that far up

The compression was due to WCS. I will bet money that the drop to 4 GSL seasons is mostly to allow for WCS 2013.

I was actually surprised that GSL Season 5 started so soon (it started just a week after the finals).

Who ever wins GSL passes Seed in points according to the Liquipedia thing.

On a more serious note, I think four tournaments is a good idea, combined with the vamped up team league. Having one for each season makes sense.

Last I checked, whoever wins this GSL season will get the seed, as life is currently ranked 3rd, and all of them will surpass Life in points should they win GSL.

Yep. 3rd place spot goes to the winner of this GSL.
However, Parting can win WCG, and Life and DRG can take first or second at IPL5. If someone takes multiple spots and we follow last year's GSL points convention:
Only one: Seed will take the spot.
If two of the above happen: If Ryung beats Sniper in semis, but loses finals, he takes a spot guaranteed. If Sniper beats Ryung but doesn't win GSL, then he takes a spot if MC loses this round of Code A. If one of Ryung/Sniper wins GSL, MC takes spot.
If all three occur: If one of Ryung/Sniper wins GSL, Squirtle takes last spot. If Hyun/Bogus wins GSL, MC and winner of Ryung/Sniper advance.
tl;dr: People still in the running for a spot: Ryung, Sniper, Hyun, Bogus, Seed, MC, Squirtle.
EDIT: Just realized I didn't account for Ryung/Sniper/Hyun/Bogus/MC/Squirtle qualifying through IPL5. Ignore the above, I'm too lazy to figure this stuff out.

Fuck yes, only 2 GSTL and 4 GSL seasons. This is awesome and winnig one of the two will be an even more incredible achievement. Only could have been more awesome if Proleague and GSTL merged, but a one year long PL season and finaly real seasons of GSTL is also really nice.
A full league format GSTL is so much better than the very short format we have right now. I'm also glad we have only 4 GSLs, gives that much more meaning to winning the league (they still can do stuff like the BLizzard cup and so on to fill the time). Overall very good changes!!! I almost forgive them for insulting HerO!

Although I think the current GSL format is great, I'll be waiting to see the new format before deciding on the change And the new GSTL format sounds nice as well
Fewer and longer GSTL seasons is such a great idea. Really looking forward to it next year =D On the other hand, hopefully we get more than 1 Terran....(all Taeja's fault =(, unless he redeems himself and win IPL5)

Glad to see their making slight changes to Code A - some more transparency at how they allocate prelim winners and up/down players would be nice. Also a bit ludicrous for most prelim winners to face a Code S 4th placer instantly. =_=
great news, enjoyed blizzard cup 11 a lot (nice gimmick for gsl subscribers!), this year's gsl grand tour finals have a lot more potential as the kespa players increase diversity... i hope the gsl gtf will already benefit off the new stream. gom could use a good quality lag free full hd stream (can i get an amen!?!).

Honestly, probably a smart decision. WCS/Tour Finals take up a month and a half on their own. With 5 seasons, the 5th season was rushed and the Tour Finals are right before Christmas and two weeks later than last year.

Alright, a couple of other Kespa guys are in, and Rain was already allowed to lose his way out of it. Better?
It will be good for GSL to have real breaks between their seasons. It will help the players to regain energy and motivation and it gives GOM time to prepare improvements and new stuff (graphics additional content etc.) from season to season. A logical and good decision!
Come on Snute! You have to come 2nd after Leenock! We need a foreigner in the GSL Tour Finals! Oh, and WCG champion? I'd say MacSed and LoWeLy both have great shots at that title.
Whoo, sounds like good news! GSTL more like Proleague is going to make it more interesting. And it's good that they're making an enhance stream, going to make watching GSL better for me!

Um, that press release specifically mentioned they had a problem with the Grand Tour, so it's very relevant.
I'm sure it'll get resolved pretty quickly though; Kespa proved their point with the Rain-MLG stunt (presumably that they're in control? or how annoying it is to not have full control over the players in your tournament? or whatever). But either way, pulling Rain out a second time would probably cause more problems than they're ready to deal with.
Edit: the misunderstanding is they're allowed in specific GSL events, not the GSL as a whole; which is why they were upset to see Rain's name in the Grand Tour without advanced notice (which is strange because he's there as the OSL champ; so you'd think some communication between the tournaments would have happened).

