The last Code A qualifiers were inspiring to all those who were holding out for a foreigner hope, one who would make it through the Code A qualifiers. We did well, as a record 2 foreigners in one season made it to the finals. MacSed came within one game of qualifying, and DeathAngel lost in the finals. It's not like DeathAngel got an easy bracket, either. He had to defeat the mighty Protoss NSHoSeoSage to get to the finals.
Jinro, HayprO, XiGua and SLoG all made it to the semi-finals, a significant result. Foreigners just keep improving. They will look to NaNiwa's Ro8 in Code S and the last Code A qualifiers as inspiration. This is the time. A foreigner will finally qualify for Code A, the legitimate, hardcore way. After seasons of heartbreak and disappointment, the time has finally arrived.
Previous Code A qualifier experience: Has attempted 7 times previously. His 2nd attempt he made it to the Ro4 of his bracket, before losing 0-2 to SlayerS_YuGiOh. Last qualifier lost 0-2 to FnaticRC.Ares
cArn was dropped from eSahara (now Absolute Legends) at the beginning of the year, because after having no practice for 6 months, elected not to even attempt to qualify for Code A. This was seen by eSahara as cArn "lacking motivation" and so he was dropped. cArn was having some ridiculously and unfairly tough times, but recently has found somewhere to stay. Somewhere he can actually practice. I know not where it is, but cArn is back laddering, and having attempted every single Code A qualifier except one, he certainly has good experience and a good idea of what to expect. We haven't seen exactly what a practiced cArn can do in a long, long time. Maybe he'll finally show us.
AL.DeathAngel Previous Code A qualifier experience: 1 previous attempt. Made it to the finals of his bracket, notably taking out NSHoSeoSage 2-1 before falling to FXOTree 0-2.
Of all the surprises (both good and bad) in the previous Code A qualifier, none were more shocking than the run by Romanian Zerg DeathAngel. He was relatively under the radar, with no real tournament results. But he showed that his practice in Korea is definitely paying off. Although Naama has left Korea, DeathAngel has stuck around to make one last attempt at qualifying for the most prestigious tournament in StarCraft 2. DeathAngel has said that if he fails here, he's going home. There's a lot on the line for this man. Was his last run a true fluke, or is he the genuine article?
Previous Code A qualifier experience: 2 previous attempts. Took a game off FnaticRC.Moon in the last qualifiers.
Whether you love him or you hate him, you have to respect the determination desRow is showing by staying in Korea for an extended period. He has the dedication, and it's paying off. He took a game off Moon in the last qualifier, and has obviously improved greatly. Is desRow doomed to the seemingly inevitable failure like his fellow foreigners, or is he poised to cause one of the biggest Code A qualifier upsets ever?
Previous Code A qualifier experience: 3 previous attempts. Lost 1-2 to FXOTopClass. Last qualifier made it to the Ro4 of his bracket, before losing 1-2 to FnaticRC.SoN.
The Banjo has shown that he can beat the best of the best. But there's something missing. A consistency. Some days HayprO will look mediocre, but other days, days that seem to happen at complete random, the Banjo will unleash his fury, destroying everything in his path. HayprO's chances on qualifying for Code A are completely dependent on which HayprO shows up.
LiquidJinro Previous Code A qualifier experience: 4 previous attempts. Lost to FXOWeekend 1-2, lost in the finals 1-2 to IMMinSeOk after taking out SlayerS_Cella 2-0, lost in Ro4 to Type.Phoenix 1-2, lost in Ro4 to SlayerS_Cella 0-2.
What is there to say about this man? Still the highest placing foreigner ever in GSL, fans have been hoping for a resurgence ever since he dropped out of Code S and then Code A. Jinro's results in Code A qualifiers are impressive. With the exception of his first ever Code A qualifier, Jinro has made it to at least the Ro4 of his bracket every single time. This is frustratingly close for his many fans. Last qualifiers, Jinro experienced arguably the biggest failure of his career. He was in the Ro4 against SlayerS_Cella, and if he beat him (Jinro had 2-0ed Cella in a previous Code A qualifier) he would be facing GGanDoL, the Protoss who got a bye to the finals. However, Jinro somehow threw away two won games to Cella, losing 2-0. The ultimate opportunity for the Gorilla Terran had vanished as quickly as the glimmer of hope had appeared. But this time, Jinro knows exactly what to do. He's tasted the most crushing kind of failure imaginable, and he will NOT repeat it. The Gorilla Terran is coming back with a vengeance. 2012 Year of Liquid.
