As previously mentioned, the North American Star League will have 5 Starcraft II guest casters accompanying the NASL casting team to cover the NASL Season 3 Grand Finals and the Blizzard World Championship Series: Canada Nationals. Specifically, the StarCraft II casters joining MrBitter, RotterdaM, Frodan, and Gretorp for the NASL Grand Finals event in Toronto are Day[9], InControl, IdrA, Kadium, and Elemental.

Teaming up with MrBitter, RotterdaM, Frodan, and Gretorp, these 5 guest casters will help cover the 78 professional StarCraft II matches that will be taking place throughout the weekend between the NASL and WCS tournaments.

While Day[9], MrBitter, RotterdaM, Frodan, Gretorp, Incontrol, and IdrA may be found on both the primary and secondary streams during the event, Kadium and Elemental will be found on the French Stream, where they will predominately be covering The WCS Canada Nationals matches.

Exactly lol, it actually quite difficult to go there no matter where you live in toronto.

Not gonna complain though, it's closer than NYC or Columbus :D

Not really. It's pretty close to the 427 and 401. Downtown to the venue is about 25 minutes (depending on traffic).

Admittedly, the location isn't great though. But it is right by the airport so that's a big ass plus for anyone flying in. And there is parking everyone for us Torontonians.

The International Centre? In the HEART of Toronto? Let's calm down a bit here, it's basically in Mississauga .

I hope that NASL remind the pros that to come to Canada, the koreans will need a Canadian Visa. An american, and americans just need passport to get here.

I guess It's good to be near the airport, but kind of sucks its so far away from the City.

It'd be kind of like hosting the MLG New York Arena in Newark, New Jersey.

Toronto is the 4th of 5th biggest population in North America, ahead of places like Detroit, also has a large korean population, it's really crazy this is the first large thing there.

Hmmm, $25 isn't too bad for a full weekend of gaming exhibitions and tournaments...I'd be more compeled to buy a ticket right now if there was more info though >_>

Also wouldn't mind shelling out extra money for things like seats closer to the stage and stuff.

That's just how GO Transit does their routing for Google Maps. The times are fairly accurate though.

Yea the only big plus about the location is the near vincintiy to the airport. There would be an additional travel time to actually get to the "heart of Toronto" in which I thought would be downtown, where the MTCC and Direct Energy Center could be potential candidates for downtown locataions.

Btw I'd pay $25 for a 2-day live event.

big fat LOL, to all the people complaining about the location, yes it does suck. But honestly as someone from the area i dont think NASL has the funds to book a large convention center, downtown such as the metro convention center. When they announced this, if you have a shred of common sense you wouldve guessed it would be near the airport, maybe somewhere like doubletree. I can't believe how ungrateful some people are, they finally bring a BIG NAME event to Canada, we already have people in here asking "wtf why we going up there". Sure this really isnt the "heart of the city", but this is already such an amazing event coming to us.

Thanks NASL, def made my summer :D

the only thing is with the event being held at the international centre which is near the airport a lotta the players wont be able to leave the area and go site seeing, or find something different they wanna eat etc. There are taxis but the rates are really expensive (imo) . From what ive seen from tournament coverage lotta players like to go around, eat see stuff. That might not be as accessible (or interesting) in the area which NASL will be held. But again, downtown toronto convention centers are just too expensive, its hard to really make everyone happy!

who would've thought?

a major SC2 eSports event coming to Mississauga!
Another big win for Hazel over big bad Toronto.

"the International Centre has been home to Canada's largest and most popular events over the last 40 years"

i'd say the Metro Convention Centre, the CNE and the Skydome/Rogers Centre are the 3 contenders for this claim in the greater toronto area. I don't know about other parts of Canada though.

"located in the heart of Ontario"
Ontario is pretty big...
its like saying any city in Texas is located in the "heart" of Texas.

i say the "Canadian Championships" will also be held during this event.

It's pretty much on the Toronto-Mississauga border. Still, hardly "the heart of Toronto".

Right around the corner from me :D

There's not much to do in that area, lots of hotels, the Internation Centre is basically right beside the airport.

They aren't going to release some premium VIP pass or something, are they?? I don't want to buy general if there's a better option

Venue location is ideal for an event like this. It is not ideal for a sightseeing adventure (which a large LAN event is not).

MTCC is waaaaay too expensive for any esports organization to afford. The direct energy center is probably the only realistic semi-downtown option. And that is a huge hassle to get to from the airport + there aren't as many hotels/motels around there.

Honestly the international center really is the best choice (short of the MTCC).

I wonder where twitch.tv is going to hold the afterparty. I can think of a few awesome places.

pretty much exactly why they can only hold it @ the international. as for the site seeing, really not that important to us fans and what not but a lotta the players seem to like to get around and check out wherever they are.

im happy NASL is coming to Toronto, and I will be attending, but do not claim the event is located in the HEART of Toronto, lol the only thing in that area is strip clubs and the airport.

Good choice of a place because of easy access: next to airport and GO station.

After party at Croc Rock downtown? That place just reeks the need for a nerdgasm.

Nothing wrong with the location, but it is totally false to say "the heart of Toronto". The address is even in Mississauga, not Toronto, lol. Anyways, cool that such a big event will be near Toronto.

Question: Can I bring my baby in without buying him a ticket? He'll only be 5 months, so he won't take up a seat.

Pay-at-the-door options will probably be based on how many tickets they have left on the day of.

They probably don't advertise it yet because there is a chance they sell out.

Anything downtown Toronto comes with a huge price tag, so it's not surprising that they wouldn't spring for something like that, whether or not NASL has those types of funds.

And with this word that there will be three other events going on (we'd have to assume in the same venue), they're getting a respectable place minutes from the airport and a bevy of hotels, taking a huge hassle out of the logistics of getting a bunch of players from the airport to downtown Toronto and wherever else they'll need to go.

