EDIT: For those of you who are wondering why I posted this in the SC2 section:

I posted this in the SC2 section so that people will be aware that this is coming up. I wanted the SC2 community to know about this so that they could tune in for the final BW finals. This game is the sole reason SC2 exists anyways, so why not pay your respects for the final farewell to an amazing game that kept thousands and thousands of people entertained for 10+ years?

Also, I'm pretty sure this was discussed to death in the BW section so I figured making it there would be redundant. Anyways, on the to the main point:

The final BW OSL finals is coming up. I think we should all do our best to tune in to watch the last BW finals and pay tribute to this amazing game. BW gave birth to SC2 and a legendary rivalry. How awesome is it that we get to see the climax for both on the same day?

Starting from the Ro8, TVing OSL held what was known as "Legends Matches", which featured two legendary BW pro gamers each week and pitted them against each other.

Source: This Is Game

As expected, it was the 'Lim Jin Lock'.

On July 30th, at 1:00pm at the eSports stadium that held the TVing StarLeague finals media day conference, the legends' match final two players were announced. As predicted by many fans and experts, the final legends match that is going to occur right before the TVing OSL finals will be the 'Emperor of Terran' SlayerS_BoxeR vs 'Storm Zerg' Xenics Storm_YellOw.

Caster Juhn Yong Jun stated that "the greatest match up that we've prepared for this OSL's finals will be the "Lim Jin Lock" between 'emperor' Lim Yo Hwan and 'storm' Hong Jin Ho. The greatest eSports match up ever will be held right before the TVing StarLeague OSL finals.

BoxeR and YellOw were known as the two best rivals in eSports history. The head to head between these two were known to provide the most explosive show matches ever, and the the rivaly between the two was titled "Lim Jin Lock." Even after YellOw retired, the rivalry between the two was so great that the SC2 show match that featured BoxeR vs YellOw was such a popular and prideful feat.

BoxeR is currently a 'playing coach' for the professional SC2 team SlayerS. Recently his health status has not been the best so he has put a hold on his professional gaming career, but he is still the oldest and most experienced gamer alive right now.

YellOw is currently affiliated with the professional team Xenics Storm for League of Legends. The team, Xenics Storm, that coach Hong (YellOw) is in charge of is a team that is held highly and counted as one of the teams to take the League of Legends Summer 2012 championship.

To commemorate the final StarCraft 1 StarLeague finals, the Legends' Match "Lim Jin Lock" will be held on August 4th, at 6:00pm at the Jamsil Student Gymnasium. The map will be Fighting Spirit. The 2012 TVing OSL finals will be Samsung KHAN's (P)JangBi vs SKTelecom T1's (T)FanTaSy.

UPDATE: English cast will be available for this finals Oo

Boxer retired from SC2 due to shoulder problems. I don't know how these probelms will impact the preparation. Altough I am sure he still can bunker rush.

Epic! This will be so much fun.

Also, I thought Boxer was just on a break. Didn't he say that he will return to SC2 progaming for HotS?

Sorry for a newbie question but I'm not an SC1 player. What's the relationship between Boxer vs Yellow and the (actual) finals? Did Boxer not make it to the finals or was he not participating at all? Thanks for indulging me with a little explanation.

Just check Sayle's stream, he generally restreams all the OSL events and provides English commentary. I play SC2 but am a BW chobo, and I can follow the games really well with his commentary.

I'm actually throwing a viewing party at my place Saturday morning so that all my friends (who I've already got watching SC2) can experience the thrill of professional BW before it's gone forever. I'll definitely tune in early for the Lim Jin Lock, I hope they practice enough to give us some exciting games!

There's no relationship, it's just a showmatch. Boxer no longer competes in SC1 and thus did not participate in the OSL, he's currently coaching and playing for the SC2 team SlayerS, but he's on the bench as a player due to a shoulder injury.

Thank you. How telling of Boxer's fame it is that a showmatch by him after retiring from SC1 overshadows the current competition, so that Boxer is mentioned on the top and throughout, while the actual finalists only in the last sentence.

