You don't need a post to open your eyes. After I watched several games of competitive BW, even if I was a SC2 player and started with SC2, I already knew something was wrong and irreversible within the game design. Also this video shows it

It's nice and all that you don't like sc2, but it is a really good game, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't. There are people who don't like bw for whatever reason and think it is worse, it's all opinion. It obviously is a good esport if people think it is, people don't lie to themselves on what they enjoy. There are people who enjoy watching and playing sc2, and some only enjoy watching, they obviously enjoy it as why would you force yourself to watch something you don't like or think is mediocre as you seem to think?

I am fine with bw players not liking sc2, I love both but it is super annoying to see you guys just rip on sc2 constantly and then complain when some people go to the bw forum and say something you disagree with when you do the same thing.

What do you think of my challenge? Do you think SC2 would have even a 1/10th the success had it not been a blizzard released sequel to a successful gaming franchise? Do you think the gameplay alone in sc2 could carry it to such heights? If this was StarCommander 2: Next gen Esports RTS, would anyone have cared about it? I don't think so.. and I think anyone being honest with themself would say the same.

I'm a pretty big BW apologist, but I don't think I agree with this. As much as I have grown to dislike what SC2 is, I can't think of a better RTS released in the last 5 years or so. Maybe DoW? I've never played it, but even that is pushing back to 2004. Maybe it wouldn't be as big without SC as it's title, but I think it blows its competition out of the water. Unfortunately, that's not to hard with C&C4 and SupCom2...

Anyways, this line of discussion is probably going to drag the discussion down and away from the actual Update.


Agreed on all fronts. In a previous post above, I acknowledge that sc2 is still the best rts available and one of the best PC games of any genre around. I just don't think it's as good as it should be and I still feel they failed hard at some very basic concepts of what made starcraft great. I'll stop debating my position in this thread and will take it to PMs for anyone still interested.

As a (former silver, currently doing my 5 placement matches) I hate tanks in TvT while playing. I play tankless in all match ups because thats what I enjoy. I find tanks boring to p[lay with That said I don't reallt care if bliz keeps tanks the way they are or makes a way to negate them, just don't ruin pro matches entertainment value. I have great fun playing tankless, I have no real desire to see it change but if they think it will make the games more interesting Im happy for them to try.

The only thing that you can comment with some accuracy is that the they have removed the shredder and the replicator. The other changes is really hard to even grasp as you can't see how they function and even less playing with them. So my thoughts are:

Blizzard release some in-game video so that the community can make informed opinions about the changes.

What i like about hots
1. Battle hellions (Possibility of mech being better vs protoss)
2. Nydus worm diversity
3. Vipers

What i dont like about hots
1. Swarm host = ground version of broodlords (They should keep the 2 distinct in some kind of way)
2. Tempest = broodlord that attacks ground + air?
3. Nexus recall (As if they really need this. Warp ins were more than enough to stop attacks, why must they bring back their entire army? Just to avoid a losing battle? They shouldnt have been in the battle to begin with. I dont like how blizzard is adding things to make protoss more forgiving)

From my understanding, it was both sight and firing range. Optical Flare was just sight I think. If it is what I thought it to be, I don't really see that going into release. It makes any ranged unit that gets hit by it essentially useless, and Protoss needs that range to be able to fight Zerg.

No, it's not Dark Swarm. Dark Swarm makes units under the swarm immune to ranged attacks, but vulnerable to splash damage. Like I said, see Disruption Web.


I don't personally see a huge difference, if say, a Terran player had Dark Swarm or this new spell cast on their bio army, the only difference is that Terran wouldn't be able to fire until within 1 range instead of being completely negated. That's pretty ridiculous when combined with recharging energy from minerals and fungals from Infestors.

I accually get quite furious reading this. How long has the game been out now? 2 years if we count beta. What the hell have they been doing meanwhile? They literally came up with their ideas, made them, showed them to everyone then trashed most of them. Doesn't these guys have a crew that test units?