That said, and as others have pointed out, this isn't anywhere close to the heart of Toronto. It's in Mississauga and quick look at a map for those not from Ontario will quickly showcase the discrepancy. The area around the airport (and where the International Centre is) is just a mass of highways, roads, and hotels/things relating to hotels.

It's not going to be the greatest in terms of activities during downtime, but again, logistically it works a bit better, and it's only a two day event. There are still some places they can hit up in 'Sauga if they wish to cab or what not, but something tells me they won't have the time anyways.

Seriously, anyone travelling from outside Toronto that thinks that the International Centre is in the heart of Toronto will be pissed. It's like saying that LAX is in the "heart" of LA. Ummmm, no.

They might want to book hotel room closer to downtown or rent a car if they want to do anything besides watch Starcraft and see a highway overpass.

Maybe if you wear dark clothing, you can sneak into the venue during the night time. Alternatively, you can just pay the $25.

LOL, Mississauga is not Toronto! It's so far away from the core of downtown, like an hour drive and not accessible by public transit AT ALL. Regardless I will be there for sure. It just seems like its a bit in the middle of nowhere.

Is it possible to get there by intercity bus like greyhound/Go-bus? Not the train or taxi or driving? I might have to carpool

I live in Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge area.

GTA would be more accurate. Pearson is in Mississaga but mostly everyone calls it's the Toronto airport, so I guess this isn't that off.

It makes sense to be near the airport. They want to make it accessible to as much people (not just local) as possible. It's already cheap for us locals that don't have to cross border or fly.

Because Canada doesn't have events that are as big as this one. This being the only premier tournamet being held in Canada in the near future will bring a lot of fans out while USA might have a bigger fanbase it is already oversaturated. Use your brain next time

In fact...I don't think the CAD has been below the USD in several years now.

Players should ask to be paid in Australian though .

From what ive seen from tournament coverage lotta players like to go around, eat see stuff. That might not be as accessible (or interesting) in the area which NASL will be held. But again, downtown toronto convention centers are just too expensive, its hard to really make everyone happy!

Well first of all, players won't have time during the event to sightsee, they'll be too busy competing. If they do spend an extra day or two in the area after the event, it's not a big deal to get to DT Toronto from the area. If you just flew several thousand KM to get to the NASL S3 Finals, what's another 20 km to go to DT Toronto? It's a rounding error, it's trivial.

As someone that has traveled much of the World for business, I can tell you that making the time to sightsee is the hard part. Traveling the last 20 km to sightsee once you're there is easy.

They should have booked a bigger venue....

There are 2 million people in the GTA core alone. That's not even counting mississauga, scarborough, hamilton, burlington, oakville etc.

This is by far the most dense population outside of Korea that a major tournament has been held in,

Guy has a point as well. We're talking about the Greater Toronto Region opposed to Toronto itself.

It's good for anyone who's coming outside of Ontario/Quebec though as the Airport is right there.

I'm not surprised tickets sold out so fast, but this is the first time I'm hearing the event went on sale, lol.

Oh well. Don't think I would be around town in either case.

It's not amazing, but it's WORTH watching, which is important.

They fill a gap between huge events like MLG, dreamhack, ipl, TSL, etc.

Each night there are people to watch play almost, and they have beeen getting 3-8k viewers on average every day.

Then their big events are actually nice with huge pools and great players and rivalries like MC/Puma

I think they underestimated the demand by a lot and that won't happen. The max the biggest hall can hold is close to 1800.

Hopefully the next time a big event comes out they decide to one up it and go with the Direct Energy Centre at the Ex.

We should be able to get 10,000 people to show-up, but on the production side there's still a lot of improvement that could be done.

Build it and the people will come.

I guess the Metro Toronto Convention centre is not big enough?

Great that they're coming to Ontario. Too bad they picked a crappy location so far removed from all that is worth seeing in TO. Downtown TO is an awesome place to be, with easy access via train and bus.

I'd say it is pretty damn awesome.

This sold out already? Damn. Maybe they'll add more seats and get more people in there. This ought to show how starved Canada is for some Sc2

Might not be too late to change venues Sc2 pregame to Jays game at Rogers center with 70k showing up!? j/k

Not exactly. The previous two finals we're held about 100km from Downtown Los Angeles, and about the same distance from San Diego and Orange Counties. That's about 10 million people, give or take 2 million.

I wonder if the WCS Canada finals had anything to do with NASL choosing the venue in the first place. Like, did Blizzard persuade them to go to Toronto?

Soon? Try this summer.

Valve's Dota 2 International is in Seattle this summer. Again with a 1 million+ prize pool.

If it's a success, I'm guessing someone watching will be interested in doing a SC2 event there

The Greater Toronto Area is roughly 6 million people. And the majority of that live within an hour of the venue. And pretty much all of it has relatively accessible public transit to the area.

But yea, I guess you're right. Ontario, California is probably a bit more dense. Although it probably isn't as accessible to that population.

I am thinking of having a bbq the day before, maybe have some people from TL over to my place for some burgers/beer. I live uptown Toronto (10 minutes from the North York Centre subway). If anyone's interested shoot me a PM maybe I can get something going, there are also tons of netcafes nearby if we wanted to have some SC2 games as well.

Sorry if this question sounds totally stupid, I've been a bit out of the SC2 loop lately.
I'm planning on going to this event, and I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a chance Day[9] would be coming out to cast the finals. (I didn't see anything posted on who was going to do it, if it IS up and I'm blind please tell me)
My best friend is a huge fan and it's her birthday that weekend, and it would just make it the best birthday ever if he was there.

Man, I've been absolutely loving these games and I can't wait to meet these players in Toronto! Gettin' my Goliathus signed for sure. Do you think asking HuK to sign a TL mouse mat would offend him? and will players who don't make it to the finals show up to hang out and support their teams anyway? thx

Updated WildCard and Playoffs Brackets:
The winners of the WildCards will be ordered for Playoffs seeding based on their seed value going into the WildCards. They will then be assigned seeds in the Playoffs according to this order. WildCard Seed 1 becomes Playoffs seed 9, and so on.