Reading his autobiography right now. Probably going to come and watch the match, although I never really played SC1 multiplayer.

He's playing against someone who now focuses on LoL, while Boxer at least coaches SC2. I don't think he will need to practice too much extra to win this. He's the clear favorite IMO.

Isn't it usually called "Lim Jin Rok"?

So after their showmatch on the beach in Busan at the end of YellOw's (Wiki)Project A last year where they played SC2, now the conclusion playing BW. It's a shame that YellOw did not make it into Code A and stay with SC2. Oh well, looking forward to this as usual.

Yellow was kicking ass when he ended his career.. He took an insane game off Jaedong on Matchpoint and was tearing it up for Ace. He ended on a very high note so I wouldn't count him out for a long shot.

Judging on boxers game vs Huk last year I say he got some work left to do.. But with some practice we can all hopefully see some awesome dropship or bunker play
Jaedong.

So nostalgic seeing the names they dug up for the Legends matches. I still have to go back and watch most but i did get to see Nal_rA actually playing again.. had ruled that out a long time ago . He was my first favourite progamer, but it was always fun also watching Anytime, Reach and Jangbi play.. the end of BW has been kind to me in that regard. Wouldn't have minded seeing oov or pusan grace the game one last time but you can't win them all.

On the topic of Boxer vs YellOw..

I know it probably won't be as epic as this originally was, but damn I hope we see one awesome scv rush for old times sake .

I am kind of interested to see how it will go. This is BW not SC2 so at the very least you can say that both Boxer and Yellow are out of practise. People were expecting Nada to crush Anytime because of the fact that Nada was playing SC2, but instead Anytime surprised people and beat him despite not progaming for a long time.

It's surprising how it can work out. Nal_ra even took a game off of Flash well into his retirement in that 'Oldboy' documentary.

Anytime may have been the favorite.

Nada was playing sc2, Anytime was playing BW heavily. While not on a pro-team anytime plays and streams all the time on Afreeca and has played in numerous KR top amateur tournaments with the like of players like terror, sky, eagle, hiyA, matchfixer dude, etc.

Oh this. So so this.

Of course, you can't really bet an OSL title. This isn't the WWE.
You should not have to pay to watch the GSL, Proleague, or OSL at a reasonable time. That is not "fine" and it's BS to say otherwise. My sig since 2011. http://www.youtube.com/user/dabom88

HOLY SHIT FUCK I did not even know about this!

Also I hope that boxer won't hurt himself by playing

I wonder how much these guys are practicing? How were the other matches? Were they really sloppy, dumb, etc. etc. or did they look close to what it looked like when they were still playing back then?

i hope a lot of people come watch, i think it would make boxer and yellow really happy again

I hate boxer fans. No matter how much I disliked the guy, people would go crazy for him and hype up upcoming games to the point where you can't help but to think you should be excited. Game starts, all hyped up, and 5 mins later the game is over. The most glorified cheeser of all time. Too bad people learned how to stop it. Some pro gamers can't macro apparently. So it's now confirmed that Boxer lost his passion for SC2, right? That's probably why they lost GSTL so embarrassingly

If he's injured, why is he even playing this showmatch? Won't it do more harm? That's what I think, anyway. It feels like his injury is just an excuse to leave the scene without revealing that he's lost his passion.

Son, show some respect. The man could macro just as well as any one else during his day. Not only that, without him, you wouldn't have macro players; without him, you wouldn't have top-tier Terran players; without him, you wouldn't have the esports industry as it is today. And no, I'm not exxagerating.

Maybe because this is the last OSL? I'm sure that if the last professional baseball game ever were played in a week and a bunch of retired old men were invited for one last game of catch, they would sure as hell show up.

To be fair, I think Nada was really the one that popularized the macro-focused style. Boxer had his little tricks, but it was mostly micro based.

I'm sure this isn't going to be anything like practicing for code S for him. As for him using his injury as an excuse to stop playing... lolno.

