We are Happy to present you the First AOL of 2012! The AOL is an online tournament with a line-up of Star players Which will be commentated in English and broadcasted Live via GOMTV.net. This time we'll find the ReaL inheritor of the Kong-line!
Tournament period : January 2nd, 2012 - January 5th, 2012 (KST) Time : 18:10 ~ (KST)
Anyone else thinks this is the most hilarious thing GomTV has done?
I hope finals will be DRG and MKP, with MKP losing xD
Most interesting thing about the tournament is map pool IMO.
- GSL Dual Sight - GSL Antiga Shipyard - GSL Bel`Shir Beach - Daybreak - ESV Cloud Kingdom - Metropolis (not Metalopolis, it's a new map by LSPrime, you can find on Team Crux's website) - Entombed Valley
Could have some indication of the new maps for the next GSL. Cloud Kingdom to GSL would be a welcomed addition.
Crossfire is finally removed from the map pool and Blizzard's new map Entombed Valley as well as ESV's map Cloud Kingdom are added to the map pool so it actually looks quite good right now.
Can't really say i'm looking forward to see Hopetorture, Inca or TOP playing but there will be a good finals for sure. But an Arena of Legends without MVP, Nestea, MC and MMA just doesn't feel right.
Sweet. The real news for me, however, is that Cloud Kingdom is in the map pool :D. So glad that map has reached the gsl, now if it can just reach the ladder. Metropolis looks downright sexy as well. Not too stoked about Entombed Valley though

Where did you get the idea? If you're talking bout who posted the article, other staff like Sam and Snowbird have been doing it for ages. Almost the entire year now.
They probably meant to put it so that players that had a 2nd but not a 1st got in.
Fun fact: Up until the finals where MMA beat MVP, you had never had a guy get both 1st and 2nd in a GSL (if a previous winner got to finals, he won. If a previous 2nd got to finals, he got 2nd).
On December 27 2011 20:01 Lorch wrote: Hahahahahahaha omg this is so funny, Marineking should take 2nd as he truly is the real inheritor of the Kong-line, the 2nd amongst the 2nds.
There would beonly one problem with MarineKong. He will play this tournament from europe so he might have some lags (or get into HSC mood and get drunk)

The games aren't played live, they're cast of replays. He probably plays his matches before going to HSC.
On December 27 2011 20:39 Odal wrote: Why is Entombed Valley part of the map pool? It is seriously one of the worst maps ever made. Should cut Antiga out too.
The GSL Antiga isn't that bad, forced cross-spawns and removed gold. Entombed Valley seems a bit of an odd choice tho.
"King of Kong" good name for english lol. Is the Korean name the same? Cus obviously king of kong = king kong, aka giant gorilla lol...
RAINBOW FIGHTING (i'm wondering what he feels having been invited to this lol, he probably won't stand a chance though)
Edit:
HOLY FUCK
DOES ANYONE REALIZE the importance of this? They are trying out 2 new maps in this. This AoL (and other special tournaments, but for now, we have at least 1 tournament that will serve this role!) can serve as that kind of competitive tournament with good/top players where they can try out new maps without too many negative consequences :D

I'm curious, did you even know they were adding your map to the pool or did you just find out? I assume they don't have to contact you in any way as long as the map is published to the KR server and anyone is free to use any map in any tournament, so is this news to you as well?

Kong means second place basically, so this is a tournament with only second-place players in SC2

they are all players that lost in gsl finals, and haven't won any gsl final
Also if it does turn out to be DRG and MKP are the strongest in this tourny, I hope they will face each other in the finals. Facing earlier would be disappointing xD
Edit: OOPS didn't see Leenock in there. He is definitely the best in there xD

The players in this are players who have lost in GSL finals.
Nice that GOM uses Cloud Kingdom and that new Metropolis map for this! >)
Hm I guess it's only the major events (GSL) so no AoL for ganzi and yellow hasn't placed 2nd in a sc2 tourny.
I just noticed another thing. Group players get 200,000 won, which is 170 (or 200 to be simple) dollars. 2nd place gets 220,000 won, wtf lol? First place gets 2,220,000 won.
So much emphasis on first place.
Oh wait I just noticed. 2 = 2nd place. LOL
Also why is there entombed valley? Is it for lulz, testing, or because they think it's better than Arid Plateau? A combination perhaps?

Wasn't that cloud map the one that won the TL contest? I find it rather surprising yet amazing that they choose to use that for an "official" tournament.

Yes but why the word kong?
Sorry I'm not an expert at the subject, but it has to do with that Kong Dance video that is linked in the OP.
I think it goes something like this.
There's this song where there's this "kong dance", and YellOw was seen doing it once. So people started calling him a kong, and "kong line" started being used for other players who got only second place(s), and I think that refers to the dance too? (dancers lining up).