For instance, Thorzain is seeded as #16 in the WildCards, so if he wins the WildCards, he would be the 8th highest seed, and would then face Puzzle in the Playoffs. Meanwhile, if Ret wins, he is the highest seed player in the WildCards, and thus would face DeMuslim in the playoffs.

What's the prize-pool looking like currently? Can we get a clarification on that? Payout to top 8 only? Or top 24? Or top 16? Seems relevant with this structure and only top 8 going into finals.

Yeah, I'm interested as well. I know its my fault for waiting so long to book tickets, but if more come available I'd love to snatch some up and I'd be interested on hearing if more will become available.

Ack! What a confusing bracket setup! I've been staring at that chart for 10 minutes and I think I finally got it, I think.

You use Ret and Thorzain as examples because Ret is seed 1 and Thorzain is seed 16. If Ret wins, regardless of how the other 7 matches turn out, he's guaranteed to be #1 seed still. If Thorzain wins, regardless of how the other 7 matches go, he's guaranteed to be #8, because everyone else in the wildcards had a higher entry seed than him.

But what about the other 14 players? What their final playoff seed is dependent on how the other wildcard matches go. Take Strelok for example. He faces TT1 in his wildcard match as seed 2. If He wins his match, and Ret also wins his match, Strelok's final seed will still be 2, and he will face Stephano in the playoffs. But what if Strelok wins his match and Ret loses? Since Ret is the only player that had a higher entry seed than Strelok coming into the wildcards, that means Strelok becomes the #1 seed, and he faces DeMuslim in the playoffs.
For TT1, if he wins and Thorzain wins, he becomes #7 seed, and he faces HerO. But if he wins and Thorzain loses, there is nobody with a lower seed than him (15), and he becomes #8 seed, facing Puzzle.

And that's just second simplest scenario for a player. For the wildcard players seeded 3 to 14, it gets even more complicated to the point where there's so much depending on this or that other player winning or losing, they have no idea what their final seed will be and hence no idea who they will be playing in the playoffs.

The way NASL.tv explains it, it sounds really straightfoward, but it's only straightforward from Ret and Thorzain's perspective. They know who they will face if they win their match. For the rest of the players, it's a tossup.

Really disappointed that the NASL Toronto finals is going to be final 8 instead of final 16. How are they gonna stretch out an 8 player tournament over 2 days? Sounds like there's gonna be a lot of snore time.

This is to be the first premier tournament to be held in my hometown and I was really looking foward to seeing as many of the top international stars compete live in person. Now that number is gonna be cut in half. What if Stephano, MC, DeMuslim, Puma, etc. are knocked out of the tournament at the Round of 16? Then they won't be coming to Toronto and I and all the other Canadian fans like myself won't be seeing them.

The WCS qualifiers is a sorry substitute for not having the NASL top 16. Promoting local players is great and it's nice that they'll get to play at a big event, but watching unknown semi-professional players just isn't as exciting to watch as watching players you already know and love.

The only people I recognize from the Canadian qualifiers page on liquipedia are Ryze and Attero. I assume HuK and TT1 are going to be competing as well whether or not they make it to the top 8 in the NASL? Any word about whether other Canadian pros will be showing up? (Kiwikaki, Slush, Drewbie, dde, Scarlett(!), Desrow, Stalife)

Agreed, I am also very upset about this change in format. The regular season seems all the more meaningless. You can get first place in the entire league and you still need to win another BO5 to make it to the offline event. Last season top 2 in your group guaranteed you a spot at the offline finals, which is far simpler a format and far better for the players. Overall very disappointed with this change by NASL.

Also, I question whether or not the players are fully aware of this change in format. From watching recent interviews with HuK and him talking about his upcoming tournaments, he lists NASL as if he thinks he's already at the offline finals, when in reality he still needs to win a likely difficult BO5 to make it there.

It's not too late to mend the schedule and invite the top 16 to Toronto, NASL! Really, it isn't!

To help explain it a bit further:

  1. Take the list of winners of the WildCard games.
  2. Sort them in order numerically by their original Seed #.
  3. The 1st name is WildCard Seed 1, which becomes Playoffs Seed 9.
  4. The 2nd name is WildCard Seed 2, which becomes Playoffs Seed 10.
  5. The 3rd name is WildCard Seed 3, which becomes Playoffs Seed 11.
  6. The 4th name is WildCard Seed 4, which becomes Playoffs Seed 12.
  7. The 5th name is WildCard Seed 5, which becomes Playoffs Seed 13.
  8. The 6th name is WildCard Seed 6, which becomes Playoffs Seed 14.
  9. The 7th name is WildCard Seed 7, which becomes Playoffs Seed 15.
  10. The 8th name is WildCard Seed 8, which becomes Playoffs Seed 16.

Yes, the 4th seeded person in the WildCard race could end up anywhere from 9th to 12th Playoffs seed, depending on who wins that was ranked better than him. If no one in the WildCards who was ranked better than him wins in the WildCards, he becomes the top person to survive the WildCards, and thus becomes Seed 9 in the Playoffs. If everyone ranked better than him in the WildCards survives the WildCards, then he becomes Seed 12 in the Playoffs.

This is why the WildCards are wild: how you are seeded in the playoffs is contingent on who else survives the WildCards.

The Divisional winners, plus the next 3 highest ranking 2nd place divisional finishers, were all awarded with a guaranteed playoffs spot, just like in the past. The next 16 people simply have to go through one more round of elimination before they can move on to the Playoffs.

We need more tickets! This is the first good tournament in Canada, it has very high demand! Wish I had heard about this sooner, please give more tickets for sale.

Thanks for the update. I actually just got an email saying tickets were available for me 'for a limited time', but when I clicked there weren't any. I'm guessing the limited time is quite short since I checked before I went to sleep and first thing when I got up!

Yeah, same. People on the wait list should have at least 24 hours to claim their tickets, what with time zone differences and all that.

