I'm very serious, people stayed up for 5 days playing games before. It gets on the news often for mmos.

Yes I know that. Are you saying that Stephano was awake for many days>

I'm saying that if Stephano says he is tired, give him the benefit of the doubt and don't let him play. Let him postpone his match till he is capable of playing.

ummmm, no. thats not how tournaments work. you play when it is scheduled, not when you feel like it.

sorry GSL, our team is tired, can we play our final GSTL match next week? fuck no.

That's not in the GTSL rules... It just says they lose and get 2nd place... They don't have to play...

your logic is all over the place. rick perry and now this

I think as a prominent figure in the SC2 scene Stephano should have handled the situation more professionally. The news comes as a significant blow to the organizers of this event as well as the fans who were keen on seeing Stephano play. As a star player, Stephano must be aware that the actions he makes will be looked at in detail by the community. Similarly to athletes e-sports players should think before they act unless they are able to handle the backlash that will occur. In my opinion it doesn't matter what the prize pool of the tournament is, players should act in a manner that will help make the sport grow and evolve.

Stephano is the very definition of unprofessional in Esports. He lied to his team and to Col to get a raise from both teams. He isn't investing in Starcraft, instead he is going to quit playing this year to go back to school. He forfeits a finals despite the organizers hard work of putting the event together. Tell me now, is there anyone on the scene that is less professional than this?

It's would have been more unprofessional to lose the match and die of exhaustion at his keyboard. Is that what you want? Or would you rather him not play in one of his tournaments? Or would you rather him try in both tournaments to get as high as you can!!! Last option please!

People are now suggesting that stephano was on the brink of dying from exhaustion from playing starcraft past his bedtime.

rofl

How long do you think the human body can sustain itself without sleep? I'll tell you if you're right.

For longer than 24 hours. Which is much more than stephano would have been awake for assuming he had woken up at a reasonable time. And if he woke up at 1 in the morning the day before two tournaments that would likely go well into the night, it's his fault.

Am I right?

Yea you're right. But he death the likelihood of death increases as a function of sleep deprivation. So he still could have died or passed out.

Stop embarrassing yourself. Do you really think Stephano would have died if he didn't forfeit?

How much do you practice? How much does he practice? I really think that he could've. Some people take gaming to the extreme. Not embarassing anyone.

Stephano does not practice that much. It was a long day for him, but I am pretty sure he was not at risk of dying. Try a different argument please.

How about the argument of falling asleep or collapsing at the keyboard?

Very unlikely. His play would have been sub-optimal, but given that SC2 is still a pretty intense game, it is hard for him to fall asleep from exhaustion. His games with Illusion did not suggest anything wrong with his play (overall play was pretty good, what we would expect from him).

Man this really sucks, it seems to me that more and more players are forfeiting matches...
No matter in which business area you work there's something called professionalism and respect. I feel like a true professional or pro will put up to anything in order to their ''job''. This kind of attitude is hindering not only the teams that unprofessional players belong to, but also esports in general.
The biggest upsetting fact to me is that Stephano had the chance to delay his match so he could play the finals and after all the effort made by ONOG he just quitted...

(sorry for the bad english..)

"Hey Mrs. Wablestein, I'm feeling pretty tired, can you postpone my exams, even though I knew they were going to be today and stayed up late anyways?"

"No"

That's how this stuff works. You don't get to have exceptions for yourself when you knew what was going to happen

Analogy circle, here we go.

It'd be more like,

Stephano student: Hey, I finished my exam as much as I could but I got tired/worn out so I turned it in early. Will you accept it?

Professor: Okay, but you won't be getting anything for something that isn't filled out.

Stephano student: Ok, that's what I was expecting.

I was making a general relation, but yes that is the jist of it.
Why people are still arguing about it when Stephano is fine with it is beyond me.

I'm arguing with people who are on his ass and trying to say he had no right to forfeit and that he should have played it out even though he felt he was unfit to the point where he gave up a chance at 1500 dollars.

It's just disrespectful to the people setting up the tournament, not only because of the time and effort put in by them, but because they're relying on the ad income from the finals.

On a more serious note, I didn't watch anything of the tournament but I think the organizers and Stephano himself handled it well. From what I heard there was a lot of unnecessary waiting time beforehand (caused by Stephano), stuff like that should be fixed and handled more harshly for the next time imo (with a proper rule set and guidelines, if someone is unexcused 15-20 minutes late for a match its auto forfeit or something like that). But if a player wants to forfeit he should be able to do so in an online tournament (with all the consequences from his fans and his team because of his lack of professionality), if he doesn't want to play the finals it is the best for everyone if someone else gets the spot, so it is kind of reasonable to rank him down to 4th place and there is no clear loser in the scenario that happened. He couldn't complain if he got disqualified though, so he can thank the responsible persons for his 4th rank.

