The popular casting duo Kevin "RotterdaM" van der Kooi and Ben "MrBitter" Nichol depart from ESL TV. They've been casting for the ESL since IEM Season VI Cologne and were casting ESL tournaments like the IEM and Go4SC2. They also hosted various shows like "The Grass Is Always Greener".
But they won't disappear forever, as the ESL announced that they will work with them at future events (presumably IEM). Additionally the ESL announced that their premier SC2 english spot will be filled soon.
Honestly not that surprising to me. It just makes more sense to hire them (or other casters) for singular envents and not have them on a payroll all the time, since the daily shows they casted didn't have enough viewers to justify the costs (IMO).
They were travelling to a lot of tournaments not connected with ESL so maybe they will become more 'mercenary'(dont know better word) like TotalBiscuit and dApollo.
Sucks, I always enjoyed watching Go4SC2 on sundays and of course the IEM events. Hopefully they'll produce allot of free content with NASL or whatever organisation they are going to work for.
Edit: yeah as for the caster duo discussion I think I would rank them like this
1. Tastosis 2. Bitterdam And then Day9/ X or Apollo/Totalbiscuit or Wolf/Khaldor

more $$$ probably who is Semler?
Semmler was the host at the last winter Assembly in Helsinki, he is part of the 2GD studio with Apollo (and 2GD!) and he mostly casts BLC but knows some starcraft! very nice guy if you ask me!
Bitter is managing the razer house and everyone is a fan of bitterdam (i.e. they are desirable by casting companies). so if bitter is moving to USA, it is likely he is going to cast for an American broad cast, hopefully joined by Rotterdam. If it is nasl, then perhaps we have a big hint as to where the razer house is :O
NASL announcing 3 new casters, these 2 hinted at staying in US for awhile, and mouzKael (guy from ASUS Assembly) is moving country in April. Guess theres the 3 new casters for NASL.
What, I did not see this coming. Wonder where they're off to next, but best of luck to them, I really did enjoy their commentary, hope they land a new job soon.
This is purely speculation, but I think IEM and Bitterdam split because IEM doesn't want to spend substantial sums of money on casters.
Of the major leagues, IEM is one of the more frugal. Paying names to cast is getting more and more expensive. So, my prediction is IEM will pick up less popular casters trying to make a living. Actually, this is exactly what IEM did when they picked up Mr. Bitter.
As for potential names, Apollo, Painuser and HD seem the most likely. As for some long shots, Robin and Axeltoss come to mind.
They said to iNcontrol who hosted the last improvised mini-SotG on stage that they intend to stay in the US for some time. iNcontrol said "Dun dun dun". So I expected them to be doing work in the US regularly for a while now.
First I thought EGMCSL, because Geoff made it sound almost as an *announcement*. Then I thought it's just the Razer Academy (both Bitter and Rotti are in it, by the way, not just Bitter). But now I think since they drop their ESL jobs entirely, they may be getting long term positions in one of the primer NA leagues.

I think this might be a logical move by bitterdam.
I wouldn't be suprised if Moletrap somehow ends up with OGN SC2 casting, hes already doing there LoL. All about building relationships and he's currently doing so.
MrBitter is obviously relocating to california for his training house already, so he's probably got a gig lined up around there. NASL makes sense for the both of them.
Well that sucks, they were the only casters i liked at IEM. Maybe they will try out for GSL casting? Maybe NASL? I honestly think they were good casters. I do hope the pair is not broken up, they had good chemistry. I expect Bitter to do something in the US as far as casting is concerned. Dunno about rottendam.
Probably leaving because of the opportunity to make more cash on weekend events. I don't know the salary at ESL and if they were allowed to cast every single event if they wanted to or if it was something in the contract that didn't allow them too cast something ESL didn't like or events that was in the crossfire with ESL's schedule.

