Not really im saying removing homophobic and racist language would be a big plus to raising esports awareness and acceptance socially, is that a hard point to understand?

This. It is so damned disheartening.

At no point did I mention the use of racial slurs in my post. I'm curious to know, do you support nerd-rage and immature, disrespectful behavior as a norm in the community? it happens in all communities, not just this one. it doesnt matter if i accept it or not, i have to learn to deal with it because at the end of the day its just a computer game. So, no you don't support it, but you don't want anything to change, either? People should just keep being dicks to one another? im neutral to it, i dont are either way because its just a word. if u dont find it acceptable thats fine, but dont burn someone alive for it unless they use the term to a extreme, which orb did not. he used the term in the heat of the moment out of rage and never said it again. I'm not talking about any particular word, I'm talking about behaviors on the whole. I tried to stress that when I said "no mention of racial slurs" as in "this isn't about racial slurs." Orb has a history of being vitriolic, so do IdrA and Destiny. Why they've lasted so long with so many eyes on them is a mystery to me. I'd like a well-behaved community and if the change isn't coming from the bottom up I don't mind it happening top down.
this community will never be well behaved. destiny gets a daily viewership of 3k minimum and it only increases the more offensive he is. i remember he got up to 15k viewers at one point when he brought combatEX and deezer on stream. you can only imagine the ammount of offensive langurage that brought.
recently the most offensive thing he has done this year was with mia rose back in january. upwards of 10k+ viewers all watching him grab mia roses boobs while drunk despite her saying stop numerous times. thats why i find it sad when the community burns someone like just because of ONE word.....

Orb isn't from the South, from as far as I can tell. Nor was he in a Southern surrounding. N-word doesn't 100% mean racism, no doubt. But you did not account for the context. Orb wasn't greeting a friend here. He has trying to insult a person. And he did so by calling the person black. Is it okay to think that being black is bad enough to be ashamed and insulted? Now I am just a simple country boy with no fancy African American History degree. But I know a racist behaviour (not saying orb is 100% KKK type racist) when I see it. I'm Asian. I've been there. the thing is i watch orbs stream regularly since beta, and i know 100% without a shadow of a doubt he is not racist. but ppl, that do not know him, are deeming him as a racist. That's a bold statement, my friend. As far as I'm concerned, we're defined by our actions and behaviour. Orb's behaviour was racist. So people can fairly judge him to be racist. Or do you claim that trying to hurt and insult someone (in retaliation to being cheesed) by calling them black - a nigger - is not racist? How exactly did you ascertain that Orb isn't racist? Did he hug a black person on stream? I watched orbs stream a couple of months ago and he actually called someone a nigger on stream (I haven't watch his stream since, but I am really surprised that nobody complained about his use of racist language earlier, I'm sure you could find a few posts in his stream thread, but overall nobody really cared until a few days ago). At that point it doesn't freaking matter what he claims to be, he regularly uses racist words to insult other people, I couldn't care less if he's actually racist or not, he sure as hell is promoting racism and at the very least accepting it as something "normal".
Better late than never. I'm proud of EG and e-sports community.

Great level headed response to a bunch of drama queens who never accomplished or built anything in their lives.
Yes the racism is bad, but its just the excuse for another witch hunt for some drama.

I find it disturbing that so many people here on TL are actually defending orb ... or not orb (which I could somehow understand at least, you know, hate the sin not the sinner and sometimes you just screw it up badly) but rather the possibility to use racist slurs in publicity without consequences in trying to disguise it as something trivial.
A lot of people make arguments that "noone cared when Destiny or Idra lost it in publicity" ... that's wrong, there has always been an outrage on TL, it was just always besieged by the very same people who now try to downplay this incident as well. You always claim that the people complaining are a "small vocal minority" and continue to rant aggressively about "freedom of speech" and "personal stream, not meant for the public" and that we don't have the right to "judge someone on what he says on his personal stream". I think that as soon as you make the decision to add your stream on Team Liquid you make it public and valid to members of this community to critisize! Don't want it? Don't get yourself listed on TL with your stream. You want the exposure and publicity that comes with beeing listed on TeamLiquid you have to take it all, the good and the bad, no cherry-picking for noone!
The concept of it seems rather simple. If not, feel free to create your own community (especially with those people in mind that did state here that they "truly" are "ashamed" of the "overreaction" over this "trivial" thing (like, really?) that happened and want to quit this community because of it) with your own tournaments and your own clans where only straight, white males do participate with the policy of encouraging sexually and racially demeening language for "entertainment"(!) ... just don't wonder what kind of people will attend such events/community in the end and why you can't find sponsors.
Good luck with that!

