Does anyone else get cold hands while gaming? I mean, it might just be that where I live (chicago) its that time of the year that everything starts getting cold, but it always seems that even when my body is completely warm, my hands are freezing; this is also very unlike me, as I could provide personal testimony from my girlfriend that I am a human space-heater.

Anybody know anything to fix this, or help? I just played a game with an average of 70 APM by SC2's new apm measurement and while that's not NaDa-like speed, my hands were moving pretty consistently, and now that the game is done they're still freezing.

Wear a sweater and feel free to ask for pauses where you can just stop for 20 seconds and warm up. My hands don't get cold, but if I get frustrated, they fall asleep to an almost painful extent. It helps to just stop and chill.

I think this is quite common. You don't wanna be packing on jumpers or god forbid gloves while playing obviously. The best fix i know is to get some reusable hand warmers and heat up between games

A lot of Starcraft players tend to have this problem, HuK is even cited bringing hand warmers inside the booths when he plays in tournaments. Not entirely sure why, but I think it's good for you to know you're not completely abnormal.

If you dont get cold hands naturally, I always thought it was the bodies response to the adrenaline and nervousness that come from playing the game. You could help alleviate this by actively trying to improve your circulation (Keeping a few weights near your gaming station, do a few pushups between matches and overall try to keep the blood flowing) and you can also passively increase circulation by taking more b-vitamins, whole grains etc. Good circulation is very important in trying to prevent RSI's so if your hands are getting cold and you're trying to play quickly you're going to be at higher risk of developing CTS or CuTS. The body tries to move all your blood to your organs and the only way really to do anything about it is to do something active.

edit: also try jumping jacks ^^;

I think everyone's hands get cold playing SC2. It may the be the adrenaline I think. Day9 talked about it on one of his dailies, im sure someone else here can explain it much better.

In between games, rest your hands by hanging your arms down my your sides. Usually your hands are elevated on the desk when playing which can contribute to lower circulation of blood. Rubbing, stretching and massaging them will help with circulation as well. If it's super cold where hand warmers and keep a hot cup of tea/coffee close by and drink using both hands .

I get the same issue! Thought I was the only one actually. My hands get so cold I feel weird and off when I attempt to play. I also have genetically poor track record in the circulation department so... =/. I actually try to wear warmer clothes or even sit on my hands and generally just move them around. Get them limber and toasty. If I attempt to play my cold hands, the joints begin to hurt.

Weird...my girlfriend says the same thing about me...long lost brother!?

I would try some hand warming exercises, an instrument, other games, maybe even typing some mock paragraphs. I actually like to play multiple customs vs computers or actually just sit on my hands before I try to play so my joints don't hurt as I struggle to macro effectively. Maybe try lifting something, get your blood flowing.

Yea I get this....The annoying thing is it will happen in a room that is otherwise at a comfortable temperature, so i dont want to do something that would heat the entire room. I have tried both wearing gloves and running hot water over my hands between games. Ive seen programmers with what I assume are hot-packs doing the same thing. All of these work to some extent, but when the game winds on my hands will get progressively colder. I have yet to find a great solution. Maybe some sort of localized heat source blowing warm air directly over the laptop.

Rubbing and stretching the wrists is good, but if you have a pre existing wrist problem (early stage carpal tunnel etc) you can cause more inflammation and make things worse.

Play through the cold. In a few weeks your hands will turn into moving icicles and you will be UNSTOPPABLE!!! BWhahahahahahahahahaha

Or its circulation...it could be either really. I vote unstoppable icicle hands myself...

During the warm months of the year this isn't a problem to me but during fall/winter it can be a pain warming up the hands after being outside.

my gf knitted me a pair of finger less gloves. She did a really really tight knit and double layered it. I put a couple neo magnets from a hardware store for the thumb mitten and the finger mitten. I think I saw that in a pair of gloves somewhere and I wanted to remake it myself. I have some bad heart genetics so I don't get a lot of blood to my fingers when I'm stressed.

So yeah. a pair of finger-less gloves is the answer. Get a tight pair to your fingers so you'll prevent muscle fatigue and twitching together (NASCAR does the same thing for the drivers to pressure the hands to keep them from getting tired.

Edit: this would be better in the general section. Some of the bw people would probably know more then me about this.

Your crotch is your natural hand warmer, use it. Its not like anyone will see you even if you are streaming unless you do a weird full body stream.

Arm pits are good too but not as super effective.

Using hand warmers or rubbing your hands together/blowing in them helps. Also try drinking hot tea/coffee/chocolate to keep your hands warm from just holding the cup.
