Season 7 is drawing to a close, and that means that all ladders will be locked soon.
What does this mean for you? During the Season 7 lock, you can no longer be promoted or demoted out of your current league or division, and your bonus pool will stop growing. Once locked to a league and division, you'll still be able to play out your remaining bonus pool and compete for standing within your division until the end of the season, so it's a great time to have some fun and perhaps push for a better milestone. If you're after a league promotion, then you still have a little time left! The Season 7 lock will go into effect on Tuesday, June 5 at 5:30 a.m. PDT.
Please note that the hidden ratings used to determine promotions and demotions will continue to update during the Season 7 lock and be used for matchmaking purposes. This means that if you play significantly better or worse than your assigned league at the time of the lock, your league may change when Season 8 begins and after you play your first placement match. If you go on a winning streak during the lock, for example, you may end up being promoted next season. On the other hand, if you happen to lose a lot more than usual, then you could be demoted. The important thing to keep in mind is that your games during the lock still count.
Season 8 Start Date
The Season 7 lock also means that Season 8 is right around the corner. During the week of June 11, Season 7 will end and Season 8 will begin. Season milestone rewards will be locked in at this time, and bonus pools will reset. Hidden skill ratings used for matchmaking and league placement will carry over from the previous season, so if you've completed placement matches in a previous season you will only need to play one new placement match after Season 8 starts.
Finally, I took a break from SC2 for Diablo, now I'm too afraid to go back to ladder since I fear demotion due to detremented skills. At least now I can go back to practicing normally.
Yay, means that the new season is out when I get home from holiday. Means my NA MMR has reset so I can use that account to trash around on while I get back into shape without having my EU MMR go to shit.

In the past they didn't announce map changes at this blog post either so there's still hope to see Metalopolis (most likely considering the last poll) removed. Source for what I said.

IMO Metalopolis is one of the best maps created by Blizzard, It's been with us forever I don't want it to leave. I don't really get why people are hating on it so much. [Mid Master Zerg and High Dia Random]
Blizzard stated when they removed Metropolis from ladder that we'd see it again on ladder. I'll guess that that'll be the next season already.
I'm a lot more interested to know the replacement for (most likely) Metalopolis, assuming they keep the map pool at 10 maps.
When looking at possible news maps there are no real obvious picks. There are currently no maps around that are commonly used in all of the major tournaments that haven´t been on ladder. The closest thing to that would be Atlantis Spaceship but I´m afraid what they'd do to that map in order to make it fit on ladder. Other possible picks would be Whirlwind, Muspelheim, Frigid Pass or Vicious and out of those I like Muspelheim the most.
Biggest problem with those last 4 maps would be that the gamecount on those games is simply too low.
I would be surprised (and pissed) if they would actually put Bel'Shir on the ladder. The map is being phased out for a reason: it's terrible.

I honestly don't see why it is a problem as a diamond protoss. I didn't feel that it was imbalanced when I played against terrans, zergs or mirrors.
please please please tell me this is a joke? close spawns are the most broken and imbalanced spawns u can get. id rather play steps of war then close spawns metal....
With the recent news of maphackers being so prevalent and running amock, dunno. I was going to go crazy and try to get GM next season(or dying trying ), but I might skip it due to these recent news.
Time to push for more points than my team of noobs! This season I was lucky to get in the same division as my training partner and he is ~75 points ahead of me!

I used to until I got fed up with Antiga Shipyard. That, Tal'Darim, and Shakuras are actually just not worth playing as zerg. At least Metal is supposedly zerg favored. I mostly hate it because of ZvZ, but Terran and Toss can't really safely FE or secure a third so it makes for awful games.

This is actually my opinion too. It's the best (imo) Blizzard map and deserves to be kept for nostalgia, at the very least. With non-close spawns it is also fairly balanced.