This would be incredible, If NASL really did grab up these two casters I will be so incredibly happy.
I think they were the face and soul of ESL its a big loss for ESL imo,but w/e hope they'll find a new place or will be independent. Best of luck to them!
Hmm. I think Kaeleris + another guy for ESL (mbe Kaele solo for starters) and BitterdaM for NASL (they are already moving to Cali IIRC for the Razer Academy house, so makes sense).
Exciting times my friends! Been a fan of Rotti since his wc3 days (didn't play any buy I watched some of the Rotti ToD duo casts, sick times :D).

Don't be sad.
No matter where we end up, we'll stick together, and we'll continue to promote the EU and German scenes as much as we can.
ESL was very good to us both, and I promise you'll see more of Rotti and me at plenty of their upcoming events.
Keep up the great casting guys :D Besides tastosis the only duo in the buisness with that insane level of chemestry, thanks for all the amazing stories you guys shared at ESL and I really hope we'll get to hear more in the future :D Also pls go to korea, even if it's just for one season, you guys casting code a/gstl would be a dream come true. If it's nasl then I guess I'll have to tune into NASL more :D
I hope they left on terms that are better for them. I love rotterdaM, big fan for many years from war3. I hope they already have a better situation lined up. I'd hate to think they actually lost their jobs and our out of work. ;/
Just hope they keep casting together(and preferably with no one else on a regular basis). They are such a fantastic duo <3
Edit: Never had any doubt that you had other stuff coming up, you'd be way to good for ESL to drop, just glad you are sticking together. Edit#2: Also bitterdam is fighting Tastosis for #1 casting duo. Neither has the knowledge of Artosis, but they are still knowledgeable, are a lot more fun and are more... versatile in their humor.
I can't imagine that ESL would drop them, so there were probably already plans laid out, regardless best of luck, you're a great casting duo and I'd love to see you at more events!
This isn't anything to be sad about. This is probably fine for both Mr. BitterRotterdam and for ESL.tv. This also doesn't mean that they won't be working for them anymore.
They are caster free agents, they don't need to be tied down anyway.
I'll still watch you guys at any events you guys cast.
those silhouettes are so clearly rotterdam mrbitter and orb
edit: left bitter, middle orb, right rotterdam
Orb? Really?
...
orb is a great caster. -.-
Couldn't agree more.
But right now there's also a firestorm aruond him that sponsors just won't touch.
Also, this is not a confirmation.
Who says we're not here to start our own league? Maybe we want to go pro? Hell, LoL seems pretty popular. Maybe we'll just start casting that.
oh shut up you! its already too late, you gave it away! also dont even joke about going to lol man thats not cool ......i just hope there will be a continuation of grass is greener i loved that shit big fan of you guys
Honestly MLG could really use these guys. Two high level, high knowledge casters with appropriate diction, cadence and chemistry. Whatever organization picks them up will be extremely lucky, as they are arguably the #2 casting duo behind Tastosis (And really, only behind because of the korean-league superiority complex we have).
A little off topic, but the people MLG had casting for the most part were awful, sucked at talking/sounded awkward as fuck, and had little game knowledge. I really hope Bitterdam at least sends Sundance their collective resume.
Good luck to Bitter-dam! I hope they can find time for a new season of "The Grass is Always Greener".
That show opened me up to playing other races and I feel i'm a better player now because of the lessons that i learned from picking up those said "other" races.
Yeah, they're probably going to NASL. But I hope that they're going to do GSL instead. I wouldn't be surprised to see OGN hire Tastosis for Proleague. Bitterdam would be a good replacement for GSL Code S.
In terms of casting duos, I'd place it like the following: 1. Tasteless/Artosis 2. Day9/Djwheat 3. MrBitter/Rotterdam 4. Totalbiscuit/Dapollo 5. Painuser/HDStarcraft 6. Other MLG main stage casters (Adebisi, Husky, Rob Simpson, JP) 7. Other IPL casters (Catspajamas, Doa) 8. Other GSL casters (Khaldor, Wolf, Moletrap) 9. Random youtube casters (Basically all of MLG's "community casters", with the exception of Adebisi who's kinda above the rest of the pack) 10. All NASL casters (Gretorp, Orb, other random casters)
Wow, that sucks. I hope they go to NASL to replace Gretorp.
Also interesting to see who ESL will hire now, I unfortunately don't think they will get Apollo as he lives in Sweden and it seems like he'll be doing all the Dreamhack events.
as rottis and demuslims early esl.tv shows are what got me into watching competitive sc2, i've been a huge rotterdam fan since i started following esports and always enjoyed his casts. i'm really looking forward to whatever you two guys are gonna do in the future. if it's gonna be NASL, hell, i guess NASL is gonna become pretty damn awesome. also, i don't think i'll renew my esl.tv premium subscription.