Thank you NASL! I'd much rather watch amazing CSL and WCS matches live at the finals in Toronto than these mediocre RO16 matches. Ret vs Demuslim? MC vs Galaxy? HerO vs Ryung? HuK vs Ganzi? What a snooze-fest.

Brilliant move with the format change for the finals. I'm also quite pleased at the prospect that we might not even see HuK, Stephano, MC, etc. at the finals depending on how the matches go.

Overall very excited for the WCS&CSL event. Should be some top notch play and make for an exciting weekend! That little 8 man side tournament might be decent too.

Sadly, I feel the same way. I was really looking forward to the 16 players. With only 8 there I feel kind of cheated. First big tournament in Canada, and we get 6 series?

I emailed them about the waitlist email that I got this morning and here was my response (for anyone else in the same boat):

Good morning!

The waitlist system cycles through entries as tickets become available. If the ticket is not claimed within the set time, it is offered to the next person in line. Although that email expired, you are still on the waitlist, so it could still cycle through to you again.

GLHF and hope to see you at our event!

I guess I will have to be diligent about checking my email and hope that it doesn't cycle to me again while I'm asleep.

According to the brackets...... PuMa and HerO can't play in the finals. The latest they can meet is the semis.... T-T.....

I got one, but I was hoping to buy two. Guess I'll just readd myself to the waitlist and hope for a second ticket..

If I can't get a second ticket, I'll probably just sell my one, so we will just have to wait and see.

Edit: Just got my second ticket. Looks like my buddy and I will be ditching our wives for the weekend and making the trek from Ottawa to TO. Pretty excited!

Are there going to be tickets sold at the door during the weekend? I'd imagine not everyone is going all 3 days so maybe the venue won't be full all the time?

Pretty much this. I'm Canadian through and through, but there aren't really a lot of high level Canadian players, which means that watching WCS is going to be an utter waste of time. CSL? Snore. They're bad. No offence, but they're bad. There are Platinum players on my school's CSL team. No, I don't want to watch that. I want to watch the Ro16.

Don't get me wrong, the Canadian scene is quite strong when compared to the overall North American scene, and I've always lamented at the disparity between Canadian WCS and USA WCS. But, despite that, the Canadian WCS pales in comparison to the world class players we see in the NASL RO16.

beggars cant be choosers i suppose well still get some amazing games from the games we will see from the finals, plus since tickets have been so scarce and NASL has had to talk to the venue about maximizing seats that should send a clear message to tournaments, come to Canada and well buy every seat you can offer

now all we need to do is show our passion at the event and we might see an MLG come to Canada soon

If MC and HerO don't make it through.... I'm going to cry. this ro8 only at the finals is kind of bullshit.

That being said, I'm going no matter what(Got my tickets today woot!) and gonna cheer my ass off, even for the CSL even if its just plat level players. Gotta have a good showing and hopefully we can get MLG down here :D

I wish I could have paid the 50... premium was sold out long before I ordered my tickets T.T but still Got my hotel room booked now! and will still be pumped to go if they don't make it trhough. just going to cry a little at missing the chance to get a MC autograph because they changed the schedule to include CSL and WCS instead of ro16 T.T

They werent available on day one when I bought my ticket. I got my ticket hours after they were initially available and premium didnt exist. Oh well as long as the screens are making it clear that we can see them in the non premium seats I will be very happy.

I forgot to purchase tickets and then they were sold out. I was sad.

I looked today and there were tickets. I bought one and I'm happy now. Odd that some people seem to be struggling with the wait list and I wasn't on one at all but found tickets anyway. Whatever, I'm happy. :D

Mississauga? Kinda far! But I'm gonna try to get a ticket, but I'm also offering a ride share (Didn't know whether to open a thread or not) coming from Richmond Hill/North York. I can even pick you up at Finch station if needed.

YESSSS!! Got the tickets. Who needs a ride????

Also... Does anyone know a cheap motel to rent around that area? Super 8 is the cheapest one I found so far... But it's still like $80 for one night (Though you can fit 4 people in it).

Discounted hotel room information is as follows:

The North American Star League is pleased to now offer discounted accomodations for those interested in attending the NASL Grand Finals this July at the International Centre in Ontario, Canada.

Specifically, the NASL has arranged for a discounted block of rooms at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, which is conveniently located across from the Toronto Pearson International Airport and is within short walking distance of the event venue.

NASL attendees who register through the Event Reservation Portal will receive rooms for only $75 per night, which is a considerable discount from the hotel's standard rate of $125 per night. Additionally, attendees will receive a $6 discount on hotel parking. Hotel information is as follows:

Well, I'm happy again after stumbling onto the final NASL playoff stream before the grand finals in Toronto and hearing Mr. Bitter saying there was more tickets available. So I checked, and voila! 2 tickets for me! (the premium tickets are sold out though, but not sure how the seating arrangements for the different ticket types will be like)
Like others have said, 8 players is small for a finals, but it will be fairly cool nonetheless. Can't wait to see these players live, like Huk, Hero, ...
Going to be great.

Edit: Information on the first page. Missed it on my first read through. Apparently bold is hard to spot.

Has there been any kind of schedule released? Even just a rough idea of when it starts the first day would be nice!

Mississauga is a suburb outside of Toronto, and probably a better description of where Toronto International Airport is.

It's like Orange County to LA.

It's a 45 to 1 hour drive from the Airport to Downtown Toronto, but it's not like you're driving into wilderness. The city is just that huge. But anyone that thinks that they can stay at the Four Seasons hotel and watch Starcraft one day and walk to the CN Tower the next is fooling themselves.

You NEED a car in Toronto.

I am getting so excited for this! Seriously, I think the international SC2 community underestimates how passionate the ESPORTS fans are in Canada. It's going to be off the proverbial hook! It's finally a chance of Canada to prove our worth on the world stage of SC2.

And our boy HuK will be there! Yay!
Keep calm, carry on.

Hey guys,

Just reposting this here because I've gotten some PMs of interest.