I think they will most likely switch to HOTS, It's too much to ask to make the players play WOL for GSTL only but have HOTS in GSL and other tournaments. They would have to keep using WOL for GSTL for at least 3 months based on the current release date + 2 a year timeline.
In other news, with the results of todays GSL semi-finals Mvp is most likely going to be the only Terran in the tournament, unless someone pulls a miracle at IPL5.
I hope Parting wins WCG, and they grant his double seed to BWC runner-up, or through GSL rankings. I would love foreigners in it, but not AdellScott who most likely isn't even top 10 foreigner protoss.
Dont take anything away from Adelscott! Yes, from my point of view he is not one of the top foreign protoss, but HE DID get to the finals of wcg. Man, they did this shit last time but they are doing it again.
The prices for GSTL still aren't up. They say they having discounts of 5-6% but when you see them priced 149.99 after the supposed "discount" you realize it ain't really a sale at all. It's a fake sale.
This in turn means they can't offer a bundled GSL + GSTL package that costs less the sum of the individual parts.
Alas, the bonus coupon you get for a current customer is only $10? At least make it 10%.
Sigh, a bit frustrated with their pricing structure.

5000 points is a heck lot, and the other seasons have 10% point decay per season (quite a lot over 5 seasons)
With PartinG winning WCG I hope they give it to the next person in the GSL rankings who has not qualified, which is Seed I believe. Nothing against Adelscott, just seems more fitting to have all GSL Champs in the tourney, plus they did the same thing last year when Mvp qualified 3 times.

If MLG had a ranking system similar to that of GSL, MKP is at the top of it, did the math of that a while ago.
Except if you factor in decays.. 10% per champion, 5% per arena, MKP gets 2nd to Leenock .
i sure hope GSL is smarter than to invite the runner-up of a tournament with a really weak overall lineup, not even considering who that runner-up actually is. just invite the champion of IEM singapore (Sting) or something like that. maybe if someone does an all-kill in GSL World Championship tonight and doesn't have a slut already you could invite them, but that seems rather unlikely of course.

Stephano won NASL4 and MaNa won ESWC. I'd take any of the these two over Adelscott but I - again - I don't think there's any chance they'd take 2nd from WCG over 4th in GSL.

I don't think Violet will decline this unless he already has something on scheduled. This is different from normal GSL in that you don't have to stay in Korea for like 2 months. It is basically a 5 day tournament.

he did what? do we live in the same world? I have nothing against hyun or any player but I hate it so much when people bullshit about their favorite players.

Shit, you're right. Fail on my part, I think the GSL final got mixed up in the blur of other ZvZs in my mind over the last four days.
For the record, Hyun isn't even one of my favourite players either, he was just the first name that came to mind when I thought of players not invited who deserve to be there. In that case Seed definitely deserves it more, if he's the next one down on points standings.

Its looks to me that the launch date is picked to coincident nicely with the seconds GSL season in 2013. The question is if GSTL will switch during its 2013 season 1 or not.
It has to, there's no way they will keep playing WoL for 4 months in GSTL only after HOTS comes out.
I hope viOlet can catch a break in this tourney. He played like a Zerg possessed at IPL5
I'm guessing Sniper will win though, just to make everybody go into the xmas break angry that their favorite player lost to someone that nobody likes lol
I went 4 pages without a single mention of how HotS will affect this 2013 schedule, so I assume the answer is obvious and I'm just stupid not to know it, could someone enlighten plz?
I think someone mentioned earlier that HOTS will drop right before (or after) season 2 based on current release schedule, so we'll perhaps see it in S2 or S3.

2013 GSL 1 will complete as WOL, HOTS will start in GSL 2.
GSTL will probably switch as soon as GSL 1 ends.

HOTS will release during the last few weeks of GSL S1, but they will complete the season as WOL.
I guess they are using GSL points rankings from before this season's finals were over? it's the same players but the new rankings are 1. Mvp 2. Sniper 3. DRG 4. Life 5. Seed
Kudos to viOLet playing like an absolute pro in IPL5, but some part of me wants him to reject the seed as he has quite often done (this was not influenced at all by my Polt fanboyism). I just want to see another Terran instead of having half the tournament with Zergs, which is admittedly not as fun as more TvX match-ups. Either way, I'm satisfied either viOLet or Polt gets the spot really, but man, I really want to see a Marine built that does not have Mvp as the creator. But knowing GSL, they put precedence to GSL points, so might end up neither of them playing if viOLet rejects his spot.

The schedule is going to be tight to do each group in 1 day when they're bo3. When each group has 5 people in it. that's 10 match ups and with bo3 that's potentially 30 games in 1 day. that's an extremely packed schedule for 1 day. it's like trying to do 2 code S groups in the same day. unless they start early at noon and play all the way till the end of the day, there's just not enough time.

