Holy shit, that's a big kick in the teeth for MLG.

I guess now it becomes more obvious that usage of TL is a privilege, not a right.

This's cool, I'm guessing it wouldn't cost much for MLG to pay some advertising on TL, so the blame is on them if there's no link at all.

Ha just a coincidence! I wasn't being sarcastic.....but after looking at the situation more fully. I don't agree with not listing the tournament in the "upcoming events" section. It's one thing not to embed the paid stream here (I agree 100% with that), it's another to pretend that it's not happening. TL has been my source for everything Starcraft, especially event information. I know this is just one event, but if TL starts omitting events from the calendar based on whatever reason, it will have lost one of the features that I really like. I'd rather not have to find another site for the calendar function, I love having everything here at TL my one stop SC shop.

And MLG Adams and Sundances declarations that they have already reaches their expectations have a big smell of bullshit. "Let's make it sound successful so people can still come and we don't have to sell our homes"

As mentioned earlier, it is advertisement. He would most likely post something similar no matter how the sales went. Maybe he would use actual numbers if they had actually sold a lot though? Who knows...

Lol @ you stating that as fact as if it's not just your cynical assumption. You really think Sundance would straight up lie on his Twitter? It's usually not a good idea to accuse someone of lying when you don't have a shred of evidence.

You really had to PM me so I wouldn't miss your reply? And an extra little "lol" just for that inflammatory tone, nice.

But sure, since you seem to be in that mood, I can elaborate a bit.
I have very little idea about who Sundance is in person, or the details of how MLG is advertised, but I see no reason for any company to not make a statement that will increase their sales, when there is no chance of their statement being proven false. In this case, we will never know what their projections are, and we do not know how much they have sold up to now. Maybe they will publish number of sold tickets, but I doubt we will ever know their projections. So it is entirely safe to tweet, true or not.
So:
- Will never be proven false.
- Will help sales.
- Will make sponsors happy.
Why not? I mean, I honestly hope that MLG does well, for e-sports in general, and I think twitter is a great place to advertise, so I genuinely hope that he will get more viewers from it. But I think we should be careful in using his tweet as confirmation that sales are actually doing well.

You can compare to how everyone are publishing stream information in ways to make it look like every single person on the globe was watching on triple screens in HD every second of their tournament.

And plase don't PM me any more.

Where in that post did you provide hard evidence rather than assumptions? Your argument: the tweet benefits sundance, therefore it must have been a lie. You might wanna put a little more thought into your posts.

Try to calm down a bit and read what I write instead. Where do I say that this tweet is a lie? quote me!

You're avoiding using the word lie but it's clearly what you're saying. No point in denying it.

owell. as long as they keep to this policy in the future...

This was discussed in the first few pages, go back and read all the hot-bid posts, they are easy to find while scrolling.
As I understood, the AoL was first PPV, and not listed, but then at some point changed to free, at which point it got added to the calender.

i distinctly remember clicking on a link from the sidebar and seeing that it was PPV :p

I thank them for turning their backs on MLG because they refused to pay for advertise. It was double standards from MLG.

They are not turning their backs on anyone, streams with no FTV option don't go on the site calendar unless the advertisement fee is paid, it's that simple.

No.

They have a 1 hour demo you get a day. That's it.

If MLG doesn't want to pay when the premise of the event is PPV only then not only should the streams not be available on TL, but they shouldn't be in the calendar either.

Doesn't mean there cannot be a LR thread and discussion about it.

It's the right thing to do.

Already answered this earlier in the thread, but I'll quote myself instead of just repeating it.

I know that many people are thanking them because they see it as a blow to the PPV model they don't like.

I personally thanked them for taking the time to come up with a policy that directly means it's more likely that as time goes on TL will stay as a great resource site for Starcraft without becoming overburdened with advertisements, especially while not benefitting from them.

It was a well thought out policy which was well communicated to us and thus, thanks were in order.

Strongly disagree with this decision. If TL wants its calendar to be an "information source" to TL users, it makes no sense to not include information about a major SC2 event that's going on. In fact TL is doing its users a disservice by not providing as much notification of the event as possible. The idea that the lack of an embedded free stream means that a calendar link would lack utility for TL users is trivial in my eyes. Simply putting a link to MLG's site would be very simple...it's not direct advertising and again, the purpose of a calendar is to notify people of what events are going on. In fact, before reading this post I naturally assumed that every single SC2 event goes onto TL's calendar.

Also, TL is clearly trying to pander to its users while being diplomatic when it simultaneously says that "we had reservations with a PPV model with no free stream option" and "[t]his doesn't mean we disagree with MLG trying this PPV model out." TL is trying to have its cake and eat it too with that contradiction. TL's admins no doubt took note of the results of their poll on the home page and made this decision accordingly.

When you add a free event to a calendar, you are giving information to your users. If you add a PPV only event to your calendar, you are giving ads to the event.

This is a silly distinction. If MLG Arena is listed in the same manner on the calendar as, say, a Dreamhack event, it's no more an "ad" for the former than it is for the latter. It's "giving information to your users" that the event is going on, as you said. An ad is a banner, a sponsored thread, etc. A listing on a calendar is just information. That's what calendars are for.

I'm so happy to finally see someone else that realizes how bad of a decision TL is making! Props to you for wording it all in such a clear and flawless manner. Too bad there still seems to be a lot of people letting their frustration about the PPV model get in the way of their critical thinking.

Free streams still get revenues through advertisements by the way. So listing them and not a PPV-only event is pretty hypocritical. You think the other tournaments are not trying to make profit as well? this is just silly.

Good move TL!

In my personal opinion the new MLG PPV system is really against the general basic idea of esport, free entertainment for everybody. Even the price for only 3 days is waaay to much and seems very greedy for me. So dont support that system!

We are the Viewers! We have the Power! Dont support MLG PPV! DONT PAY!

MLG is going to take a really big hit... is having 60-70 (probably upwords to 80thousand) viewers with free stream > then ppv only? How can they justify that?

This is going to be the biggest weekend ever, I'm missing it not because of money, but because I think it stands against what eSports should be. I was planning on purchasing this product along with my gold membership, EVEN THOUGH I still feel upset that this doesnt come with MLG gold subscription, but finding out that PPV only, I feel it against my best interest to support the organization anymore... Good games or not.

100% support! It is good to see that TL has this position towards the issue since SOTG and Weeds stream were biased I wasn't expecting that someone from the bigger names would raise any criticism.

AoL started off being on the calendar even when it was PPV. At some point, TL or GSL changed its policy. Regardless of which one happened first, this is TL's policy today as a result of having to deal with that PPV tournament. It doesn't show any preferential treatment.

Thank you TL for not being a pushover to a big tournament.
