I have a friend who is deaf and he is really taking alot of intrest into starcraft 2 matches. It's a shame because it takes me long to explain what the casters was saying and i think that he is really missing out. I was looking around for subtitled matches but i couldnt find any.
Youtube has some voice recognition thing that hardly works. I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem too.
If anyone has any great solutions i would be grateful
thanks

I'm training to be a court reporter at the moment. I've always thought that when i get a solid 200 words per minute, i would like to start offering Computer Assisted Real-Time Translation to add captions(subtitles) to tournaments. I'm not sure what the demand for this would be.

If anyone thinks it would be nice to have subtitles on tournaments, message me. I'll start working on a dictionary to take real time dictation from pro casters for tournaments immediately if any tournament hosts could offer me a job. Would be fun as hell.

On a plus note, if i do captioning for a tournament, i could turn everything i write into a typed-out transcript that people could read later. Maybe post the transcript of a tournament on TL for people to read if they don't have access to a VOD or are in a place where watching a video isn't convenient.

I think it would be really difficult/requires additional people to subtitle/closed captions live pro matches and there would be some major delay similar to closed captioning on live television. No one has really done it yet because there was never a significant demand to subtitles. Not to offend your friend or others who actually are deaf, but... I guess what I'm trying to say is that the majority of the viewers are not deaf so there's no real demand for subtitles in the casts?

On the Youtube side, casters like Husky usually do the casting/uploading/recording/encoding, basically all the production by themselves, or with maybe 1 other co-caster. The addition of subtitles or putting captions on Youtube would make each video take a longer time to produce, and again, with low demand for it, the casters probably just don't add it in.

One solution I see would be to basically generate the demand for it, and I'm sure casters/production will add it in. It only adds to including a wider audience. But I think atm, the additional production time required may not justify the very few people that would benefit from it.

Captioning a tournament requires one(1) person with a stenograph machine doing real time translation.

It's a shame that deaf people will never be able to hear the enthusiasm that a lot of great casters put into their casts.

On a slightly different note, I think the wall of text that would appear whenever Husky's wpm exceeds a player's apm would literally cover the screen and would be counterproductive to captions :/

I think that'd be a great thing. Imagine how awesome LR threads would be if you could somehow feed the steno right into textform on a forum or something.
But even if qualified real-time subtitlers (wtf is the word) are hard to get, it shouldn't be that hard to add subs to VODs, especially english-english as no translations are needed.

I'd be willing to write out the entire script of each casting if someone wants to do the editing work and such.

The typesetting and timing aren't that hard to do. A lot of people who are fansubbing Anime etc. should know how to do this. If GOM or so would pay a small amount and employ somebody to do it I'm sure there'd be a lot of ppl willing to do it.
Doing it fanbased would be harder, as you need to somehow mux the subtitles with the video so you'd need the source (i.e. downloadable VODs which isn't really the norm AFAIK)

I was thinking the same about the wall of text part. You would either have to be a speed reader or have the captions in a different place other than on screen.

An idea for the real time captions would to have a chat channel (or something like a chat channel) set up online and just type out what the casters are saying so that people can read it without it filling up the screen. Although i do agree that the demand for such a thing would be low, it would be cool for somebody to do it and possibly help integrate another group of people into liking ESports even more.

YouTube has a system in place where you can add a captions track to the video, but only the video's owner can upload it and it takes a lot of time to do so (depending on the caster - an analytical caster like Day[9] will be harder to transcribe than a shoutcaster with a lot of "OHHHHHHH" and "AHHHHHHH"s). Unfortunately, even if there was a dedication to writing captions for SC2 matches on YT, that's only one place and that's not real-time.

For real-time tournaments, we'd need a CARTTer like FAAAwesome mentioned, but that would still require the tournament to hire someone like that to do the job, and I'm not sure they'd be willing to do so (unless the expense for hiring a CARTTer is fairly inexpensive or the estimated reward in terms of increased revenue from the deaf community will outweigh the risk).