Previous Code A qualifier experience: 1 previous attempt. Lost 0-2 to FXOkAsyu.
Players such as LastShadow and cArn have said that MajOr is the best foreign Terran. His results don't reflect that, however. MajOr has a negative reputation, but with 2 accounts in Korean GM, there is no denying MajOr's skill or work ethic. He is good, and he just keeps getting better. With a plane ticket in June to leave Korea if he doesn't qualify this time around, there will be a sense of urgency for MajOr. Maybe he will finally deliver on all the potential he has.
GSTL starts on the 28th, and TLO said about 2 weeks ago that he was leaving for Korea in 2 weeks, so I'm guessing he will definitely be in Korea for these.
Fun fact: TLO has never failed in any GSL qualifier he has attempted. Not that he's ever tried anything close to as hard as these qualifiers are. TLO's creativity is a sure benefit, as some of the crazy strategies he does (he has defeated MarineKing before, remember?) are sure to confuse any poor Koreans he plays. Like his teammates HayprO and Jinro, he refuses to accept a charity seed, wishing to earn it himself. Well, here's his opportunity.
Previous Code A qualifier experience: 1 previous attempt. Lost to AL.DeathAngel 0-2.
A lot of you may not be familiar with this guy. He is living (he may not be anymore, we need updates, man >_<) in the Prime house. He recently switched to Protoss from Terran. I don't know how good his Protoss is (or his Terran for that matter) but it seems unlikely that it will be at a competitive level with the stacked field having switched so recently. All Radrel wants is to at least make it to the finals. It would be an amazing underdog story if he managed that, let alone managed to qualify. Let's see if his time living with Prime has helped him out.
Previous Code A qualifier experience: 1 previous attempt. Lost 0-2 to ZeNEXLife
TriMaster is the king of the upset. He wins when he shouldn't, and his initial MLG run is proof of that. While he hasn't really done anything notable since then, he recognizes that, and has gone to Korea to train in the MvP house to attempt to remedy that. He could make a repeat of his MLG run and come out of nowhere to beat some sick good players.
Previous Code A qualifier experience: 6 previous attempts. Made Ro4 twice. Last time lost to TSL.RevivaL 0-2.
SLoG was one of the major parties involved in the fOu-FXO merge, briefly moving onto Eclypsia, but now once again teamless. SLoG has a ton of experience in the Code A qualifiers, and has made a good run on 2 different occasions. If he gets a good bracket, don't be too surprised to see SLoG making a deep run into his Code A bracket, or even qualifying. He's a very underrated player and his months of Korean training have significantly helped him, but we don't really get to see it due to the low amount of tournaments he enters.
Previous Code A qualifier experience: 3 previous attempts. Lost 0-2 to oGsJookTo, 0-2 to CreatorPrime and 0-2 to MvPTAiLS.
The Warcraft III legend, ToD, has had ridiculously bad (almost comically bad) luck in his Code A brackets, consistently going up against some of the strongest players in the qualifiers. ToD has made good runs in online tournaments before. He can definitely go toe to toe with anyone, but has to go that one step beyond to turn those into wins. ToD is very talented and this is once again a chance to show it.
NightEnD recently arrived in Korea and immediately started owning up Korean GM. I personally found this surprising, as I never thought of NightEnD as one of the top foreign Protosses, but he's certainly going above and beyond to prove me wrong. Apparently, he's able to hang with the most solid of Koreans, but how will that translate to a LAN event of this sheer difficulty? Time will tell, but one thing we can all agree on is that we hope to see NightEnD in GSL and hear his heavenly voice in GSL winners interviews.
Carn couldn't have lost to Slayers Yugioh in the qualifiers, Yugioh has never been knocked out of code A and thus has never played in the qualifiers...Otherwise, a very nice writeup