Well Cloud Kingdom has been in the map pool for the ESV weeklies for a while, so Koreans have already been exposed to it anyway, meaning they are actually probably going to be quite comfortable with it (since someone on their team will have already played on it most likely). GOM and ESV have also already co-operated through the Code A spot awarded to the winner of the ESV monthly final a couple of months ago, so it's not a massive surprise that the winner of the TL map contest, which has already been used in Korea, and is made by some people who have contact with GOM has made it into a (smaller) competition. It is nice to see though.

Kong is a nickname of yellow, it's bean in korean i think (given to him because of his short stature). So when he did the dance, they called it kong dance

Ah, thanks xD. Was/is he really that short? Seems like he should have stopped growing at that time. When I see him in pictures and videos he seems average for a male o.o
I hope for TOP vs MKP finals with MKP loosing ! Muahahaha :D Not that I'm a big TOP fan or that I don't like MKP, I would just find it extra hillarious :D
I really hope Cloud Kingdom will shine in this tournament and deliver some awesome matches, so we can see it in the GSL Map Pool and from there on it will spread into every tourney like Dual Sight and Daybreak.
The winner of the tournament will be MKP of course, because he is the King of all Kongs. Simple.

but there is one more thing about being a true kong.
A true kong will always win a special event

Exactly so everyone has to win this tournament.

there can only be one true kong.

Maybe they want to see if Cloud Kingdom, Metropolis and Entombed Valley are better than the other shitty maps in the map pool they want to remove. Daybreak is just there so that some of the matches are epic not matter what
Rly happy that Cloud Kingdom is used, huge step forward for the foreigner mapmaking community and for map pool diversity as a whole!!(!!!!) As for the players: Gonna be a lot of fun!
GSL no longer have any 4 player mirror-symmetrical maps in their pool except for Shakuras, which they surprisingly brought back in the Blizzard Cup. Shakuras is a much better and more nostalgic map (home to some of the greatest games - from Kyrix-Foxer to Leenock-Clide to MMA-DRG). Metropolis really is in so many ways an inferior map.
So... since this is a special event and a tournament to discover the true Kong, MKP will make the finals and constantly set off the in-game stalemate detector (it's not like he hasn't gotten close to that before). Eventually GOM will just stop the match and give both players 1.5-th place.
This is gonna be a great and entertaining tournament. Good work GOM, you have almost redeemed yourself from all the mess surrounding the Naniwa incident.

Dual Sight, Antiga Shipyard and Bel'shir Beach are all extremely tired maps IMO, Pretty disappointed GOM is still using them :|
Was Calm Before The Storm imbalanced or something?
I'm happy and a bit relieved that GOMTV will have a bit more than just the decreased regular GSL's for 2012. Thanks GOMTV; you're my favorite SC2 viewing by far. Happy New Year to all!
Gom special tournaments always have a different map pool from regular seasons, this is just them trying out new maps they think might work, this isn't even close to being an indication for next years map pool.

Wrong... they have almost always been 95% similar. The only thing different is AoL's typically start midway through a season. This is the first time it's starting prior to the season.
AoL2 map pool: Antiga Shipyard • Bel'Shir Beach • Calm Before the Storm • Crossfire SE • Daybreak • Dual Sight • Tal'Darim Altar LE
GSL November map pool Antiga Shipyard • Bel'Shir Beach • Calm Before the Storm • Crossfire SE • Daybreak • Dual Sight • Tal'Darim Altar LE
.
Please research before posting. Thanks.
EDIT: On that note, GOM usually test maps independently of their tournaments. I believe Gisado and the mapmakers are part of that process. The shortest map in GSL map pool history (including GSL special tournaments) is probably Typhon Peaks, which was only in GSTL 2 and out immediately.
MKP, Dongraegu, and Leenock are the favorites to win here. It's good to have a nice, not serious tournament once in while. I'd laugh if the 2nd place finisher gets a special trophy or medal instead of 1st place.

Also would it qualify as a normal "special event" ? After all whoever takes second may not be the King of Kong but will be the Kong of Kongs.
Oh wow, Rainbow. I'm so surprised to see him on there, I watch his stream every now and then (and his girlfriend's stream, she actually does better than he does, I'd like to see her in the GSL) and he's a great guy, I've missed seeing him in tournaments.

Always a way to bring Naniwa into anything related to GOM.
I think its a pretty funny idea IMO......its just a small tourney.....Im gonna enjoy it...... But its bad that there is only one Protoss player, is there really only 1 Protoss kong? They shouldve bended the rules a bit and thrown in at least 1 or 2 more toss players.
I won't lie... when I first saw the title, I thought GOMTV was trolling us! But here we go, the chance for one of those 2nd place finishers to get first! Although I guess it will still count as not a true win since it's a special tournament, lol. Hahahahahaha. Looking forward to it!
This is the best tournament I have ever seen. They need to invite yellow to do something in the tournament like casting or even playing. The legendary kong will preside over them.