I think for now, the best thing we as a community could do is work to create transcripts of things like the Day[9] dailies, SC2 talk shows like SotG, and tournament matches like the GSL, NASL and MLG for the deaf community to use alongside the videos. In fact, if there's enough support I'd be willing to start up a system where people can choose (or be assigned) videos to transcribe, with timecodes, these types of videos. I even have a proposed system in mind:

*Note: If this actually happens, I'll create a much more detailed and clear-cut post about signing up and actually transcribing.
+ Show Spoiler +
Members can sign up to transcribe 1 (or more) match per day, in their choice of GSL, NASL, MLG, other currently active tournaments, and assorted dailies/weeklies (the dailies and weeklies would probably be split into 20-30 minute segments so as not to ask one member to do too much).

The goal is to have a full transcription of each match/daily/weekly up within 2 days of the event taking place. The transcriptions of these matches will then be uploaded to Google Docs or some similar site, where they can be accessed publicly and will be posted and organized to a dedicated thread on TL.

Sign-ups/match distribution will be as follows:
People who sign up for certain tournaments (GSL, MLG, etc.) will be able to claim a specific number game each day (for example, a user claiming the first game for Code S would transcribe the first game of every cast; the user claiming the second game would transcribe the second game of every cast, and so on). If a user does not claim a specific game, they may "freelance" and call a specific game (not one already claimed) to transcribe, by posting on the TL thread to do so.

People who sign up for certain dailies/weeklies (Day[9] daily, SotG, Lo3, etc.) will be able to claim certain timestamps (for example, 0:00-30:00); again, other users will then be able to "freelance" and transcribe timestamp sections not already claimed by another user. Each segment will then be PMed to one person (presumably the OP or someone who volunteers for the task) and compiled into a single document, which will be uploaded to the Google Docs and then posted in the thread.

For all other videos or podcasts, requests can be submitted to the thread for transcriptions.

I believe the best bet for adding easy captioning to a streaming tournament would be a separate stream which is merely a black box(or any color) with the text appearing as it is spoken.

If i were to provide this service, it goes without saying i would need preparation. This would include talking to the casters so i can make briefs and phrases for their favorite things to yell(example: i could make "SOOOOO MANY BANELINGS!" into one stroke, maybe SO/BL). Also, i would have to tell casters that speaking as fast as their annoying ex-girlfriend might lead to a bad translation After some preparation, captioning games would be something reasonable to do.

P.S. Am i the only one who gets annoyed by rapid fire casting? Look at the announcers for other sports. They give concise descriptions of the action plus some good feedback and make good note of particular parts of the action. Only in Esports is there such a plague as machine-gun-casting. It sounds like matches are being announced by the cast of "The View".

This is a great idea. Anything that can bring SC2 to more people is a great idea. I'd like to see this be successful.

Hmm, it would idd be awesome if we had this. Even tough the deaf people are a minority it's still something that could and should be done imo. Just that someone who can write fast needs to contact gomtv and talk to them about it.

Like I mentioned in my post, I'd be more than willing to organize and participate in a community effort to transcribe things like tournaments and dailies in a quick and efficient way.

I worked for a (deaf) phone relay service before so I'm always kind of aware of these issues... I've been thinking that it would be really cool to have some sort of [cc] (like replays where they edited caster chat back into the game). From the few times I've watched sporting events with [cc] enabled and unfortunately they always lag behind. VOD's however would be a great solution IMO.

BTW, if anyone has a game that they would like a transcript for, post a link to a video. It shouldn't take me too long to stamp out an accurate transcript if its wanted. No charge of course

The difference between SC2 and other sports is the amount of things going on at any given second. Consider that an SC2 pro has an APM (probably) over 200 (no I don't keep up with average APM of pro players); that's 3 actions per second by both players. In baseball, there's a pitch thrown every 20 seconds or so; in football, there's 20-30 seconds in between each play. The amount of action in SC2 vs. any other sport is staggering when you think about it.

Thanks for the great advise guys, i really do hope this takes off. Watching the game itself is definatly not as good as amazing casters commenting while watching.

I like the idea of a separate stream with just text on black for live events. I guess the biggest thing is how many people would use it or want access to it?

As for the daily captioning, that would be my favorite.
