Alex is verbose, and you owe it to yourself (and the rest of us) to read the statement in its entirety. Remember, when making comments/claims to provide proper evidence, facts etc. Arguments based on incorrect assumptions, facts and straw men, will be dealt with swiftly. If in doubt, PM a mod or ask IRC. Do NOT spread misinformation, when in doubt, check your sources.

In short, be smart.

A little over dramatized, people get fired every day for less, you don't need to try to justify it. People on both sides don't need to write novels about it, a guy got fired from one gig, big deal, just move on.

Hypocrisy

no its called BUSINESS.. you dont fire your #1 money maker

no it is called hypocrisy if alex comes in and rants about society when he keeps abrasive personalities around who say offensive things all the time. obviously he was simply making a business decision by kicking orb, but he decided to type out this long post about social values. he seems to be full of shit to me, and it's hard to believe people think he's being sincere.

Please, do the same thing Orb did, except go outside and do it at your job, if you have one. And then say your excuse "It's just a word, the whole thing is silly."

Let us know how that works out.
That's not even what I'm getting at. What about Destiny? Total Biscuit? Idra? Those guys have used slurs and they still have a job.

I don't support, or watch any of those guys play/cast. But I'm sure they will be next if they slip. I wasn't that offended to the point where I called sponsors, but I believe Alex made the right choice. Otherwise when will someone finally step in and say enough is enough? It has to start somewhere. I hope the termination of Orb will lead by example, and warn the players/casters mentioned to tread carefully.
Without a paddle up shit creek.

How are the people in this thread comparing Idra's profanity to Orb's? How are the two situations even remotely the same? The word "nigger" is an automatic career-ender for a public figure in almost all situations of use. The word "faggot" is not.

No, this was the SC2 community taking a step towards growing up.

Destiny is the worst possible thing for this community right now. People like him are hurting the growth of SC2 more than we know.

I don't even know what to say to posts like this. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

I appreciate how Alex and EG has handled this professionally, and I agree that Orb has to face some form of consequence over this, but I cannot overlook the fact that a few of EG's own players are guilty of this, like as previously mentioned, Idra's liberal and constant use of the word "f***ot", which is a term associated with homophobia. I know Idra brings the money in and stuff like that, but that is still NOT an excuse to ignore his actions. So I seriously doubt the consistency and the supposed agenda behind this action that EG took. Were it not for the huge storm that members in the community made over this issue, it wouldn't even be that big of an issue, and probably ignored. I feel that EG was pressured to respond to this based on the community reaction. Also, it has something to do with community status: Orb is a caster who has recently been on the rise but not yet considered that much of a "high-level" figure in the community; if people made a fuss over Idra's use of "f***ot", and if people complained to EG and sponsors over it, would EG take action? No, quite simply because his status as a "high-level" community figure would give him a pass, and as previously mentioned, his ability to bring in the dough is too valuable to let go. So it's a simple matter of benefits minus cost. Orb's actions would've cost more than it would've benefited, so he was let go. If Idra did a similar thing, his value would allow the benefits to be still higher than his costs no matter what.

Its just their personality and is who they are.

Really, using racist and homophobic language is just "who they are"? Come on, that's just a very weak response.

It's really really simple, if you are not a racist or a homophobe, don't use racist or homophobic language. If you still choose to do it, not only are you showing your ignorance and lack of empathy for others, but people WILL think that you're a racist or a homophobe. To want to have it both ways is incredibly childish and illogical.

Alex, that was a fantastic post, you and EG have clearly have done the correct and professional thing.

Having said that, -orb- will hopefully put out a statement about all this, and show that he has learned from it. Everyone can make mistakes and get past them.

no its not a massive overaction. EG is a business and good PR is essential. Every other business would have dealt with the situation in the same way.

i doubt idra gives whiny excuses. he admits he is foul mouthed.

And that honesty does make a difference. Idra has freely admitted that some of the things he said are bad and he should not have said them. He has never lied about it or tried to justify what he said.

Why though? Why is there any difference between one slur and another. It's okay as long as the group that it is used against is still actively persecuted? If anything faggot should be less acceptable than nigger.

This is an insightful post.

Do you guys remember the SotG where Destiny and InControl spent 2 hours talking about how the term "nigger" became a generic insult? That was met with some controversy, but the fact is that nigger doesn't mean what it used to. Stop treating it like it does It's what people say when they rage, not when they want to insult a black guy. Same with faggot. Treating orb this way this just reinforces the stigma associated with the words, when it shouldn't even exist anymore.

Orb lied. that should be the reason why you fired him, not because hes been calling people niggers and faggots since the beta. You lost a passionate caster today EG, and while you gained some fans, you lost quite a few as well.

I'm not mad a EG, I understand that they needed to do this from a business standpoint to appease the masses. I find it hard to believe that nobody from EG had ever tuned into one of orbs streams before where he swears, because its rather frequent. Rather, I think that nobody from EG cared.

I'm mad at the starcraft and reddit community. Nobody gives a fuck if orb calls someone a nigger on the stream. If they do, then why does destiny have free reign to do it whenever he wants to? Nobody gives a fuck if orb calls someone a faggot on his stream. If they do, then why does Idra have free reign to do it whenever he wants to? You guys helped ruin someone's life today, I hope you're happy with it.

Words don't just change meanings. The word may have gained a new usage, and therefore perhaps a new meaning, but that doesn't mean it isn't still a very offensive word to a large majority of people.

Until now, being in the public eye you wouldn't need to have consideration of this stuff. Orb has been made an example of. A precedent has been set.

The funny thing about the word "nigger" is that it seems to offend white people more than black people. To all the people in support of Alex's view point (and to Alex himself), what are your opinions on black rappers/comedians/people using the word freely and without consequence?

result of the stupidity of the community. Just jumps to random drama whenever possible
nigger- faggot don't even have remotely the same context they used to have. This was done before he was contracted to EG, and it was done privately in ladder. Do I think it was right? absolutely not, but it is ladder and people rage. I understand, and there is no need to fire a good caster such as orb. And at the same time there are many many double standards everywhere in this community(destiny, idra). As for the response it was just a victim card played by Alex, so he can save his sponsors.

Still can't believe people would actually email sponsors about it.. thats just disgusting. Not many people get the chance to be a part of EG, and even if Orb is a retard at times, he has provided many many good commentaries and that itself deserves sympathy for him to keep his job.

Respect for teamliquid and reddit just so low...
Question.?

Idra calling people "faggots" - ok

Orb calling people "niggers" - not ok

got it, loud and clear.

The real issue here, is that Orb isn't that popular relative to someone like Idra, so when people on reddit cry to sponsors, it's simply just an easy fix to fire him, plain and simple.

Mr. Garfield, please take a moment and step off of your moral high-ground, and realize this point. You made an easy business decision, nothing more. There was no need for some grandiose soap-boxing post about racism and your college background to justify this business decision.

I'm not saying that Orb shouldn't have been fired, he rather should not have been hired in the first place knowing his reputation, but to go on this diatribe about fighting racism and committing to a higher-moral standard is just plain silly.
Do, or do not, there is no try...