If we have enough people interested, I'm planning to host a BBQ at my place for those that are making the trip to Toronto. We can drink some beers, have some grub, and shoot the shit. I also live within a 20 minute walk of several cyber cafes if people want to make a small drunken mission for some SC2 (i'd suggest LANing, but lol blizzard). If you want to bring computers to plug in to play some SC2 here, I have rogers wireless setup as well.

I live near the North York Centre subway stop, though my house is right off of Bathurst (so it's about a 20 minute walk from Yonge Street).

PM me or post in this thread if there's interest, and we can bang out some details/concrete plans. So stoked!!

The crowd will be awesome, but seriously, I wish they would've come up with a venue that's not (kind of) in the middle of nowhere. I live downtown, it's about an hour by bus/train to the venue, and I can't help but think a lot of people who are flying in won't get to see the actual city. Which sucks.

Like seriously, we've got an amazing bar/nightlife scene, probably the most diverse restaurant selection in the continent and a whole district of Korean food/bars/karaoke.

Any recommendations on what to do for a few hours on the friday? I get there on friday at like noon which is quite a bit of time. I should technically be practicing the entire time but as I haven't traveled outside of BC, ab and saskatchewan for like 12 years I can see myself wanting to explore for atleast a couple of hours.

Depends if you have a car or not really... the event location is pretty far out from like the downtown area of Toronto. If you have a car/ride I'd suggest driving into Toronto(Never thought I'd utter those words. Fuck Toronto Traffic!) and going to see the usual tourists spots like the CN tower and stuff.

Unfortunately, a couple hours doesn't buy you much since it's an hour to anywhere interesting via transit, which is similar to driving, faster if it's remotely busy:

53 min by transit to Yonge, or slightly longer to union station, can go straight from the airport. Costs 3$ for a single ride, or 2.50 if you buy a few at a time.

Some other places:

45 min to korea town from airport

CN tower, if you're into the touristy thing

I kinda like kensington market, not really for everyone though.

Basically depends on what you find interesting I guess.

At the end of the day it's about costs and convenience for the players. Yeah it's not downtown, but could NASL even afford something like the MTCC? Probably not. And being so close to the airport is a major plus for the players.

Then again, I live in Etobicoke and it's about a 15 minute drive for me so no complaints from me.

So I printed my Tickets out today(Bought mine plus 2 for friends) they are all in my name, the have a different code number though. Is it going to cause a problem that the name on the ticket is the same for all of them?

I assume it won't be due to the code being different, but I'd prefer to be 100% sure before hand.

People that want to visit the city have to figure out a way to get to the city or a subway station.

There should be airport shuttles, but I'm not sure.

I recommend getting off at Young and Dundas, which is the busiest part of the city.

Queen West is fun, lots of stores and things.

If you like clubbing with hoochies and frats guys, there's the clubs on Richmond.

If you like just wandering around, there's plenty to do and see assuming you can get you ass downtown and out of the wasteland around the Airport.

It's no different than arriving at LAX. You need a car to get past Inglewood and Compton before see anything interesting.

As I say in my post, the public transit goes right from the airport-- I gave transit links.

Hey everyone.

I just wanted to contribute my reflexions on the NASL finals in Toronto in a few weeks. This was prompted by my listening to the State of the Game ep. 72 VOD where JP talked mentioned the few disgruntled posters about it not actually taking place in Toronto but in Mississauga. While they were awkwardly trying to figure out if Ontario was a city or not and how far it is from Toronto, I began reflecting more so on it, as I too was disappointed to learn that it would take place so far from the downtown core.

For those not living in Toronto or who haven’t been there, the venue where the NASL finals will take place is situated next to the Pearson International Airport, which is located in Mississauga, a (rather large) suburb outside the city of Toronto. It will take place almost 20 miles (38 kms approx.) outside the downtown core of the city. It will essentially be held in the middle of nowhere, far from the densely populated sectors of the city.

My argument here will be that this is a missed occasion for esports in Toronto and in Canada. It assumes nonetheless that the event will be a great success, that people will have fun, and that, for those going, it will be a positive experience. I do argue, however, that it will have missed its target for promoting esports to an unknowing population basin, and it will give a lukewarm to negative experience to players and casters coming in from all over the world. In this sense, I believe it is doing a disservice to the esports community and to the Starcraft 2 community in Toronto.

Before continuing, this is not a rage against the NASL. I understand the nightmare that it is to coordinate and that logistics can be daunting. Having the event next to the airport will make it easier for the players, I understand. That is not the point. The point is to discuss the question of exposure and the “selling” of Canada as a great place to hold esports events.

First, the location severely amputates the exposure of esports to the greater population in Toronto. With such low population density and in a venue whose main focus is corporate events, I fear little to no people will actually walk next to the venue and discover Starcraft. Had it taken place in the downtown core, you have a few million people who will actively walk near the venue and be perplexed by what is taking place, either through billboards or other form of advertisement. In this sense, Starcraft would “invade” public space in Toronto and be talked about much more.

Currently, the area where the NASL finals will take place will not be able to seduce media attention as much as if it were at the U of Toronto or another venue where people work, eat and play. Having an event right near the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Global Television, City TV, TFO, Radio-Canada, The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, the National Post, etc. etc. would have helped to create a media buzz much that is better than most ad spots on any television station. Having access to players, casters and fans would help create better stories and better exposure for the sport. Having it next to the airport severely limits this possibility.

For casters and players, they will feel as though Toronto is just another suburban US city. Everything looks the same, nothing to note. In fact, they will likely not event set foot in the city of Toronto, unless they want to pay the $52 cab ride to go downtown, the hour and thirty minutes of transit, or take regional transportation which would be too much of a hassle to do. A downtown event would make players, casters and fans alike experience the city, have a sense for its culture, its food and its nightlife, giving them positive experiences, rather than a dull suburban cookie cutter experience. Tasteless said something today at the WCS UK in London about how he was so pleased for it to have been taken place in the “cool part of London”. He stated that, often, they cast in a place that is so far out from the city that it diminishes the experience. Those in “Toronto” will not experience the city.