Proof? I say Dual Sight is... but there is not enough time to worry about which map is imbalanced when I'm not the best player in the world
are there really people that still think metalopolis is a good map? it's a terrible map, and i've been saying it since beta. The only reason it was played because it was by far the best map out of the absolutely atrocious ladder map pool back then. Now you have decent and even good maps in ladder. There's no reason to have metalopolis.
Damn, I still wish seasons were a little bit longer -_- oh well hopefully we can get some more maps and finally get rid of some of the really really old and bad ones.
Oh yeah! I always get so pumped whenever a new season hits! Time to play like a madman when season 8 hits, a new season means a new barrier to lift and hit.

That's not the only reason, lol. I tried massing games last season and I got fed up with playing TvP, steamrolled by 5 colossi, 30 zealots, and 10 stalkers every game. Getting matched countless TvPs only to lose to most of them from either 200/200 engagements or all-ins, it's just not fun playing against that. I may be approaching TvP in the wrong way, but I feel extremely frustrated when I lose in TvP. The unforgiving nature for Terrans in TvP is just too much for me. TvZ has been becoming like that so, unless I mech. TL;DR The matchup just straight up pisses me off and frustrates me, so I don't bother playing SCII much anymore. That topped with the fact that maphacking is so easy where you can get it from the first page of google search, and I lost a lot of my motivation to playing.
This season I finally was able to keep my Bonuspool at 0 nearly all the time. This was probably the first season since season2, were I played more than 100games. I'm now top3 in my division since start of the season and never managed to get promoted, even with 10 game winstreaks against players one league above me, so with the new season my promotion should be definitiv.

What makes you think there will be no changes to the map pool? The season lock article has never said something about the map pool; the map pool article allways came later. At the last season there was a day between them.
I'm not the kind of guy that really cares to veto a map if it is hard to do certain things, but TDA and Metal are just too big of headaches to not veto.

agreed. I haven't played a single 1v1 this season. tvp is boring and tvz is almost as dull these days. I don't care how balanced it is, just how fun it is. but both matchups involve 15 minutes of z or p defending until they have a high tech large army. then you get one big battle and its all over. even winning in a game like that is dull.
its not their fault, its blizzards for dumb design.
its no wonder I never see tvt on livestreams. I watched one masters player and he got 6 tvp in a row, then a tvz then back to tvp. I had to laugh.
I may play 1v1 next season, but I'll likely get fed up after 10 games. hurry up hots!!!!
did wonder when this was going to happen... might try and burn away the midnight oil and try and get as many points as possible before next season starts...
and yeah i hope they change up the map pool a little... and remove gold bases!!!
I can only hope they don't introduce new maps. Cos other than Whirlwind and Muspelheim there is no decent maps left that were used in tournaments... and they probably won't use those 2 cos they are so new.. and they didn't ask for another TLMC or anything... so either we would get shit maps like Dual Sight or we would get Blizzard maps.. and nobody wants Blizzard maps, that's for sure!

Last time I logged I was R1 Silver with no points remaining. Now I'm R8 with 71 bonus pool. What the hell happened to the time in between there? It wasn't D3.
In any event, much like someone else posted I'm anxious about playing now since I'm likely rusty.

I'm Zerg and I even have Metalopolis vetoed, it's a boring map to play. Please get rid of Metalopolis, Tal Darim, and Shakuras, sick of these old maps.
I love ladder locks because for some reason it makes me feel less scared to ladder and relieves some of the pressure of laddering but I have no idea why I also like to take more risks when the ladder locks
I'm kind of sad because the leagues are getting harder and harder as far as I can tell.
Just switched races so I went down a few leagues. There's people in silver that know what they're doing unlike the last time I've been there which was around season 1 or 2. Actually in Gold though so I might just get the best silvers.
I'm sad that Metalopolis, Tal'Darim, and Entombed aren't being removed in favour of new maps.
Metalopolis is stagnant and not very fun to play on, as well as being one of the least popular maps as revealed by the poll by Blizzard which decided to remove Shattered. Tal'Darim makes PvP a 4-gate fest, and Mutalisks are the only thing ever made on that map for Zerg 99% of the time. Entombed suffers from the same problems Shattered does: Imbalanced close positions, a choke behind the natural where you can siege up and it's insanely hard to defend if you're Zerg, and if you spawn cross positions it favours the Zerg heavily due to the wide-open middle which is just begging for an army of Ling/Baneling/Ultralisk to run(roll) in from 3 sides and kill your push that is moving out.