Actually I don't think she looks all that great, but she does play well pretty consistently while Rainbow doesn't.
There is no "point of the tournament". It's just a tournament and I'm just saying that the Line-Up could be better. If NOT, then anybody could tell the reason, why there is no MMA, MVP, MC, Nestea etc. and why there is only 1 Protoss...

Although a lot of BW players/ hardcore fans understand... maybe it should be mentioned somewhere that this is a tournament for "king of kong" -i.e. king of 2nd place. So ofc Mvp, nestea, etc won't be invited. It should be hilarious though, especially when mkp comes second

Super cool map pool. Also I love RainBOw so this should be awesome! RainBOw vs Leenock finals!! :D
This should be fun. I won't buy a ticket since I'm still protesting (see spoiler since its not directly relevant to this thread) but I'd be happy to give Gom my viewer count if I happen to be awake.
I'll be rooting for MKP all the way! Regardless of whether or not he's the Once and Future Kong, I just want him to win because I enjoy watching him play. (He is the Once and Future Kong though. The Nearly-Chosen One, so to speak.)
I'm not protesting Gom punishing Naniwa for throwing a game, I just think its unprofessional of them to arbitrarily remove the mlg code S spot without telling mlg, and for changing the "highest placing non code s person gets code s" to "we'll give the top two people spots in a special event" after the fact.
This isn't relevant to the thread so if you disagree please either pm me or post in one of the threads on this topic. However, I feel obligated to put something about it because otherwise my consumer action would be totally ineffective as a way to encourage a corporation to change their business practices.

No, like said a couple times before a true Kong wins special events and this is one. By that rule the winner of this event is the true Kong.

No the winner is the true Kong because the true Kong always wins the special events. The loser will only strengthen his claim on the Kong line but not fully establish it. The only winner in this tournament is the viewers.

feel free to google Yellow/kong to understand
I guess you have missed a match if you can't see the logical connection between all the players :p
So practically everyone who makes the finals is a Kong. Either the "Special Event" winner Kong or the eternal 2nd place Kong. MKP better lose on purpose in the first round to break the curse.

No the winner is the true Kong because the true Kong always wins the special events. The loser will only strengthen his claim on the Kong line but not fully establish it. The only winner in this tournament is the viewers.

Could have some indication of the new maps for the next GSL. Cloud Kingdom to GSL would be a welcomed addition.
Too bad it's only one protoss, and that one ofc has to be Inca... but I guess it would be unfair to always invite Mc into every single event ( maybe some of their others choices declined?) I cant imagine Rainbow and top or july being first choice.
Wait is this free to watch? Meh it wouldnt be will it?

Yes, Rainbow, top, july, and inca were all first choices. Its the 2nd places of (almost) every GSL

A true kong will always get second in starleagues This is a point you know very well of seeing as its been described many many times.
but there is one more thing about being a true kong.
A true kong will always win a special event
Yellow the true kong,is also know as the king of special events/unofficial matches.
This is a special event.
This is such a great idea haha, will be awesome to watch.
OP should be updated with this post by BLinD-RawR so people know what the meaning of the tournament is
Hmm, I wonder if MarineKing gets to the finals/semis of this Kong/AOL tourney if he'll be playing from Take's flat , that'd be funny. Also has GSL matches after HSCIV, so many events in just 1 week for him.

Premier LAN Events: 2nd at DH Winter 2010 2nd at Assembly Summer 2011 2nd ESWC 2011

BUT, he has won multiple offline weekly cups, and small things like ESET Summer (which was an extra tournament IEM Cologne) I love MaNa, but he's a Kong liner in the truest sense of the word

doesn't matter they still exit the line.
also note there seems to be another pattern in the kong line, the one who got 2nd the most even in special events was the one who exited the kong line first(Stork).
I don't remember if he lost all his IEFs before incurit though...
This is pretty neat, I wish they would be a bit more concise about what this mini-tournament actually is but....I guess I'll just be happy with a tournament MKP might actually take =D

Stork had golds at WCG as well as the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational before his OSL gold. Also, not even Fantasy or Jangbi are in the Kong line anymore... who still is other than Kong himself?!
Finally, major lulz at the idea of JulyZerg as part of the Kong line... the first golden mouser has to be the furthest distance possible from eligibility!
My two favourite players are Leenock and DRG, but i feel that crowning a true king of kong is more important here than having my favourites win a special tournament.
It doesn't matter who wins this tournament MarineKing is still the only true Kong in SC2. MMA had his chance in the October GSL but foolishly passed up his chance at joining a legendary and immortal lineage in favor of money, prestige and earthly pleasures. Honestly speaking, Inca, TOP, July, ITR and Losira do not have what it takes to join the Kong line properly, but I am hopeful that Leenock and DRG will not make the same mistake MMA did if they are fortunate enough to have the opportunity.