LoL :D. That made me laugh out and it would be such a good reason for him to be in code A. xD
On another note i really hope for Jinro, LastShadow and MajOr will make it through since i feel they might be the most undervalued of the players listed.

Where do you get this info? Jinro said awhile back that he would accept a seed now if offered to him, and that his opinion had changed. I have NEVER heard HayprO and TLO say that - I'm pretty sure at this point anyone would accept the Code A seed as opposed to attempting to qualify.

I didn't see Jinro say that.
I remember TLO and HayprO saying it in interviews somewhere.
I think there's a really good chance we'll see foreigners advance. MajOr, ls, NightEnD, and maybe DeathAngel wouldn't surprise me at all if they qualified.
Nightend in my opinion is the only foreigner that has a legit chance to qualify. With more and more top players dropping to code B like Lucky, sC, Inca, NaDa, Soccer, Alicia it seems unlikely that any of the foreigners will stand a chance. Did I mention the other players that are already in code B like TOP, Losira, Yonghwa ?
I'm kinda willing to bet that at least one foreigner will qualify this time, at least I feel that chances are higher than never before (except maybe before the first GSL). But who knows...
great writeup... that's a lot of potential foreigners, the odds of at least one making it through are better than ever! I'm betting on HuK and SaSe... maybe Jinro too
sase tlo major deathangel and nightend have the best chances to qualify i think but it will be really really hard... (maybe tod will be back in shape for this and own face )
also: 2012 the year of liquid? it's already may MAYbe they should start with the year of liquid soon...
Excellent write up. Personally, I want to see Major advance, his mutlitasking and micro is amazingly good. But I do wonder if he has nerve issues because he never really performs well in tournaments.
Very interesting post, the nice video adds some more to the informations: thanks for the writeup, now I know all the foreigners who'll try THE hardest tournament in the world!
Personal prediction: at least one between Huk, Jinro, Major, Sase and Nightend will make it. Not to take anything away from the others, but Huk and Sase proved that they can compete with anyone and win more than once, Jinro almost had it last time, Major is THE underachieving talent of the whole scene and Nightend did completely surprised me in almost a month of streaming.
Seriously great writeup, didnt even realize that many foreigners will be trying. And with SaSe, Huk, Nightend, Major in the run, I hope at least one of them can qualify. Maybe even all of them - depending on the bracket. Also Banjo, TLO, Tod, Lastshadow and Jinro are not without chances. I hope as many of them qualify as possible.
There is noone out of these guys I would more love to see in Code A than NightEnd. He is such a funny and nice person, he definately deserves it. I hate his playstyle, but I really hope it will work out for him .
This has probably already been mentioned, but your statement about TLO is a bit unfair, since he played in and qualified for one (two? can't remember) GSL open season(s). Ok, not a Code A, but nonetheless qualifying for a GSL is an achievement not to be belittled. Update: Qualified for both season 1 and 2.

What did I say? I mentioned that he has qualified for every GSL he has tried out for, but the Code A qualifiers are 100x times harder than the Open Season qualifiers.
@ the other guy: No, mOOnGLaDe is not in Korea. Dunno where you got that idea.
If your dates are right then this overlaps with the Red Bull lan which runs from the 25th-27th, which would exclude Huk and Sase from participating, possibly more once all the players are announced.
Personally, I would give Huk the best chance of qualifying right now, simply because he has the kind of experience in GSL only Jinro (and now Naniwa, though he is already Code S for Season 3) can match among the foreigners attempting to qualify. I think Tod/SaSe/Jinro/Haypro all have at least a relative chance of qualifying, depending on their brackets. Honestly, Tod is an absolute beast and his luck in qualifiers for Code A has been nothing short of ridiculous, I wouldn't be surprised if he made a run through one of the lesser brackets.
Jinro should have qualified by now, I don't understand why he has such inconsistent results in the past 6 months.
cArn - If he can get himself back up to form from practice, very maybe. I can see him maybe getting to Code A one season.
Deathangel - I can see him qualifying for Code A. As for whether he's Code S material or not.... Maybe. If he were to go into twelve-hour-a-day mode, not get burned out and rigorously practice a playstyle that could take out Code S Koreans, maybe.
desRow - Nooooo. Actually in all seriously, he could maybe hit Code A but only if he tries ridiculously hard. Otherwise, results are something I haven't seen from this guy.
HayprO - Doubtful, especially not in today's progaming climate. He's been practicing in a teamhouse in Sweden a lot over the last few months and the best he managed was a decent showing in his group and taking out NesTea 2 - 1 in a ZvZ series at MLG Providence.
HuK - The Top 3 Bieber lookalike has slumps and yet always manages to come back. At one point he just about mangaed to scrape Code S, didn't quite perform too well but still maintained his place in the premier division of the GSL. Then he goes out and wins Dreamhack and Homestory Cup 3. Then he didn't do so well again and won MLG Orlando. Since then, his performance has been between acceptable and subpar. If he recovers from his slump then there's a small chance he could get into Code A without a welfare seed.
Jinro - Maybe. However, his mindset needs to change severely for that to happen. Apparently he once said to rakaka.se that he may consider quitting if he remained in this slump. The rest of 2012 is going to be critical for Chinro, and if moving into a new place with teammates such as Hero, Zenio, TLO, Haypro and TaeJa helps his mindset hugely and improves his confidence, I can see this sleeping beast unleashed.
LastShadow - Not sure, not really seen him play.
MajOr/WinDy/AnnaProsser - Juan has a moderate chance of making it to Code A. He's got two accounts in Korean GM for fuck's sake.
TLO - TLO is inconsistent. While definitely improved from his 2011 days where he suffered severely and had to take a break due to carpal tunnel and had an identity crisis on what race he wanted to play, TheLittleOne will probably fail this Code A qualifier. However, TLO when in good shape is not to be taken lightly. Getting used to the Korean metagame and playstyle will take some time, especially since there is a clear regional divide due to the lack of cross-region support, as it's not HOTS time yet.
SaSe - Not a very consistent player either. I doubt he'll make it into Code A.
Radrel - No. Especially if he just recently switched races.
TriMaster - Possible. His MLG run was brilliant and he has potential, and has been practicing in Korea for some time now.
SLoG - Very unlikely.
ToD - I dunno about this Code A qualifier but maybe the next one. It wasn't that long ago that the FnaticRC team house was opened up, after all.
Nightend - He hasn't been in Korea that long. I'd give him two or three Code A qualifiers before he breaks the finals.