It's extremely frustrating to play on as Terran and Protoss against Zerg, and as Protoss against Terran. As Terran Zerglings and Mutalisks can kill so many SCV's if you don't look for two seconds, and it doesn't help that the bases are so spread out, and that there are two huge pathways where the Zerg can easily counter attack one way while the Terran or Protoss attacks through the other path. It's also heavily stagnated.
I skipped this season to reset MMR just for fun, can't wait for the next season :D
Does this really work?
Yes. I skipped season 6 due to other priorities and when I came back for season 7 I had to re-do my 5 placements. Played a lot of low league players before setting back into Diamond.

Uh.... no. Leagues may be getting harder, but nobody sub diamond has any idea what they're doing. If you copy builds from professional replays and play 20 games vs the ai just practicing executing it in each matchup you will become instant diamond.
This used to be the case with masters I would say earlier on, now diamond=actually knows how to do builds and can consistently replicate them, masters=knows the builds, is good/fair at executing them.
No, even people in diamond have no idea what they're doing. I'm high master NA and because of this stupid blizzard ladder system I occasionally get matched versus a random diamond player. Some of the stuff they do is hilarious. One base roach in ZvZ, proxy 1 gate in PvZ into nexus after making 1 zealot, stuff like that. I generally message people after games like this just to see what they are thinking, and a lot of the time they actually attempt to defend their decisions. For example the protoss player who proxied 1 gate in my nat on Korhal, made one zealot and then a nexus said to me "it lets me put on early pressure and take a safe exp." I don't really know what to say to that.
Even masters players sometimes have no idea what to do past 8 minutes in the game, but that's much more rare.

I hate language like this. Skill is relative. A high gm/pro will say the exact same things about your play that you do about Diamonds. Diamond players are in the top 20% of Starcraft players. Saying they have no idea is simply wrong, and frankly disrespectful.

It's not the same thing. I know what to do, with respect to builds and midgame goals/timings to an extent, but I just suck at doing it when compared to them. I've got crappy mechanics compared to a salaried pro, but I attempt to emulate their builds and their play as much as I physically can. I don't open 1 hatch roach or 1 hatch muta like I see diamond players do.

...No. Even masters players are able to execute the same optimal build orders up to 50-70 food, its kind of an objective thing. The sub diamond/masters crowd are rarely able to do this simple thing and do all sorts of random/nonsensical "builds".
I don't play very seriously on my US account, like half of my games I play with random there. If you make some investigations, you can even notice I finished season 5 with random in high master.
Also note that I haven't played for about a week since my new computer is broken, I probably accumulated about 50 bonus bool in addition to that.
Guys, I'm just wondering. I'm playing Starcraft II from 6 months, got into diamond in april, and stayed there till now with 760 pts and 3rd place in division. I'm getting high diamond - low masters when playing, and I lost more games with masters, than I won (like 2 win/ 8 loss). So, if I win placement match in next season, I will get dropped in masters, or I'll be still in diamond?

You answered your question yourself there. Once you have at least 50% winrate against masters players you might get promoted.

They do in my opinion, I have been up and down in diamond/masters, and atm I'm way better than 1 year ago while it's still the same league. People just get better, so even if you improve, you might not get promotion that fast.

Yes you can. You skip an entire season without playing any games (ranked 1v1 or ranked team games) and it will reset and force you to do 5 placement matches again and start fresh. I did that a couple seasons back. It totally works.

