Oh for god sake with this stupid SOPA shit. As a programmer there is nothing more i hate than people who thinks they should get everything for free. Are you honestly belive you has the right to download movies / games / book anything for free? No, i dont agree with SOPA or ACTA or anything like them so far all of them turned out that goverment(big companies) wants to control the inernet and that isn't acceptable, but the retarded piracy shit need to be stopped, i make living out of my job, luckily im not a gaming programmer, thus noone actually stealing my "result", but how in the sane mind can you think you have the right to download it for free?
If you found a way to watch it free, great. If you didn't watched it, great. If you paid for it, even greater. But if you didn't paid for it, watched it for free and then come to this thread with words like "OMG YOU WOULD SUPPORT SOPA ARENT YOU?" should frickin slapped in the face to wake him/her up if not too late.
MLG needs to make profit to maintain the level of show, if you dont agree with it, dont buy it, thats all. You could have watched another tournament that was going on. Free stuff is great, but stealing isn't. Theres a difference between them, and dont think you are a pirate just becouse you found a way to get something for free when it not ment to be.
And just for the record, no i didn't paid for it, nor i watched it. This SOPA shit people throwing around is more disgusting and retarded than the stupid "OMG THIS HURT ESPORTS" line

If you used a workaround to watch this weekend you have straight up stolen from MLG like you steal from anywhere else and that disgusts me. You would vote for SOPA, don't you ? What? How does that have to do what I said? I'm saying there was a product that was set at $20 and people stole it. That doesnt mean I would support SOPA it means I'm against blatant stealing. Stupid argument is stupid. Can't argue with that. I just though SOPA was designed to help fight this kind of copyright stealing. It would be far more effective that a post on a forum. My bad. SOPA wasn't all bad. It however stepped over the bounds on many issues which is why it was so vehemently opposed. Just because people didn't want SOPA doesnt mean they're not against stopping internet piracy.
I prefer the word : none merchant exchanges. Wouldn't piracy imply a copy of some sort. Anyway, the problem for MLG is to have enough subscribtion. If you didn't intend/can pay, I don't see the point of putting the none merchant exchanger (:D) in jail...

Foreign fans spent years and years watching OSL/MSL/Proleague through restreams and other methods of "stealing". Without that happening, TL wouldn't even exist as it is today. It's pretty much a time honored Starcraft tradition at this point.

the poll results are shocking, but you have to remember that the vast majority of people who 'ripped off' MLG were never going to buy a ticket.
the natural thought process is like:
1. i want to watch MLG 2. i don't want to pay / can't afford a ticket 3. is there any way i can watch it for free?
once you've made up your mind on point 2, you're very unlikely to purchase a ticket. whether you can find a way to watch or not.

Guys if you didn't agree with MLG's decision to charge, why steal?
I don't understand...
Well, to the nearly 2k people that didn't pay or watch, you missed a sick tournament.

How exactly does a restream "overload" the entire thing? ObviousIy it doesn't, you don't get the point. The entitled freeloaders who paid and instead went to private restreams for help when it lagged were surely overloading those private restreams, I'd expect.
Hence my trolling.

Didn't pay, watched some of it

As a programmer myself I can only put to your attention the Humble Bundle "sales" that has been done... I live from payment of my software and totally disapprove the whichhunt against online "piracy". Its just false excuse to monitor our activies. People who like my work pay me. No need for montoring, drm of anything of the sort. Those who can't pay and benefit of my software I just say: I'm glad to help. End of story.

The people who does not really get how we exchange information and content in the era to come and call it stealing or piracy have just been seriously conditioned by media and politics.

I watched a restream not because I wouldn't pay the twenty dollars for the whole weekend, but because I wasn't home Friday and Saturday. Why pay $20 when I'm only going to watch the semi-finals and finals? If there was a discount for buying a ticket on Sunday since it was already so late into the tournament, I'd definitely buy it.
|
I payed the $20. For what i was given i wouldn't buy it again. It reminded me of homestory cup but without the sort of fun atmosphere that homestory had. I had lag stutters on the last day but it wasn't something that would make it unwatchable. I was expecting some crazy extra content but I don't really feel I got anything extra that hasn't been done before

I gave it a shot, but honestly, it was the most laggy, choppy, low-quality online product I have ever watched, and never in my life would I pay for anything MLG ever again. There were FPS drops every 60 seconds, choppy sound, video constantly cutting out; I am in the process of writing a letter to try to get my money back, it was truly that bad. I wanted to be optimistic and support them and hope it was worth it, but honestly, the tournament and talent was A level, the casting was B level, and the production/technology/stream was D- or F level. It wasn't unwatchable, but it was treading the line between extremely irritating and just completely intolerable. I'm incredibly disappointed, and I thought 20 dollars was about ten or fifteen dollars over a fair price to begin with. They really blew this; they had a shot to impress and prove that their product is worth an outlandish price to the mass of people who think that twenty dollars is far too much, and those that did give them one chance to prove it and show us why saw the exact opposite; MLG proved that paying for it was a mistake by completely dropping the ball on production and making me, personally, feel like a complete fool for paying actual money to watch something that seemed to be filmed by a handicam held by a teenager and streamed through a clearly subpar connection. Never, ever, ever again. The only way I WOULD pay is if they immediately released the replays EXCLUSIVELY to subscribers or something along those lines.

I honestly loved it and it was worth $20 but I am pretty passionate about this stuff.

You can thank the media campaign "piracy is stealing" we have been subjected to for nearly 10 years now, for that particular idiocy.
Note that stealing has multiple linguistic meanings also, it can mean the legal sense (obviously not the case here, at least i hope it is obvious) but it also has far more lax meanings in common everyday language. If your brother "borrows" your favorite T-shirt before a party many people would say something like: "stop stealing my shirt man" instead of the more correct "stop borrowing ".

I didn't pay because I could only watch the last few games of the whole tournament. I wasn't planning on watching but a friend of mine told me just to go on MLG website and watch it, so I watched the end of it for free
|
I did not watch MLG, nor did I try to watch a restream of it anytime during the weekend. I did see the first game of MKP vs. Losira which worked out well for me since I had leave right after. To be honest, it was enough for me to look at the updates and follow along with them rather than trying to watch the matches myself. It doesn't surprise me that people would restream it, nor do I believe that any point I could bring up would change their mind. I would have to think though that MLG had to have seen that coming and accounted for it with their numbers.
Like Omni said above me, I wish the value of the ticket was depreciated throughout the weekend, I think that would have piqued my interest if I could have watched the finals for like $5 or something and look at the VODs afterwards. Maybe something to consider for future events.
|
I paid the full price for the ticket after long and hard thinking.
After spending 5 hours awake on a lagging stream i now feel ripped off.
Won't pay again until i read several future reports that mlg fixed their stream problems

I watched for free on the normal stream. I honestly thought that Sundance was giving it away free to show how good it was. At one point I couldnt watch anymore and I got the request to pay 20$ dollar on the screen which was near my bed time on sunday. I am pretty much convinced though. Even though the price is still pretty high I will pay for it next time. I hope it wont be 20$.