Their game design leader should be fired. Most of the units already in such a poor state in game design. You know this, I know this. If you don't, look at the voidray. It was suppose to be a ship that charge their weapon over time to get better but it's too hard to balance that so they made it a 2 stage weapon with 3 step animation. Why not rework the entire unit. I could go on a huge rant but choose not too because my arguement is this; They will now make more and new units. Try them, probably release whatever shit they come up with as the singel player is done. And we are then stuck with these units and left with patching over a year, AGAIN to accually make the game viable.

Long ranged aerial siege weapon ... sounds alot like a carrier, why not just fix the fucking carrier.

Zerg changes aren't even worth mentioning...

I really don't see myself buying HOTS, hopefully Blizz will get their shit together for the final expansion. At least I'll have Diablo 3, just hope they don't find a way to fuck that up too

Protoss were struggling VS mutas a while ago. The phoenix change did nothing but somehow nobody makes mutas anymore. Blizz made the tempest to combat the muta problem, but now there is no problem.

Any terran imbalance right now is going to be completely irrelevant with the addition of even one new unit. They are not adding one unit. They are making massive changes to every race.


I think we stopped seeing muta vs protoss because everybody started to make massive amount of roaches and kill protoss at 12min instead. Cut the roach range back to 3 today and tomorrow we see muta again. I like the what they are doing with the tempest.

Carrier are awesome, i LOVE those, but interceptors are very bad, yes the tempest are kinda like the carriers so why not fix the carrier? well everyone would shit a brick if you removed the interceptors from carriers.

I'm liking these notes a lot more more than the Blizzcon preview.

For me, ideally, nothing should be removed from WoL. Like in the passage from Starcraft to SC: Brood War, everything remains and new content is added. This gives more options/strategies to the players and it doesn't break the established metagame.

Edit: With how they are discussing Mass Recall, it doesn't sound like it will be nearly as potent as the mothership version, which might actually make it reasonable. If you can recall a few units that would be fine, a 200/200 army, not so much. For example, make it so you could recall a small cluster of units, say 5 HTs if you are on the losing end of a battle and are retreating. It would allow you to save them rather than do what you currently do, which is try to burn through all their energy before they inevitably die due to their slow speed.

I understand blizzards reasoning with messing around with terran because they are already so versatile. I don't understand the missile thing, it's something that's already in starcraft(hello nukes). Just add an upgrade that costs 200/200, and something expensive like a fusion core for the ability to reduce nuke land time from 20 seconds to like 16 or 17.

Good job removing the horrid protoss units. Tempest I still don't like(it's like a BW BC for crying out loud). The mass recall thing would NEED to be something really punishing like requiring a full energy nexus. Trade a MUCH weaker timing for the ability to retreat safely. For example FFE-> 7gate+2 with blink. All the chronoboost for that timing is already allocated to something. 40 seconds of tech is delayed if you decide you want to have the ability to recall, not to mention the inability to chronoboost gateways.

I like the swarm host, but the nydus worm has me really intrigued. Nice to see that they're thinking of different ways to make the building see more use.

Anti-air spidermine is stupid (terran has turrets, marines, thors, all great as anti-air, except maybe thor). Make it a ground attack and it would be great, and serve the role the shredder did. They really need to give terran more options against late game toss as well. Hopefully they give us some cool mech units to help with that.

Also, the new nexus abilities are.... should I just say silly. The recall ability is SO forgiving for protoss. At least make it a late game only ability that requires 200 energy on the nexus (was 100 last time afaik). Even then I have trouble seeing that make it through beta.

I remember trying it out in that HoTS custom map. Basically if you get two up in a zergs mineral line in their main early on it was game ending. It could of been tweaked a little, but it was probably best to let it go. Seemed like it would be a pain to balance.

The tempest was a powerful splash anti-air capital ship at BlizzCon. With the addition of the range upgrade on phoenix in Wings of Liberty we no longer feel like a splash anti-air weapon is necessary on the protoss, but we would still like to give the protoss some additional firepower in the air. This fucking existed in SC/BW and was called the CARRIER.

But you fucked it up in SC2 and now can't dig out of your own hole.