Even with most of my recent spare time being allocated towards D3 rather than SC2, I still hit around my target of 100 wins for this season (not 100 games). I've probably lost the same number too. No idea what you've been doing. 15 games is like playing for three days lol.

You cant reset your MMR.
If you didn't play a 1v1 or Random Team game for a season (because Random Team uses your 1v1 MMR), then the system essentially "forgets" about you because it had no data to pull from the previous season, and it only looks one season back for history. The same applies to arranged team games if your particular arranged team hasn't played for a season.

I have ~760 points in diamond (about top 300 in NA). I play about 50% masters and win about 50% of those games. Win against almost every diamond. I am really hoping I get promoted tomorrow after my placement or I will be so sad T_T

If you've spent all your bonus pool, that's about 343 adjusted points. If you're in the lowest tier then that will be just shy of the Master border.
I skipped this season to reset MMR just for fun, can't wait for the next season :D
You can really reset your MMR that way?
You cant reset your MMR.
If you didn't play a 1v1 or Random Team game for a season (because Random Team uses your 1v1 MMR), then the system essentially "forgets" about you because it had no data to pull from the previous season, and it only looks one season back for history. The same applies to arranged team games if your particular arranged team hasn't played for a season.
Oh no, random team uses 1v1 MMR seriously?
I thought random team uses its own MMR... uuhhhhhhhh That blows now I can't reset.
Sounds odd indeed. As i have seen MASTER Random Team players that has a 1v1 ranking from Bronze to GM. It is amazing how a 1v1 bronze player can be Master in team games if they use 1v1 MMR.

Excalibur_Z I think you need to clarify this a bit. I'm pretty sure there IS seperate MMR for random team and 1v1, as I have played exclusively random team for many seasons now, and I have clearly seen my MMR going up (being promoted from diamond to masters and subsequently making high masters with good win% is my only proof of this). I haven't touched 1v1 since season 1, but it always says that I only need to play one placement match to get placed in a new league. But my 1v1 MMR certainly hasn't been in play during the past several seasons when I've only done RT.
I think it would make sense if 1v1 MMR carried over to random team MMR during initial placement matches (if no random team placement matches had been done yet), but from then on the random team MMR should be completely seperate (and I'm pretty sure it is). On this same note, can random team MMR transfer over to 1v1 MMR if only random team has been played over the past several seasons? Or does the MMR only transfer from 1v1 to RT? From how I always understood it, the MMR does not 'transfer' no matter what - the 1v1/RT phenomenon only applies as far as having to play 5 placement matches or a single placement match depending on if either your 1v1 or RT has played a match in the last season. MMR does not seem to come into play at all with this.
Yeah, Bliz should really remove Metalopolis and Shakuras Plateau (because both of those maps are horribly imbalanced) as well as Tal'Darim (because of A. PvP on that map and B. it's also being rather imbalanced)

They added like 2 maps, And they are taking out like 2 maps. IT should take affect on tuesday. Granted it doesn't really matter if you play today in this season or later. Your mmr will change after every single game.
as every season there was a patch that fucked up all my progress that i made in a specific matchup (this time its tvz) and sets me back to where i was pointwise at the beginning of the season even though i have improved. it's the most frustrating thing about this game...

I also thought that the MMRs for random teams and 1v1 were separate. In my case, I was platinum in all 4 game types - 1v1,2v2,3v3,4v4, but last season I was promoted to diamond in 4v4 and 3v3 but remain platinum in 2v2 and 1v1, even though I had games played in all 4 game types.

The MMRs are separate after the seeding period. RT/1v1 are interchangeable for the purposes of querying whether you were active in a previous season though. I'm not sure if there's a re-seeding though (for example, what if you're Bronze 1v1 and Master 2v2R, then you play ONLY 2v2R for a season? Will your 1v1 MMR still be Bronze or will it be Master?).