About Day9, I really think he's just too used to solo casting to be 100% comfortable casting with someone else. He totally ignores Wheat most of the time (Wheat doesn't seem to care, which works out well) and makes noises like oooos and aaaahs when his co-caster's talking, totally shitting on w/e they're saying at the time.
I think Wolf with Moletrap/Khaldor is really good. Moletrap is really timid and works well with someone really energetic like Wolf.
Sounds like we have plenty more BitterDam casts coming from somewhere in the future Best of luck to the guys, looking forward to seeing where they pop up next. Game knowledge and humor puts them top3 in my book easily.

That's interesting what you say about solo casting. Personally, I feel the exact same way about all the GSL Code A casters. I think Wolf, Khaldor, and Moletrap are good solo casters in their own right but they've never really paired well with anyone else. Well, Wolf usually does a pretty good job, but both Khaldor and Moletrap do a lot of "blocking action" whenever they're paired with someone else. There was this one time I watched Moletrap solo cast GSL and it was actually much better than whenever he's paired. The same goes for both Gretorp and Orb, which is why I rated them and the rest of NASL so low. I like them both as players and streamers, but they just aren't very good casters imo.
i'd have to imagine they are going to be doing their own casting, or something above esl and it conflicted. no idea what... but can't imagine them just STOPPING casting
Maybe this will mean my favorite assorted casting duo, Bitter[9] will see a little more play. Haven't heard enough Rotterdam to have too informed of an opinion, but I like both casters decently enough and I'm sure we'll still see them at events, hopefully HSC's and some online stuff.

My list looks the same, only I would hae to put MC/MKP at the top!!
My main reason for esl-tv premium (bought the 1 year for 29,99) is gone I was so looking forward to new weekly shows like grass is always greener and more epic storys not even related to sc2, Bitterdam was just so cool to watch.
Will you guys stay in Germany? GL with whatever the plan is!
At least they are leaving together.... Would have broken my heart had they split up
I'll miss them on ESL, I really will. But if they truly might come back to cast IEMs... that would be awesome. I can't really imagine an IEM without Rotti any more.
And whatever they're up to next - I will watch it for sure!

Yeah, that is also assuming OGN even wants foreign casters.
While it's sad they're gonna stop doing ESL casts, I am glad they are moving around and casting for other organizations. They've always been a great duo and work well off each other.
Not to mention the fact that NASL homepage says that they have 3 new casters incoming. I'd be pretty surprised if these two didnt end up there, or at least Mr. Bitter. Now with the Koreans coming back for season 3 I'll def be watching this season!!!

What would they have to cast in the NASL exept the big events?
From twitter: Kevin van der Kooi @RotterdaM08 "I hopped off the plane at LAX with a dream and my cardigan, Welcome to the land of fame, excess, am I gotta fit in? "
Is NASL based in LA / California? That is the last confirmation I need. I wish them good luck, so sad to see them go. So far I never really watched NASL and probably won't watch it in the future, bitterdam casting or not, doesn't really matter to me.