Well, Code A is split into 2 sessions. One starting at 1:10 and second at 6:10 with 4 Bo3 in each. And usually there is 2 hours break between each. So I think it would be doable if they start at 1:10. Of course, if we get tiebreakers (less likely in Bo3s but still possible)...LOL

I think you'll find it will be total 2012 points rather than current rankings
poor mvp guess we should buckle up for more zvp, zvz and pvp's
On the other hand he is the only player at the event who can ignore mirror matchup.
Is it only me or the new GSL schedule is similar to tennis season:
4 GSLs like 4 Grand Slams (hell - you can even make GSL from Grand SLam). 1 GSL Tour Grand Final like ATP World Tour Finals I can't exactly match 2 GSTLs as there is only one Davis Cup / year but I guess it is similar as well.
Another side note - GSL is the only absolutely top tournament that doesn't qualify a player for GSL Tour Grand Final. I wonder if sniper could really not be in top3 in GSL points. I guess it;s possible.

Nope, he isn't and won't be called a bonjwa.
Yea. He was close at one time - if only there was no MMA... Now he is not. But honestly I start to think that there won't be Bonjwa. More fuel to the "SC2 has to low skill ceiling" argument I guess.
I think Group A will be Leenock > Parting > MVP > Hero > DRG Group B Sniper > Life > Violet > Rain > Seed
Pretty hard to tell either way. I think the biggest underdog here is Seed. He hasn't had a good last couple of months. Anyone from the rest could take it all imo.
Judging from what I've seen currently for each player, I think the placements will go something like this
Group A : Leenock, HerO, PartinG, DRG, Mvp Group B: viOLet, Life/Rain (interchangeable really, these two are really close in terms of skill), Sniper, Seed
I just don't see anyone defeating Leenock and viOLet currently, PartinG/HerO/Life/Rain/Sniper are contenders but unlikely to defeat Leenock/viOlet, while DRG, Mvp and Seed haven't really been impressing me recently. But hey, its frigging Mvp.

We are just summing up the game that is Wings of Liberty, we still have two expansions to go and who knows what will happen then? Now with a larger pool of korean players with the KeSPA players in the picture, when the expansions are figured out and the metagame becomes somewhat stable as it has been lately in WoL we will see something at least resembling a bonjwa in Brood War.

I think LotV is the only period where a bonjwa can be crowned. WoL and HotS are too short to crown bonjwas, while LotV is the last expansion and going to be the most stable period because there would be no more unit changes unless Blizzard decides to take 6-8 years making LotV. But if we are to informally decide a bonjwa for WoL, I think most people have Mvp in mind.

I was honestly surprised they didn't do a super tournament again speaking of that. Why was it not continued? Were ratings worse? Production worse? I felt like there was way more hype for the super tournament than almost every other Code S that year. Or by taking a break from Code A/S it meant that ratings for that were worse as a result and it averaged out poorly?
I wonder, I don't remember hearing anything on it. [/derail]

I don't remember, but I swear there was some small article about Super Tournament written by Fionn I think, which said something about ST being discontinued because of less hype and the prize pool being too large to be sustainable.
I don't think it matters if someone does or doesn't consider Mvp a "bonjwa". During Hots & Lotv eras, when people look back at the 2 and a half years of Wing of Liberty, Mvp will be remembered as the best/most dominant player.
I doubt any player will be as dominant as Mvp was in 2011.

I'd be more optimistic. MVP wasn't THAT dominant. MMA and Protoss gave him trouble enough, and Leenock knocked him out in the November season. His periods of momentum don't seem terribly beyond the realm of possibility to replicate.
Now to beat his number of gsl wins and finalist appearances overall in his career, that will be a tough feat to beat considering how hard it is to stay at the top these days. Though I think HotS is shaping up to raise the skill cap thankfully.
To be honest, a couple of months earlier and these groups wouldn't look remotely similar in skill level.
No they would have been even more sparse in skill imo. Seed would be nearer to the top. Depending on how long ago, Rain and Life might still be up and comers whilst Sniper, Violet and Hero would definitely not look at the top level.
so much for gomtvt, lol. only one terran among the most achieved players of 2012, and an injured one at that, with extremely slim chances of actually winning this or even making it far.

A: Leenock - Parting - Hero - MVP - DRG (no faith at all in DRG and MVP, tbh, sadly) B: Sniper - Rain - Life - Violet - Seed (Seed is dead meat here in his current shape. A few months ago, I'd bet on him to top this group. Now he has no chance)
It seems immpossible for MVP to make it out of the group, but then...he's fucking MVP. So here's my wished group results: Group A MVP Hero Parting or Leenock (can't decide) DRG
Group B Rain Life Violet Sniper Seed
Here's my predicted group results: Group A Leenock Hero DRG Parting MVP
I wish MVP would win this, solely because he is by the far the best player over the duration of the WOL and it would be nice to see him end it in style
