They did things like this for WoW all the time, 50/50 chance of it going either way imo. The just don't know yet if they can have it ready in time and they don't want people to say they lied lol.

nice now blizzard will have implemented half of the features from wc3 and sc. Even players on wc3 have bots that save games upon a player disconnecting and allow for the game to pick up right before the player drops...

Excited for clan support, and non-ranked matchmaking sounds amazing - I never even thought about it as a possibility! It'll be great for training up off-race etc. So exciting!
Really, with global play and resume from replay the benefits of LAN are pretty minimal...

Oh were is the announcement of better stats tracking? (ratio on maps/race etc) I haven't forgotten one of the more forsaken features that blizzard never gave us.

I hope this global play comes standard with a single purchase of HoTS, and not just be some feature that we have to pay additional for, i.e. all Blizz does is incorporate a relocalizer tool built in to the game, but you still have the purchase the additional EU/KOR/SEA account.