Adjusted points are your points excluding bonus pool. If you had 632 points but still 417 remaining bonus pool, you would have nearly 1050 points if only you consumed that pool. However, if you had 632 points and 0 bonus pool, that's a pretty significant 417-point gap. Your bonus pool doesn't affect your MMR at all, and in fact that's why we use adjusted points to gauge roughly where you are: we take it out of the equation completely.
Therefore, if you have 632 points and all bonus pool spent, your adjusted points are only 215. You'd only get into Master if you started this season in the top 3 tiers of Diamond. If you started out the season with a promotion into Diamond from some other league, then chances are you're in the 6th or 7th tier and therefore would be too far from a promotion next season. I'd say the chances are fairly slim but it depends on the circumstances.

On June 12 2012 04:25 KayoDot wrote: Excalibur, what tier of diamond would I need to be in to get promoted with 618 points and 0 bonus pool? How are you determining the point cutoffs?
Using the known offsets. I would say if you're below 450 adjusted points (867 including bonus pool) there's a low chance of making it into Master from Diamond. A higher tier offsets this, so at 618 points (201 adjusted) you'd have to be in the first or second tier.
Im actually 1st in my diamond league with 800+ Pts(99th percentile from sc2ranks) facing a lots of masters and high diamonds players. I must win my placement match or i have a few chance to get promoted ? Thanks !

The placement match is just another game. It effects your MMR no more than a regular ladder game. If you're MMR is at a masters level, you will be promoted when the ladder unlocks.
Can anyone tell me how to figure out how much of my point total is bonus points, so I can figure out my exact adjusted points? I grasp the concept, but I can't figure out where to get the figure of how many "bonus points" I have earned in order to subtract them from my overall points total. I'd appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction here!

Well I've been in Diamond since Season 4, and last season finished out in the Top 15 of my division, even though I played less than I did in Season 5. Currently I'm Top 8 (6th to be exact right now) and pretty much facing only Masters (including beating a Top 8 masters on ladder once) and High Diamonds. Do you think my MMR is possibly pushing me into Masters by now? I've been playing them on ladder for the last three seasons but a lot this season more than before.

This season there were 8 weeks of bonus pool. That's 720 total for Master and Grandmaster, and 417 for Bronze through Diamond. In-game (not on the website) you add your remaining bonus pool to your current displayed points, then subtract the total as found above based on your current league. That will give you your adjusted points.
So this season I managed to get in around 200 games (winning ~120). Used up all my bonus pool and sit at 800 points and #1 Diamond. Anyone know what my chances of being promoted are?

This, sir, is what I wanted to hear. Thanks for the quick response!
This may be a stupid question but judging promotions by points doesn't make sense to me. I didn't really ladder a whole lot until this season (finally decided it's time to start trying to get good for real :D), so I don't remember how the previous beginnings of seasons worked, but after your placement match, don't you always start out with 0 points in your division? If you are already really high diamond and close to a promotion, how would you get up to the same high amount of points you had the previous season? Or would you just get promoted with a low amount of points? Besides that, how is it possible to tell how close you are to promotion if in previous seasons you had high amounts of points as well, meaning you had to have won more than you lost in those seasons, too. Also, is there any way to estimate what "tier" I am in. I have been in Diamond since Season 1, and I was demoted to platinum in either season 4 or 5 and made it back to diamond in that same season. Now, like I stated before, I am rank 4 764 points (all bonus pool spent) and playing low-mid masters about 50% of the time.

You do start with 0 points, but you face the same skill level of opponents as you did before the new season. Not sure about tiers unfortunately :/ Edit: Didn't quite answer the first part- You can get promoted with a low amount of points if you were close to promotion before the new season. You're not actually expected to get the same number of points as you had last season quickly; as a matter of fact, it should take all season to get that high up (although hopefully you'll get there faster-->possible promotion).

