The wings simply bend forward to create the more arched look of the new units "wings". The cockpit area of the phoenix slides back when it changes into the new unit. The area circled in red on the phoenix changes into either of the sets of red circles on the new unit. The area boxed in orange on the phoenix folds down into the area circled in orange on the new unit. This is possibly where the weapon is housed.
