Watched for free all the way until I couldn't in the finals. For what I saw, though.. I would never pay 20 dollars for 3 days of laggy streams.

edit: Not to put blame on MLG or anything, but it could be the internet in my dorm in Korea.

So the only way MLG can think of to get good games is to pay people to go to their tournaments?

It hurts my head to think that nobody could come up with a better way to get good players to want to go to their tournaments.

I'm sure if they didn't fly the players out they still would hvae all wanted to go. But spending a thousand dollars to fly to the US to most likely win nothing isn't really worth it for most people..

Yeah, because if MLG decided to not pay for everybody to go to their tournaments, there would still be no prize pool.

Well.... actually, it IS MLG....

No it's called helping teams not have too pay for flights, which in term means they have more money for other things which helps esports. When the fuck did so many people devolepe such a huge entitlement complex, the fact is somethings you have too pay for and thats how it works...

i take it you never go to the movies then? dont have an expensive phone plan? dont eat out at restaurants? US culture is built around wasting money on luxury items.
I don't purchase refreshments at a movie theatre and my phone plan is much more essential and I use it more and it gives me greater pay back and is at a much better value. Eating out are social events such as dates or with buds, harvesting relationships have much more value than watching a bracket of starcraft stretched out over a weekend. I also don't do the above mentioned very often, on special occasions.

maybe you should watch mlg with a friend then so that you dont think its "irresponsible," because apparently for you its only "irresponsible" if you do it alone.

Did the cookie thing. I only watched the finals anyway. From what I saw, I am very happy I didn't pay 20$ for such poor quality. 1080p lagged unplayably, stream froze, no crowd, weak event. Assembly was infinitely more exciting, I would rather pay for assembly than MLG, but I know assembly won't ask for my money anyway.

The "free hour each day" apparently rolled over so, i tuned in for winners finals and watched up until the first game of the finals on Dual Sight.

I watched only this last day, and on a restream. I'm not spending 20 for 3 days of MLG when I already pay the same for a full season of GSL and watch similar tournaments like Assembly or Dreamhack for free. I would consider a subscription if it included all MLG events, similar to the GSL yearly pass

I have to touch on this as well, the entire thing was pretty boring and poorly produced, besides the big name players I had much more fun watching assembly.

I still don't understand how so many people are having a massive bitch session over $20. Grow the fuck up and get over it...

I paid and watched it even though I missed a large portion due to going to an 18th and missing a lot due to Australian Timezone, I will pay and I will watch again it was a great event and to all those crying about $20 get a fucking life!

Stop being an ignorant asshole and try to understand that some people DO NOT HAVE $20 to throw at every streamed event that comes their way. You will probably laugh this off and find it impossible to believe but there's plenty of people out there in this situation, who were contributing to MLG beforehand through the on-stream advertising.

For the record I didn't watch it at all, and I would have if it were free. I didn't feel the need to try and search for an illegal re-stream and nor did I know that there was a cookie/session work-around (which is shambolic imo).
I just feel like this "sport" (if we're ready to call it that yet) hasn't come far enough to justify $20 PPV events. Sir Scoots said it best on OneMoreGame, everyone is going to implement this business model if they think they can get away with it. That's where a problem will arise, because whilst a decent percentage of people are currently willing to pay $20 for the MLG Arena's, what percentage of those will pay another $20 for IPL, another $20 for Dreamhack, another (x amount) for GSL... and the list goes on.

If the likes of MLG and others are really serious about putting this kind of pricetag on their content, then they need to seriously step up their game. First off, they need to hire some competent developers to create a system that can't be exploited by silly browser tricks. Sir Scoots pointed out the fact that MLG received/are receiving $50m in venture capital... how about spending a tiny fraction of it on competent developers who can build a website that people want to visit, and securing the damn thing while you're at it. I hope they understand that they've already lost customers with that cookie/session browser issue, people who will be pissed off that they paid to try and support a company who cried for help, but couldn't help themselves in the end.

I'm still hearing about stream lag and inconsistency... forget charging $20 for a weekend's worth of content if people can't actually enjoy it. They can't moan about the "technology" either, UFC stream events through Ustream for crying out loud without any problems, you just have to be spending the money in the right areas.

Please listen to your fans.

Didn't watch it. Not gonna pay $20 and not gonna ruin it for those who do want to pay.

Either way, my personal opinion is that this is pretty high up there on the "biggest one-time waste of money" list.

You're a corporate shill, and its you that is killing esports by swallowing an inferior product and paying for it.

If by inferior product you are referring to the tournament that set the bar for production, then yes. Minus a few minor glitches lasting no more than 10 minutes over 80 hours of content, MLG > GSL > DreamHack > IPL > NASL.

The games were fine, the stream was, again, an embarrassment. Doubly so considering this was their first attempt to fully monetize an event.

To restate my position, I watched a restream because of a combination of self-interest (I'm a poor student, with a fixed income and no $ to spare) and because I oppose the agenda of MLG which, just like in every other sport, is to get a chokehold on distribution/licensing to the point where they control the sport entirely. Apart from a select few, players can't even make a reliable professional income, yet our priority is monetizing events so MLG can pay dividends to their investors,,,,

You are beyond ignorant. The stream dropped twice for a total of 5 minutes and each time, there were other ways to view the game. MLG wants to monetize so they can become the first self-sufficient eSports league in the world. Take a hike and don't come back until you have a logic based around facts rather than your oh so noble crusader bullshit.

No you. Any dropping of an expensive paid stream is a problem, twice is awful. This is ignoring the fact that it was unwatchable for most of Europe the whole day. You've obviously bought into the propaganda MLG has seeded around, and you are obviously an extremely gullible person. I understand that you paid and now you have to come here and justify yourself, but having an argument usually helps with that.

Have a great day.

It's kind of funny reading your posts. They're actually so agressive and uninformed that I can't tell if you're a troll or just completely ignorant on what your ranting about.

Would the OP consider adding a second poll regarding BarCrafts?

Poll: I watched MLG Winter Arena...

...at home (work, friend's place etc.) (503)

80%

...at a BarCraft (122)

20%

625 total votes

Your vote: I watched MLG Winter Arena...

I slayed and scalped eSports with my fists by watching the free stream.
The free stream you are referring to was Assembly right?
Judging from the rate that the liquipedia page was updated with results from MLG I guess I would have missed most of the games anyway and I don't feel inclined to pay 20 for 75% VoD-action when the VoD's are free anyway.

I don't have friends who are interested in Starcraft or E-sports. In my opinion and how I value things I think it is an irresponsible price-point. I pay for and watch GSL and I watch alot of other content. The value of the MLG Winter Arena event is not worth it compared to all the other stuff I can watch at a much better value. I don't know why you have to get defensive and start making assumptions about my lifestyle.

Paid $20, watched it, enjoyed it, but next time around will only buy if it's $10 or included in the MLG gold membership.

You do have to pay for some things, but there is a near-infinite amount of free SC2 content available. MLG will never be able to compete with "free". It's like if somebody tried to open a version of Facebook that required you pay a monthly fee.

I don't feel entitled to free Starcraft, but I'm not going to pay so long as it exists unless the step up in quality is exceptional.

I watched most of the event as a freeloader because MLG's pay wall didn't work properly for me (and no I don't use any form of adblock, I get ads on both streams and TL.