This is an extremely narrow view of a player. Flash has some famous cheeses under his belt, too. Jaedong has 5pooled more than anyone I know. But it's still not a lot, because good names like this get a lot of appearances. For instance, JD might have a lot of 5pools, but that's because he's on TV all the time. He's on TV because he's good in general, and a small part of that means mixing shit up.

It's not about doing a cheese rush. It's impossible to build an entire career out of cheese rushes. If you think Boxer did that, you must respect him more than any of us, because you think he did the impossible. When you get to playing Bo5s on the OSL stage, you learn to figure out situations in a series where it can pay off to have very specialized, highly aggressive builds prepared. This doesn't mean 5pooling your way up the ranks on iCCup. It means creating a situation - inside the game and out - where you've confounded your opponent and turned the game into a game of control, where you're confident you can beat him. It's about making your opponent fight on your terms, in the context of your game plan.

If Boxer could macro at all, I don't think he would have been losing to non Korean players in tournaments or have been demoted to the B team and forced to retire because he couldn't make it in to any lineups. Boxer has the worst win % of anyone that is talked of as god. How many free wins did he get off people when everyone was clueless on how to play? I just don't get the deal about the guy. I'm still irked about being pumped for Oov vs Boxer on rush hour. I knew it was boxer playing, but I felt good about the chances of not seeing 2 rax. Proxy 2 rax in Oov's base, the story of Boxers career. How riveting. Only one can be as gosu as Boxer, even though everyone at low level on ladder seems to be eerily similar.

I don't care who the first best player was when everyone sucked. Just like I don't care who the best SC 2 player was during beta. It's ridiculous over glorification, just because of the time period they played in.

Guess what amazing Terran that no one talks about has a better career win percent than Boxer. Midas. I'm happy I wasn't around to see Esports start out in SC, because I derive no enjoyment from watching repeated all-ins. The only series I enjoyed from boxer was vs anytime, where boxer failed with cheese and had to resort to playing like he was a pro gamer, and somehow won.

Because he wants to play sc2 as a competitive progamer and this has nothing to do with competition, it's about representing a legacy, I'm sure that playing a single game in honor of his legacy and the final BW OSL won't kill him, while training exhaustively for sc2 would most certainly do harm, he also expects to come back slowly as soon as HotS is released, I know that you are just a bad troll, but I felt like informing this to those that might genuinely believe this bullshit is a possibility.
So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie

Your argument is you looked up win percentages in TLPD?

Please tell me about all the starleagues Midas won, or if he didn't manage to win any, all the finals he fought his way to over a 5 year period. Or do you really think people sucked for five years straight?

You haven't learned anything from the combined efforts of hundreds of pros over more than a decade if all you can do is whine about one of Starcraft's finest pioneers by saying he did too much all-in play. I'm sure in 100 years there will still be people who don't get it and complain about people not playing fair. And in 100 years Boxer will still be the first player who won 2 OSLs, let alone two in a row, along with his 3 silvers because he had better things to do than give up because some "fans" didn't want a Starcraft player winning Starcraft games in a certain way (a way which those fans didn't understand for shit).

Son, show some respect. The man could macro just as well as any one else during his day. Not only that, without him, you wouldn't have macro players; without him, you wouldn't have top-tier Terran players; without him, you wouldn't have the esports industry as it is today. And no, I'm not exxagerating.

If he's injured, why is he even playing this showmatch? Won't it do more harm? That's what I think, anyway. It feels like his injury is just an excuse to leave the scene without revealing that he's lost his passion.

Maybe because this is the last OSL? I'm sure that if the last professional baseball game ever were played in a week and a bunch of retired old men were invited for one last game of catch, they would sure as hell show up.

Just stop. You've demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of how Starcraft developed as an esport and how the esport industry developed. Educate yourself before you continue to talk.

