It makes a lot of sense imo. Why put your main asset, the prestigious brood war stars, into a format where they're up against perceived weaker players in code B and A (a lot to lose, little to gain)? Furthermore, between proleague and the OSL, the herd would have less time to prepare than their GOM opponents. Particularly as we're only 3-4 months in to a PARTIAL switch, making the players prepare for up to three leagues is asking too much at this stage.

Kespa basically pays the salaries of its stars and they need to protect that investment, not promote a competitor to the detriment of quality of play and reputations.

It's such a douche move by Kespa to do this..GOM actually still had the rights to being the only sc2 league in korea for another year but they decided it would have been better for the scene if both OGN and GOM worked together. So that's what they did. And how does kespa repay them? Well with business as usual, of course. Absolutely disgusting.

I just had a weird idea... maybe KeSPA and GOM will try to keep themselves somewhat separate for a while to try to keep this rivalry going, with only a few events featuring players from both. Sort of like the two baseball leagues in the US... not saying if this would be a good thing or a bad thing, it was just an idea...

Yeah but the thing is, it would be like MLB vs some local community league. That's how bigger KeSPA is than GOM.

No, the thing is that Kespa has absolute control over the teams under it, while Gom has none and wants none.

As much as it sucks, makes sense for Kespa. They'll lose brand power since at this point many top Kespa pros are still getting smashed by B-teamers in SC2 teams (note WCS). On the other hand, thinking long term, waiting it out will preserve Kespa's image given their players are still way more popular than SC2 pros.
+ Show Spoiler +

Could also be part of (powerful) Kespa's secret plan to tough arm (comparatively tiny) GOM out of the picture so they're the only ones running the show again long run. Lol...god i hope that's as unlikely as it sounded in my head when i decided to spoiler it...

edit: although that does make me question OSL's inclusion of "GOM" pros
i live with a korean who doesnt play sc...wtf

I don't really like the move by kespa.
I can understand it from their point of view though.

Gsl is in my eyes still the highest level tournament, so it doesn't really change anything atm. The joining of kespa players is just another moment to wait (and hype) for. Hope it comes soon.

To me, the move feels like KeSPA is engaging in anti-competitive practices. It's just disgusting.

Goddammit, bad news happening one after the other.

Deference. How can you seriously put these two news together as "bad"? Do you want to call this kespa thing as bad as a person's death?

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
A lot of the Korean sc2 fans are upset because of this very possibility.

Back in BW, Gomtv had their own league called Gomtv Classics or something,
and Kespa didn't allow their players to take part at Gomtv and they had to close
after a short 4-season run.

Things ARE different, in that Gomtv is much more established than they were back then.
But the thing is, Kespa gets their own players AND the non-Kespa players in the OSL
while the GSL will be stuck with the non-Kespas that would want to take part in GSL
after they weigh out their schedule with the OSL and the foreign leagues.

In the long run, Gom will be left with very little attraction and Kespa would be reaping the benefits
with drawing of the viewers from the non-Kespa players that Gomtv helped create with their hard pioneering work
for the sc2 scene in Korea, on top of their carrying over Kespa players in the OSL :/

The long term causal effects of this could actually be worse than one person's death when added up. But that's just speculation of course.

A staff from Blizzard Korea also said “We are disconcerted by KeSPA’s sudden announcement. We will look over it and make an announcement by tomorrow”.

Oh, that's interesting. Blizzard's getting involved. They've normally stayed out of this kind of drama.

What is Kespa getting out of this? OSL is not their so more viewers for OSL does not give them anything and no GSL teams in PL. Is this a way to force gom to shut GSTL and made them join PL?

They'll likely try to explain what happened to the 'unified scene' they were promising on their press conference.
I can already see all the regret and complete lack of actions they are going to announce.

This is a bit uplifting. I know that Blizz is supposed to support GOM and the unified ideal, so let's hope that something comes from this.

That's awesome. Gomtv had the sole right to sc2 production in Korea and they backed up a bit and let Blizzard strike a deal with Kespa to be able to do stuff with sc2 as well. After all the commotion that Blizzard, Kespa and Gom caused with their 'ceremony' promising togetherness and working together for the betterment of E-Sports in Korea...this douche move by Kespa definitely calls for some action.

meh, everybody with half a brain had to see this coming - KESPA is kinda smart and doesn't want their stars to get smashed in the hell that is Code A qualifiers by some "no-names". In OSL/WCS they can at least say "ya, they are one of the best GOM progamers, all Code S level, so no shame in losing to them". If they lose in Code A qualifiers, well there's no excuse. I expect they won't participate in anything like this at least till HotS.

That's probably also the reason why they don't send anybody to MLG - only thing worse than losing in Code A qualifiers would have to be losing to foreigners ;-)

Also, don't forget this is not BW, if KESPA doesn't play nice, Blizz has something to say this time - they can even shut them down completely if it would come to worst case scenario...

We are deeply sorry to all fans who have looked forward to seeing the Korean eSports scene work together in harmony.

Why don't they just ban each other from OSL/GSL and get it over with already. Save us from the next few months of public shit-slinging and dick measuring.

Yea except GOM had exclusive rights to broadcast sc2 for another year and they decided to give that up in order for the players on both sides to play with each other to make the fans happy and grow sc2 scene bigger. A lot of people seem to be missing the point.

Now after GOM gave that up, KeSPA basically says, "LOL, u c what we did dere?" and only lets their players attend OSL, Proleague and MLG-partnership events so GOM's GSL gets less viewers.
