I think EG did the right thing. Because they took measures before it really escalated, and are now planning to move on.
Still I have to say that, in the EU (probably also france) that this is not rape. So even talking about it, doesn't make it rape (in the EU!!!!)
So this is a double edge sword, because first of all he did not even know he was making a public statement. (Bling should have told him that he was streaming immediately, because that is his responsibility, or he should turn off the stream)
And the subject is clearly not as sensitive in the EU compared to the US, especially not "talking about it".(you know we have a "what is rape" thread here on Team liquid as well)
And after all this, he said "abuse", I don't really know what he meant by it, hitting a small boy?

Not sure how much of a hornet's nest I'm wading into or how much my off-handed comment is going to add to it but honestly, Stephano is 19 and French. I've met people that act like him and would make jokes like that. Personally I find it to be an amusing attitude that he has but I can very much see how it would upset people and I don't think an almost 3 week suspension is unfair or unreasonable.
And no, I'm not insulting French people and characterizing them as rape joke making weirdos. I just happen to know a few rape joke making weirdo's that happen to be unique among my diverse group of friends and share the common factor of being French.

Not sure if I should be happy that the community takes even potential abuse of young girls seriously, or if I should be sad that a small pack of Internet pseudo-activists have a stranglehold on esports using e-mail power trips. It's just sad, sad for EG, sad for Stephano, sad for Starcraft and sad for viewers. I would hate to see Stephano leave esports over stuff like this. I don't think anyone worth a damn would be happier for it, having one of the best players removed. In the end though, if he likes to sleep with other teenagers who are under 18, he'd better shut the fuck up about it while he's on an American team.

This is retarded, what's even more retarded is that so many people seems to be ok with that. abusing is not raping, and 14 years old is legal in most of europe.

Ye i think this is just bad case of trolling by stephano, plus he never knew it was streamed. I bet more progamers do stuff they rather dont do on stream....
Weird move by eg

What Stephano said was wrong, immature and immoral to most people. The community response was strong yet I wonder how many of them were actually genuine, but this is the price you pay for being a public icon. People on this chat justifying what he did are morons to a degree.... I'm sure many of us have had devious thoughts and/or conversations....So we can't exactly rally on to cast stones when we aren't any more righteous than he is. He got punished by the team - it's their prerogative to deal with their team members as they see fit so...... I just like to see Stephano play I couldn't care less what devious activities he dwells in, I hope he learns to stop being so childish and realize his responsibilities as a public figure.

joefish Sure it's inappropriate to joke about 'rape' but so are most jokes between friends. (it was not meant for public to see) If you disagree, tell me that all your comments be it on the internet or irl are always appropriate and double checked for political correctness.
Yeah i dont really thinkg about political correctness at all and i have a rather dark / Black humor. But I also dont have Huge Sponsors like Kingston, Intel or Monster who might be offended by such stuff. As I stated its not professional behavoir and if you'Re on a pro team you have to do so and pleas the sponsors

I didn't understand the bolded part of your post, but I also think EG did the right thing. They have sponsors, lots of sponsors who give them a lot of money. They have to be professional and making jokes about sex with minors is not professional. It's really like the incident that got Destiny kicked from ROOT in that it was not okay in the first place, but it had to be punished after it became public.
And I guess he meant sexual abuse of a 14yo girl? oO

So Stephano said to his friend that he abused a 14 year old. and the consensus of their communication was that he had sex with a 14 year old. And Stephano wanted to keep the message private after he realized it was being streamed. All jokes have some hints of truth or else they are just plain pointless. Unacceptable context in a workplace environment to his colleagues. Publicly destroying the image of his employer.
I think Stephano should be banned from Starcraft, I don't think he is a good image of the esport community for the world and it would be good if we did not have him messing with our image. His unintended public display was completely inappropriate and I don't think EG did enough to punish him. A employer should not keep an employee that has such bad control of his own image. I would like to see a greater amount of control in the community. If things like this keep slipping, esport will never be recognized as a sociologically acceptable hobby.

The fact that Satouri has poor control over his image rings very true to me.

Without Stephano there is no more foreign sc2 scene.
And you want to " ban him from starcraft " without any proof because " ALL jokes have hints of truth ", his punishment is still not enough ? You want some blood on the sand ?

People here are talking as if Starcraft 2 had any chance of becoming "mainstream", but it won't happen. It is completely overshadowed by LoL, that's how bad it is doing. Don't worry, no one will be aware that our community is childish because of Stephano, since hardly anyone knows this community exists.

I think it's more acceptable to make jokes about anything in Europe, especially for adolescents. Some friend says something rude/offensive/over the top and you try to beat that. I've heard plenty of rape jokes, from really normal people. Or racist ones, or about cancer. All very rude etc. But pretty common around that age, where you want to shock adults etc. Drawing a Hitler mustach on Anne Frank type of humor. None of these people really condone rape or racism, it's just a certain way of making jokes, "try to top that"
I think it's a different culture thing. EG should be more aware of that. Look at the GD Acer show, they don't care about cursing at all. That show could never have been made in the USA.
Similar here I think, of course a rape joke is frowned upon anywhere, but I don't think you would ever get suspended for such a thing here. Especially in an accidently streamed private chat.
It feels a bit too much like placing your morals/ethics upon others. I like Stephano the way he is, trolling, making fun. I don't want EG to change him in some Korean without a personality.

so this whole punishment is for a joke? admittedly not the best laugh and yes, childabuse is a serious crime in europe too, but please stay on the floor with punishment for behavior. sorry to say that so bluntly, but stephanos french, in europe we dont have that much guns, we do rate violance more strictly, but sex and sexjokes are not such a dealbreaker than in the u.s. if he breaks a law, punish him, but a month suspension for a joke he thought was private is a little overreaction in my eyes.

stephano has a disgusting personality. permanently ban him from all professional competition! what he did hurt the whole starcraft community and the whole e-sports scene. such people should simply be banned, to make it clear that such behavior/comments are NOT accepted. whether or not it can be considered a punishable offense legally, i'd let the legal system decide.