The only series I enjoyed from boxer was vs anytime, where boxer failed with cheese and had to resort to playing like he was a pro gamer, and somehow won.

in my memory yellow vs boxer in coca cola was one of best series i've watched, same with boxer vs garimto. i dont recall seeing too many cheese but great openers that force opponents in crisis management and transition into regular game. you see cheese but i see great openings that forces reaction from opponent and force them to adapt. cheese aren't so black and white as some people seem to make it out to be.

and people love boxer for the exact opposite reason why people like idra. he is respected by the community, shows great sportsmanship and attitude. never gives up, entertains the fans, does it all for the fans. he is respected because his a great person rather than great player stats wise.

Isn't Yellow going to be favored since he played competitive BW a bit longer then Boxer? Although I guess it might even out since Boxer kept up with SC2/RTS's in general while Yellow shifted his focus to moba games. Perhaps it'll be closer then I expect.

Nada was playing sc2, Anytime was playing BW heavily. While not on a pro-team anytime plays and streams all the time on Afreeca and has played in numerous KR top amateur tournaments with the like of players like terror, sky, eagle, hiyA, matchfixer dude, etc.

Is that matchfixer dude who I'm thinking of or simply one of his colleagues ?
If you seek well, you shall find.

He's injured and will be coming back for HotS.

If he's injured, why is he even playing this showmatch? Won't it do more harm? That's what I think, anyway. It feels like his injury is just an excuse to leave the scene without revealing that he's lost his passion.

The information about his injury is probably a bit misrepresented. I bet boxer player from time to time, but retired because his should injury won't allow him to play at his full potential. No top pro wants to be seen publicly when they're not at their best.

I'm not overly fussed with who was the best in a beta as well, the thing is boxer is so far from that, to suggest a likeness just shows you don't know what you are talking about. The guy dominated South Korean BW for years and has been playing at a top professional level for over a decade now. You can look back and say he was just a gimmicky cheesy player, but it just shows you've read about his games on tlpd or whatever rather than experienced and realised that at the time, his strategy coupled with godly micro produced a really innovative player.

You forget that it's harder to learn and get better at the game when no one else is that good. When everyone is good, you have good players to play against and to teach you. When no one's figured the game out, but you still dominate, that's still impressive, because you've figured it out faster and better than the others.

Also, beta is a little different because a game in beta is supposed to be more unstable (more frequent changes) than when the game is officially out.

To be fair, I remember "back in the day", cheese in general was frowned upon by the community more so than it is now. People did want to see those epic big battle, half map games.. boxer helped change this perception though with his unique style, imo at least. The game was always evolving and others were pulling off good builds as well, it's just boxer was so good at it, for a consistent period of time.

Obvious troll is obvious.

Anyway I have to say that Boxer's brood war TvZ is probably one of the most exciting and enjoyable sights I've ever seen in professional SC/SC2. He took that match up and turned into a beatiful art form. Just go watch pimpest plays from back in his prime and you'll see some of the most amazing and creative play ever displayed. Even with him and Yellow both old and completely out of shape it should be a pretty great set of games.
It shall be engraved upon your soul!

If it has to end let it end like this, with the best rivalry and hopefully a great final series.

Pretty sure Boxer and Yellow will play well. NaDa's showmatch was pretty good, and I heard his streaming of BW games is also impressive considering his time away from the game. When you consider how long they played the game for it's almost like it has become second nature to them

Didn't we try Boxer vs Yellow in the least legendary WWE-style showmatch ever?

Yeah, but that was in SC2 back when Boxer was still playing regularly at a high level and YellOw was just a gold league noob.

Now it's in Brood War, which neither player has played extensively in seemingly forever. And since it's at the last BW OSL finals ever, I wouldn't be surprised if they coordinate with each other to make the match as epic as possible instead of being a one-sided smackdown. I personally didn't like the July vs Reach legends match earlier since it was basically Reach smashing July in a few minutes with a Zealot Manlot rush.

Me too

Hes probably playing high-stakes poker in a room with shark tanks for walls, wearing a one piece silver jumpsuit surrounded by white tigers within the room, while each player has 2 personal incredibly beautiful fan girls with giant fan leaves (fanning).