What I don't understand is how it would be possible to get that many points again. You would have to win more than you lose which means your MMR would keep increasing and you would be playing better and better players, meaning it would be harder to win enough games to get that many points

Hi Excalibur, I am currently rank 4 Diamond with 649 points (232 points adjusted). I am teams-even with diamonds that exceed 800 points and some low-mid masters (I'm on a 6-win streak). Strangely enough, the number 1 diamond in my division is only sitting around 700 points (which makes me think that I am in a higher-tier diamond division).
What should my chances of promotion to Masters be for Season 8?

You can't 100% judge promotions by points because promotions are determined by MMR and nothing else, but with enough stability, points will begin to approach MMR and theoretically everyone will have a rough MMR-points equilibrium.
Tiers contain hidden point offsets such that it's "easier" to earn points in lower tiers versus higher tiers, but the tradeoff is you're starting off at a lower skill level. Think of it like a tournament where the high-seed player actually starts off the bracket in the 3rd or 4th round but the low-seed player starts off in the 1st round. Eventually the best players from the early rounds are going to face the high-seed player, but he's already proven himself (that's why he has the high seed). The higher your division tier, the closer you are to promotion.
Deriving your division tier is not an exact science because to do so accurately, you have to know the division tiers of your opponents, which are also hidden. However, with enough data points, it's possible. You can download the Matchmaking Rating Tool plugin for SC2Gears which will manage a close estimation of how close you are to a promotion.
As for your current situation, if we assume that your points closely represent your MMR, then we have the following data to consider (these are Not_That's latest estimations and are not accurate, but they're pretty close):
For example, if you started in the lowest tier, you'd need about 430 adjusted points (technically speaking you'd need that equivalent in MMR). However if you started in the highest tier, you'd only need 130. You said you have 764 points, less the 417 bonus pool, equals 347 adjusted points. This means you'd be pretty safe if you were in Tiers 1 through 5. Since you say you've been facing Masters for quite a long time already, it probably means you're in a higher tier (since if you were in a lower tier, your MMR would still be around the border and you'd be playing against roughly equal numbers of Diamonds and Masters).
Thank you, Excalibur. Makes more sense now :D. Well I can only hope I am in Tier 1-5. Too tired to play more tonight and unfortunately I won't be home from work until late tomorrow to play my placement T_T. Gonna be itching to play it. If I get masters I will be so happy ^_^. Thanks again for your helpful responses in this thread!
It's interesting, but it probably won't change my playing schedule much. Not that I play much to begin with, it's mostly for fun and for the enjoyment of improving my skills.
There were 417 bonus pool points in season 7? So If I finished diamond with 847 points I have "fixed" 430 points, which means I have a pretty good chance to be in masters next season?
i have 1.450 points high master NA, placed second in my league with the first one having 1.650 points
is it possible i get GM ? since GM league will open next week, during this one we'll all face cheeses and all-in which is too risky for someone who perhaps will get to GM, no? or should i keep playing and not limit a certain amount of small games?

I'm fairly sure that the normal + - values for games still apply. It just won't have a bonus attached to it.
Hey all, can anyone confirm if Blizz fixed this MMR reset method? I didn't play any 1v1 or random 2v2, 3v3, 4v4s last season, and this season I still need to only play one game to be placed in each of those four leagues... Was really hoping for a clean start this season

I know it worked in previous seasons, a friend of mine did it as well, I'm asking specifically if it still works this season, because for me it didn't, I still only need to play a single placement match...

I've heard reports of that before but I don't know how to explain them. Every time I think that the MMR reset didn't work because I hear reports stating that, I hear other people say that it was successful. This happens every season.

I think that the reset might only work if you haven't played ladder at all last season, including arranged team games (which I played a lot of in season 7).
All the successful resets that I've read about have skipped one season altogether, including arranged teams. That's the only explanation that I can think of, besides the one that the system randomly decides whether to reset or not. Unless of course there are players who played team games and still got reset, which wouldn't surprise me.
