It's a tough decision, but I've given it some thought.

I feel that Stephano should have only been penalized with the forfeit of the match as a loss, nothing more.

6 of the invites were from other than the USA, and the remaining 10 were all American.

As such, I would think, as a tournament organiser, that certain timings should be made to allow sufficient time for the tournament to take place, without it getting to late or early in the respective time zones that the invited players are in/from. the tournament body decided to start the tournament at 1PM EST, or 7PM CET, which is a decent time to be playing. However, when the time creeps over 7 hours later to 8:30PM EST or 2:30AM CET, it gets a bit nuts. For comparison, the sole Korean player started the tournament at 3AM KST and the tournament finished at 10:30AM or later.

So, given that the organisation spent months getting the prize pool together, I'd think they'd have thought out a bit more about the timing of the matches a bit more.

That said, Stephano did know what the timing of the tournament start and likely finish would be. I don't know if a 16 man tournament should take less than 8 hours to complete, but Stephano should have rested appropriately for it.

As such, I do think that Stephano deserved a punishment of sorts, but at no fault of his own the tournament was scheduled poorly, and deserved no more punishment. Considering the prize money for 4th, they might have well just DQ'd him entirely, its that meager. Stephano was ready to take the loss in money from a potential better finish, in his own action of a forfeit. No further penalisation was necessary, nor do I think one warranted.

So:

Lesson to Stephano, sleep appropriately, else you could have made more/place better.

Lesson to organiser - schedule better. 3AM to be playing competitively? What did you think?

Win. That's all that matters. Win. Nobody likes to lose.

The tournament on this particular time was just the 1/2s and final. CatZ vs Kas, Stephano vs Illusion, and after that CatZ vs Illusion and Kas vs Stephano.

No Ro16, just these games.

You think that forfeiting in the finals is "respect?" Imagine his team wanting him to play. And you think it's respect not to play and just lose to get the second place? I just don't get why you think its a good choice by stephano... It's just beyond my mind... Well i can understand that people gets tired but just play it out and lose like a man instead. That's just my opinion.

I think tournaments or leagues will have a second thought inviting stephano. Because no one will ever know if hes going to do this again. Just imagine everyone of his fans staying up late just to watch his games? And he just leaves?

Even if he doesn't care or whatever.. Hes a part of this community no matter what. I don't dislike or hate Stephano. I think hes a very good player. But i think it was a really bad decision by him.

HuH? You have to be trolling us right? Getting to the finals in a tournament and then simply telling them you don't feel like playing because you're sleepy is almost completely unheard of and extremely unsportsmanlike. There are so many people involved that are most likely not getting paid a dime yet contributing tons of their free time just to give pleasure and increase the popularity of SC2. When have we ever heard of someone doing this in the past? Now all these organizers and fans will have to wait until the next day or whenever Stephano feels like playing? Good luck. Out of the thousands and thousands of professional SC2 games played, can you even think of one or 2 times this has happened? I sure can't. So just imagine if every time or even a small percentage of the times players are tired in the future if they're are just like "Hey, I'm tired, lets continue the tournament in 2 days after I catch up on my sleep." Talk about self centered. And this coming after Stephano created that huge uproar leaving Millenium and then going back breaking all contracts. This is a negative and unfortunate path he has chosen that makes SC2 as an e-sport suffer over time, not just him.

Anyway, my conclusion is firstly you are just clearly trolling us and secondly I'm hoping some of these other tournaments realize how unreliable and selfish Stephano is and choose not to invite him in the future.

Derp.

it's not like Stephano is coming back saying THIS IS UNFAIR HOW COULD YOU PUT ME IN 4th PLACE.

he made a decision, got punished for it, and dealt with it, and now it's over.

You might want to re-read my post next time before you take it as an opportunity to launch yourself onto your soapbox.

There is only one way to read what you said. What exactly do you think is wrong about what he did? Is it the part where he made a mistake (played until he was too tired, overextended himself mentally/psychologically) and was fine dealing with the consequences? He doesn't have to like the situation to be an adult about it. Because that's the most you can and will ever be able to ask from a professional player/athlete. You are acting like he has come back and complained about what happened. He hasn't. In the adult world, if there is a punishment for doing something and you do it anyway, you don't get extra punishment or legal chastisement for doing it on top of the original punishment. You get punished. If you accept the punishment, it happens and it goes on your record and you MOVE ON.

Nothing that's happened in this situation is worth any of that.

I certainly don't know where your soapbox comment came from, but it's the type of cliche e-fighting response that you were trying to sound like you didn't want to be part of. I posted a few short lines. That was hardly a soapbox. And if someone typing 4 lines is considered a soapbox to you, maybe you should readjust your definition of a soapbox.
If you're mad that someone else is brazenly trumpeting their beliefs with ignorance, perhaps you should be mad that you are doing it too.

Thanks for the clarification!

In that case, there is absolutely NO reason for an organiser to hold these matches so damn late in the day, even more so when the favorites to win are non-americans, which is confirmed by the 3 non-americans in the top 4.

My previous post stands and is even more reinforced.

You do realize that this was a barcraft event, right? You know what barcraft is and means, do you?

Edit: not to forget that the tournament started even later than scheduled, because stephano asked for a break (about an hour). You can twitch it like you want, its absolutely (dont take it personally) retarded to blame a us barcraft-event for not "obeying" european time. Especially if you know what tournament you signed on, its not like stephanos manager did sign him up without him noticing. He knew, it was a barcraft-event, he knew when the finals were scheduled, he knew that it was a US tourney - and YET he did accept the invite.

And after ALL that, its the organizers fault? Are people really that stupid - just asking?

Stunts like this give people who follow e-sports something to talk about. In all "arenas" there are polarizing figures who create the hype and intrigue which humans lust for in all realms of entertainment, "drama."

That being said, I'm firmly in camp "Stephano is a pompous ass; who should understand that he is allowed to profit from his play at the pleasure of the people." Acts such as this one stink of a child who is too immature to understand the import of his actions. Nor, clearly, does he know how to help e-sports grow and develop.

Stephano will fade, or he will develop. We'll all be watching to see which path he chooses <-- = *facepalm* ...sigh...

No, barcraft means its quite possible that you have to play in the middle if the night with 9 hours difference. If you dont consider that and sign in nevertheless, its not the tourneys fault. Stephano could have easily declined, could he not? Yet HE went to the OnOG-Staff and said "ill participate".

So either you lost a bit of reality while trying to be a good fan, or, well.. Nah, thats pretty much it. And sugarcoated as well.

I think Stephano made the right decision here.

He cut himself out of a few hundred dollars, but in exchange he chose not to intentionally play badly for little money and no personal gain to his health or skill. I think he definitely chose the better option, because playing badly and having no investment in the game does not make for a good series.

I think that the people saying Stephano should have been aware of potential schedule conflicts are right, but nobody is perfect. Stephano was find $600 for his mistake, I think that's completely fair. No BM, no unprofessional behavior. He could've chosen to plan his schedule a little bit better, but he obviously did not expect it to drag on as late as it did. C'est la vie, nobody is perfect or has clairvoyance.
After all this time, I still haven't figured out the correlation between sexual orientation and beating an unprepared opponent. Are homosexuals the next koreans? Many players seem to think it's an unfair advantage. - pandaburn

Except every point being argued now has already been re-argued 10x over. Just stop people, honestly. Stephano doesn't even care anymore, nor does ONOG, so neither should you guys.