My absolute favorite casting duos:
1. TLO/2GD 2. Rotterdam/Demuslim
Honorable mention, drunken Bling.
those are a lot of weird ways of writing mc + mkp.
I hope that wherever they go, they stay together. They work excepcionally well with each other, they're funny and know each other enough to make jokes about the other on camera (Rotterdam chewed Bitter out the other day for not waiting for him to go to dinner, it was hilarious).
They're a lot like HD and Painuser, they're not that great apart, but together they're excellent.
Makes you wonder what offer they got to leave ESL. It's obvious they did not leave cause of they are bad casters, I would put them second after Artosis and Tasteless.

interesting...I feel the exact opposite.
Same its much easier to listen to rotterdam then it is bitter, its just my opinion though.
That is truly a sad news, I always liked them and their streams on ESL TV. I think they are/were one of the funniest and most entertaining casting duos out there. Let's hope they are going to be casting regularly in the future wherever that may be.

I'd extrapolate that this is accurate. The desired content by the community does seem to be pure gameplay at this point, which I think is completely understandable. However, I do believe that it is worth the investment, and sought by the community to create content like the interview with LookNoHands by Mr. Bitter through ESL TV, if I am correct. It was that very interview that I found out about ESL TV's content, and furthermore learned about LookNoHands, which I really enjoyed! Hopefully more interesting and informative content about aspects of the community will be generated, if not by ESL TV, other video production groups as well.
Sad to see them leave but i'm sure they have other plans already made and this will not be the last time we see them! GL to both Mr. Bitter and Rotterdam in the future!
huh, would like to see them go to NASL... Maybe a 3 way casting thing with Gretorp? would sorta mess with the balance that has been found in 2, especially a duo, but I think it'd be worth trying... I really think that NASL is improving a lot, so if we get to see them there, that'd be nice.
as for their replacement, I really like Kaelaris and would like to see him more, but don't know if he has a regular partner?
anyways good luck to all involved in future endeavors!
I think people are confused. It says that BitterDaM will continue to cast ESL events, but are no longer contracted exclusively to ESL. Before, they had contracts with ESL, now they are going more freelance, with more freedom and choice to pick the events they would like to do (given the events want them). I'm sure as ESL said they will continue to cast all ESL events, but now we can (potentially) look forward to them at other events such as MLG, IPL, NASL, etc. In addition, now they can work on personal/passion projects, such as the Razer Academy.
Damn this is sad news :-( I was looking at my calender and checked if it was 1st of April already, but unfortunately it's not.
I was Platinum Member of Giga 2 and ESL TV Premium subscriber eversince... I won't change that now. HSC + IEM in HD alone justify the price, even if you don't watch any weekly shows.
6 IEM + 2 HSC per year = 8 events for 36€ per year -> 4,5€ for HD per event; which is less than buying the HD pass everytime...
Edit: mouz.kaelaris to ESL TV? Maybe they knew about that before IEM Hanover and that's why they used him there to check the feeback. Seems likely to me....
As long as they still have a good relationship with ESL, as it appears they do due to the fact taht they will be casting future events with them, I am ok wiht this
After reading about you guys leaving ESL, I had my suspicions about this knowing that Rotterdam was in Irvine this past weekend. The timing just made sense.
Just what NASL needs to finally stop being that league that nobody watches. As for ESL, I hope they can find some good replacements. Big shoes to fill.
I'm pretty sure Frodan and the other caster on the secondary stream at MLG made some strategic comments that seemed like even a not very knowledgeable person's response to would be "Well, duuuh!" but they both seemed nice enough, so of course I'd give them a shot, I just don't know that he's someone that would make the cast more interesting. *Fingers crossed* Bitterdam will be interesting to have on NASL, good luck to them.

actually - it is.how long will it take for you to realize that your very own behaviour destroyed your casting "career" ? you will forever be the N****-guy and everytime you may have luck to get to cast a sponsored tournament, many ppl will contact the sponsors again and you will be fired. i'm glad that natural selection even works in the interwebz =P

Orb? Really?