I feel that the Greater Toronto Area is fortunate to have this event take place. I believe it is positive, and I’m glad. I do hope, however, that the next time around, these sorts of events will take place within the public space of the downtown core to help grow the sport and push it towards the mainstream, instead of holding it in the margins of the city and, in effect, keeping it in the margin of the media and society.

Nonetheless, I wish everyone a great time. I’m sure it’ll be a blast and I am looking forward to have another major tournament in Toronto.

Iberville have you ever considered that they couldnt have gotten a better venue and decided to put comfort of the players and spectators over hoping a few people see it and get kinda curious about it?

there might get more attention from people who probably wont care about esports if it was in downtown TO but it would alot harder for the palyers and spectatorts and casters to get to and from the event

correct me if im wrong but isnt the venue practically right next to an airport and a hotel offering a great deal? how many places in downtown TO could offer that?

Of course, I would love to see the games being held in the heart of downtown Toronto as much as the next guy, but that would be very very expensive. Financial feasibility is very important, and I would rather see a conservative NASL that is less prominent but is financially sustainable rather than one that is extragavant but running huge debts and is likely to go bankrupt.

Small steps. Season 3 may not be in the downtown area, but maybe after a successful season 3, NASL can then continue to grow and advance. Have patience in the growth of eSports.

I do not disagree with your statement one bit. It's practical, and hardcore esport fans will go.

The reflexion was simply due to to my understanding that we need to do more than simply cater to fans who will always show up even if it takes place in the middle of the saharan desert. Big tourneys will come to Canada every other year if that, which is why I wrote what I did.

I have no doubt that it'll be a great showing and a good event

There are actually a ton of venues in Toronto that can hold this event. There are two reasons they chose the location they did:

1) It's right by the airport and it's easy to get to.
2) It's very cheap compared to a lot of the other venues.
3) Schedule conflicts.

There is no shortage of venues that are more than capable of hosting this, but a lot of the really nice ones come with a hefty price tag.

P.S. This is coming from someone who used to organize events all over Toronto in 2002 to 2006.

there might get more attention from people who probably wont care about esports if it was in downtown TO but it would alot harder for the palyers and spectatorts and casters to get to and from the event

i think #1 is there biggest concern since season 1 aparently alot of koreans were complaining about getting to the venue enough to boycott season 2

Yeah and I'm sure they'll have no problems with their afterparties either. There's nightlife in the Sauga too.

Honestly, did you really need to write this wall of text to show how you wished it was downtown? All if not the majority of us wish it could be downtown but you're making it seem like it's the end of the world for having the finals just outside of Toronto. Let's just be thankful that a major tournament like this is actually close to where we live in the first place.

There are so many other major cities in North America that are dying to have events like this. Heck, I'm even surprised Toronto got a major SC2 tournament before Montreal did, because we've all seen how crazy their MLG barcrafts have been. If these finals turn out to be a success maybe MLG will pay attention and think about coming here too. And we *know* they will host their event downtown because they have the resources to do so, which at the end of the day is why the NASL finals are going to be where they are.

The ticket says "Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 8:00 AM - Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 11:00 PM (ET)"

But I think NASL's website said 9:00?

In other news, five additional casters will be at the finals!

http://nasl.tv/News/Article/201207039-starcraft-ii-casters-at-nasl-grand-finals

Though the North American Star League has 4 in-house casters, the NASL Grand Finals will have a bit more StarCraft II action happening at once than MrBitter, RotterdaM, Gretorp, and Frodan can cast. As such, the event will feature 5 guest casting personalities to help cover the NASL and Blizzard StarCraft II World Championship Series portions of the events.

Three of the casters will be rotating with the NASL casters on the main streams throughout the two-day event. The other two guest casters will be covering the French stream, which will offer a mix of content from the event with a particular focus on the Canada Nationals.

In addition to the team of StarCraft II casters, Hi-Rez Bart and FishStix will be casting the Tribes: Ascend Grand Finals with additional commentary and analysis from a special guest. CSL will have a team of casters for their event, as well.

Looking at the silhouettes in the picture, I think the guy on the far right looks like InControL? And that might be IdrA next to him? Man I hope so. :D

Edit: "[9] Casters" = Day9??

Would hope so, but they are flying all the players in on NASL budget to my understanding though. I would understand if of the 9 casters:

2 french

Of the 7 left:

4 standard casters

of the 3 left:

one or two?? for ascend

of the one or two left:

Host or something similar.

CSL has their own caster team. WCS perhaps has their own being paid by Blizz on their budget?

Then Im ok with it. But seriously Casters might be getting too much attention if there are more of them than players. I go to see people play not to listen to people tell me about who is playing.

And don't get me wrong, I like NASL and I love the fact that they are offering us in Canada an opportunity to watch a tournament with these high quality players. But at the same time, the pedestal we place casters on compared to the players really needs to be questioned and criticised in my opinion.

NASL is trying to solidify itself as a serious tournament and I can understand casters like Day9 lead to more online viewers and they need that to maintain their business. But still, as a community we need to make it clear and realise we watch for the players not the casters.

Why are all the players in GSL and Korea so good? The players are idolised, even just ONE star player can solidify enough money for a team in sponsorship dollars to support a B team that only needs to focus on the game and not how to make enough money to eat everyday. I mean IM has two star players and a slew of good players. But the good player teams dont have as much money as IM because they dont get the sponsors, they don't have the superstars to bring that money in. Here in NA it seems like the team that has the most sponsors (EG) has good players but are able to monetise and create a lot of Sponsor love thanks to marketing. Which is fine its good, but if we had more of that without the need to be a personality and a focus on performing as being key then maybe we could support more people playing well.

IF teams made the money most of the casters make I am sure that we could see team houses be more common in NA. If exposure of a team means more sponsors then what is better? 8 people playing in a finals, or 16 - 32 of them creating more buzz for their team and that teams sponsors.