I miss Guillaume's style the most.

Why post in the SC2 section?

All you're going to get is a bunch of people who bandwagon on recognizable names. Honestly, this is the kind of effort that should have been made last year. But that really has more to do with the people.

I'd expect Yellow to be in a much, much better shape overall. But maybe Boxer can muster some of his magic to take it. It would definitely round up T1's final triumph nicely.

This is a lovely idéa, but I'm just scared BoxeR wont be able to perform to his fullest and getting smashed by YellOw isn't the way I wan't his sc1 legacy to end. Oh well, I guess I should be glad these two legends will be duking it out for a final time :>

Torn between who to pull for, I guess I will go against Zerg for once since Boxer is still loyal to SC; but he is with Jessica, so no I'm going Yellow lol

No he said he may switch races, but Boxer is to Terran what George Washington is to Merica. Imagine a world as Boxer playing Toss and then imagine a world where George Washington is BFFs with Osama Bin Laden. Neither would happen.

?

I'm pretty sure boxer would change races if he wanted to

Just because you think "Boxer playing Toss" is as unlikely as "a world where George Washington is BFFs with Osama Bin Laden" doesn't mean it is. You are just making a comparison that has no similarities at all. Comparing boxer playing Protoss to something that is impossible [because GW lived in a different time period] is just absurd.

Boxer has said that he doesn't mind switching races if he thinks it will bring in results. Are we supposed to believe that he is just bluffing?

Time to pay my respect to BW and its grand legacy by seeing it off in this final pure BW tournament.
So sad it has come to this, but hopefully the finals will be the epitome of greatness, the culmination of all 13 years of history and the reminder to all of why BW has been, and why in the hearts of many might still be the greatest RTS ever.

Now lets all enjoy it!

6000 tickets but also standing places as far as I could understand. You can see why BW's the best game from the dedication of the korean casters and audience ! Sc2 still a great game tho

Yeah. I also loved the reaction of the crowd, especially the women. I usually don't see women in general being that invested in video games, but that could just be me heh.
Either way I love the atmosphere the audience helped bring.

BW had over 30k people in an open area live tournament almost a decade ago, lets drop this silly business comparing live audience numbers because there is no point.

No matter who has the most, they decided to end Brood War because they thought it wouldn't be worth it anymore? and if you compare 30k people to 6k today, that is a massive loss.

To be fair, the arena could barely contain the people. Had they held the event in an outdoor area like the recent GSL finals, I am sure we would have seen many more thousands of people. It was an amazing match, an amazing finals, and an amazing crowd.

MLG gets a whole convention center for multiple video game tournaments over a whole weekend. It's pointless to compare it.

The mlg was crowd was much smaller than this. MLG was like 20k but they counted all the days separately and included everyone from all the games including LoL.

They could have held in a bigger venue if they wanted but considering they get special privileges considering the gymnasium because the SK Knights play there yeeeeah.

sigh. everyone below your post just starts talking about numbers. How the fuck do you begin to quantify Kim Carry's tears... dedication. That is all. I hope that SC2 can become like BW was but, even being an SC2 fan, to think that there is that level of dedication yet is just ignorant.

I think they said there were like 6k people attending.

It seems like Asian girls are more into gaming than girls in the US/NA, mainly due to cultural and lifestyle reasons I believe. Talking to some Chinese girls from Shanghai, and it seemed that gaming among girls was more prevalent than in NA, and many girls would play games like CS that you wouldn't expect girls to play in NA.

Anyways, great to see Boxer and Yellow have one more go at it right before the end.

It's the fact that some of those guys are actual celebrities in Korea.

Why did Bisu get taken? Partially because of his good looks.

2005. Let's see if SC2 can ever fill a stadium like that.

Plus, the audience last night may have been smaller than some sc2 events (although it didn't look like it), but the crowd was 100x better. Nobody is screaming or crying at western tournaments, thats for sure. The passion just isn't there. Some of these fans have been following BW for years and years.