I don't think the drama is THAT bad... :\

You're beating a dead horse and clearly haven't kept up with the situation after orb accepted full responsibility. Regardless, this belongs in a different thread.
On topic, congrats to Bitterdam. I didn't catch much of NASL at all last season, but with the revamped casting, return of Koreans and NASL's continuing improvement of their production, season 3 is shaping up to be really exciting and watchable. I'll certainly be tuning in a lot more this time around

Keep this shit out of unreleated threads, thanks. I have PM'd you with a response to your foaming-in-the-mouth statement, not that such a ridiculous one was worth my time.
If you want to discuss this issue use the many threads already dedicated to it rather than mulling up others...

Your post really reminds me of this: http://www.clipjunkie.com/Southpark-Wheel-of-Fortune-vid889.html I tried to youtube embed but was unable to find any high quality clips. Just give it a rest and move on, there should be some other drama starting up shortly for you to participate in.
If I could choose my dream casting team as a replacement... It would be dApollo, HasuObs and Grubby^^ But well, that might be a bit too much to hope for. And of course it would be sad to see a player end his career to become a caster...
So it'll be mouz.kaelaris + X (he is quite likely I guess, and he did very well at IEM Hanover)
X : maybe Khaldor? - probably not coz of his gsl job maybe dApollo - would be great, but not sure if he would accept the job offer ... ... feel free to add to the list ;-)
I've grown so fond of these guys...very sad announcement to hear But its good to know they'll be casting other events together. They've got chemistry like Tasteless and Artosis do. By far one of the best casting duos there is right now. I wish them all the best! And cant wait to see them casting at NASL later this year. =)

according to ESL TV editor in chief they will cast next seasons IEM Tourstops. It`s still sad for ESL TV to lose the two after making them big and building up the brand "bitterdam".
Sucks b/c with Khaldor in KR and Bitterdam gonig to NASL there's only a few high level casters left in EU.... (and there's only a handful of lower tier casters doing online cups).
So is this a sign that ESL will be focusing less on SC2 in 2012? BitterdaM produced a lot of content for them outside of the IEM events. Given how personality driven some of those shows were, I can't imagine that it would be trivial to bring in two new guys and start producing them again. Most likely the viewer numbers didn't justify their existence (always around 500-2000 whenever I tuned in).
The obvious conclusion is that ESL will put more emphasis on LoL in 2012. I guess the popularity of SC2 has plateaued and ESL will treat the game accordingly.
Bitterdam was probably the most awkward casting team when they first started, both of them kept trying to one-up each other and felt like the other one was trying to make them look like an idiot so they would start arguing, literally in the middle of a game. It sounded similar to something like this:
"Actually I think Terran has the advantage right now." "that's what I meant" "no that's not what you meant, you said something completely different" "you must not have heard me" "my ears work fine"
And it was just awkward. I don't know how they are now, but that's what they were like when I watched them like a year ago.

BitterdaM had the chance to move on to new opportunities/challenges which we don't blame them for, is natural in this business. I can't speak for ESL TV about what they have planned but SC2 is still one our biggest titles for the forseeable future!
Question, more related to the thread than the topic itself:
Is "that was unexpected" or, "how unexpected" some kind of Team Liquid inside joke? No.. I'm being serious. Whenever someone leaves a pro team, or anyone of a noticeable name in the scene makes some kind of change, I see this phrase uttered like the world is gonna end if not mentioned. OF COURSE it's unexpected. Are you facebook buddies with these guys? Do you have late night chats on the phone, whispering little nothings while painting your toe nails with these guys? Why is it so significant to point out how abrupt something is.. tell me, please, because it's starting to irk the fuck outta me.
Awww yeah that is sweet. I can't really read what it stands there though since I get distracted from that picture where it kind of feels like Gretorp "wants" me.

people think it was unexpected because bitterdam were amazing casters and it's hard to imagine that a big league like ESL would let them go like that.

no, it's not an inside joke.
Oh, I'm not speaking solely about this thread. You'll see the phrase mentioned in every single thread of a pro changing teams or a caster doing something like this. Go take a look at similar threads and you'll find it within the first couple posts at least, always the same damn thing. It's the most annoying phenomena I've seen on TL. Considering how often people say it, an inside joke seemed very plausible.