Unfortunate if true.
I'll wait for confirmation from them (or someone else) first. The date for the Code A qualifiers only just came out and now that they know there is a clash they could cancel on Red Bull or something, depending on how priority attending these are for them.
Hmm, are you sure TLO has never tried to qualify for Code A? I think at least back when Jinro, TLO, Haypro and Huk were Liquid's korean crew they all went to the qualifiers. But maybe I'm wrong.
Great post by the way. It's always nice to get valuable info from this very "underground" event. Let's hope Artosis takes his camera with him and tweets constantly. We'll be spamming our F5s.
Btw, Lastshadow looks like a male model. I guess he's not the typical gamer stereotype. No homo, but he is pretty.

Yes, you are wrong. TLO left Korea the first time before Code A even existed.

It's all on Liquipedia:
On [August 28, 2010] TLO qualified for the GOMTV Starcraft II Open 1 after going through Group B1. He would advance to the Round of 32 before losing to house mate oGsHyperdub 1-2. TLO's victory in the first set would become one of the most viewed VoDs on GOMTV. TLO qualified yet again for GSL Season 2 where he encountered former BW player SangHo in the Round of 64. He would ultimately lose 1-2 in what would be his final televised match as a Terran player.
In early November [2010], it was announced that for unspecified personal reasons, TLO would return to [Germany]. [...] Although his qualifications in the previous 2 GSLs would qualify for Code A for the 2011 January Tournament, TLO would choose to remain in Germany instead.

His results from the Open Seasons would have placed him in Code A.
He DID NOT win Code B, which remains elusive to foreigners.

goddamnit, SaSe's not going to try to qualify again? Well i guess RBL has a better payout guarranteed and it was an invitational, but i can't help but feel bummed out

Anyways, I'll be rooting for NightEnd hardcore, really hope this man makes it through! But regardless of nationality, I just hope that the better players make it into Code A.
Out of the foreigners, I'll definitively be rooting for HayprO, ToD and NightEnD! Hope they can go far, and I wish that they'd be broadcasting it like they did before for a season or two ;;

Heck yeah! Livestreams for qualifiers! Thanks alot Khaldor and gomtv!
Too bad that so many foreigners are missing the qualifiers, but definitely the right decision for them. I am just a bit sad that this will scratch on the GSL's reputation to be THE sc2 league out there.
Gorrilla terran fighting!!Good luck to all the foreigners. On a side note- If Huk gets another seed I will be so pissed (not that i don't like him- its just that he has dropped out of the gsl two seasons in a row...)

I don't really think that it does at all, to be honest. Code S is still the pinnacle of SC2, a few people skipping qualifiers doesn't change that.

They have 2 free code S spots? who is going to get them? Stephano isnt going to Korea yet I think. And why would Huk and Sase both skip qualifiers for the most important tour in the world? Of course they have a better chance in Redbull Battlegrounds, still there is plenty of big tours to join outside qualifier weekend to practice for.

I can virtually gurantee that iron squid has given GOM an excuse to seed MMA the other one is left up in the air though, perhaps violet but he doesn't seem interested in the GSL.
Is cArn like a super nice and cool guy, or why does he get so much hype from the foreign casters in Korea? I hear wolf, khaldor and even artosis talk about him frequently, but the one account linked here isn't even top 25 KR masters. I don't remember him ever having any strong performances, and even the dubbed 'cArn' build seemed similar to what other KR terrans have done before and MKP has done much better since, but I might be mistaken on that one. Last official news I heard about him was his team dropping him because he wasn't training as hard as he promised them, or something along those lines (as OP mentions). Does he have some great results at some point that I'm not familiar with?
Also, I like the 'Man of a Million Names' title for Major. Probably the most polite and appropriate label I've heard for him.