Can someone please explain the origin of the word Kong in use? How did it come to be that kong means second place, or one who only wins special tournaments.... this needs to be in liquipedia or something.

Ah well, this tournament seems completely catered to marineking... just because you place second once in the GSL doesn't mean you're suddenly in the kong line. The skill gap also jumps around so much...

How can you accuse them of being ignorant? They are expected to know every single thing about starcraft? Maybe something less brash like "clueless" would be more fitting than "ignorant" as if they purposefully don't want to acknowledge that YellOw won special events.

not that hard :/ loses in MAJOR starleagues, wins non major tourneys = 1st place in AoL is king of kong
How are people that never followed broodwar suppose to get these references? Yeah. Only can be viewed online. I assume based on your post you would be in Korea around that time. If you wait 1 extra week, the regular GSL will be starting on the 9th of Jan at probably 1810 KST. That you can watch from the studio 100%
MarineKing got this easy :D. It's online, and he is like 7-2 against Leenock, and he beat DongRaeGu 4-1 at the first AoL. The other players are not as scary as these two so it should be easy.

The irritation is not in the fact that people don't know, it's that people don't know AND feel the need to voice an uneducated opinion about it. Sometimes angrily, no less.
This is a pretty genius idea for a tournament, I'm smiling just thinking of the idea. Glad they have a decent sense of humour, they should post-tournament jokingly give a "King of Kong" trophy to Marineking just for the hell of it. Either way, this is a stacked tournament. Weakest player probably Rainbow, otherwise everyone is amazing quality players.
*Edit* - I don't know why everyone thinks MKP has this in the bag. I actually think he's an underdog to DongRaeGu or Leenock at the moment, not to mention Losira as well. ToP is also a sharp competitor, so I think it will be a fair and balanced event. Don't get surprised if MKP loses in round 1 to any of the aforementioned names.
On December 28 2011 22:40 noddy wrote: Only 2 Terrans and they're not that good so MarineKing should win this
Are you joking? TOP not a good player? Both those terrans are pretty good.
TOP has good macro, but awful micro.
EDIT: That is why he was "good" when it was GomTvT - TvTs are mostly macro orientated, and especially around when mech was coming into fashion but BFHs weren't taking over, macro was far more important.
He has terribad TvP for the opposite reason - PvT revolves a lot around micro rather than macro.
From the perspective of MKP, he has a far better chance against TOP because TOP has shocking micro. And you can't face MKP and have a good chance with bad micro.
this tournament is so unnecessary, MarineKing is the official king of kong of sc2, why need a tournament to decide whos the best of the finalists, when the king of kong should be based on who had the most 2nd places.

This is a special tournament, the kind that YellOw, the very First Kkong always won... hence winning this would secure your title as the King of Kongs!
I'm starting to feel a bit annoyed that I bought the yearly light ticket instead of the premium. The price difference is $30 and I paid $10 for the Blizzard Cup with the light. Now I feel like they're going to keep adding on free tournaments to the premium ticket and I'll end up paying more for less . Oh well should be fun.
Inca guaranteed last place. The guy has no good matchups except PvP. Also its funny to see DRG in the lineup since he won GOM's LG 3D tournament over sC.fOu at the time, back in like june or july

"paying more for less" I mean I didn't need the mobile or Korean VODs so I just got the light. But then the one with Korean VODs get Blizzard Cup and this tournament for free, plus perhaps some more tournaments. So it could end up if I pay for some tournaments that end up getting included in premium that weren't previously mentioned, I pay more and still am without the mobile and Korean VODs. What's confusing about what I wrote?
I am really pleased to see this tournament! I think that it does a great job of bringing some old faces back into the scene for a short, light-hearted tournament, especially for that gap on GOM's calendar between the Up & Down matches and the next GSL season. As a Premium Ticket holder, I am also pleased with the value that GOM has infused into the package, already including the Blizzard Cup and this upcoming tournament. I certainly hope (and suspect that) they will continue to do these tiny filler tournaments with decent prize pools and unique themes! Plus, as an added bonus, this tournament will allow for some good tests of some of the new maps used in upcoming seasons.

Also besides mobile and Korean they get dual streams. I also got light. But I mainly want vod access. My point would be. You are still getting everything you thought you'd get with the package. Sure the options you didn't choose are now diff, but you're not losing something that was originally advertised

I see that the schedules are up. I'm really happy for DRG, as his group has some really questionable players. There's July zerg who can't pull off a 6 pool lately to save his life. And LOLka who has like a 2:15 record versus zerg. Rainbow could be pretty strong, though we haven't seen much of him lately.
Not that I mind, just a fun fact. Really shows how unpolished Blizzard maps usually are, and how great they can become after being tuned with the fine hand of a professional.
