Even though pro-gamers are generally viewed more positively in terms of their appearance in Korea compared to the west, not all of the Korean pro-gamers are considered to have celebrity good looks, with the exception of Bisu I can't think of anyone who could immediately be put into that category. But I think pro-gamers from anywhere today are quite well groomed, the western impression of obese unhygienic pro-gamer is in the past. I don't think anyone who knows a thing about professional gaming would have that impression.

hmm, boxer used to have celebrity looks before, now he's a bit older of course

as for above average...maybe jaedong, hoejja, modesty off the top of my head. i'm sure there's more. this being based on my completely heterosexual east asian guy viewpoint.

let's just say i see a lot of asians every day.

Korean concept of a 'pro gamer':

I believe the pro scene of broodwar has been popularised due to reinvented image of a hardcore gamer, this is largely responsible due to Kespa's regulations of keeping the pros in a exercise regime to keep the players active and healthy looking and encourages them to behave and look a certain way. This caused female fans to become more accepting to esports, after all 50% of the population are girls

The western idea of hardcore gamers being unnatractive and unhealthy is true for the most part! Likely the reason why there are so few female fans in the foreigner scene compared to the asian scene.

The question is, should there be a concious effort to improve the appearance of western pro gamers? let's talk.

That's the western concept of a GAMER not a PRO GAMER. Fail harder.

The last thing any sports or about anything ever needs are these painfully overdone photoshoots of mainly (koeran) boys acting all tough.....

And the OP is wrong anyway. Most foreigner pro gamers seem to look decent?

Yeah, this is a really ridiculous generalization. I've been to LAN events and met plenty of pro gamers in person, and they're just normal people, not unwashed basement dwellers. As for mostly being overweight, that's just silly. Certainly the proportion is no worse than the general population of people who earn their livings sitting in front of computers. Thinking through the American progamers that immediately come to mind, I'd say they're on average in better shape than a random sampling of 20-something American office workers.

First things first Western esports IS NOT A SYNONYM OF SC2. I know I know, 95% of ppl on this forum think so, but anyway.

I think pro gamers in the west look relatively healthy and ok. There are some overweight ppl but there are overweight ppl in any random group of people.

People need to stop jerking off to Korean gamers like they are some kind of gods, and just train harder.

And why is that everyone thinks StarCraft is HUGE IN KOREA. It's not that huge.

In terms of looks? Go to any engineering college in the USA, and you'll see tons of guys who resemble him strongly. He quite literally looks like just another white nerd studying Mech-E or something. >_>

As a Mech-E major, most people I know don't actually look nerdy at all.

A guy can play great, win championships and everything else, but if when he shows his face on screen, if he hasn't been taking care of himself (I'm not talking about whether he's appealing or not, but his hygiene here) it's going to turn off people. Well, girls mainly. I can see how guys wouldn't really care. Anyone, appealing or not to begin with, that works out or takes care of themselves is going to be seen in a better light than someone who stays up 22hrs out of 24 and only showers once a week.

tldr; I agree with a better image for pro gamers, and I don't think white-ra looks funny ;o! But he has gotten a pot belly (._.) someone take that man to the gym! He could be so sexy <.< such a waste!

unattractive males that are unattractive due to their own choice, I.E. not taking care of their hygeine, hair, facial hair, or having absolutely no sense of style makes me NOT want to watch them, or root for them in tournaments regardless of playstyle or skill. I'm a straight male at that, so I could only imagine what a turn-off it would be for a straight girl or gay man to see a sloppy person in eSports, and formulate thier opinion of it as a whole off of them. A single negative image can outweigh multiple positive images.

It's unfortunate but it's true; appearance matters.

Being fat is not unnatural, there can certainly be advantages (physically) to it. Just because someone isn't overweight doesn't mean they aren't unhealthy as shit.

Also I don't get how someone would not root for a player based on their facial hair or "lack of style." If that is you proof that apparence matters, then we have different definitions of what "matters."

Then they aren't really "fat", they're just "big". Fat, in today's language, implies a degree of overweightness that is unhealthy and/or not attractive.