Im getting off topic now though unfortunately.

That was my initial thought, but I imagine there must be some French Canadians up to the job?

I would quite surprised if Idra casted, after bombing out of his bracket, then forfeiting his last match, I doubt the league would then turn around and award him with a caster gig. Day9 and Incontrol both have casting histories with NASL, and they even feature Day9 in the finals promo video.

The schedule for the North American Star League Grand Finals event in Toronto this July 14th and 15th is now available. Home to the NASL Season Season 3 Grand Finals, the StarCraft II World Championship Series: Canada Nationals, the NASL Tribes: Ascend Championship, and the CSL Canadian Championship, the two-day eSports event is packed with exciting professional matches.

The venue hall will open at 10am each day to allow attendees a chance to select their favorite seat, whether that is as close to the front as possible or lining the aisles for a chance to high-five or fist bump their favorite pro gamer as players make their red carpet entrances to the main stage.

Alternatively, other fans may wish to gather around the secondary stage where players fighting on the second and third streams will often be found if they are not in the player area.

Wherever fans are watching from: whether in a seat, huddled around a secondary stage, or from the comfort of their homes, the schedule of matches will ensure there's always something exciting happening.

http://nasl.tv/News/Article/20120704uncertainty-in-nasl-season-3-grand-finals-bracket

Currently, the exact lineup of the players at the NASL Season 3 Grand Finals is slightly uncertain.

Due to the success thus far of Alicia and Puzzle in both NASL Season 3 and the GSTL, a scheduling conflict has arisen wherein the players might be called upon to compete with their team SlayerS in the GSTL during the same weekend that they are already committed to compete in the NASL Season 3 Grand Finals.

Simply, if SlayerS earns a victory in their next match in the GSTL, the team would advance to a match that would conflict with the timing of the NASL Season 3 Grand Finals.

Although efforts have been made with the parties involved to avoid this conflict, there is currently no solution in place that would either alleviate the players from their team obligations in the GSTL or enable the team to compete at another date so that the players may attend the NASL Grand Finals.

Thus, if it is confirmed that the two players are unable to attend the NASL Season 3 Grand Finals, their spots in the event will be forfeited to the two individuals they defeated in the Playoffs: Sen and TT1.

While it is unfortunate that this scheduling issue may or may not arise, the NASL wishes all of its league players the best of luck in all their competitive endeavors, and are pleased to announce that either way, there will be a 8 person bracket at the Grand Finals.

Wow, that really sucks. Puzzle was the top seed too, and had a great chance to win the whole thing. I guess that's what you get for beng so good in teamleagues :|

Honestly, this would be horrible of Slayers to prevent him from playing. This is his chance to bank some big money.

Update: All 9 casters revealed:

Well I guess Idra didn't mind the sting of the forfeit penalties, he'll just get it back in casting fees. Good line up though.

It's a shame the only "big" name in the Canadian WCS is Attero. No Huk, TT1, Slush, Kiwikaki, Drewbie, yada yada yada.

Pretty sure those players were all invited, just like how Sheth/IdrA etc were invited for USA WCS, the invite list just hasn't been released yet. A lot of info regarding this event I would say is still missing (prize pool, etc).

Can someone clarify if it's possible that Puzzle and Alicia wont go to NASL as stated on the GSTL thread? And if so, who replaces them? Some NASL admin or something.

Wouldn't be surprised if they threw TT1 back in if Puzzle doesn't show up. I mean he'll be there for WCS anyway... (TT1 was taken out in RO16 by Puzzle)

That's what they're doing, it's in the article.

Yeah well it depends how it works out. HuK vs MC or Hero would still be a close final, and HuK vs Puma is a team kill so anything could happen there... HuK would get stomped by Stephano tho. Ret or Sen might be able to beat Puma, but would lose to Stephano Hero or MC pretty bad.

I fear for our other Canadian Champion TT1 but am rooting for him all the same!

Now that I've looked at this bracket, I've gotta say I 100% believe Canada has a lot more strong players than the US now. Or has it always been like that?

Some very good opening matches to watch.

TTF vs Huk should be interesting, TTF beat Huk in an MLG qualifier.
Ryze vs Ostojiy
TT1 vs jEcho
Mkengyn vs Slush

Both are overshadowed by EU and both scenes don't get as much exposure due to the top swimmers of personality and old-school 2010 players still being relevant.

Hate to see Alicia and Puzzle leave after winning their groups. :\
I hoped that SlayerS would let them go just for this event, even though they're crucial to their roster. I wanted them to make a name for themselves to the international fans. I guess team leagues are more important though, understandable decision.
And I'm glad to see Sen back in the scene, haven't heard about him in a long time. ;o
Mmm, what to watch.

Never count us out man.

We were pretty dominant in BW too.

If I can't get a second ticket, I'll probably just sell my one, so we will just have to wait and see.

Edit: Just got my second ticket. Looks like my buddy and I will be ditching our wives for the weekend and making the trek from Ottawa to TO. Pretty excited!

Well... I mean. The Zerg race number is equal to the combined number of the two other races.

wow, how did these brackets get generated?
We have master level players up against each other to enter the TOP 4 and then we have the top GM players all fighting for one top 4 spot.

I can see the second quarter being obviously the most stacked quarter, but the other three seems pretty close overall ? I mean maybe they aren't the best but they seem okay.

glad they are going. SlayerS will be missing Puzzle, Alicia, Puma and Huk for their GSTL match which sucks, but it would have been worse if Alicia and Puzzle missed out on NASL after they played so well this season

Would have be a travesty if Puzzle and Alicia didn't get their crack at individual success ... they worked really hard for the opportunity. Having another Champion on their roster is better for Slayers in the long run.

I know, I feel bad for them now, 3 members of Slayers-EG at NASL finals. Slayers must be pretty confident in the rest of the team.

its not a mistake. You have to let them go. Puzzle and Alicia stayed up late to play games all season long, cross server and had a great season for NASL. Let them go make some money.