That was fucking stupid to be honest.
If orb stops casting I'll honestly be quite pissed. He's one of the few good and genuine casters. Yea, he rages when he plays, but so does a shit ton of people. This is really quite quite sad.
|
*Sigh*. The community is so biased. If other prominent ppl had said the same thing (which they have with zero consequences) there would have been no reaction. I'm not naming names, but there have been a few. This is just one situation where ppl decided to jump on the bandwagon bc they didnt like Orb to begin with. Wow...just wow. - I hope Orb sticks with SC2 as we need more intelligent casters.
|
Wow, I didn't even know what happened until a few minutes ago... I was watching EG master's cup yesterday to watch Socke play and was wondering why Orb wasn't casting but I didn't any of this... So in my mind you guys didn't respond too slowly. I think it's very important to make sure said allegations are true, so well done.
That being said I don't think this is an over-reaction. I think this is exactly how something like that should be handled. Using such words is not acceptable, never, neither in my real life community of friends nor in the community of my favourite game. So I'm glad we're not saying "well, it's not that bad". Yeah it is! And we should make a big deal out of it. If I was the owner of a company I wouldn't want to work with people that insensitive either..
So I don't know what else to say. I 100% agree with the original post. Very well written. Thank you, Mr Garfield!

So your friend would approve if you go to someone who pisses you off and call him "stupid faggot" with the full intension to insult him as hard as you can?
Because if he doesnt, your whole posting is pointless. He did not joke. He actually said he tried to use the biggest insult he could think of. Speaks for itself, does it not?

Dick move from EG for holding double standards. Idra has been BMing and using the words faggots , idiots, joke, fuck for ages how is it fair that what idra gets is only some scoldings while orb get fired straight away for just saying a single word?
|
Excellent decision. Couldn't agree more. At the same time, the leeway, IdrA is given regarding his so-called "personality" is nothing I'm comfortable with. Even so, doesn't make Orb's behaviour right.

You pretty much show how racism works, thank you.

The biggest thing for me here is the Idra/Destiny angle on the controversy. In his twitter response to someone pointing out Idra's wildly homophobic language Alex implies that it's not an issue because it hasn't occurred 'recently.' Unfortunately, by releasing Orb for comments that likely occurred over a year ago, before he was an EG member, EG has established a precedent where making offensive comments at any time in a player's career will lead to their dismissal.
Given the absolute immaturity of the Internet, especially in video game communities, it is often not the safest practice to declare oneself openly gay or even stick up for homosexual individuals, so the fact that there was not the same outrage over destiny and Idra's comments should not be surprising to anyone; even though their language is just as, if not more hurtful.
I can't comment on whether the decision to let Orb go is correct or not, but I can point out the hypocrisy of making this decision in lieu of employing a person who routinely makes/made homophobic remarks.
Then again, I guess this all comes down to the fact that EG sells shirts with Greg's face on them and did not do the same for Orb.

Don't apologize for taking longer than thought to make your decision, you guys did the right thing and made the right moves. If you would have dismissed him off the cuff, you'd be no better than those who contacted your sponsors without knowing all the facts. I respect you and your team for giving Orb the benefit of the doubt before making a very difficult decision.
Thanks for the very well written post. I agree that more people should be harsh against offensive terms and slang like 'gay' or 'faggot' being used as general 'insult's. The starcraft community IS one of maturity, and these actions don't do anything to help us, they only hinder our progression.
Thanks again, this was a pleasure to read.