This. The thread should just be closed and this stickied to the OP

Kind of unprofessional, the way Stephano handled this. There are a lot more people involved in making a tournament happen than the players, and it is unrealistic for a player to expect the tournament organizers to work around his/her schedule. However, I think everyone would have been a lot more pissed if he had worker rushed 3 games in a row instead. So I guess it wasn't the worst way he could have handled it either (not to hate on Naniwa or anything, that was a completely different situation).

Still, if you book yourself for two tournaments in one day, you'd better be prepared to play both tournaments all the way to the finals. Kas also played in both the SCAN Inv and ONOG tournaments that day and, assuming he was playing from his home in Ukraine, it would have been even later for him than for Stephano in France. But Kas manned up and played anyway. Stop being a diva Stephano, you don't want to be known as the Kanye West of esports.

Isn't it like totally common for progamers to forfeit online tournament stuff? All this uproar is totally unnecessary. It's a risk a tournament organizer has to calculate.

Waiting for another thread regarding Tyler to show up any second now, TeamLiquid Esports.

I am not sure whether people are actually serious about this, do you really think that there should be a thread every time someone forfeits in a tournament? Do you truly think that "Tyler forfeits round 1 of tournament" is worth a thread by itself? It is not a notable news worthy event. The situation with Stephano in the finals of a major invitational (3k prize pool) is something that never happened before, and about a player who is one of the best (if not the best) non-Koreans.

Think about what would happen in either scenario:

1. We make a thread just about Tyler forfeiting
People complain because it clearly isn't news worthy. Tyler dropping out in the first round doesn't really affect the tournament. Tyler isn't winning championships and didn't forfeit in the finals. People will say its just TL "hyping another one of their players who doesn't get results" etc.

2. We don't make a thread about Tyler forfeiting
People react like they are in this thread

Tyler forfeiting doesn't fit in this thread, and isn't even close to the level of notability / newsworthiness that this situation with Stephano is. It seems a bit unfair and far too easy to just point and yell bias all the time. I still don't understand whether people actually believe there should be a thread about Tyler's forfeit or whether they just like finding things to complain about.

If it was any other player forfeiting (not Tyler) in the first round, we still wouldn't make a thread about it.

On January 31 2012 06:45 Hot_Bid wrote:
I don't understand how people can say its hypocrisy that there is no thread about Tyler when if it was anyone else who forfeits first round (literally anyone, doesn't have to be Liquid) we wouldn't make a thread about it.

To summarize:
1. Anyone forfeiting first round, no thread, not newsworthy
2. One of the best foreigners forfeiting invitational right before finals, yes thread

#1 doesn't matter if it's Liquid, there wouldn't be a thread about Destiny or Flo or Incontrol or anyone else forfeiting first round, this should be obvious to anyone. There is no special treatment for Tyler.

While I understand ONOGs position of wanting to clarify the situation with Stephano especially after such a lengthy delay in there schedule. I just find it completely odd that nobody wants to mention the other withdrawal from the tournament. That being Liquid Tyler. While I would like to think that Tyler understands being a professional more than most in this industry and his career. I find it rather amusing that your so quick to stick up for him, post multiple times, then offer no reason to the community. The same community that he asks to support him, his site, his team, makes $$ off of through advertising and streaming.

Liquid has always been cleaner than the rest. They were always the guys that people gravitated towards because they did it better than the other guys, even when they weren't performing, and they always had fun. What does leaving in the 1st round have to do with being a professional. The bottom line is it isn't professional. Not offering an explanation to your supporters isn't either.

Does Tyler owe anyone an explanation? No, he doesn't. He doesn't have to do a damn thing. Your posts defending him and saying nothing when 70% of his supporters simply want to know "why?". These are the supporters paying his bills, his teams bills, and making this site one of the best on the internet.

Its just an opinion. It's not the most news worthy event but people would like to know. If people want to know then guess what...Thats NEWS!!!!!!!! OMG LIQUID TYLER IS NEWS ON TEAMLIQUID.NET.

So was he lying? That sounds the case. If it were, then yes, I'd accept that he should have played the match through.

Are you serious... Try staying up for 24 hours once playing video games. I promise you won't die

It's fine if logic goes on tangents, it's like a sub-proof. They eventually point to the say conclusion.

I don't even...

Am I being trolled? Or is this guy really THIS sad?

If it wasn't an invitational tournament than this wouldn't be news at all. But you don't get invited to a tournament and then refuse to play, after the tournament delays the match at your request once already.
There is no such thing as perfection, only improvement.

may i suggest you take a breather, think about what you write before you write it and then everyone can have an actual, logical conversation.

actually he sounds like he had an unintended scheduling conflict...

Unintended scheduling conflict? SCAN and ONOG tournaments were both announced ahead of time and he was fully aware of the fact that they were going to take place. He's an adult; he should have the common sense to check his schedule prior to registering for official events.