What time does the grand finals start? Schedule says 7:30 but does not state the timezone ( I had assumed it was EST as that is local). But team liquid says it starts 7:30 and states PST. So now I assume that it is 10:30 EST. Seems weird they would post event schedule in non local time and not specify.

Opening ceremony is 10 am est WCS starts first at 11 am est and then Puzzle vs Ret should start at approx 11:45 am est if I'm reading the schedule right

Opening ceremony is 10 am est WCS starts first at 11 am est and then Puzzle vs Ret should start at approx 11:45 am est if I'm reading the schedule right

Doors open at 8 am too for those there live.

8? Damn thats early xD I'm hoping to get there just in time for opening ceremony. Woot 7:30 go bus from Hamilton here I come.... Ugh I hate mornings!

at least you dont have to be on the road by 7 to be there by 8

That's what I thought too because it said that on the ticket but on NASL's website it says:

The venue hall will open at 10am each day to allow attendees a chance to select their favorite seat, whether that is as close to the front as possible or lining the aisles for a chance to high-five or fist bump their favorite pro gamer as players make their red carpet entrances to the main stage.

Or is it the main entrance that opens at 8 and then the actual hall opens at 10?

There might be a few tickets at the venue but only if they have any left. You can buy them online too.

So anyone coming from/going thru Minnesota(ish)? I was watching NASL and for some reason just now realized that the finals are in Toronto (which is about as close as a SC2 event will ever get to me) so I figured I would try my luck and see if anyone on TL was in my area was going.

I don't mind driving a state or two over to meet up with people, but my issue is I'd rather car pool and share gas/hotel if I have the option (not to mention meet new friends that I can nerd out with about SC).

I'm going to check with some people and basically cast as wide a net as I can to see what my options are. So PLZ feel free to PM me so we can talk details (I work days but I will get back to you ASAP)

Congrats. Useless post. You might get a ban for it. Violates Rule #2 (all caps), and #3 (posting for the sake of posting). A little more substance please.

I think the venue is perfect. Close to the airport, easy for all to get to, and it is smack in the middle of the GTA, easily accessible from the golden horseshoe, Peel region, Toronto region etc. Right off the highway, lots of ammenities nearby, food, drink, fuel stations, and lots of parking at the venue. Much better than the downtown Toronto Convention Center: Which you could say is "in the heart of Downtown Toronto, but horribly accessible, horrible parking, not near the airport (limo or taxi needed, or use of Toronto's transit for around an hour to get downtown). The International Center was a much better choice.

I am REALLY eager to attend and watch some good matches, and a good show.

I'm not so sure about the food part. If I recall correctly there's like a Tim Hortons/Wendy's and maybe one other sit down restaurant nearby? I don't know, I just don't recall there being lots of places to eat around there.

Yes, there will be merch available. It's hard to miss when you walk-in the venue!

Was it last year they had more casters than players? And when it was pointed out that there were nearly as many casters as there were actual games in the tournament, some NASL official said that MLG had even more casters. MLG.. which probably has hundreds of games.

I do wish they could have made the main tournament a bigger thing. They run a good tournament, but it just seems to not have enough content for what it could have.

Well, a good thing about having lesser games and knowing your opponent in advance is that you can prepare in advance and therefore it should improve the quality of games. Not like MLG where probably play the same 2-3 builds over and over no matter the player (for most players i guess top koreans/foreigners can adapt a bit more)

still no info on prize money?? Seems weird that all we know is what little was told on LO3.

also it seems really dodgy that prize pool for the Tribes and the WCS are both on the website - yet for the main SC2 event it just says: "compete for glory at the event"

can we please get an official statement of the prize pool and distribution!

NASL has 4 casters. I dont get why you would spent money on even more casters. Give it to the players, or use it to make it a better experience for the live audience/streamviewers. It gives me a bad feeling, to see how NASL sets their priorities. : /

Well, they do have 3 tournaments and 2 languages to cover for the entire weekend. With only 4 casters, they would never get a break for the entirety of the weekend.

It would be nice to have the event listed in the TL calendar.
Or atleast time stamps in the OP.

I only found the schedule link (http://www.nasl.tv/p/S3GF_Schedule) and there is no timezone stated.

the french casters are cool and I doubt they are the "expensive" part, but now think of day9, idra, incontrol and add clutch and soe (hosts). This is were the money will go.

tbh. I am not a fan of multiple stream. Give me one really, really good one and I am happy. If you want to be super mega awesome, add a second (if you can ensure it is still high quality). you cant score with quantity anymore. We can watch uncountable streams of all quality all day everyday and events like NASL, IEM, MLG, Dreamhack, Asus Rog should stand out. Not in numbers of casters and streams, but in quality of production. Imo we should aim to close the gap to TV production standards with every event and in that regard the best I have seen the whole year was the Iron Squid in Paris.

I don't disagree with you zul, but I can still see them justifying more casters for this specific tournament because of the WCS Canada going on at the same time.

This is the first SC2 event hosted within Canada in years, so why not pull out a couple more stops than normal.

Does anyone know how the seating usually works at these events? Do you lose your seat if you get up for food and have to camp out if you want to keep a good seat? If you have a premium pass are you guaranteed to have a seat available in that area?

It was a great event. Couldn't attend, but i did watch the stream, and i think it was overall, a great experience.

Casting was spot on, everything looked nice, i liked the DJ parts (it's a welcome change to the video game music we're used to hear in such events, and gives it a more universal approach: it's not simply about video games anymore, it's about entertainment). The game were great and the downtime between games / series was well managed with interview and various snippets that were always funny and interesting, and short enough not for me to fall asleep (it was in the middle of the night for me, i'm EU).

One downside: The sound production was mediocre at best. It seems the sound dudes had issues with the audience sound / caster sound and switching from one to another.

Thanks for a great event, i'll make sure to watch the next one without a doubt.
